Students Help Seniors Go Smart
Many middle school students enjoy spending their free time playing video games or watching videos online. However, a group of students from Stars Middle School chose to do something completely different last month. They started a volunteering program called “Bridge the Gap” to help senior citizens in their neighborhood.
The students found that many senior citizens felt lonely because they did not know how to use smartphones to contact their families. To help them, the volunteers offered a “smart class” every Saturday afternoon. They taught the seniors how to make video calls, send messages, and share photos.
At first, some elderly learners were nervous about using new technology. However, with the students’ patience and encouragement, they gradually became more confident.
After four weeks, the program achieved great success. An 82-year-old grandmother even made her first video call to her grandson in Canada. “Though tired, seeing the look of joy on her face gave us a strong feeling of satisfaction.” Jack smiled. “We also listened to their interesting stories and learned a lot about our history.”

“Look! Is that a dolphin?” he asked excitedly.
“Yes! That is a Yangtze finless porpoise (长江江豚),” the guide replied. “People also call it the ‘smiling angel’ because the shape of its mouth makes it look like it is always smiling.”
The guide explained that the porpoise is the world’s only freshwater porpoise and lives only in China’s Yangtze River basin. It is very intelligent. However, overfishing, water pollution, and busy ship traffic have made life difficult for the species.
“Luckily, things are improving,” the guide said. He told Lin Tao that China introduced the Yangtze River Conservation Law in 2021 to help protect the porpoise. Local governments and environmental groups have also worked to restore habitats (栖息地) and build nature reserves.
Recent surveys show that the porpoise population has started to recover and has reached about 1,249. Some can even be seen near cities.

The Mogao Caves, also called the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, are in Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Built along the ancient Silk Road, they are one of the most famous Buddhist art sites in the world.
The caves were first built in 366. According to a story, a monk named Yuezun saw a vision of a thousand golden Buddhas there. Over the next 1,000 years, people created more than 700 caves. Inside them are over 2,000 painted statues (雕像) and about 45,000 square meters of colorful murals (壁画).
The murals were painted with natural materials. They show Buddhist stories, important historical events, and daily life in ancient China. To create them, artists first covered the stone walls with a layer of clay and other materials. They painted beautiful pictures on the surface after it dried.
However, these valuable artworks have been damaged by nature over time. Rainwater can enter the caves through cracks in the rocks, causing the paintings to come off. Wind, sand, and changes in humidity (湿度) can also damage the colors of the murals.
Today, the Dunhuang Research Center is working hard to protect the Mogao Caves. Protective doors and environmental monitoring systems have been installed. At the same time, experts are using modern technology to make high-quality 3D digital records of the murals.
Thanks to these efforts, future generations will be able to enjoy this treasure of the Silk Road.
