British scientists say they have solved a mystery involving Stonehenge, the world-
famous stone monument in Wiltshire,England. The scientists reported this week that they
have identified where many of Stonehenge's large stones, called megaliths, came from.
Thousands of years ago, people used such stones to erect markers, monuments and other
structures.
The researchers said part of one megalith helped solve the mystery. The small piece of
stone had been kept in the US for over 40 years.Chemical testing suggests that most of
Stonehenge's megaliths, known as sarsens, came from an area called West Woods,25
kilometres away from the ancient monument, the researchers said.People set up the
sarsens at Stonehenge 4,000 years ago.The largest sarsen is 9.1 metres tall. The heaviest
weighs 30 tons.
David Nash of the University of Brighton led the study, which was published in the
journal Science Advances. He said that researchers still do not know how people moved the
stones to Stonehenge.
"Given the size of the stones, they must have either been dragged or moved on
rollers,Nash added,"We don't know the exact route but at least we now have a starting
point and an endpoint."Stonehenge also has smaller stones, called bluestones.Experts
believe these stones came from Pembrokeshire in Wales,250 kilometres away.A sarsen
core sample, taken during repair work in the late 1950s,gave important information about
Stonehenge's origins.
The core sample was given to a man named Robert Phillips.Phillips worked for the
company that was repairing the monument.Phillips took the sample with permission when
he moved to the US in 1977.Phillips returned it to Britain for research in 2018.He died in
2024.The researchers studied very small pieces of the sample to find where it came from.
It was similar to sandstone found at West Woods and all but two of the Stonehenge
sarsens.Nash hopes the finding will help people better understand the hard work that went
into building Stonehenge.
28.What does the underlined word "erect"in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Cut.
B.Build.
C.Adjust.
D.Crash.

Scientists say they have identified a chemical released by locusts()that causes the
insects to join in huge groups. On their own, locusts are mostly harmless. However, when
gathering, they can become highly destructive. The new finding could lead to new methods
to prevent locusts from joining to destroy huge areas of crops.
A recent study in Nature identifies a pheromone()believed to cause the insect's
swarming()behaviour.A pheromone is a chemical produced by an animal that
influences another animal of the same kind. The pheromone,4VA,was found in the
world's most widespread locust, the migratory locust. It is released from the insect's back
legs and sensed by other locusts'antennae().The pheromone powerfully drew locusts
of both sexes and all ages, and was produced when just four to five locusts came together.
Migratory locusts live in Asia,Africa,Australia and New Zealand. They attack crops, and
such invasions()can cause major food shortages.
Lead researcher Le Kang is with the Chinese Academy of Sciences'Institute of
Zoology.Kang said further research is needed to see if 4VA exists in other species, like the
desert locust, which is currently destroying crops in Africa and the Middle East.
Chemicals commonly used to break up locust swarms raise human health and safety
concerns.Identifying 4VA could lead to new control methods.Kang said a chemical could
block 4VA's effects to prevent swarming.A manmade 4VA might also attract locusts into
traps to be killed.Locusts could also get genetic changes to not react to 4VA,Kang
added.Such locusts could be released to build wild non-swarming populations.
Leslie Vosshall, head of Rockefeller University's Laboratory, said one of the most
exciting developments would be finding a chemical that could block the reception of 4VA.
Vosshall noted there are still several unknowns about the research. These include whether
4VA is the only cause of swarm formation, and whether other locust species respond
similarly to the compound.
32.What can we infer about locust swarming?
A.It starts when a single locust releases 4VA.
B.It only happens to migratory locusts in Asia.
C.It makes locusts more destructive than when alone.
D.It can be stopped by existing chemicals easily.
33.What is a possible new approach to controlling locusts?
A.Using 4VA to make locusts attack each other.
B.Cutting locusts'back legs to stop 4VA release.
C.Blocking 4VA's effects to stop swarming.
D.Changing genes to stop producing 4VA.

Greening the Taklimakan Desert
The Taklimakan is China's biggest desert. It covers 337,600 square kilometres and
was once called the "Sea of Death".It is very dry-only about 50 mm of rain falls each
year, while much more water dries up.36
China started turning the desert green in 1978.That year, the Three-North
Shelterbelt Project began. Its goal was to fight sand and protect land in northern China.
37 They worked hard to stop the desert from spreading further.
38 They laid straw()in squares on the sand. This held the sand down,so it
wouldn't blow away. They also planted tough plants like tamarisks(and poplars(
)These plants can live with little water.Their roots grow deep, which helps keep the
sand in place.
After years of work, great progress has been made.By November 2024,a green belt
was finished. It goes around the desert. It is 3,046 kilometres long. That is the longest of
its kind in the world.39 This green belt has significantly reduced the frequency and
intensity of sandstorms. It has also improved the local climate, making the air fresher and
creating a more comfortable living environment.
The success helps local people a lot.It gives them a safer, nicer place to live.40
It shows that with effort and clever ideas, even dry deserts can be turned green. This
teaches us that humans can work with nature to make big changes, one small step at a
time.
A.Its goal?
B.What has it done?
C.Many people joined in.
D.People used smart ways to grow plants.
E.It also sets a good example for the world.
F.Shifting sand dunes()make life hard for plants and animals alike.
G.It is hard to believe how much the deserts have changed in recent years.

On January 16,an unexpected and dangerous incident happened in Virginia Beach,
Virginia. It took place behind Bubba's Restaurant on Shore Drive, where a woman
accidentally drove her SUV into the ocean water.Little did she know that a group of kind
strangers would soon come to her rescue and save her life from the rapidly sinking vehicle.
At that time,Jeremy Way,who had worked as a Navy aviation (rescue
swimmer for 17 years, was eating at Bubba's Restaurant. He noticed the car hitting the
water and immediately realized the danger.Without any hesitation,Jeremy jumped into the
cold ocean to help the trapped driver.A restaurant employee saw what was happening and
took a video of the heroic rescue process.
When Jeremy reached the sinking car,he shouted to the woman, telling her to unlock
the door quickly. However, the woman was too frightened to calm down."No,I'm not
unlocking it.I don't want to be here,"she cried.Jeremy tried his best to comfort her,
saying,"We've all been there, just unlock it."Unfortunately, the woman was so nervous
that she couldn't unlock the door no matter how hard she tried with her fingers.
Soon, other kind strangers joined Jeremy in the rescue. As the car was sinking faster
and faster, two of them worked together with Jeremy to lift the woman out of the water
just before the car disappeared completely under the waves.
After pulling the woman to safety on the shore,Jeremy held her tightly in his arms
and kept comforting her while they waited for emergency medical services (EMS)to
arrive. The woman was shaking violently with cold and fear, her lips turning blue, and she
kept coughing out seawater.Jeremy wrapped his coat around her to keep her warm, patted
her back gently,and kept saying,"It's okay now;you're safe.Help is coming soon."The
other strangers also gathered around, asking her if she felt better and trying their best to
calm her down.
