Franz Kafka (1883-1924), a famous writer, never married and had no children. Once, at the age of 40, when he was walking through a park in Berlin, Germany, he came across a young girl crying. She had lost her favorite doll.
He helped her look for the doll, but they couldn’t find it. Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would look again. The next day, when they still couldn’t find the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter. It was “written” by the doll and it read “Please do not feel sad. I have gone on a trip to see the world. To share about my adventures, I’m going to write to you.”
Then a story began. It continued until Kafka died.
Every time they met, Kafka read her the doll’s adventure letters. Actually he wrote all the letters on his own, and the girl really enjoyed them. At last Kafka read her a letter, and in the letter the doll said that it finally came back to Berlin. Then he gave her a new doll. He had bought it in a shop.
“This does not look like mine at all,” she said. Then Kafka handed her a letter. It read, “My trips have changed me.” The girl hugged the new doll and took it home with her. A year later, Kafka passed away in Austria.
Many years later, the girl found a letter inside the doll. The letter, signed by Kafka, said, “Everything you love is very likely to be lost, but in the end, love will return in a different way.”

Wind is becoming weaker around the world. This phenomenon (现象) is called “global wind stilling”. Over the past 30 years, the average wind speed has dropped by 0.5 kilometers per hour every ten years.
The slowdown of wind speed can lead to some environmental problems. For example, it can make air pollution worse in some areas because the weak wind can’t blow away the polluted air quickly. Also, it may bring more extreme (极端的) hot weather in summer.
However, global wind stilling also has a positive side. It can reduce the number of sandstorms. As the wind gets weaker, it carries less sand. This is good news for some dry places. Besides, weaker winds make it easier for birds to fly and for plants to grow in some areas.
Scientists are still studying why this is happening. Some think it might be related to changes in climate patterns (模式) or more buildings and trees slowing down the wind near the ground. Understanding global wind stilling will help us better prepare for its effects on our lives and the environment.
47. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The causes of air pollution around the world. B. The reasons why birds find it easier to fly now.
C. How scientists study changes in climate patterns. D. A phenomenon of weaker wind and its effects.
48. What is “global wind stilling” in this passage?
A. Wind speed increasing rapidly over the past 30 years. B. Wind becoming weaker around the world.
C. A new type of air pollution caused by wind. D. Strong winds causing more sandstorms.
49. Which of the following is a BAD result of global wind stilling?
A. Birds may find it harder to fly. B. The number of sandstorms may be increased.
C. Air pollution may become worse in some areas. D. Plants may grow better in some dry places.
50. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Scientists need to study more to understand the phenomenon.
B. Building more houses and planting trees are useless.
C. Scientists fully understand why global wind stilling is happening.
D. Global wind stilling has no real effects on human life.
51. What is one possible reason for global wind stilling in the passage?
A. The increase of electric cars racing on the road. B. More buildings and trees rising from the ground.
C. Birds flying at higher altitudes. D. People using less energy at home.

Do you like eating rice? Thanks to Chinese scientists, this daily food has gained a new “superpower” — producing human serum albumin (HSA), an important blood protein (蛋白).
The technology is based on genetic engineering (基因工程). Healthgen Biotechnology, a company in Wuhan, Hubei Province, has been developing it since 2006. HSA helps keep fluids (液体) inside and outside blood vessels (血管) in balance. If there is not enough of this protein, for example, when people are in poor health, fluid inside the vessels may leak (泄漏) out.
In hospitals, HSA is widely used to treat serious illnesses such as cancer and lots of blood loss. Traditionally, patients get HSA from healthy blood donors (捐献者). But blood supplies are always limited. From ChinaIRN.com, China needs 1,500 to 1,800 tons of HSA every year, and over 60 percent comes from imports (进口).
Healthgen’s technology is a game-changer. Yang Daichang, head of the company said “We put human genes (基因) into the rice plant to produce HSA,” As rice grows, it can continuously produce HSA on its own.
This new method doesn’t require blood donations and avoids the risk of virus spread. It is also more cost-effective. Companies can increase HSA production simply by planting more rice. Besides, dried rice seeds can be kept for three to five years while keeping protein active.
At present, the company can produce 1 million doses of HSA each year. A new production plant is being built and will be put into use in 2026. It is expected to cut 25 percent of China’s imported HSA demand.
52. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To ask people to have more HSA in our daily life.
B. To introduce a technology to produce HSA using rice.
C. To explain why blood donation is important.
D. To compare different ways of treating cancer.
53. From Paragraph 3, why is there a problem when people get HSA in the traditional way?
A. Because HSA cannot be kept for a long time.
B. Because it is very expensive to get HSA from blood.
C. Because the supply of blood is not enough to meet the needs.
D. Because only a few hospitals know how to use HSA.
54. How does the new technology help solve the problem of HSA shortage?
A. By asking more people to donate blood to produce HSA.
B. By importing more HSA from other countries.
C. By inventing a machine that creates HSA quickly.
D. By putting human genes into rice plants to produce HSA.
55. Which of the following is TRUE about the new HSA produced by rice?
A. It is less safe than HSA from human blood.
B. It can only be produced in small amounts.
C. It can be kept for several years without losing its power.
D. It requires a lot of chemicals to make.
56. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The technology will help reduce China’s need for imported HSA.
B. China will no longer need to import any HSA after 2026.
C. The company will stop producing rice in the future.
D. The price of rice will become very high because of this technology.
