Hu Gang is a careful student in a vocational school. He usually arrives early for every class, so his professor was surprised when he did not come on Monday morning. In fact, Hu Gang woke up with a high fever and a bad headache. His nose was running, and he felt too weak to stand for a long time. His mother took him to the community clinic near their home.
The doctor checked his temperature and asked about his symptoms. After the check, she said Hu Gang had got the flu. She advised him to take medicine on time, drink warm water, and rest at home for four days. She also gave him a doctor's note. Hu Gang knew he should not go back to school too soon, because the flu could spread to other students.
When he returned home, Hu Gang wrote a sick note to his professor. In the note, he first explained that he was not feeling well. Then he gave a brief description of his illness and the doctor's diagnosis. After that, he asked for a four-day absence from lectures and said he had enclosed the doctor's note for reference.
Writing the note helped Hu Gang learn an important communication skill. A good sick note should be polite, clear, and complete. It does not need long stories, but it must tell the teacher what happened, how long the student needs to be away, and what proof is provided.
