One cold winter night in Shanghai, I was walking home at 1:00 in the morning after long tiring work. I was having trouble with my job in the bank. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up living there. City life had became too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible danger. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets (毛毯).
Suddenly, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, all I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. When I reached home, I realized what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Now I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched carefully for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) come to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Chen?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3:00 a. m. by the time I got into bed. But I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

Once there was a large stone in a family’s vegetable garden. People would often trip (绊倒) over it and get hurt. The son asked, “Dad, why don’t we dig out that annoying stone?” The father replied, “That stone you mentioned? It has been there since your grandfather’s time. It’s so huge. I don’t know how long it will take to dig it out. Instead of digging it out for no reason, it’s better to be careful when walking and it can also train you to think better.”
A few years later, the son got married and became a father. One day, his daughter said angrily, “Dad, I really don’t like that big stone in the vegetable garden. Let’s hire someone to move it away someday.” The father replied, “Forget it! That big stone is very heavy. If it could be moved, it would have been moved when I was a child.”

When Peng Jingxuan began playing the guzheng on the streets of France in 2018, she did not expect that the traditional instrument would change her life.
Peng began to study the guzheng when she was 7 years old. In 2017, she went to France to study for a master’s degree in music. There, Peng was deeply drawn to the various performances by artists playing musical instruments on the streets.
But she seldom saw Chinese instruments played on the streets. So, in the summer of 2018, she took her guzheng and began to perform on the streets. She was surprised to find that very few people in France knew about the Chinese guzheng.
“I wanted to make this known to more people,” Peng said.
She began to do street performances to sharpen her skills. The more Peng played on the streets, the greater sense of responsibility she felt to spread Chinese music and culture.
To make this traditional Chinese instrument better known to people in France, Peng carefully chose each song. She chose to focus on traditional guzheng pieces and a number of pop songs with strong Chinese influences.
Considering that the audience might not be familiar with Chinese songs and that might make it hard for foreigners to fully understand her performances, Peng came up with nice adaptations (改编) of the songs, receiving positive opinions from audiences. For example, she prefaced (为……写序言) “Big Fish”, a song from a Chinese film, with explanations in French, mainly introducing the movie.
“To see the guzheng become popular and get more people to know about it, understand it, and love it, I think this is the biggest wish of Chinese artists playing the traditional musical instrument,” she said.

A.In 2017. B.When she was 7 years old.

12.What was the main reason that Peng Jingxuan started performing on the streets?
A.Because she wanted to practice her skills and become a better player.
B.Because she wanted to make money to pay for her studies in France.
C.Because she rarely saw Chinese instruments being played there.
D.Because she was asked to do so by her music teacher.
13.How did Peng help the French audience understand the Chinese song “Big Fish”?
A.By playing it with a French musician.
B.By giving explanations in French before playing.
C.By changing all the words into French.
D.By showing parts of the movie while playing.
14.What can we infer about Peng Jingxuan’s feelings towards spreading Chinese culture?
A.She feels it is a hard task but necessary.

Early one morning, I saw romance in a place where I least expected to find it — a nursing home.
A few days earlier, I went to the nursing home to see my father. At that time, an elderly couple came to the home. Since there wasn’t a double room available, the old couple were separated from each other. The gentleman, Mr. West, was placed in a bed beside my father and he didn’t say a word. His wife, Mrs West, shared a room with other women nearby Mr. West.
One day, when I went to see my father in the morning, I met Mr. West again. To my surprise, there were three employees (员工) who were working with him in a very hard way. It is said that he hadn’t eaten for several days. While one nurse was trying to get him to open his mouth, another nurse was trying to ask him to drink something. The third nurse was standing nearby with a cup of water with an anxious face. Mr. West refused to open his mouth. Finally, he opened his mouth and only said the simple words about his wife. “Go get Mrs West,” and then the nurse said. “Maybe Mr. West will eat for her.” A few minutes later, a kind-looking lady was wheeled into the room with the help of a nurse. Mr. West smiled brightly just like an innocent kid. I couldn’t take my eyes off the couple. The love between them was obvious as Mrs West patted Mr. West’s hand.
With a soft voice, Mrs West encouraged Mr. West to eat. To everyone’s surprise, Mr. West opened his mouth and began to enjoy the food. While the nurses fed him, he stared at his wife with a smile on his face. Mrs West began humming a tune (哼调子) to him. My eyes were filled with tears. I discovered that romance doesn’t only exist when we’re young and in love. Romance lasts a lifetime and grows stronger with age.
To my delight, Mr. and Mrs West live together again in a place where there are no nursing homes or wheelchairs. There are no tears in their eyes or rooms dividing them.

I usually took a bus to school. I found that most passengers were silent and never had a conversation with anyone else.
About a year ago, an old man got on the bus and said loudly to the driver, “Good morning!” Most people looked up, wondering why, and the bus driver didn’t take it seriously and just replied in a cold voice, “Mm-hmm.” The next day the man got on and again he said in a loud voice, “Good morning!” to the driver. Another “Mm-hmm”. By the fifth day, the driver finally answered him with a little happy, “Good morning!” Then the man said, “My name is Benny.” The driver told the man that he was Sam.
That was the first time any of us had heard the driver’s name and soon people began to talk to each other and say hello to Sam and Benny. Soon Benny spread his happy “Good morning!” to the whole bus. Within a few days, his “Good morning!” was returned by a lot of “Good mornings” and the whole bus seemed to be friendlier. People got to know each other.
“Benny truly showed friendship among us with a simple ‘Good morning’,” I thought.
Then suddenly, Benny stopped showing up. Everyone began to ask about Benny, wondering what happened to him. No one knew what to do and the bus got quiet again. So, last week, I started to act like Benny and say “Good morning!” to everyone and the whole bus cheered up again. Hopefully, Benny could come back to see his “Good morning!” mattered a lot.

“Wow!” said Susan. “I have finished my homework and I’m going to paint a picture of our stairs. It’s for a competition in school tomorrow.”
“Do you need any help?” her father asked. “It’s almost time for bed.”
“I’ll be quick,” said Susan. “I wonder what color to use.”
“Well, our stairs are brown.” said her father.
“Thanks, Dad.” said Susan.
When she finished her picture, Susan began playing with her brush which was still wet. Suddenly, she dropped the brush right on the picture! There in the middle of her picture was a blob (污点) of brown paint!
“Oh, Dad! What will I do?” Susan cried. “My picture is ruined. And it’s too late to paint another.”
“Let me see,” said her father. “The blob looks just like a spot on a dog. All you have to do is to draw a dog around the spot!”
“That’s a wonderful idea!” cried Susan. She drew a dog around the blob of brown paint. “That looks just fine. You know, few things are as bad as they are seen at first. With a little imagination you can turn the bad into the good.” said Susan’s father.
The next day Susan went to school early. When the competition began, Mr. King said, “I’ve chosen three pictures, and I want you to say which one you like best.” The children did not like the first one. The next picture was on black paper, but the stairs were red. So it was not so good. Then Mr. King showed the third painting. It was Susan’s!
“The stairs are straight.” said Joe.
“Yes, and the brown paint shows up well on the white paper.” said Lucy.
“The little dog seems to belong there.” said Terry.
The children voted and Susan’s painting won.
“Susan had a good idea,” Mr. King said. “That little dog finished a good painting. It made the stairs seem real.”

根据第二段“The father replied, ‘Forget it! That big stone is very heavy. If it could be moved, it would have been moved when I was a child.’ (父亲回答说:“别想了!那块大石头太重了。要是能挪走,我小时候就被挪走了。”)”可知,父亲告诉女儿不要挪石头,是因为他认为石头太重了,挪不动,该原因与选项B一致。故选B。
7.词义猜测题。根据第二段“One day, his daughter said angrily, ‘Dad, I really don’t like that big stone in the vegetable garden. Let’s hire someone to move it away someday.’ (一天,他的女儿生气地说:“爸爸,我真的很讨厌菜园里那块大石头。咱们哪天雇个人把它挪走吧。”)”可知,女儿想让别人来挪石头,结合生活常识,让别人做事通常需要付钱,由此可推测hire意为“雇人做事并付报酬”,即“Ask someone to do a job and pay them for it”。故选A。
8.推理判断题。根据第四段“Unexpectedly, it took only a few minutes to dig up the stone. Looking at its size, this stone was not as big as they thought. They had all been tricked by how big it looked.
