Snowboarder Mike Schultz took part in his third and final Games at the Milan Cortina 2026
Winter Paralympics, which recently ended. He leaves behind a treasure characterized not only by
his medals but by the prosthetics()he designed. At this year's Games, they were used by 29
competing athletes, including the whole US Paralympic snowboard team.
Schultz grew up in Minnesota and was involved in sports from a young age, starting with
snowmobile racing. In 2008,he was injured in a snowmobile crash and had his left leg cut off
above the knee. After his recovery,he explored adaptive sports and was drawn to snowboarding.
As he trained and competed,Schultz found that most prosthetics did not meet the demands
of high-impact sports. In 2010,he built his own prosthetic leg and founded his company BioDapt.
He went on to become a three-time Paralympic medalist, winning gold in snowboard cross and
silver in banked slalom in 2018 and a silver medal in snowboard cross in 2022.
At the 2026 Games,Schultz earned bronze (in the men's banked slalom, standing on
the winners'platform with teammate Noah Elliott, who won gold using one of Schultz's BioDapt
prosthetics.Schultz said it was a "perfect run"to wrap up his 12-year Paralympic career.
Now retired,Schultz plans to focus on developing new technology with BioDapt. He told
The Week Junior that he encourages young athletes to grow from both success and failure."Sport
is a great way to learn what you're capable ofboth mentally and physically,"Schultz said.
21.What did Schultz do shortly after recovering from the accident?
A.He turned to snowboarding.
B.He set up his company BioDapt.

A house frame()holding a building up is usually made of materials such as wood, steel,
or concrete. However, building enough homes for the world's growing population with these
traditional materials could put a heavy pressure on the earth. Now,researchers at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)have developed a possible solution-a new way to
build house frames using recycled plastic.
"We've estimated that the world needs about 1 billion new homes by 2050,"said AJ Perez,
who led the MIT project."If we tried to make that many homes using wood,we would need to
cut down forests three times the size of the Amazon rainforest."In addition, producing metal
materials gives off large quantities of greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change by
holding heat in the atmosphere.
To approach these problems,Perez and his team mixed recycled plastic with bits of
fiberglass to create a strong new material. They used a giant 3D printer to shape the material into
floor supports called trusses(构架),designed to bear the weight of everything placed on the
floor.
The team printed four long trusses, each taller than a doorway. Each truss weighs about 13
pounds-lighter than a traditional wooden one-and took less than 13 minutes to produce.
When tested, the trusses supported more than 4,000 pounds, about the weight of a car. This
proved they were strong enough to be used in real houses.
Using recycled plastic in construction (could also help reduce plastic waste that
pollutes oceans and rivers.Plastic can take hundreds of years to break down in nature,so finding
new uses for it is important for protecting the environment.
The researchers hope that one day they will be able to 3D-print all the parts of a house frame,
turning waste plastic into useful products on a large scale.

A.By sharing a personal story and proposing an idea.
B.By reporting research findings and processing data.
C.By presenting a problem and offering a new solution.
D.By questioning old methods and suggesting a new one.
26.Why is the Amazon rainforest mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To illustrate the eco-friendliness of wood.
B.To compare different types of building materials
C.To stress the significance of rainforest protection.
D.To emphasize the heavy demand for wood resources
27.What does the author imply by mentioning the slow breakdown of plastic?
A.The MIT team's approach has environmental value.
B.Plastic waste poses a greater threat than other wastes.
C.Recycling alone cannot solve the plastic waste problem.
D.The construction industry is the largest producer of plastic waste
28.What is the current challenge for putting the new material into widespread use?
A.The material has to be tested with heavier loads.
B.The trusses must be made much lighter in weight.
C.A complete house frame has yet to be 3D-printed.
D.The 3D printer needs to print each truss even faster.

About 10 percent of the population over 65 are suffering weakness,a condition causing
extremely poor physical strength and increased risk of illness.A recent study in the journal Cell
b
Stem Cell has brought encouraging news for them.
Researchers tested mesenchymal stem cells(间充质干细胞).These stem cells came from
donated bone marrow.In a nine-month trial,148 adults aged 70-85 with medically examined
weakness took part. Some received one of four different doses (of stem cells, while others
3
received a harmless placebo.Neither the subjects nor the doctors knew who received the real
treatment until the end.
Results were outstanding. After nine months, those given the largest amount walked an
average of 60 meters farther in a six-minute walking test than the placebo group-about a 20%
t
improvement.Lead scientist Dr.Joshua Hare said,"The more stem cells we gave, the better the
patients performed."
Weakness is closely linked to chronic inflammation(慢性炎症)caused by an overactive

immune system. With age,the body generates high levels of inflammatory signaling molecules,
which damage blood vessels and muscles, leading to muscle loss.Current treatments mainly

involve nutrition support and physical treatment.
Mesenchymal stem cells are special because they can adjust the immune system without
causing rejection(),so patients do not need immune-controlling drugs. They appear to work
by repairing damaged tissues or generating beneficial molecules that encourage the body to cure
itself. In the trial,one-third of treated subjects improved so much that their weakness scores
returned to near-healthy levels.A blood marker related to blood vessel health also improved.
However, challenges remain. The trial lasted only nine months,so long-term effects are
unclear.Still, scientists believe this research proves weakness is not an unavoidable part of aging
but a biological process that can be the opposite.
29.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To present the result of the study.
B.To give advice on keeping healthy.
C.To explain the cause of muscle loss.
D.To provide the background of the research.
30.What can we learn about the experiment from the passage?
A.The experiment lasted more than one year.
B.All subjects got the same dose of stem cells
C.Doctors knew clearly who got real treatment.
D.The larger the amount, the better patients performed.
31.Why are mesenchymal stem cells special compared with other cell treatments?
A.They have no possible side effects at all.
B.They are easy to get from patients themselves.
C.They can cure all kinds of age-related diseases.
D.They won't lead to immune rejection responses.
32.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.A New Treatment for Weakness
B.A Simple Test for Weakness
C.The Science Behind Weakness
D.The Hidden Cause of Weakness

The Food Chain
The whole ecosystem of a location can become unbalanced with the disappearance of just
one species.33 In 1927,scientist Charles Elton explained how plants get energy from
sunlight,plant-eaters get energy from plants, and meat-eaters get energy from other animals
The food chain has four basic parts. The first part is the sun, which provides energy for
everything on earth. The second part is producers-all green plants. They make their own food

through photosynthesis, turning sunlight into chemical energy.34 Without them,no
other organisms could survive.
The third part is consumers.A consumer is any organism that eats something else, whether
it is a carnivore (eats meat),an herbivore (eats plants),an omnivore (eats plants and animals),a
parasite (relies on another living thing to provide food),or a scavenger (usually feeds on dead
organisms). The fourth part is decomposers, such as fungi (and bacteria. They break down
dead matter into important gases that are returned to the ground, air,or water.35
Look at a simple food chain:sunlight helps grass grow, rabbits eat the grass, and foxes eat
the rabbits. This chain represents a direct flow of energy from the sun to plants, then to
herbivores, and finally to carnivores.36 Since foxes have no predators, they are the top
of this chain.
_37 If something happens to the grass-for example,a drought occurs-rabbits will
have less food, and many may die. With fewer rabbits to eat, some foxes may also die or leave
the area.Although this is a simplified chain,it shows that the disappearance of one element can
have a lasting effect.
A.Producers form the basis of every food chain.
B.This is because of a system called the food chain.
C.The energy plays an equally important role in the food chain.
D.These recycled materials are then used by producers for growth.
E.Without a balanced food chain,an ecosystem could quickly fall apart.
F.Each link in this chain depends completely on the one below it for survival.
G.The interdependence within a food chain means even a small change has far-reaching impacts.

I never thought of myself as someone who could make a difference.I was painfully shy,the
kind of student who would rather write a ten-page story than have a two-minute talk with a
stranger. My world was comfortably small-school,home,and the familiar faces in between.
When our school announced the "Warm Your Heart"volunteer program, asking each student to
spend a Saturday at the Sunshine Nursing Home,my stomach dropped.Talking to elderly
strangers for a whole day?It felt like being asked to swim across an ocean.
Mrs.Wang, our head teacher, seemed to have a super power to locate unwilling students.
After class, she gently placed an application form on my desk."You have a kind heart,Lin Yue,"
she said softly."The elderly need your company.I believe you are the one."I wanted to argue
that I wasn't the suitable one,but she gave me an encouraging nod and walked away before I
could refuse. The form sat on my desk like a challenge I wasn't ready to face. That night,I stared
at it for an hour before finally filling it out.
I prepared as if it were an exam.I searched online for conversation topics that old people
might enjoy.I learned about traditional operas, old songs from their youth, and even practiced a
few simple paper-cutting shapes in case I needed something to share with them.My grandmother,
who lived with us,watched my preparations with interest."Just be yourself,"she advised."Old
people can feel your kindness."I nodded, but my anxiety didn't go away. What if I froze? What if
they didn't like me?What if a whole day of awkward silences confirmed what I already
believed-that I simply wasn't good with people?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右:
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
