My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.②
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire.⑨ Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.③
My plan was working out just fine.① Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room.⑤ Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice.⑦ Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.⑧长短句结合
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first.⑥ However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.④
I realized it was me who was at fault.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door.
Who
I (自负),my brother(丧妻,健康问题,对狗的依赖), my wife, Toby
When
in the early summer→a few days later→two months later
Where
in our new house
What
Para. 1 I realized it was me who was at fault.
Para. 2 With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door.
Para. 2 I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside→“我”固执(坚持不让Toby进屋)
Para. 6 I resisted, thinking he should call first→以自我为中心(认为弟弟应先联系自己)
Para. 4 my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog
Para. 6 He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away ... Toby was his constant companion ...→因失去妻子而依赖Toby
Para. 6 My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother ...→
Para. 2 I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside
Para. 4 I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house ...
Para. 6 Two months passed.
Para. 5 His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually:“Not a chance.”
Para. 6 Toby was his constant companion→Toby
Para. 1 She had prepared lots of snacks和续写第二段首句中的biscuits→食物象征善意与破冰
It felt good to reconnect.

I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.

My grandfather was a stern man. He always stood straight, his body lean and strong from the physical work of farming. When I was young, I thought he seemed awfully big.
A glance from him was enough to keep my sisters and me in line. Yet every summer I looked forward to seeing him.
Grandpa tolerated us. We were like flies that hovered around him all day. He was not a man who showed emotion easily. There were times he caught us red-handed, touching some of his possessions or exploring places we weren’t supposed to, and his quiet scolding left us well-behaved for the rest of our stay.
But the summer I turned nine was different. One morning I heard clickety-clack, clickety-clack, clickety-clack, ping. It stopped me in my tracks. I hid behind a pillar and peered at the source of the sound: Grandpa in his study, typing a letter. I leaned farther to see better, then tripped and fell through the door.
For a while I lay on the floor. I was sorry, so sorry! I stood up, red in the face and trying to make myself invisible.
He shot me a glance. I looked at the floor and hoped the scolding would be short. He called me over. I approached him slowly. He asked what I was doing.I told him I’d been fascinated by the sound of the typewriter. I’d only wanted to get a better look; I wasn’t going to touch anything, I promised.
He didn’t say anything else.
Unsure what to do, I stood near his elbow watching him type. I longed to touch the beautiful yellow keys and the lovely black space bar. The keys hit the ribbon, and letters appeared on the paper as if by magic.
The rest of the summer I’d hear the sounds of typewriter keys and wander toward them, fearfully at first but more confidently when I realized Grandpa didn’t seem to mind. I stood silently, admiring the wonder of the words forming on the page.

I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. There it was our very own pumpkin. Its face was proudly decorated with a blue silk ribbon, signifying (表示) our second place in the contest. A sudden urge to come clean (全盘招供;和盘托出) overwhelmed me. I admitted to Brian that we had indeed secured the second position in the Halloween pumpkin-carving competition. Brian flashed a grin and scratched his head Eyes twinkling with playfulness (眼中闪着顽皮的光), he disclosed the truth (揭开真相). As the school newspaper photographer, he had taken that picture the next day after the contest. It hit me like a punch (如遭重击): He’d known about our win all along.
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything?” I was shocked. Brian glanced down at (低头看) his half-packed suitcase then up at me. He admitted that constantly relying on me had always made him feel small, and he was supposed to (理应) be the bigger brother. I’d never really thought about how he felt. I was just the big bodyguard for poor Brian. I was so caught up in my role that I never saw it from his perspective. “I just wanted to do the same for you.” Brian interrupted my thoughts. “To be the real bigger brother, for a change.” We sat silently on his bed, realizing we were more than just siblings; we were each other’s guardian angel
A sudden urge to come clean overwhelmed me.

Farhan was seconds away. Aminah threw one end of the scarf to Farhan, stretching it across Farhan’s path to signal him to grab on. Letting go of (放手) the handlebars, he reached for his lifeline. As the girls felt the heavy tug of his weight, the bicycle sailed beneath him. They all tumbled (翻滚) a few times down the hill, stopping just in time (及时;来得及) to watch the bicycle crash into the stream. Farhan looked at Aminah, then at his ruined bicycle, then back at his sister, “Thanks.”
Their father took the bike to see if it could be fixed. “If the bicycle can be fixed,” Farhan said to Aminah, “you and your friends can ride it.” Aminah smiled. On returning, their father announced, “You’ll have to save up the 100 rupees for the repairs.” The kids sighed as it was a real struggle Aminah sprang to her feet (跳起来) and ran into the house. She came back grinning and held out her hand (伸出手). In her palm was the reward her parents had given her for getting top marks: exactly 100 rupees.
In her palm was the reward her parents had given her for getting top marks: exactly 100 rupees.
