Long long ago, there lived a strong and kind giant named Kua Fu. He made his home in a quiet mountain area in the north of ancient China. He loved his people deeply and always cared about their lives.
One year, a terrible drought (旱灾) hit the land. The sun kept shining brightly all day long. The weather became extremely (极端地) hot. Slowly, all the rivers around dried up, green grass and tall trees died one after another. People had no clean water to drink and no fresh food to eat. They suffered (受痛苦) a lot from the great heat and dry weather. Seeing everyone living a hard life, Kua Fu felt very sad. He made a brave decision to run after the sun. He hoped to catch it and bring gentle weather to the world to make his people live a happy and comfortable life.
Early the next morning, as soon as the sun appeared (出现) in the sky, Kua Fu started his great journey. He ran as fast as he could and never stopped to take a rest. On his way, he crossed countless (无数的) high mountains and wide rivers. After running for many days without a break, he felt extremely thirsty. He went to the Yellow River and the Wei River, and drank up all their water in a short time. Even so, he still felt thirsty. Someone told him there was a huge lake full of fresh water far in the north. Without hesitation (犹豫), he kept running towards that lake.
However, Kua Fu used up all his strength on the long road. He became weaker and weaker. At last, he fell heavily on the ground and passed away. Before his last breath, he threw his wooden walking stick far away. To everyone’s surprise, the stick quickly grew into a big peach forest. The thick trees brought cool shade (阴凉处), and sweet peaches grew on the branches. Later, this forest helped many tired travelers along the way.
Kua Fu didn’t succeed in catching the sun in the end. But his courage (勇气) and strong will moved people for thousands of years. Today, this famous Chinese myth is still popular among teenagers.
