Near a wide river, many small animals decided to build their houses along the bank before the rainy season arrived.
The rabbits and squirrels wanted to finish their houses as soon as possible. They picked light stones and branches (树枝), put them together carelessly, and soon had their simple houses. They played happily and laughed at a little beaver (海狸). The beaver worked slowly. He chose big and heavy stones, put them one by one carefully, and used mud to fill every gap (缝隙). It took him a long time. All the other animals thought he was foolish.
Some time later, heavy rain lasted for three days. The river rose quickly and a big flood rushed towards the bank. The rabbits ‘and squirrels’ houses fell down soon. But the beaver’s stone house stayed safe in the flood.
