How High-Rises Shaped Modern Britain
Eyesores and dangerously unsafe? Or ideal housing for the working classes? Holly Smith tells the stories behind some of the UK’s most revolutionary homes—buildings that have deeply shaped modern Britain, mixing novelty, success and painful debate.
Kensal House (1936, west London)
Co-designed by Maxwell Fry and Elizabeth Denby, it was intended for working-class families between the two World Wars, when modernist homes for the rich were already popular. It offered bright, spacious flats with private balconies, labour-saving kitchens and public gardens. Managed by residents with strict rules, it was a pioneering model that inspired thousands of estates later—completely distinct from the dark, crowded and poor areas people had to live in before.
Ronan Point (1968, east London)
This poorly built tower collapsed just two months after opening: a small gas leak on the 18th floor destroyed a whole wing, killing 5 people and injuring 17. Its concrete panels were piled up without a strong internal frame, and its joints were even filled with old cement(水泥)bags and wrinkled newspapers. The public shock exposed widespread structural faults in high-rises, though hundreds of such blocks still lack proper strengthening today.
Trellick Tower (1972, west London)
In sharp contrast, this high-rise is a masterpiece by Hungarian architect Ernó Goldfinger. It used top materials like marble lobbies and stained(染色的)glass, as the designer believed high-rises could “free the ground for gardens” and set high standards for public housing—turning homes from just simple shelters into spaces where people could express their lives fully.
Cascades (1988, east London)
This flashy postmodern tower dominates the Thames, mixing ocean liner elegance and old storehouse solidity while taking inspiration from local marine history. Nicknamed “Yuppie Towers,” it was the first private luxury high-rise here, with a pool and a gym. It created a clear contradiction: social housing high-rises are seen as signs of poverty, while new luxury ones stand for success.
21. What can we learn about Ronan Point from the text?
A. Its structural faults led to an accident. B. Its construction featured sustainable materials.
C. Its design targeted luxury housing. D. Its failure helped address similar faults.
22. What do Kensal House and Trellick Tower have in common?
A. They were under strict management. B. They provided private gardens.
C. They were built with top materials. D. They served as ideal examples.
23. How does Cascades reflect the evolution of British high-rises?
A. Postmodern designs replaced modernist ones.
B. Luxury facilities became standard for high-rises.
C. They shifted from public housing to private luxury.
D. Postmodernism became the mainstream design style.

(原创)I ran my first half marathon at twenty-seven. My pace was over twelve minutes per mile, and I was among the last to finish, but I didn’t care. I had completed 13.1 miles! Thirty years later, I ran the same race again. My finishing time was 1:38. My pace? 12:06 per mile. I hadn't gotten any faster — but I hadn’t gotten any slower either.
I often joke that if I keep this up, I might qualify for the Boston Marathon when I’m eighty. Slow, steady, and stubborn — that’s me. Here’s the thing: life, like marathons, is not always about speeding up or winning. It’s about showing up, staying present, and enjoying the ride, even if you’re at the back of the pack chatting with other slow runners and taking in the scenery.
Our culture celebrates improvement. We constantly want more — faster, richer, smarter. And I do appreciate excellence in many areas of my life. But I also believe it’s perfectly fine to love something you’re not particularly good at. I enjoy running and dancing, though I’m brilliant at neither. As long as I can keep them up and stay injury-free, I count that as a win. Sadly, I’ve met people who gave up what they truly loved because they failed to achieve excellence. One client left a job he adored simply because it seemed “below” his educational level. Now he holds a fancy title but finds his new work dull and unrewarding.
So here’s my reminder: you don’t have to get better for something you love to matter. You just have to keep going, keep showing up, and keep enjoying the journey. Because joy — whether it comes slowly or quickly — is what truly counts. And sometimes, the back of the pack is exactly where you want to be, because there’s time to take in the moment back there.
24. What does the author intend to show with his running experience?
A. Speed matters less than persistence in life.
B. Older runners are slower than younger ones.
C. Marathon training requires years of practice.
D. Finishing a race brings more joy than winning.
25. What is the author’s attitude towards improvement in our culture?
A. He rejects it completely as harmful. B. He accepts it but questions its priority.
C. He considers it the key to happiness. D. He believes it mostly applies to work.
26. Why is the client mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To prove that success requires sacrifice.
B. To show the cost of chasing excellence.
C. To explain how to choose a satisfying job.
D. To suggest education guarantees happiness.
27. Where is this text most probably taken from?
A. A textbook on career development. B. A scientific report on sports science.
C. A news article about marathon events. D. A personal blog about life philosophy.

(原创)Have you ever found yourself worrying excessively when a friend fails to reply promptly or sends a rather brief message? Instantly, the thought crosses your mind: “Have I done something wrong?” Although reason tells you that they are probably just occupied, the uneasy feeling lingers. This kind of oversensitivity is surprisingly widespread and has a psychological explanation.
Psychologists refer to this as the “fawn response” – a lesser-known defence mechanism. It refers to the tendency to calm a perceived threat by seeking reassurance, offering compliments, or acting in an overly helpful manner, all in an effort to restore a sense of safety. According to psychotherapist Meg Josephson, this pattern often originates in childhood, particularly in response to critical, neglectful, or unpredictable parents. Children learn to please others in order to avoid conflict. Women are especially likely to develop this tendency, as social norms often encourage them to put others at ease.
However, while this coping strategy may temporarily reduce anxiety, it carries significant drawbacks. It fuels constant mind-reading and anxious overthinking, draining emotional energy. More importantly, it does not actually prevent disagreements; it merely masks them. By constantly smoothing things over, individuals avoid honest communication and never learn that conflict is not necessarily destructive. On the surface, the relationship may seem calm, but it often becomes fragile and lacks genuine depth.
So how can we break this cycle? The first step is to recognise that conflict does not spell the end of a friendship. In healthy relationships, a certain amount of friction is not only normal but also beneficial, as it shows that both parties can hold different views. Even more valuable is the fact that repairing a disagreement can strengthen closeness, proving that differing opinions need not harm intimacy. Next time you catch yourself overthinking, remind yourself: instead of seeking to please, try honest dialogue. True friendships are resilient enough to withstand differences – and they often grow deeper through the process of repair.
28. What does the author do in the first paragraph?
A. Describing a recent personal incident. B. Offering a solution to social anxiety.
C. Presenting a shared emotional puzzle. D. Questioning the value of friendships.
29. How does the author explain the fawn response?
A. It is a method for gaining the upper hand.
B. It is a natural outcome of adult social life.
C. It is an uncommon reaction to perceived danger.
D. It is a habit formed during school years.
30. What negative effect of the fawn response is stressed?
A. Making conflicts more destructive. B. Increasing physical tiredness greatly.
C. Encouraging frequent honest talks. D. Hiding the real nature of relations.
31. What recommendation does the author offer?
A. End friendships that involve conflict. B. Value the healing role of repair.
C. Keep opposing views to yourself. D. Avoid the friction in friendships.

(原创)While neurotic robots are a staple of science fiction, they haven’t really been a focus of research into how people react to robots’ personalities. But one recent study found that a highly neurotic robot may uniquely connect with human.
In the experiment visitors in a Chicago museum were randomly invited to go into a room and interact with a human-shaped robot greeter. The bot and the person had to sit together and talk about what they were grateful for. When programmed with high extroversion, the robot enthusiastically praised meeting “amazing people” and having “the best job”. However, the neurotic version used hesitant speech (e.g., “um”) and express gratitude for having a job where it could keep things organized in order to stay focused and avoid “unexpected issues.” Participants rated the extroverted robot the more enjoyable but the neurotic robot was perceived as more human-like and emotionally insightful. One participant commented, “I think we both seem to make an effort to think about ourselves and do lots of inner contemplation.”
Research on robot personalities has long focused on extroversion — being sociable and confident. Traits like anxiety and self-doubt, known as neuroticism, were considered unsuitable for roles requiring reliability, such as self-driving cars. Experts assumed that few people would feel at ease with a nervous vehicle. However, this preference for confident machines may have overlooked something. Robots that constantly agree or remain overly polite can become annoying, suggesting that a touch of imperfection might make interactions feel more natural.
A research team therefore explored neurotic robots and found that participants actually enjoyed such behaviours, describing them as amusing and engaging. Yet a practical concern remains. While an anxious robot may be entertaining, it is unclear when this trait would be genuinely helpful. A self-driving car, for example, would hardly benefit from nervousness. Further studies are needed to determine its real value in different settings.
32. What did the experiment reveal about the neurotic robot?
A. It was less enjoyable but more efficient in its work.
B. It made visitors feel uncomfortable and anxious.
C. It was viewed as more thoughtful than the extroverted one.
D. It performed better in organizing daily tasks.
33. What does the underlined word “contemplation” imply in paragraph 2?
A. Physical exercise. B. Social interaction.
C. Technical training. D. Deep self-reflection.
34. What does the author think of the new study on neurotic robots?
A. It challenges a long-standing assumption. B. It ignores the role of human emotions.
C. It confirms the value of confident robots. D. It proves robots should be highly polite.
35. What conclusion does the author draw about neurotic robots?
A. They are more suitable for entertainment than serious roles.
B. Their practical value remains to be confirmed.
C. They should replace extroverted robots in all tasks.
D. Their design requires more advanced technology.
Humblebragging refers to the act of combining complaints with self-praise. It happens when people boast about their achievements while appearing modest or even troubled. For example, someone might post online: "Why do I always take on too many things?" or "It's so hard — I give at least eight radio interviews a week." Though humblebragging is common on social media, it rarely produces the positive reactions that the poster expects. 36
People want to share their successes, yet they fear being seen as arrogant. This inner conflict, known as cognitive dissonance, arises when our actions go against social norms. In many cultures, humility is highly valued, so direct self-promotion can feel uncomfortable. 37 By complaining while subtly bragging, individuals ease this tension.
Unfortunately, humblebragging often backfires. Instead of admiration, it tends to invite annoyance. Research has found that those who humblebrag are viewed as less sincere, less likable, and even more narcissistic than those who simply complain or boast openly. 38 When people feel they are being misled, trust breaks down, and the damage to relationships can be lasting.
So what should people do instead? 39 If you have done something worth sharing, simply state it clearly. Honesty, even if not always warmly received, is at least respected. In addition, sharing the difficulties you faced along the way can make your story more relatable. 40 By being open about both achievements and struggles, you invite genuine appreciation — and that is far more valuable than any hollow praise gained through humblebragging.
A. The key is to be honest about your achievements.
B. This suggests that being real is more attractive than disguise.
C. The real problem lies in the inner conflict people experience.
D. This explains why humblebragging has become so widespread.
E. Acknowledging others’ contributions also shows your true character.
F. Humblebragging is especially common among younger social media users.
G. For example, some people pretend to be modest to gain support from others.

It had been one of those days where nothing seemed to go right. After wrestling with a flat tire and ruining my favorite shirt with coffee, I finally dragged myself into a crowded grocery store, desperate to get home. Forced to park in a distant lot, I rushed through the aisles, grabbing only a few essentials. When I reached the checkout, however, my spirits sank further. The lines were impossibly long, and the cashiers moved with a leisurely pace that suggested they had no sense of the world’s urgency.
Just as I was about to abandon my cart and walk out in defeat, a gentle voice came from behind. “Young lady, you look like you’re in a terrible hurry. Please, go ahead of me.” I turned to find an elderly gentleman, his cart modestly filled with what appeared to be a week’s worth of simple meals. I thanked him, but hesitated, noticing his slightly unsteady hands. “I insist,” he said with a warm smile, already stepping aside to make room for me.
Grateful, I placed my few items—milk, bread, and a single lottery ticket—on the conveyer belt(传送带). The cashier, however, seemed to be having an off day. He first struggled to open the ticket box, then keyed in the wrong code, forcing a cancellation and restart. The process dragged on, and I could feel the gentleman’s patience being tested. Yet, when I glanced back apologetically, he simply offered an encouraging nod, his eyes kind.
As I fumbled with my wallet to pay, I knocked over a small display of mints. Embarrassed, I bent down to pick them up, feeling the day’s frustration boil over.

Hearing that the Student Union is calling for proposals for the Life Skills Workshop, I strongly recommend basic cooking as a core course.
Once living independently, many students rely heavily on unhealthy takeout, which drains both health and budget. Mastering simple cooking changes that entirely. First and foremost, it is not merely about feeding oneself — it is an act of independence. Furthermore, preparing nutritious meals gives students control over daily life, fosters self-discipline, and teaches essential planning skills. In addition, cooking serves as a creative outlet and a meaningful way to care for others.
In short, cooking empowers students to take charge of their lives, deserving priority in the workshop.
Hearing that the Student Union is collecting proposals for the Life Skills Workshop, I propose first aid as the essential skill to be taught.
Emergencies strike without warning — a classmate chokes or a family member collapses. In those critical moments, survival often depends on whether someone nearby knows how to respond. First of all, first aid transforms us from helpless bystanders into capable first responders. Moreover, it equips students to assess situations calmly and provide vital care before professionals arrive. More importantly, beyond practical techniques, it builds confidence and a deep sense of responsibility.
Given its power to save lives and shape character, first aid truly deserves a central place in the workshop.

Paragraph 1:
When I finally paid, I turned to the elderly man. Noticing a heavy bag of rice in his cart, which must have been quite a burden for his trembling hands, I insisted on carrying it to his car. He waved his hands in refusal, but I had already lifted it. “You gave me your place; let me give you a hand,” I smiled. Walking beside him, I fished the lottery ticket out of my pocket and handed it to him. “Consider this your reward for your patience.” He hesitated, then accepted it with a warm chuckle.
Paragraph 2:
“I hope it brings you luck,” I said with a smile as I walked away. Settling into my driver's seat, I watched him in the mirror. He scratched the ticket, and his face lit up with surprise. He rushed to my window, showing me a small winning amount, and tried to split it with me. Laughing, I pointed to the sky. “Keep it. That's just the boomerang coming back to you—but the real return was your kindness earlier.” As I drove off, the setting sun felt warmer, and I knew I'd stop complaining about a bad day, for a stranger's goodness had turned it into a memorable one.

Something else I’d like to mention is the new fitness area which is right next to the west of the Lily pond.
A篇
根据Ronan Point部分,“This poorly built tower collapsed just two months after opening...The public shock exposed widespread structural faults in high-rises”可知其结构缺陷导致了事故(倒塌)。B项说使用可持续材料,文中未提及;C项说面向豪华住房,实际是廉价公寓;D项说帮助解决了类似问题,文中说“hundreds of such blocks still lack proper strengthening today”,说明并未解决。
Kensal House是“a pioneering model that inspired thousands of estates”,Trellick Tower是“a masterpiece”,两者都被视为典范。
最后一段明确指出“It created a clear contradiction: social housing high-rises are seen as signs of poverty, while new luxury ones stand for success.”
作者用自己速度没有提升但坚持跑步30年的经历,说明“life, like marathons, is not always about speeding up or winning. It's about showing up, staying present, and enjoying the ride”,即坚持比速度更重要。
B项“Older runners are slower”与作者本人“hadn't gotten any slower”不符,且非主旨;C项“requires years of practice”偏离主题;D项“Finishing a race brings more joy than winning”文中未比较,作者强调的是过程而非结果。
作者说“I do appreciate excellence in many areas of my life. But I also believe it's perfectly fine to love something you're not particularly good at.”——他认可追求卓越,但质疑它是否应成为生活的首要优先级。A项“rejects it completely”与“appreciate”矛盾;C项“key to happiness”无依据;D项“mostly applies to work”过度缩小范围,文中泛指生活。
A项“Describing a recent personal incident”文中用泛指而非个人经历;B项“Offering a solution”是后文内容;D项“Questioning the value of friendships”文中并未质疑友谊价值。
第二段说“fawn response”是一种“lesser-known defence mechanism”,是“the tendency to calm a perceived threat by seeking reassurance”,即对感知到的威胁做出的反应。 A项“gaining the upper hand”相反,是讨好而非控制;B项“natural outcome of adult social life”文中说源于童年;D项“formed during school years”未提。
第三段指出“it does not actually prevent disagreements; it merely masks them”以及“the relationship may seem calm, but it often becomes fragile and lacks genuine depth”,说明这种反应掩盖了关系的真实状态。
最后一段建议“recognise that conflict does not spell the end of a friendship”以及“repairing a disagreement can strengthen closeness”,即重视修复在关系中的作用。
第二段说“participants rated the extroverted robot the more enjoyable but the neurotic robot was perceived as more human-like and emotionally insightful”,即神经质机器人被认为更有思想深度和情感洞察力。A项“less enjoyable but more efficient”文中未提效率;B项“made visitors feel uncomfortable”参与者评价为“amusing and engaging”,并非不适;D项“performed better in organizing tasks”仅是机器人表达感激时提到的内容,并非实际表现更好。
前文提到参与者评论“we both seem to make an effort to think about ourselves”,contemplation意为“深思、反省”,与deep self-reflection对应。
第三段说“this preference for confident machines may have overlooked something”以及“Robots that constantly agree or remain overly polite can become annoying”,说明这项研究挑战了长期以来的假设——机器人应该是自信和令人舒适的。
最后一段说“a practical concern remains...it is unclear when this trait would be genuinely helpful”以及“Further studies are needed to determine its real value”,说明其实际价值尚待确认。
D项“This explains why humblebragging has become so widespread”起到承上启下的作用。
37. C 前文提到“inner conflict”和“cognitive dissonance”,C项“The real problem lies in the inner conflict people experience”直接承接上文,指出现象背后的本质问题。
38. B 前文说humblebrag被认为“less sincere, less likable, and even more narcissistic”,B项“This suggests that being real is more attractive than disguise”是对研究结果的总结推论。
39. A 前文问“what should people do instead?”,A项“The key is to be honest about your achievements”直接给出建议,且与后文“simply state it clearly”呼应。
40. E 前文说“sharing the difficulties you faced along the way can make your story more relatable”,后文“By being open about both achievements and struggles”中的both提示前文应提到成就的分享方式。E项“Acknowledging others' contributions also shows your true character”进一步补充了真诚分享的方式,且与后文呼应。
smiles与前文baristas(咖啡师)的服务场景最匹配。
However“然而”。
smooth“顺畅的”;boring“无聊的”;dangerous“危险的”。
push into“挤入、强行插入”。
47. A “end on a positive note”
Reflecting on“反思、回顾”。A“Making up for”(弥补)不搭;B“Looking forward to”(期待)与回顾一天不符;C“Getting rid of”(摆脱)
59. has been passed 主语craft与pass之间为被动关系,且时间状语for centuries提示用现在完成时,故用has been passed。
61. a 固定搭配in a good condition“处于良好状态”。
65. to continue be expected to do sth.“被期望做某事”,填不定式to continue。
