B
I was physically destroyed the first time I rode my bike home from Costco carrying a load of groceries. The 11-mile round trip left me with dead legs and the suspicion that I had made a mistake.
A month earlier, my 23-year-old minivan broke down for the last time. Rather than replace it, I decided a new “car-free” reality would encourage a healthier lifestyle. My aching muscles questioned the viability (可行性) of this plan.
Three years later, I now know that giving up my car was the first step toward solving a lifelong struggle: maintaining consistent physical activity. What started as a necessity-I had no car, so I must bike became a strategy: Errands (差事) are an opportunity for exercise.
I began seeking out new errands just for the exercise they would provide. Rain or shine, I became an errand-running machine. For most of my adult life, I’d been trying, and failing, to consistently exercise. Only now, as I hit my 60th birthday, did I feel I’d finally figured it out.
Michelle Fortier, a physical activity psychologist, mentioned that outside motivations, like doctors warnings and weight insecurities, do not result in lasting behavior change. “That can get people started, but it will not maintain their physical activity,” Dr. Fortier said.
My own behavior change, Dr. Fortier explained, was probably the result of combining two intrinsically (内在地) generated motivations that had nothing to do with body-image fears or outside pressures: I love to ride my bike, and I love the satisfaction of getting things done.
Recognizing that day-to-day tasks often involve movement is an opportunity to build physical activity habits into our everyday lives. But you’d better pay attention to the pleasure principle, begin with what you like, and then work yourself into shape.
41. How did the author find his first-time biking trip to and from Costco?
A. Very confusing. B. Extremely tiring.
C. Rather worrying. D. Deeply embarrassing.
42. What problem did the author face before giving up his car?
A. He lacked enough money to buy a new one.
B. He was too busy to ride a bike to a grocery shop.
C. He had difficulty in doing physical activity regularly.
D. He found it challenging to drive a car over a long distance.
43. In paragraph 5, the author mentions Michelle Fortier to show _________.

根据第一段“I was physically destroyed the first time I rode my bike home from Costco carrying a load of groceries. The 11-mile round trip left me with dead legs and the suspicion that I had made a mistake.(我第一次从好市多骑自行车回家,扛着一车杂货,身体就垮了。11英里的往返路程让我两条腿都累坏了,我怀疑自己犯了一个错误)”可知,作者第一次骑自行车往返于好市多,感觉非常累。故选B。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“A month earlier, my 23-year-old minivan broke down for the last time. Rather than replace it, I decided a new “car-free” reality would encourage a healthier lifestyle. My aching muscles questioned the viability (可行性) of this plan. (一个月前,我那辆开了23年的小货车最后一次抛锚了。而不是取代它,我决定一个新的“无车”现实将鼓励更健康的生活方式。我酸痛的肌肉质疑这个计划的可行性)”可知,作者在放弃他的汽车之前,面临他很难有规律地进行体育活动。故选C。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Michelle Fortier, a physical activity psychologist, mentioned that outside motivations, like doctors warnings and weight insecurities, do not result in lasting behavior change. “That can get people started, but it will not maintain their physical activity, ” Dr. Fortier said.(体育活动心理学家米歇尔·福捷提到,外在动机,比如医生的警告和对体重的不安全感,不会导致持久的行为改变。“这可以让人们开始运动,但并不能维持他们的身体活动,”福捷博士说)”可知,作者提到Michelle Fortier来说明内在动机的重要性。故选D。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“My own behavior change, Dr. Fortier explained, was probably the result of combining two intrinsically (内在地) generated motivations that had nothing to do with body-image fears or outside pressures: I love to ride my bike, and I love the satisfaction of getting things done.(福捷博士解释说,我自己的行为改变可能是两种内在动机结合的结果,这两种动机与对身体形象的恐惧或外界压力无关:我喜欢骑自行车,我喜欢完成任务的满足感)”可知,在作者持久的行为改变中,一种满足感起了重要作用。故选A。
根据第三段“Three years later, I now know that giving up my car was the first step toward solving a lifelong struggle: maintaining consistent physical activity. What started as a necessity-I had no car, so I must bike became a strategy: Errands (差事) are an opportunity for exercise.(三年后,我现在知道,放弃我的车是解决一个终身难题的第一步:保持持续的体育锻炼。一开始是必需品——我没有车,所以我必须骑自行车——现在变成了一种策略:跑腿是锻炼身体的机会)”结合文章主要讲述了作者放弃汽车,选择用自行车进行锻炼,并坚持了下来,收获了满足感的经历可知,B选项“我是如何把我的差事变成锻炼的”最符合文章标题。故选B。
C
For a long time, science and culture held that the human sense of smell was underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was started by 19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result, smell has long been seen as the least important of the human senses.
However, new research challenges this misunderstanding. Scientists have found that the human nose is far more skilled than once thought. In carefully managed experiments, humans can detect certain smells at levels lower than many animals, including rats, bats, and some monkeys. For example, the special smell added to natural gas to warn us of leaks can be sensed by humans even when only a few drops are mixed into an amount of water as large as an Olympic swimming pool.
The power of smell goes far beyond simple detection; it strongly influences human behavior, often unconsciously. The weak smell of cleaning products, for example, can lead people to clean up. The familiar smell of coffee actually improves focus and mental performance. Stores often use “scent marketing”, understanding that the smell of fresh bread can create a friendly environment, and raise the chance of buying things.
The way the human brain processes smell is also quite different from other senses. While vision provides a detailed map of our surroundings, smell creates a holistic impression, mixed with inputs from other senses and emotions. The awareness of a lemon’s smell, for example, can be made stronger by its bright yellow color. Similarly, feelings of hunger or memories of past sickness can greatly change how we experience food smells, making them either attractive or unpleasant.
This deep link between smell, memory, and emotion explains why smell loss (anosmia) can so severely damage one’s quality of life. As experienced by millions during the COVID-19 pandemic, anosmia can lead to a loss of appetite, as much of flavor comes from smell, and can cause sadness and emotional disconnection. It can make people feel separated from the world and their memories.
Clearly, our sense of smell is not minor or unnecessary. It is a complex and powerful tool that continuously and quietly guides our interactions with the world, protects our well-being, and adds a rich, emotional layer to life.
46. What is the traditional belief about the human sense of smell?
A. Superior to animals’. B. Key to emotional memory.
C. Weak and unimportant. D. Complex but misunderstood.
47. What is implied by the gas leak example?
A. Dogs are unnecessary for gas detection. B. Humans can smell better than believed.
C. Human safety relies mainly on smell. D. The study aimed to compare species.
48. What do we learn about smell from Paragraph 4?
A. It gives environmental analysis. B. It is key to human survival.
C. It combines senses and feelings. D. It works without consciousness.
49. What is a possible result of anosmia?
A. Permanent taste loss. B. Better work concentration.
C. Connection with the world. D. Depression and isolation.
50. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To revalue the importance of smell.
B. To explain the causes of smell loss.
C. To discuss the history of perfume.
D. To describe the process of smelling.
C 47. B 48. C 49. D 50. A

根据第一段中的“For a long time, science and culture held that the human sense of smell was underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was started by 19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result, smell has long been seen as the least important of the human senses.(长期以来,科学界和文化界认为人类的嗅觉不发达,尤其是与动物相比。这一观念由19世纪的思想家提出,并因20世纪20年代一项缺乏有力依据的研究而得到强化。因此,嗅觉一直被视为人类感官中最不重要的一种。)”可知,传统观点认为人类嗅觉微弱且不重要。故选C项。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Scientists have found that the human nose is far more skilled than once thought. In carefully managed experiments, humans can detect certain smells at levels lower than many animals, including rats, bats, and some monkeys. For example, the special smell added to natural gas to warn us of leaks can be sensed by humans even when only a few drops are mixed into an amount of water as large as an Olympic swimming pool.(科学家发现,人类的鼻子比以往认为的要灵敏得多。在严格控制的实验中,人类能在比许多动物(包括老鼠、蝙蝠和一些猴子)更低的浓度下察觉某些气味。例如,为警示天然气泄漏而添加的特殊气味,即使在奥运会游泳池那么大的水中只滴入几滴,人类也能察觉到。)”可知,这个例子表明人类的嗅觉比人们以往认为的更敏锐。故选B项。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“The way the human brain processes smell is also quite different from other senses. While vision provides a detailed map of our surroundings, smell creates a holistic impression, mixed with inputs from other senses and emotions.(人类大脑处理嗅觉的方式也与其他感官截然不同。视觉为我们提供周围环境的详细图景,而嗅觉则会形成一种整体印象,融合来自其他感官和情绪的信息。)”可知,嗅觉会结合其他感官与情感共同起作用。故选C项。
【49题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“This deep link between smell, memory, and emotion explains why smell loss (anosmia) can so severely damage one’s quality of life. As experienced by millions during the COVID-19 pandemic, anosmia can lead to a loss of appetite, as much of flavor comes from smell, and can cause sadness and emotional disconnection. It can make people feel separated from the world and their memories.(嗅觉、记忆和情绪之间的这种深层联系,解释了为什么嗅觉丧失会严重损害人的生活质量。正如数百万人在新冠疫情期间经历的那样,嗅觉丧失会导致食欲下降(因为食物的风味很大程度上来自嗅觉),还会引发悲伤和情感疏离,让人感觉与世界和记忆隔绝。)”可知,嗅觉丧失可能导致抑郁和孤独感。故选D项。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“For a long time, science and culture held that the human sense of smell was underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was started by 19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result, smell has long been seen as the least important of the human senses.(长期以来,科学界和文化界认为人类的嗅觉不发达,尤其是与动物相比。这一观念由19世纪的思想家提出,并因20世纪20年代一项缺乏有力依据的研究而得到强化。因此,嗅觉一直被视为人类感官中最不重要的一种。)”以及最后一段中的“Clearly, our sense of smell is not minor or unnecessary. It is a complex and powerful tool that continuously and quietly guides our interactions with the world, protects our well-being, and adds a rich, emotional layer to life.(显然,我们的嗅觉并非微不足道或毫无用处。它是一种复杂而强大的工具,持续而无声地引导我们与世界互动,保护我们的健康,并为生活增添丰富的情感层次。)”可知,文章先纠正人们对人类嗅觉的错误认知,再多角度论证嗅觉的重要作用,作者的写作目的是重新评价嗅觉的重要性。故选A项。
D
“A lie is halfway around the world before the truth has got its boots on.” It’s a well-known saying. But a more accurate version would be: “A confidently told lie is halfway around the world before the truth has got its boots on.” Because basically, we humans are far more likely to accept and believe information delivered confidently. By a confident person, or by a source using confident language, etc.
When two or more people are involved in a decision-making process where they know different things, confidently expressed arguments are perceived as delivering better information, which determines the decision. And as the modern world has shown us repeatedly, this regularly leads to undesirable outcomes.
Why would this tendency come about? Well, humans are highly gregarious, and during our evolutionary (进化的) development, most of our information about the world came from other people. So, if ancient humans heard someone confidently declare “There’s a tiger coming”, instinctively (本能地) believing them was a valuable survival skill.
Confidently delivered information may be more persuasive, but that doesn’t mean it’s correct, even if the confident person genuinely believes it is. We’ve all met someone who confidently lectures others on how the world works, despite being wrong about literally everything. It’s the Dunning-Kruger effect, where people with low ability/experience/knowledge about something often significantly overestimate their abilities/ expertise regarding it.
This is because the ability to recognize your intellectual limits requires sufficient intelligence. Lacking that, you won’t question your (limited) understanding, so you can mouth laughable nonsense with total confidence.
We live in a highly interconnected, increasingly complex society, where countless people and worldviews end up overlapping (重叠) constantly. So, someone who is objectively, unquestionably wrong, but still unshakably confident can end up convincing many others that they’re right.
Left unchecked, it can end up with individuals with no abilities beyond unshakeable confidence being put in charge. And that won’t end well for anyone.
51. What tendency is presented about humans in the first two paragraphs?
A. Hating bad results much. B. Believing lies too easily.
C. Trusting confident statements. D. Lacking decision-making skills.
52. What does the underlined word “gregarious” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sensitive. B. Competitive. C. Ignorant. D. Social.
53. Why do some people fall into the Dunning-Kruger effect?
A. They aren’t wise enough. B. They are hard to persuade.
C. They aren’t questioned by experts. D. They are afraid of admitting mistakes.
54. In what tone is the last paragraph written?
A. Approving. B. Doubtful. C. Enthusiastic. D. Concerned.
55. Which of the following statements is TRUE based on the text?
A. Confident people are always right. B. Confidence always leads to positive outcomes.
C. Confidence can mislead people. D. Lies are easier to detect than truths.
C 52. D 53. A 54. D 55. C
根据文章第一段“Because basically, we humans are far more likely to accept and believe information delivered confidently. By a confident person, or by a source using confident language, etc.(因为从本质上讲,人类更容易接受和相信那些自信传递的信息——无论是来自自信的人,还是使用笃定语气的信息源等等。)”以及第二段“When two or more people are involved in a decision-making process where they know different things, confidently expressed arguments are perceived as delivering better information, which determines the decision.(当两人或多人共同参与决策,且各自掌握的信息不同时,人们会认为表达自信的观点传递的信息更有价值,而这会直接决定最终决策。)”
划线词所在句“Well, humans are highly gregarious, and during our evolutionary (进化的) development, most of our information about the world came from other people.(首先,人类是高度gregarious生物。在漫长的进化过程中,我们对世界的认知大多来自他人。)”中划线词下文“人类对世界的认知大多来自他人”是对“gregarious”的解释,即依赖他人、需要与他人互动,由此可推断该词意为“群居的、社交的”。故选D。
【53题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“This is because the ability to recognize your intellectual limits requires sufficient intelligence. Lacking that, you won’t question your (limited) understanding, so you can mouth laughable nonsense with total confidence.(这是因为认识到自己智力极限的能力需要足够的智力。如果没有这些,你就不会质疑自己(有限的)理解能力,所以你可以充满信心地说一些可笑的废话。)”可知,邓宁-克鲁格效应的成因是认清自身认知局限需要足够的智力,而这类人缺乏这种智力,无法质疑自己的认知;由此可知,一些人陷入达克效应是因为他们不够聪明,无法认知自身缺陷。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Left unchecked, it can end up with individuals with no abilities beyond unshakeable confidence being put in charge. And that won’t end well for anyone.(若对这种倾向不加约束,最终可能出现仅凭极度自信却毫无实际能力的人掌权的局面。而这样的结果,对任何人都不会是好事。)”可知,作者指出若不约束相信自信言论的倾向,可能导致无能力却极度自信的人掌权,并明确表示这对任何人都不是好事,语气中充满对该后果的担忧。故选D。
【55题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Confidently delivered information may be more persuasive, but that doesn’t mean it’s correct, even if the confident person genuinely believes it is.(自信地传递信息可能更有说服力,但这并不意味着它是正确的,即使自信的人真的相信它是正确的。)”以及第六段“So, someone who is objectively, unquestionably wrong, but still unshakably confident can end up convincing many others that they’re right.(所以,一个客观上毫无疑问是错的,但仍然自信满满的人,最终会让很多人相信他们是对的。)”

Did you ever wonder where Legos come from? A box? A toy store? A factory? Yes. But where did they first come from? Who invented them? What was that person’s story? When you learn about the Lego story, you will be surprised!
Like many great inventions, the story is not just one of the great ideas, but of a ton of hard work, perseverance (坚持) and courage. The story starts off in Denmark. Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter who was struggling with his business. Then, his wife, the mother of his 4 boys, died. This was very hard for everyone. He was looking for new ways to make money and to make his kids happy.
So, he started making wooden toys. They were of great quality. His 4 sons helped him with his business and, soon, word spread and big orders started coming in. But then the toys did not sell very well. He decided his toys needed a new name. He chose the name “Lego”, which in Danish means “play well”.
Then, a few years later, his workshop was burned to the ground. Everything was destroyed. Ole almost gave up. But he decided it was very important to support his employees and kids.
Not long after, he started to make a few plastic toys. He then got the idea to create a ‘system’ of toys that would build kids’ imagination and creativity. He built a village to test the idea. And the idea caught on quickly! Soon sales were pouring in. Then he figured out how to connect the pieces to each other. Soon he decided to stop making wooden toys and focus only on the connected plastic toys.
Then they started to build more and more kinds of models. Each one had to be of the highest quality. Lego’s motto is “only the best is good enough”.
Thanks to the perseverance of Ole and his sons, kids around the world can enjoy Lego toys, movies, amusement parks, clothing and much more.

Finding Balance in a Digital World
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finding Balance in a Digital World
I’m Li Jin from Chenguang Middle School. After looking at the pie chart, I’d like to share my opinions on healthy screen time.
The chart shows how students spend screen time on weekends. Entertainment like games and videos takes up 45%, the largest part. Social media accounts for 30%, while learning only makes up 20%. Other uses take merely 5%. Clearly, most students waste most screen time on fun instead of study.
Too much screen entertainment causes lots of problems. It harms our eyes and ruins our sleep. Worse still, it takes up time for outdoor exercise and face-to-face communication, making us weak and less sociable.
To solve this, we should set strict time limits for entertainment. Besides, we can combine screen time with online learning to make screens serve our growth. Only in this way can we keep a healthy digital lifestyle.

When you’re choosing a college, a lot of factors probably may be considered: the school’s reputation, the classes offered, and the professors in your major, to name a few.

B. He was too busy to ride a bike to a grocery shop.
C. He had difficulty in doing physical activity regularly.
D. He found it challenging to drive a car over a long distance.
43. In paragraph 5, the author mentions Michelle Fortier to show _________.
A. the benefits of running errands B. the challenges in behavior change
C. the importance of regular exercise D. the importance of intrinsic motivations
44. What played an important role in the author’s lasting behavior change?
A. A sense of satisfaction. B. Warnings from doctors.
C. Tips from a psychologist. D. A fear for his growing weight.
45. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How I Overcame Outside Pressures B. How I Turned My Errands into Exercise
C. Why I Became a Fast-Running Machine D. Why I Dreamed of a “Car-Free” Lifestyle
