The decline of lions and pandas often captures global attention, but a quieter and potentially more damaging crisis is unfolding among small mammals. These tiny animals are disappearing at alarming rates, and their loss can have outsized consequences for biodiversity. Small mammals are powerful indicators of environmental health, yet tracking them has long been a challenge because many species occupy different ecological roles while looking almost exactly alike.
This challenge is illustrated by the two species used to test a new footprint technique: Bushveld sengis (象鼩) and Eastern Rock sengis. Although they appear nearly the same, they live in different habitats and face different environmental pressures. While the two sengi species look alike, their feet are not exactly the same. Tiny differences in foot shape leave distinct patterns in the footprints they make.
Researchers have now developed a new way to identify and monitor these animals by analyzing their footprints. The research team from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment focused on capturing and analyzing these differences, training a computer model to recognize which footprints belonged to which species. By treating footprint identification like a digital tracking problem, the scientists aimed to replace invasive (侵入的) and expensive monitoring methods with a faster and more practical alternative.
High - resolution images of the footprints were analyzed by using special software that measured shape and size characteristics. From this analysis, nine key footprint features were selected and tested against previously unseen images and sets of tracks. Across all trials, the system correctly identified the species 94 percent to 96 percent of the time.
The results show that footprint analysis can offer a simple, affordable, and non-invasive way to confirm species presence and track changes in population size and geographic range. The research team plans to expand the approach to other species by training new models with additional datasets. They also hope to compare footprint analysis with other non-invasive monitoring techniques to see how different tools can work together.
24.Why does the author mention lions and pandas at the beginning?
A.To criticize the public’s preference for large animals.
B.To show the ignorance of small mammals’ conservation.
C.To compare the living habits of different animal species.
D.To highlight the importance of large mammals research.
25.What can be inferred about Eastern Rock sengis and Bushveld sengis?
A.They live in the same habitats. B.They belong to the same species.
C.They need conserving differently. D.They have developed similar habits.
26.What does the author imply about traditional monitoring methods?
A.They are too complex to operate.
B.They distinguish different species well.
C.They will be replaced by digital ways.
D.They may disturb the tracked animals.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Ignored Decline Crisis of Small Mammals
B.Effective Ways to Distinguish Similar Small Mammals
C.Challenges in Tracking Environmentally Critical Species
D.A Novel Footprint Method for Tracking Small Mammals

S-N-A-K-E…SNAKE!
How do you feel when you see this word? Think about the animal’s long thin body, forked tongue, glassy eyes, and dull hiss. Are you afraid? I always am. Even after all these years, I still remember my first-and last-visit to the Reptile House at the Zoo. Through a sheet of glass, I saw a “white fur ball” running around. It was a poor little mouse, meant to be lunch for a white, red-eyed snake. “How awful!” I cried, running straight out of the exhibit.
So it’s no surprise that I panicked when I watched the trailer (预告片) for Zootopia 2. It features Gary the snake, the first reptile in Zootopia. But I was not alone. As soon as Gary appears on stage, the Zootopia citizens in the audience run away in every direction. The snake is considered a “bad guy” around the city, and the sequel (续集) follows his journey to “set things right, probably with some help from Judy and Nick.”
The short trailer got me thinking: Why are snakes unwelcome anywhere, even in an animated animal paradise? Are they “bad” because they can kill? That’s the law of the jungle, though — only the fittest survive. Or maybe this fear of snakes runs deeper. In many Chinese folktales, for example, snakes are mysterious. They have the power to bring terrible droughts (旱灾) and floods. If that’s the case, we may not forget that it was the snake-headed Nüwa and Fuxi who created humankind.
Research suggests that our fear of snakes may be inborn. My daughters, strangely enough, aren’t afraid of these legless animals at all. They love watching documentaries (纪录片) about snakes and will no doubt enjoy Zootopia 2. As they watch the film, they may finally understand why their strong father fears snakes. At the same time, I’ll keep wondering about my (and our) fear of snakes. Will Gary successfully “set things right” in Zootopia — and maybe, just maybe, in our hearts, too?
28.The author’s initial reaction to the word “snake” is ______.
A.curious B.terrified C.indifferent D.fascinated
29.In Chinese folktales, snakes are often portrayed as ______.
A.creators of human beings B.symbols of good luck
C.mysterious and powerful (with destructive abilities) D.gentle and harmless creatures
30.What do researchers suggest about the fear of snakes?
A.It is learned from parents and society.
B.It is an inborn instinct in humans.
C.It only exists in adults, not children.
D.It can be easily overcome by watching films.
31.The author hopes Zootopia 2 will ______.
A.make snakes more terrifying in animated works.
B.help people rethink their fixed impression of snakes.
C.become the most popular animated film of the year.
D.change the plot setting of Zootopia series.

Under the autumn sky of Tuohula Xinjiang, golden rice stalks sway gently. Ayinigeer Tuoheti, a 28-year-old computer science graduate, wanders through the fields, checking the ripening crop. Her digital skills are bridging the divide between her family’s traditional rice business and the modern age.
In 2020, Ayinigeer returned home to assist her father — who’d built a 1994 rice processing plant but his health weakened and struggled with business communications. She found the family’s work stuck in the backward reality: the ledger book, handwritten records, and carbon paper. She resolved to transform the business.
First, she turned their small farmer cooperative into a company. Exploiting her computer background, she automated invoicing, inventory, and order processing, shifting all work to electronic systems. To secure high-quality rice, she partnered with over 120 households, who transferred the management rights of their land to her company. Her company provided seeds and training, bought harvests above market prices, and shared profits-boosting farmers’ incomes while ensuring premium raw materials.
In 2023, she tried livestreaming on electronic sales platform. With a smartphone, she presented viewers with local rice fields, processing plants, and family meals with their local products. The initial phase was tough, but local governments trained her in livestreaming skills. Their authenticity won audience: daily orders grew from 12 to hundreds. Now, From March to September this year, they had 180,000 orders through livestreaming, with 7,000 on a single day-that’s nearly 35 tons of rice moving directly from their fields to households across China.
The numbers tell the result. In early 2024, influencers from across China were reaching out to us, she said. “They wanted to partner with us because our product had proven appealing.”
The phenomenal success of Ayinigeer’s livestreaming, however, stems not just from technology, but Tuohula’s rice quality: Wensu’s temperature swings, selenium-rich soil, and Tianshan snowmelt water make it sweet and aromatic. Local farming is 98% mechanized, and a 1998 seed base (investing 1 million yuan yearly) develops high-quality varieties-including the seeds Ayinigeer uses.
32.What did Ayinigeer do first to improve the family business?
A.She started livestreaming on Douyin.
B.She modernized the operation system.
C.She partnered with over 120 local households.
D.She inspected crops personally.
33.Why could Ayinigeer’s sales model attract viewers?
A.She offered very low rice prices.
B.She used professional broadcasting equipment.
C.She presented authentic rice production scenes.
D.She accumulated many followers before livestreaming.
34.What can we infer about Tuohula’s rice?
A.It is popular all over the world.
B.Local natural conditions contributed to its popularity.
C.It is only sold in southern Xinjiang.
D.Its production cost is much lower than average.
35.Which is the most appropriate title?
A.Digital Skills Revive Hometown Rice B.Livestreaming Makes Rice Famous
C.Graduate Succeeds in Rice Business D.Quality Rice Boosts Agriculture

How Traveling to Italy Changed My Perspective on Life
One of the first lessons my Italy travel story taught me was the value of slowing down. Life at home often felt like a rush, with schedules dictating every hour. In Italy, I noticed a different pace. Meals were never hurried, and daily routines had an intentional comfort. 36 .
Food is central to any Italy travel story. 37 . From handmade pasta in a family-run Italian restaurant to fresh seafood on the Amalfi Coast, food was never just about eating; it was about sharing, connecting, and honoring tradition.
38 . My Italy travel story is filled with moments of awe: looking at the Colosseum (罗马斗兽场) and walking past Renaissance art in Florence. What struck me most was how history and beauty weren’t hidden away but part of everyday life. This perspective carried into my appreciation for modern experiences too.
Another powerful lesson was learning to step beyond my comfort zone. Speaking in a language I barely knew, walking through train stations, and navigating streets forced me to rely on resilience. 39 . In the process, I gained confidence that continues to influence how I approach life.
Italy travel showed me that beauty doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful. 40 , the laughter of a family at a Sunday dinner, or the sound of church bells echoing through a quiet village. My Italy travel story became a reminder that beauty exists in small, everyday moments if we take the time to notice them.
A.The Italian lifestyle revealed the importance of balance
B.Instead of avoiding challenges, I learned to accept them
C.Every meal felt like an invitation into the country’s soul
D.Walking through Italy feels like stepping into a living museum
E.It can be in the way sunlight reflects off old buildings in Venice
F.It’s about learning from another culture and carrying those lessons home
G.The rhythm reminded me that time should be valued, not raced through

Leo had always been the “quiet kid” in the noisy halls of Northwood High. While his classmates argued passionately in debates or dominated the basketball court, Leo found his home in the photography darkroom. There, surrounded by the faint smell of chemicals, he felt a sense of control. He saw the world through his lens (镜头) — a world of silent moments, shadow and light that told stories words could not.
His father, a former athlete who thrived on competition, worried about him. “Leo, you need to put yourself out there. Join a club, play a sport — something that builds character,” he would say, holding back a sigh of disappointment. Leo understood his father’s concern but felt a familiar knot tighten in his stomach at the thought of public speaking or team sports. To him, his father’s world of loud cheers and high-fives felt like a foreign country.
The turning point came when the school announced the annual “Youth Vision” charity auction (拍卖). Students were invited to donate items or services to raise funds for the local children’s hospital. While flipping through his portfolio (作品集) one evening, Leo paused at a photo he had taken of an elderly carpenter’s hands. The image was full of details — the wood dust on his skin, the deep lines telling a lifetime of stories. A rare spark of courage lit up within him. The next day, he approached the event organizer, Ms. Rivera. “I’d like to donate a custom photography session,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “A portrait session for a family. I’ll capture their story.”
Ms. Rivera’s eyes widened in pleasant surprise. “Leo, that’s a wonderful idea! But,” she added gently, “you’ll need to present it. At the auction. In front of the whole school.”
注意:
1、续写词数应为 150 左右;
The announcement hit Leo like a wave, and he felt his old fear return.

(Text 1)
W: Where’s my pen?
M: Oh, sorry. I left it on the table in the kitchen yesterday.
W: I can’t see it.
M: Oh, it’s by the phone. I used it to take a message and forgot to put it back in your bag.
(Text 2)
W: When will you arrive at the station? I’ll come to pick you up.
M: Well, the train leaves London at 4:30 p.m.
W: So you should be here at a quarter to six.
M: Yes. It takes one hour and fifteen minutes.
(Text 3)
W: We’ve been at this report for the boss since 8 o’clock this morning and there’s still no end in sight.
M: If you ask me, I think we should knock off now and start fresh in the morning. The boss probably won’t mind.
(Text 4)
M: What are you doing in town? I thought you were going to college in Florida.
W: I am. They’re offering virtual classes now, which is great because I can attend them from home. It’s just like having a private tutor, and I can communicate with the other students, too.
M: Oh, it sounds great.
(Text 5)
W: Could you give me a hand? I’m decorating my bedroom and I’m having trouble with the wallpaper.
M: Hey, I might be an expert on computers, but I’m not a great hand at decorating things.
(Text 6)
M: I’m so excited about the concert. I’ve been waiting ages for this group to visit our city.
W: Yes, but they say the tickets will be in high demand. Are you sure we’ll be able to purchase them?
M: Don’t worry; I have already called the lady at the ticket office, so when they go on sale, she will keep two tickets for us.
W: Wonderful! I was worried because I thought you would purchase them online and I’m sure their website will crash from the hits.
(Text 7)
W: How may I help you?
M: I’m looking for some information about the Wright Brothers. The city government decided to hold a festival in their honor this year. I want to include details of their childhood as well as their achievements.
W: I think you’ll find what you need on the second floor. Biographies are on the third-row shelves. You can use the computer on the first floor to check book availability. We also offer electronic books with a longer loan period.
M: OK. Thank you very much for your help.
(Text 8)
M: Tina, I’m sorry to bother you. But I’m afraid there’s a big problem.
W: Oh, what’s up then?
M: You told me last week that you would deal with the faulty desks returned by HDC, one of our local customers.
W: Yes, that’s right. I did send them the replacements for all the desks last Monday.
M: Well, the thing is, did you realize there were two kinds of faulty desks? The customer only received one kind of desk.
W: Oh dear, I didn’t realize there were two kinds. I’ll send them the other kind right away.
M: The problem is that now they want to get a refund.
W: Oh dear, that’s really bad. I’ll phone them now and explain everything. I’m really sorry about this.
M: That’s all right. There’s still time to solve the problem. I think it would be best to explain the mistake face to face.
W: OK. I’ll make arrangements as soon as possible. Sorry again!
(Text 9)
M: Have a seat. How can I help you?
W: It’s about my history exam. My professor gave me a very low grade. I focused my answers on the assigned topics, so I’m unsure why I lost so many points.
M: OK, let me take a quick look… Hmm. It looks like you know the material, but you don’t seem to know how to put it together in essay form. Lots of first-year students struggle with essay exams. It’s a common problem. It’s easy to fix.
W: How? What can I do?
M: First thing to do when taking any essay exam is to read the questions carefully. Then, immediately write an outline that makes use of any key information that comes to mind.
W: An outline? That seems like a waste of time. I’m always anxious to get my answer down, so that I can move on to the next question.
M: I understand that feeling, but starting with an outline will actually save you time in the long run. Without a structured plan, your ideas can end up disjointed. This leads to answers that lack a clear beginning, middle and end. They’re just facts that haven’t been connected.
W: OK, you’ve convinced me.
(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. Do you know McDonald’s? Well, the McDonald brothers opened their first hamburger restaurant in California in 1940 but within eight years, they closed it down and re-opened as a take-away restaurant. They offered practically no service. For example, you lined up for your food, paid at the counter and took it to your own table or car. They were highly recognized as the first people to invent the idea of fast food. But that wasn’t the only new idea they came up with. They also brought in the entirely new concept of specialization for staff in the kitchen. They had one person cooking the burgers, while another person was doing the milkshakes, and so on. They liked to advertise their sales performance and in 1950 they proudly put up a sign outside their restaurant telling the world that they had sold one million burgers. That doesn’t seem so many nowadays, but in those early days it was quite an achievement. Then in 1961 the brothers decided they’d had enough of the hamburger business so they sold the company for 2.7 million dollars along with the name. Today there is hardly a country in the world where you can not get a McDonald’s hamburger.

根据第二段“This challenge is illustrated by the two species used to test a new footprint technique: Bushveld sengis (象鼩) and Eastern Rock sengis. Although they appear nearly the same, they live in different habitats and face different environmental pressures. While the two sengi species look alike, their feet are not exactly the same. Tiny differences in foot shape leave distinct patterns in the footprints they make.(科研人员选用两种象鼩,开展一项新型足迹检测技术试验,这一难题便得以直观体现:丛林象鼩与东部岩象鼩。二者外形高度相似,却栖息于不同栖息地,面临的环境威胁也各不相同。尽管两种象鼩样貌相近,足部构造却存在细微差异。足部形态的微小区别,会让它们留下特征迥异的足迹。)”可推断,它们需要不同的保护措施。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段中“By treating footprint identification like a digital tracking problem, the scientists aimed to replace invasive (侵入的) and expensive monitoring methods with a faster and more practical alternative.(通过将脚印识别视为一个数字跟踪问题,科学家们旨在用一种更快、更实用的替代方法取代侵入性和昂贵的监测方法。)”

根据最后一段“Research suggests that our fear of snakes may be inborn.(研究表明,我们对蛇的恐惧可能是天生的)”可知,研究人员认为对蛇的恐惧是人类天生的本能。
根据最后一段“They love watching documentaries (纪录片) about snakes and will no doubt enjoy Zootopia 2. As they watch the film, they may finally understand why their strong father fears snakes. At the same time, I’ll keep wondering about my (and our) fear of snakes. Will Gary successfully “set things right” in Zootopia — and maybe, just maybe, in our hearts, too?(他们很喜欢看有关蛇类的纪录片,想必也一定会喜欢《疯狂动物城 2》。 在观看这部电影的过程中,他们或许终将明白,一向坚强的父亲为什么会害怕蛇。 与此同时,我也会一直思索自己(乃至我们所有人)对蛇的那份恐惧。 盖瑞能否在《疯狂动物城》里成功纠正过往、化解矛盾?或许,说不定也能抚平我们内心对蛇的恐惧呢?)可知,作者希望《疯狂动物城2》能帮助人们重新思考对蛇的固有印象。

The initial phase was tough, but local governments trained her in livestreaming skills. Their authenticity won audience: daily orders grew from 12 to hundreds.
根据最后一段的句子“The phenomenal success of Ayinigeer’s livestreaming, however, stems not just from technology, but Tuohula’s rice quality: Wensu’s temperature swings, selenium-rich soil, and Tianshan snowmelt water make it sweet and aromatic.
故选A项。

根据上文“One of the first lessons my Italy travel story taught me was the value of slowing down. Life at home often felt like a rush, with schedules dictating every hour. In Italy, I noticed a different pace. Meals were never hurried, and daily routines had an intentional comfort.(我的意大利旅行故事教给我的第一个教训之一就是放慢脚步的价值。在国内的生活常常感觉像在赶时间,日程表支配着每一个小时。在意大利,我注意到了一种不同的节奏。用餐从不匆忙,日常作息有一种刻意的舒适感)”可推知,本段核心在于意大利缓慢的生活节奏。G项“The rhythm reminded me that time should be valued, not raced through(这种节奏提醒我,时间应该被珍惜,而不是被匆忙度过)”中的rhythm和not raced through分别与前文的different pace及never hurried形成精准呼应,起到总结该段主旨的作用。
37.根据上文“Food is central to any Italy travel story.(食物是任何意大利旅行故事的核心)”以及下文“From handmade pasta in a family-run Italian restaurant to fresh seafood on the Amalfi Coast, food was never just about eating; it was about sharing, connecting, and honoring tradition.(从家庭经营的意大利餐厅的手工意面到阿马尔菲海岸的新鲜海鲜,食物从来不仅仅是吃;它关乎分享、联结和尊重传统)”可推知,本段围绕意大利食物展开,强调其超越果腹功能的文化意义。C项“Every meal felt like an invitation into the country’s soul(每一餐都像是邀请你进入这个国家的灵魂)”中的meal紧扣段落主题,soul则与后文食物承载的分享、联结与传统等深层内涵高度契合。

Speaking in a language I barely knew, walking through train stations, and navigating streets forced me to rely on resilience.(另一个深刻的教训是学会走出舒适区。 B项“Instead of avoiding challenges, I learned to accept them(不是回避挑战,而是学会接受它们)”中的accept challenges与前文step beyond my comfort zone和rely on resilience构成清晰的逻辑顺承,体现了从被动应对到主动接纳的心态转变。
40.根据上文“Italy travel showed me that beauty doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful.(意大利之旅让我明白,美不必宏大才有意义)”以及下文“the laughter of a family at a Sunday dinner, or the sound of church bells echoing through a quiet village(一家人在周日晚餐上的笑声,或是教堂钟声在宁静村庄中回荡的声音)”可推知,此处需要填入一个具体的、细微的美好意象,与后文并列。E项“It can be in the way sunlight reflects off old buildings in Venice(它可以体现在威尼斯阳光反射在老建筑上的方式)”中的It指代上文的beauty,且该句与下文两个“the...”

Paragraph 1:
The announcement hit Leo like a wave, and he felt his old fear return. His heart raced and his palms grew sweaty at the mere thought of standing on that stage. He instinctively stepped back, ready to tell Ms. Rivera he had changed his mind. But she simply opened his portfolio to the photo of the carpenter’s weathered hands. “This photo speaks louder than any speech,” she said softly. That night, alone in the darkroom, Leo realized he didn’t need to become someone else — he just needed to share what his lens already saw.
Paragraph 2:
The next Monday, as he walked onto the stage, the spotlight was so bright that he had to narrow his eyes. His voice caught in his throat as the sea of faces blurred before him. Then he held up the photograph — the wood dust, the deep lines, the unspoken stories — and began to speak, not about himself, but about the man in the picture. Silence fell over the auditorium, followed by a standing ovation that seemed to shake the walls. Walking off stage, Leo felt lighter than ever — not because he had conquered fear, but because he had finally shared who he truly was. His father waited in the crowd, offering no words, only a proud nod that said everything.
