Amy wants to become a hedgehog (刺猬) expert after listening to a talk about wildlife. She borrows a book from the library and learns a lot about hedgehogs. She also finds an old tape (录音带) called Wild Calls and practises making hedgehog sounds herself.
Every night, Amy goes into her garden and makes hedgehog noises, hoping to attract real hedgehogs. However, nothing happens for a week. One evening, while she is practising, a hedgehog appears and answers her calls! Amy is so happy that she starts chatting with it.
Mr Peck, Amy’s neighbour, hears the noise. He dislikes hedgehogs because he believes they eat all the vegetables in his garden. He is shocked to see Amy talking to one but soon sees an opportunity to make money by showing Amy and the hedgehogs to visitors.
However, Amy soon discovers his plan. When people come to watch, she tells them, “Ladies and gentlemen, all the money you give tonight will go to a hedgehog hospital to care for sick hedgehogs.” She also mentions that Mr Peck has agreed to donate his own money. Mr Peck’s face turns bright red, and he has no choice but to agree.

Can a robot help slow climate change? For college students Marta Bernardino and Sebastião Mendonça, the answer is yes. The two students created Trovador, a robot that can plant trees in hard-to-reach areas.
Bernardino and Mendonça have a special connection to forests. They grew up playing in the woods near their homes in Portugal, a nation in Europe. But since 1980, wildfires have destroyed large areas of Portugal’s forests. Seeing this, the two wanted to do something. Experts say the main reason for wildfires is climate change. It has caused hotter and drier weather, and as a result, more wildfires happen. So it’s important to bring back forests because trees can help reduce the effects of climate change. However, it is a task that needs long-term work and proper technology to achieve.
That’s exactly what the two did. When Bernardino and Mendonça were in high school, they built the first version (版本) of Trovador. Over time, they kept creating new versions, and each one was better than the last. Trovador now looks like a spider (蜘蛛), and it has six “legs”.
Using the six “legs”, the lightweight robot can easily move up and down Portugal’s steep slopes (陡坡). For humans, these places are difficult to climb. The first version of Trovador could plant trees 28% faster than a human, while the newest one can plant up to 200 young trees each hour. “Trovador can carry young trees on its back and plant them across difficult ground without help,” the two shared.
Bernardino and Mendonça plan to keep improving Trovador. They hope to make the robot cheaper and easier to use, so that people anywhere can use Trovador to plant trees.
27. What encouraged the two students to create Trovador?
A. Their interest in machines.
B. Their wish is to save the forests.
C. Their curiosity about insects.
28. What can we learn about Trovador from paragraph 3?
A. It looks like an insect without legs.
B. It has improved several times over the years.
C. Its first version took many years to finish.
29. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How the robot plants trees.
B. How the robot climbs slopes.
C. The strong abilities of the robot.
30. What can we infer (推断) from the two students’ plan?
A. They will stop developing Trovador.
B. They will only keep Trovador in Portugal.
C. They hope Trovador can come into common use.
【答案】27. B 28. B 29. C 30. C
【解析】

16-year-old Vick Tan is a fishing lover. He says fishing helps him reduce screen time. His younger brother, William, also enjoys fishing because it’s a good way to relax.
These benefits inspired the brothers to start Fish Hut. Its purpose is to help improve young people’s mental health (心理健康) through fishing. Fish Hut has served thousands of young people since 2023.
Giving away boxes of fishing gear (用具) is one way the brothers get kids outdoors. Each box, called a “fish hut”, has everything a kid needs to go fishing. These things are mostly from kind people. “We put the boxes in some public places, such as community centres and parks,” Vick says.
Besides giving away fishing gear, the group also organizes free fishing festivals. A popular one is the ice fishing event on Lake Minnetonka every winter. To prepare for it, Vick, William, and a team of helpers drill holes (钻孔) in the lake’s frozen (结冰的) surface. “It’s truly a lot of work. But just seeing the result is well worth it,” William says. This year’s ice fishing festival was on February 22. Volunteers taught newcomers how to catch fish. It was cold outside, but everyone had a good time.
At every Fish Hut event, Vick says, “We try to create an experience that they’ll never forget.”
