Once the sun rose, I, Robinson, saw that the sea was calm again. I was happy to see that my ship was still there. “I think I can swim to it,” I told myself. So I walked down to the sea and started swimming towards the ship. When I got there, I swam around it, trying to find a way to get on board. Finally, I found a small hole on the side of the ship and managed to get in through it.
Inside the ship, there was a lot of water, but the sand under the sea was lifting it up in one place. The back of the ship was high out of the water, for which I felt very thankful because all the food was stored there. I was very hungry, so I started eating right away. Then I decided to take some of the food back to the shore (海岸). But how could I do it?
I searched in the ship and quickly found a long piece of wood. I picked it up right away. I tied some ropes (绳子) to it and used it as a way to carry the food and other tools I wanted to bring with me. Next, I needed a little sail (帆) from the ship, and then I was all set. I came back to the shore slowly and carefully. It was a big challenge to stop these things from falling into the sea, but I succeeded in getting everything onto the shore in the end. Once I got to the shore, I needed to find a place to keep my things safe...

After “xiaoman”, it’s time for “mangzhong”, a Chinese solar term (节气) for summer. This year, mangzhong starts on June 5th. According to this solar term, most of China will experience the hot days of summer but the areas around the Yangtze River experience rain.
In Chinese, “mang” has the same sound as another “mang”, which means “busy”. Mangzhong is also called by Chinese farmers as “busy farming”.
Tang Dynasty (618—907) poet (唐朝诗人) Bai Juyi described the busy days of people working on farmlands during the period in his poem, named Guan Yimai, “Farm families have few relaxing months. In the fifth lunar month, they are twice as busy...”
Besides showing the busy days on the farmlands, the poet praised (赞扬) the hard-working spirit of farmers. However, it’s different for people living in southern China, who work around the clock to plant rice.
Lu You, a poet during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), wrote a poem, which goes, “The rain comes in time during mangzhong and rice plants are ready to be on the farmlands. The new rice in every family is delicious.”
There are some festivals around mangzhong, which still exist (存在) even today.

For example, “an miao”, is a traditional farming activity in Anhui Province practiced since the early Ming Dynasty (1368—1644). Every year when the festival arrives, people make different types of bread and color them with vegetable juice. The bread is used to wish a good harvest (丰收) and people’s safety.
