Dear Jane,
I’m sorry to know that your brother made your best artwork not so perfect and you argued with him. I know exactly how you feel!
Last week, I was trying to create a perfect birthday book for my dad about our family’s grocery store. Just then, my friend Mareya showed up and asked me to go to the park. But when we arrived there, rain started pouring down. We came back home, dripping wet. And that’s when my heart pretty much stopped. Right there, in front of the recycling bin (回收箱), was a box full of soaking-wet papers. My drawings!
“Why did my drawings get out here?” I cried.
“Umm,” my brother Indi said, “Mom asked me to recycle all the papers on the floor, so I did.”
“What?! You destroyed my gift for Dad!”
“Gift for dad? Unless ….” said Mareya, “Remember those papier-mâché (纸浆) pumpkins we made before? We can cover balloons with these wet papers to make as much ‘fruit’ as we can.”
“Do you think this could work?” I asked.
“Um… Let’s try first.”
My birthday book was about the grocery store, so we decided to use balloons and the papers to make “apples”, “peaches” and “oranges”. When we finished, I cheered, “Wow! Still the best gift!”
There’s a pretty happy ending to this sad story. My dad loves his new gift so much that he keeps it right in his store.
So, dear Jane, Mareya’s “every cloud has a silver lining” way of looking at things did help. Next time you might want to keep your special things in an extra-safe place. Now I believe you know how to deal with your colored painting. How about turning it into a collage (拼图)? You can make it!

Gifts are an important part of developing strong relationships with people. But in different cultures, certain gifts may be considered unlucky or rude, and even the timing of giving a gift matters.
There are some improper gifts you should pay attention to. Gifts showing the number four or a gift of four items are unlucky in Japanese, Korean and Chinese cultures. Also, knives and scissors are not good gifts in Latin America and Asia, because these mean cutting a relationship and you are no longer friends. And certain flowers may also send wrong messages to others as they have special meanings in some cultures. For example, in countries like France, chrysanthemums (菊花) are only given when someone dies. What’s more, handkerchiefs(手帕)are fine in some places, such as Japan, but they may be a symbol of sadness or death in other countries like Italy.
So what is a proper and thoughtful gift? Anything from your home country that is difficult to get elsewhere would be good, such as a nice piece of Chinese paper-cutting. Once you have got to know someone, try to give them a present to go with their personal interests as well. If your friend enjoys football, why not get him a shirt of his favourite team?
▲ Westerners usually give gifts when meeting each other, but in Eastern cultures it is more usual to give gifts when you leave. There may also be special holiday times when people expect to receive gifts.
Gift-giving customs are different from country to country, so it is difficult to be correct in every situation. But if you learn the common rules and do some research on the customs of the places you will visit, you will not go too far wrong.
23. How does the writer tell readers about improper gifts?
A. By giving examples. B. By stating opinions. C. By listing numbers. D. By telling stories.
24. Which of the following may be a good gift if you are to give one?
A. Four knives for a Korean classmate. B. Handkerchiefs for an Italian teacher.
C. Chinese calligraphy for an American friend. D. Chrysanthemums for a French neighbor.
25. Which sentence can be put into “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 4?
A. It’s necessary to give gifts on important holidays.
B. When to give gifts also depends on your culture.
C. When to give gifts is based on personal interests.
D. It’s common to give gifts when you visit others.
26. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To make some rules for giving gifts.
B. To remind us of cross-cultural gift customs.
C. To show how to keep good relations.
D. To compare Eastern and Western gift habits.

In this age of big storms, smart designers around the world are taking the opportunity to rethink what they rebuild.
Just before dawn on February 6, 2023, a 29-year-old baker named Nuri Imren woke to the sound of his sister screaming. In the Turkish city of Antakya, his family’s apartment was shaking from side to side. A minute later, he took his whole family down to the street. Many tall buildings fell around them.
A serious earthquake almost destroyed the whole city. Although the city was in a known earthquake zone, poor engineering and low building quality made many buildings easy to break down. Few people could run out of the weak buildings and thousands died, including Imren’s girlfriend and his uncle. The disaster was so serious that people started to think about how to make homes safe.
With great effort, people worked out a creative plan to rebuild the city. Buildings will be lower-no more than three stories (楼层) high in the old city center and five to six stories in the modern one. Heavy concrete slabs (混凝土板) under the buildings will help keep them safe, if the ground turns soft and wet because of an earthquake. Also, there will be more green space near the rivers, along with roads for walking and biking. Sidewalks (人行道) will be widened to help neighbors meet. All in all, the new Antakya will be nicer to live in and more resilient if earthquakes happen.
Antakya isn’t alone. Around the world, more designers think natural disasters can give them ideas about what a better city might look like. And there is great need: climate change is making storms and other disasters worse, while millions more people are moving into cities. Rebuilding plans like this are about creating a safer, fairer, and greener place for people to live their best lives together.
27. What did people in Antakya learn from the earthquake in 2023?
A. Don’t go into weak buildings.
B. Stay with family to keep safe.
C. Change ways to build homes.
D. Don’t be afraid to face disasters.
28. What does the Antakya rebuilding plan include?
A. Taller buildings in the old city center.
B. More concrete slabs for its buildings.
C. Adding green space in the modern city center.
D. Building more sidewalks next to the rivers.
29. What does the underlined “more resilient” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Quieter and quickly rebuilt. B. Stronger and not easily destroyed.
C. More popular and well survived. D. More active and not badly broken.
30. What may be the best title for the text?
A. A Second Chance for Cities B. The Painful History of Antakya
C. How to Survive in Earthquakes D. Where to Rebuild Old Cities

In this story, three friends, Dink, Josh, and Ruth, went to a concert. But at the break time, Dink hurt his arm. At the same time, someone took the famous singer’s pendant (吊坠) away. Later they found Dink’s X-ray had a strange X on it. 31 And he hid the pendant in Dink’s bandage (绷带). He didn’t want people to see the pendant on the X-ray, so he marked an X on it. Dink thought back to yesterday morning. “... no! Wait a minute! While the doctor was putting the bandage on my arm, he made me read a sign on the tent wall!”
Dink looked at his two friends. “He said he wanted me to read to make sure I didn’t get a brain injury,” Dink went on. “But I think that doctor took away the pendant! He hid it inside the bandage and made me read, so I wouldn’t see him do it!”
“ 33 ” Josh asked.
“I know,” Ruth said. “He knew the policemen might be looking for him, so he hid the pendant inside it, and made you take that out of the park for him.”
Dink nodded, feeling his heart racing. “Then, when he got me to the X-ray office, he took off the bandage and took the pendant out.”
“ 34 ” Josh said. “It was your doctor!”
A. But why would he put it inside your bandage?
B. So it wasn’t the hot-dog guy, or big Hans.
C. When did he put a big red X on your X-ray?
D. I also learned that teamwork helps solve problems.
E. They discovered that person pretended to be a doctor.

In late 2025, a girl named Sherry started posting funny videos online. They were about Chinese daily habits with the topic of “Becoming Chinese”. 57 (惊讶), her videos got millions of views and become very popular.
Drinking hot water, wearing slippers, and starting the day with warm porridge — these may sound 58 (基本) to Chinese people. But for many people around the world, they are fun and useful ideas to learn.
In the US, many people still know little or 59 (没有东西) about Chinese culture. By showing easy daily habits, she created a simple way for people to learn. “I hope that even after the excitement goes away, people will keep an open mind,” she said in one of the 60 (采访).

Life is like a roller coaster (过山车), full of ups and downs. Sometimes life throws unexpected 66 (challenge) on our way, but these downs can make the ups even sweeter. I 67 (want) to learn to skateboard since I was a kid — a dream that never left me, not even during the hardest times.
Two years ago, I accidentally fell down a 12-meter waterfall and broke my leg. I went from using a wheelchair 68 using walking stick, then to trying to walk a block, and finally walking miles. Though painful, my childhood wish to skateboard never disappeared. So I gave 69 (I) a skateboard on my birthday.
For a long time, I tried to learn skating on my own. I had no idea what I 70 (do) at that time and felt embarrassed when strangers saw me skating. That fear of being judged often stopped me from getting out there for practice.
One day, my friend Monica and I met some members of GRLSWIRL, a skateboarding club. They were 71 friendly that we wanted to be part of it. Although everyone there was excellent, they were happy 72 (help). There, I gradually became more confident.
Falling is 73 huge part of skating. Because of that accident, it was 74 (real) hard for me to overcome it. However, it opened up a new world of possibilities for me. The more I learned from every little fall, the 75 (good) my body and mind felt. I believe that if you want to succeed as much as you want to breathe, you will be a great success.

W: I see. Well, if you don’t feel comfortable asking the teacher, why don’t you try asking AI instead? You can use doubao to help organize your ideas. It is like an expert.
M: That’s a good idea. Thanks, I’ll give it a try tonight.

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the community volunteer center. My name is Susan and I am the manager. Thank you for coming today. I’m here to tell you more about our new project — elderly care. We’re looking for 20 volunteers to help the elderly in our community. Ten of them will do the regular service, and the other ten will do the special weekend events. First, the regular service includes tasks you might do once a week such as reading newspapers to them or helping them buy food. Helping them to have video chats with their family on the phone also counts.
Second, the special weekend events are group activities like helping clean their gardens or planning small parties to celebrate birthdays together. We have a system to record your service hours. For every 20 hours you serve, your school will record it as a part of your social practice points. I hope you will all consider joining this meaningful service. Now I’ve answered all your questions online. To give you a better idea of the experience, next let’s look at some photos from last year’s volunteers.
