练习一:The Blue Umbrella(善意与传递)
It was the first day of the new term, and Lily arrived at the bus stop much earlier than usual. She had moved to the town only a week before and knew almost nobody at school. The sky was dark, and heavy clouds seemed ready to break at any minute. Lily held her new English book tightly, afraid that the rain might ruin it.
Soon the rain began to fall. At first it was only a few drops, but within seconds it turned into a shower. Students around her opened colorful umbrellas and moved closer to their friends. Lily searched her bag again and again, only to remember that her umbrella was still hanging by the door at home.
She stepped back under a narrow tree, but the leaves gave little protection. Her shoes were wet, and the cover of her English book began to curl. Just then, a blue umbrella appeared above her head.
“You can share mine,” said a boy with a gentle smile. Lily recognized him as the quiet student who sat two rows behind her in class. His name was Ben. They walked to school together, mostly in silence, but Lily felt less alone. At the school gate, she thanked him and hurried to her classroom.
During the morning reading class, Lily noticed that Ben was absent. Later, she learned from the monitor that Ben had gone back to look for his little sister’s lost lunch box and had been caught in the rain. By lunchtime, he finally entered the classroom, wet and pale. Some students laughed at his messy hair, but Lily saw the blue umbrella hanging from his hand, broken by the wind.
Paragraph 1: Lily stood up with the English book in her hands.
Paragraph 2: After school, Lily waited for Ben at the gate with something behind her back.
Lily stood up with the English book in her hands. Her face turned red, but her voice was clear. “Please don’t laugh at him,” she said. “This morning, Ben shared his umbrella with me, and my book stayed dry because of him.” The classroom became quiet. Lily walked to Ben and handed him a clean towel from her bag. “Thank you,” she whispered. Ben looked surprised, then smiled shyly. The monitor also came over and offered him a seat near the heater. Slowly, the laughter disappeared, replaced by friendly words and warm smiles.
After school, Lily waited for Ben at the gate with something behind her back. When Ben came out, she gave him a new blue umbrella. “It isn’t expensive,” she said quickly, “but I hope it can work until yours is fixed.” Ben accepted it, his eyes shining with gratitude. They walked to the bus stop together under the same umbrella, talking much more than in the morning. The rain was still falling, but Lily no longer felt like a stranger in the new town. She realized that kindness, once received, could become courage to care for someone else.
• “Please don’t laugh at him”直接推动冲突解决。
练习二:The Lost Seedling(劳动、责任与自然)
Our class was chosen to take part in the school garden project. Each group received a small seedling and was asked to care for it for six weeks. At the end of the project, the healthiest plant would be displayed at the school science festival.
To be honest, I was not excited. I thought planting was boring and dirty. My teammates, Anna and Rob, made a watering plan, but I often forgot my turn. When they reminded me, I always said, “It is just a plant. Don’t be so serious.”
One Friday afternoon, Anna had a piano lesson and Rob had a basketball game, so I promised to water the seedling before going home. However, my friends invited me to play table tennis, and I left without thinking about the garden.
That night, a strong wind swept through the town. The next morning, I suddenly remembered the seedling and rushed to school. The garden was a mess. Some pots had fallen over, and our little seedling lay on the ground, its thin stem bent and its roots half exposed. My heart sank. I imagined Anna’s disappointed face and Rob’s angry questions.
I picked up the seedling, not knowing what to do. Just then, Mr. Green, our science teacher, came into the garden with a box of tools. He looked at the plant in my hand and then at my muddy shoes. “Plants are stronger than they look,” he said gently. “But they need someone who refuses to give up on them.”
Paragraph 1: Mr. Green handed me a small shovel and showed me how to save the seedling.
Paragraph 2: Six weeks later, our plant stood in the center of the science festival.
Mr. Green handed me a small shovel and showed me how to save the seedling. Carefully, I placed the roots back into the soil, pressed the earth around them and watered the plant little by little. Then Mr. Green helped me tie the weak stem to a thin stick. My hands were covered with mud, but for the first time I did not mind. When Anna and Rob arrived, I told them the truth before they asked. To my surprise, they did not shout. Instead, Anna said, “Then let’s save it together.” From that day on, I arrived early every morning to check the soil.
Six weeks later, our plant stood in the center of the science festival. It was not the tallest or the greenest, but its leaves looked strong in the sunlight. Beside the pot, we placed a card: “A second chance needs daily care.” Looking at the seedling, I felt a quiet pride. I had once called it “just a plant”, but it had taught me more than any speech could. Responsibility, I learned, was not shown in big promises. It was hidden in small actions repeated with patience.

• “told them the truth”体现诚实与担当。
A Note on the Locker(友谊与误解)
Mia and I had been best friends since primary school. We shared snacks, secrets and even the same dream of joining the school drama club. When the club announced auditions for the new play, we promised to practise together every afternoon.
For the first few days, everything went well. Mia helped me pronounce difficult lines, and I helped her design simple movements. But one afternoon, she did not come to our practice room. I waited for thirty minutes and then left angrily. The next day she said she had a family emergency, but I noticed her laughing with another girl outside the music room. I felt hurt and said coldly, “Maybe you have found a better partner.”
After that, we spoke less and less. During the audition week, I practised alone. I did well, but the teacher chose Mia for the main role and gave me a smaller one. The news felt like a stone in my chest. I avoided her congratulations and walked quickly to my locker.
There, I found a folded note. It said, “Good luck, Emily. You are braver than you think. —M.” The handwriting was Mia’s. At the bottom of the note was a small sketch of us on a stage, holding hands and bowing to the audience. I suddenly remembered that Mia had always drawn tiny pictures when she wanted to cheer me up.

Paragraph 1: Holding the note, I stood silently in front of my locker.
Paragraph 2: On the day of the performance, something went wrong with Mia’s costume.
Holding the note, I stood silently in front of my locker. The anger I had kept for days suddenly felt childish. Maybe I had only seen what I wanted to see. I found Mia in the empty classroom, reading her lines alone. Before she could speak, I said, “I’m sorry. I should have asked instead of guessing.” Mia’s eyes softened. She explained that the girl outside the music room was helping her prepare a surprise poster for me. Shame burned my cheeks, but Mia simply opened her arms. We hugged, and the distance between us disappeared.
On the day of the performance, something went wrong with Mia’s costume. A ribbon broke just minutes before the curtain rose. Seeing her panic, I rushed to my bag, took out a blue hairband and tied it carefully around the dress. “You saved me,” Mia whispered. “We saved each other,” I replied. That evening, when we bowed together, I saw our small sketch come true. The applause was wonderful, but what stayed with me was a warmer lesson: friendship does not grow from never misunderstanding each other, but from choosing to listen, forgive and stand together again.
• “I should have asked instead of guessing”
练习四:Grandma’s Red Scarf(亲情与文化传承)
Every winter, Grandma wore a red scarf. It was old and a little faded, but she treated it like treasure. She said she had learned to knit from her mother, and the scarf carried the warmth of many winters. I never understood why she cared so much about such an ordinary thing.
This year, our school planned an international culture day. Each student had to introduce one object that showed family tradition. I wanted to bring something cool, like a model robot or a modern painting, but Mom suggested Grandma’s scarf. I refused at once. “It is too old-fashioned,” I said.
Grandma heard me but did not get angry. That evening, she sat beside me and told me the story of the scarf. Many years ago, when she was a young nurse in a mountain village, she knitted red scarves for children who walked miles to school in the snow. “A scarf is not just cloth,” she said. “Sometimes it is warmth, hope and a way to remember where we come from.”
The next morning, I found the red scarf folded neatly on my desk, with a small note: “You may use it if you want. If not, it will still keep me warm.” I touched the soft wool and noticed a tiny repair near one end, carefully sewn in the shape of a little flower.
Paragraph 1: At culture day, I finally took Grandma’s red scarf out of my bag.
Paragraph 2: When I returned home, Grandma was waiting by the window.
At culture day, I finally took Grandma’s red scarf out of my bag. At first, my voice was low. I described how Grandma had knitted scarves for children in the snowy village, and how a tiny flower covered an old repair. As I spoke, the room became quiet. A foreign teacher asked if the flower had a special meaning. I smiled and answered, “It means that broken places can still become beautiful.” To my surprise, many classmates came closer to touch the scarf gently and ask more about Grandma.
When I returned home, Grandma was waiting by the window. I wrapped the scarf around her shoulders and told her everything. She listened with shining eyes, holding my hand as if I had brought back something more precious than the scarf itself. “Grandma,” I said softly, “may I learn to knit from you?” Her smile spread slowly, warm as winter sunshine. That day, I understood that tradition was not something old locked in the past. It was love passed from hand to hand, waiting for the next person to carry it forward.
• “broken places can still become beautiful”兼具物件解释与主题深度。
• 结尾“passed from hand to hand”适用于文化传承类主题。
练习五:The Empty Seat(包容与同理心)
There was an empty seat beside me on the school bus, but nobody wanted to take it. The seat was usually used by Noah, a new student who spoke very little. He had a habit of holding a small notebook and drawing people instead of talking to them. Some students thought he was strange.
One Monday morning, our teacher asked us to work in pairs for a history project. Before I could choose my best friend, the teacher said, “Sarah, please work with Noah.” A few classmates giggled. I felt my face grow hot. Noah only nodded and opened his notebook.
For the next few days, I did most of the talking. Noah listened carefully but said almost nothing. I became impatient. “If you don’t help, we won’t finish,” I complained. He lowered his eyes and pushed the notebook toward me. Inside were detailed drawings of old streets, markets and people in traditional clothes. At the bottom of each page were short notes in neat handwriting. I was amazed.
On presentation day, I suddenly lost my voice because of a bad cold. My throat hurt so much that I could barely read one sentence. The classroom waited. Our project poster was on the board, and all the words I had prepared seemed useless now. Noah stood beside me, holding his notebook tightly.
Paragraph 1: Then Noah stepped forward and opened his notebook.
Paragraph 2: The next morning, I saw the empty seat beside me on the bus again.
Then Noah stepped forward and opened his notebook. Instead of reading from our poster, he showed the class his drawings one by one. His voice was soft, but his ideas were clear. He explained how people traded in old markets, what they wore and why the streets were designed that way. The pictures made history come alive. When he finished, the classroom burst into applause. I looked at Noah with new respect and whispered, “You saved our project.” He smiled a little and wrote on the corner of the notebook: “You helped me speak.”
The next morning, I saw the empty seat beside me on the bus again. This time, before anyone could laugh, I moved my bag away and waved to Noah. “Seat saved,” I said. He sat down, surprised but pleased. During the ride, he showed me a drawing of the classroom, with both of us standing proudly beside the poster. Looking at it, I felt ashamed of my earlier impatience. Some people may not speak loudly, but they still have rich worlds inside. All they need is a seat, a chance and someone willing to see them.
• “a seat, a chance and someone willing to see them”是可迁移的包容主题升华句。
练习六:The River Call(冷静救援与集体力量)
Our class picnic was held beside a quiet river. The weather was bright, and everyone was excited. Before lunch, Mr. Lee reminded us not to go near the deep water. “The river looks calm,” he said, “but it can be dangerous.” We all nodded, though some students did not take the warning seriously.
After lunch, I helped collect rubbish near the trees. Suddenly, I heard a cry from the riverbank. A little boy from another family had slipped on a wet stone and fallen into the water. His mother screamed for help. For a second, everyone froze.
My first thought was to jump in, but then I remembered Mr. Lee’s safety lesson: do not rush into deep water without training; call for help; use nearby objects. I looked around quickly. There was a long branch under a tree and a rope in our picnic box. “Get Mr. Lee!” I shouted to my classmate Tom. Then I grabbed the branch and ran toward the riverbank.
The boy was struggling, his small hands hitting the water. “Hold on!” I shouted, though my own voice was shaking. I lay flat on the ground as Mr. Lee had once taught us, stretching the branch toward him. But the branch was still too short. The river carried the boy a little farther away.
Paragraph 1: Just then, Tom returned with Mr. Lee and the rope.
Paragraph 2: After the boy was safe, his mother held my hands tightly.
Just then, Tom returned with Mr. Lee and the rope. Mr. Lee quickly tied one end around the branch and asked several students to hold the other end. “Stay low and pull together,” he said. I stretched the branch again while Tom called encouragement to the boy. This time, the boy caught it. Step by step, we pulled him closer to the bank. Mr. Lee reached out and lifted him onto the grass. The boy coughed, then began to cry loudly. Hearing that cry, everyone finally breathed with relief.
After the boy was safe, his mother held my hands tightly. “Thank you,” she said again and again. I shook my head. “It was everyone,” I replied, looking at Tom, Mr. Lee and my classmates. My legs were still weak, but my mind was clear. I had wanted to jump in, believing courage meant rushing forward. That day taught me something different. Real courage is not careless bravery. It is staying calm, following the right steps and trusting the strength of a team when life depends on it.
