Passage 2
阅读短文及文后A~E选项,选出可以填入下面各题空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
By now, you’ve spent years sitting in front of a school desk. You also need to sit while doing homework or using your computer at home. 1 Here are some tips for you.
◆Start with your shoulders
Our shoulders play an important role in keeping good overall posture. Naturally, our body weight is supported by our spine (脊柱). Our back muscles (肌肉) have to work all the time to help us sit up straight. 2 That way, the muscles in our back and neck don’t have to work as hard.
◆Your arms need a rest
If your arms are not supported, they will sooner or later start to pull on your neck and shoulders. 3
◆Keep your screen or book right in front of you
If you keep your screen or book off-center from your chair, you’ll have to turn your body and head to see it. This is a common cause of sitting pain. 4 Raise or lower it slightly so that the top is at eye level.
◆Take breaks
5 Consider setting an alarm to check your posture every hour. It can help keep your body in good shape.
A.Make sure you take regular breaks.
B.Therefore, your chair should have armrests.
C.We need to keep our shoulders pulled back.
D.But do you really know how to sit properly at your desk?
E.Arrange your desk so that your screen or book is directly in front of you.
Passage 3
请阅读下面的短文,并从下列的六个句子中选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整、连贯。
Last month, I decided to try a challenge: living without my smartphone for one whole week. I had become so dependent on it for everything—chatting, watching videos, and even knowing the time.
1 My hand kept automatically reaching for my pocket, only to find it empty. I felt anxious and disconnected. To avoid temptation, I left my phone in a locked drawer at home. 2 This simple act forced me to plan my day instead of instantly looking things up online.
3 I started noticing small details I usually missed: the patterns of clouds in the sky, the different sounds of birds in the morning, and the actual expressions on my classmates’ faces during conversations. My mind felt quieter and more focused. I finished my homework faster because I wasn’t constantly checking messages.
When the week finally ended, I didn’t immediately rush back to my old habits. I realized my phone was a tool, not a necessity. I now turn it off during meals and family time. 4 It pushes our brains to be creative, to observe, and to simply think. I even started drawing again, a hobby I had abandoned years ago.
I’m not against technology. 5 But I’ve learned that sometimes, the best way to connect with the world is to first disconnect from the screen.
A.Instead, I carried a book, a notebook, and an old watch.
B.However, the first day was much harder than I had imagined.
C.By the fourth day, something interesting began to happen.
D.The experiment taught me that boredom can actually be useful.
E.My friends thought I was crazy and bet I couldn’t last two days.
F.It was a small change, but it made me feel strangely independent.
Passage 4

We live in a world full of choices. Perhaps everyone has experienced FOBO. It’s short for “Fear Of Better Options (选择)”. You might wonder, “Isn’t it a good thing to have many options in life?” 1
Luckily, there are some ways to deal with FOBO. To begin with, you need to know there are three types of decisions: no-stakes (无风险的), low-stakes and high-stakes.
No-stakes decisions are small choices that won’t cause any bad results, like picking a TV show. 2 Normally, it takes some time to think, but these results won’t change your life. High-stakes decisions are those very important ones, like buying a house or choosing a job. 3
So, first, before you make a choice, figure out which type your decision is so that you can put your effort into what really matters. 4 In this way, you can be confident that you’re truly making a smart decision. Third, remember that FOBO happens when you find it hard to choose just one from several acceptable options. So no matter what you choose, the bad influences will be small.
5 If you keep returning to that option, you might get stuck (陷入困境) and be unable to move forward.
A.They will have great effects on your life and even your future.
B.Second, make sure you learn facts about all of the options.
C.Remember, when you give up on an option, it’s gone forever.
D.Low-stakes decisions are small choices with acceptable results.
E.There’s no doubt that FOBO plays an important role in our life.
F.However, when you can’t decide, you waste valuable time and energy.

Passage 1
The Earth is the energetic planet that we call home. It was formed over 4.5 billion years ago. The Earth might seem like a rock ball, but it’s actually made up of four different parts.
The inner core (核心) is at the centre of the Earth. It’s a hard ball of hot metal, about 70 per cent the size of the Moon. The temperature of the inner core can be as high as 5,400℃ and it’s the hottest part of the Earth. The outer core circles (环绕) the inner core. Unlike the inner core, it is a liquid (液体的) layer, made mostly of iron. It’s almost as hot as the inner core.
The mantle (地幔) is a thick layer. It circles the outer core and is about 2,900 kilometres thick, making it the Earth’s deepest part. The mantle is mostly made of rock, but it also includes some magma (岩浆). The magma melted (融化) under high heat and pressure. It finally comes out from volcanoes.
We live on Earth’s crust (地壳), a layer of rock about 30 kilometres thick. That might seem thick, but it’s actually very thin, considering the size of Earth. There are two types of crusts: the mainland crust, which carries land, and the oceanic crust, which carries water. The thinnest parts of the crust are under the oceans, and the thickest parts are under the land. The Earth’s crust is divided into large plates. If you feel stressed at school, what can you do to make yourself happy? Some may eat their favorite food or listen to some music. Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found another great way to lower students’ stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine. 35 trained dogs and their trainers also took part in the test. The children were divided into 3 groups. The students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer. They watched the trained dogs perform and even played with them. They did this twice a week for 4 weeks. The second group spent the same amount of time (时长) doing exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students’ cortisol levels (皮质醇水平). Cortisol is a stress hormone (激素). The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What did the scientists find? Both the second and third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels right after playing with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs, and it helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way, which is good for students’ health. When the cat told the animals about the picture, they asked what a picture was. The cat explained that it was a wonderful piece of art. Then they asked about the mirror, and the cat said, “It is like a hole in the wall. When you look in, you will see a beautiful picture.” This made the animals excited.
▲ He decided to see the picture for himself. When he looked in the mirror, he only saw a donkey (驴). Then he quickly returned and told the others that the cat was lying. The lion was shocked that the cat would lie, so he also went to look. But when he came back, he said there was a lion in the hole.
The animals were now quite confused (困惑的). One by one, they all went to look at the picture. None of them saw it, and each said they saw a completely different animal instead.

Passage 7
People know animals have feelings, but can we understand them? In order to find out, scientists studied dogs’ tails (尾巴). ________ It says that humans can tell if a dog is happy or sad by watching its tail.
First of all, the researchers showed dogs different things. Sometimes they gave the dogs their favorite toys or food. Sometimes there was nothing. When dogs saw something they liked, they wagged (摇动) their tails fast and high. When there was nothing, their tails moved slowly and low. During the whole process, the scientists used a camera to record these movements.
Then the researchers showed 10 videos of dog tail movements to 100 volunteers. Half of the videos showed happy tails, and the other half showed sad tails. About 70% of the volunteers correctly guessed the dogs’ true feelings, although some of them had never kept a dog before.
The result shows humans can naturally understand dogs’ feelings through their tails. Scientists hope that the study will help people take better care of pets. Now, some are working on a special machine (机器) to detect dogs’ feelings automatically. This could make dogs’ lives happier.

A recent survey (调查) was carried out among young Chinese people. It shows that young Chinese are less good at expressing thoughts and ideas. Half of those young people said they had poor verbal skills (口头表达能力). And 40% of them said they had trouble expressing themselves well in writing.
Poor education could be a reason for poor communication skills, but that may not explain everything. Of the 1,333 young people, most were well-educated. The problem more likely came from the rise of digital (数字的) communication, with texting instead of talking, and short messages instead of long, complete sentences.
Today, having trouble expressing thoughts and ideas is a global problem. In America, some people try to work out the problem by returning to so-called “Classical Education”. This kind of education took place 500 years ago in Europe. They learn grammar, rhetoric, and logic. Grammar meant learning how to write a complete and correct sentence. Rhetoric was the use of grammatical devices (语法手段) to make one’s writing better. And logic was the use of reason (理性) to identify what is true or not true.
If you want to improve your communication skills, ▲ . You can talk with others about books, the latest news, or even hobbies in this group. You can also get a beautiful diary and write down your thoughts in it every day. This will help you have a clearer mind so that you can express your ideas and feelings more clearly.

B.According to the passage, the rise of digital communication is the only reason for young people’s poor expression skills.
C.In Classical Education, students learn grammar, rhetoric, and logic to improve their ability to express ideas clearly.
D.Keeping a diary every day is the only way to improve communication skills.
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Bad Communication B.Learn to Read and Write C.Digital Communication D.Express Yourself Better
Passage 10
Even though the world has made great efforts to protect African elephants, many of them are still being killed for their ivory. At the end of the 1970s, over 1.3 ivory million elephants walked around Africa. But today, their numbers have fallen to around 450, 000. This is mainly caused by illegal (非法的) hunting for ivory. Need for ivory in markets, especially in Asia and Africa, continues to push the illegal trade (贸易). This has resulted in the deaths of at least 20, 000 African elephants each year.
Ivory, also known as “white gold”, has long been regarded as precious. Because of its unusual look, people often use it to make expensive things, such as jewellery, musical instruments and art. And the ivory material itself can stand the test of time. That’s why many people are willing to pay high prices for ivory products.
However, no matter how much real ivory is sold for, it’s certainly not worth the harm to elephants. So some scientists are working hard on creating the same beauty of ivory with no killing.
Thaddäa Rath and her team at the University of Vienna have created the man-made ivory called “Digory”. It is made from synthetic resin (合成树脂) and calcium phosphate particles (磷酸钙颗粒). First, they use a 3D printer to make the shape. Then they color-match and stain (着色) it. Finally, they polish (抛光) it to make it look like real natural ivory. Although the chemical structure of Digory is completely different from that of the natural ivory, it looks so real that it is hard to tell the difference by eye.
Fritz Vollrath, a biologist from the UK, felt excited about the invention for the fact that Digory could save many elephants from risks. He said, “We hope that, by doing more research, Digory will soon be accepted and used worldwide. And I believe that technology like this will play an important role in wildlife protection.”
1.Why does the writer list some numbers in Paragraph 1?
