There is no failure except in no longer trying. It was my brother John, a theater king, who insisted I try out for the musical. “It’s fun,” he said. “You just need to smile and act confidently.” Though I could do both, facing fifty people remained terrifying.

I picked the song Goodbye to remember my mom. I trained my breathing, focused on emotions and adjusted my posture. I sang again and again. But when the audition day (试唱选拔日) came, seeing the choir director on the stage, I felt my heart nearly stopped. Everyone there all sang with such ease, so relaxed and calm. I held my sheet music tightly, watching until only a few of us remained.
Then I stood and walked out. John caught me trembling in the hallway. “I can’t do this,” I announced, tears already coming out of my eyes.

“Stay right here! Sing for me!” John told me. I shook my head violently. But he looked at me calmly. “If you don’t sing well, I’ll tell you. But if you quit today, you’ll regret it in the future. Everyone up there is nervous. But you can do this. Now, practice. Pretend I am the choir director.” I nodded slowly.
We both knew I was too shy to open my heart after our mom passed away. John crossed his arms, and said quietly, “You’ve got our mom’s voice.” My breath caught—Mom’s lullabies (摇篮曲) had died with her five years ago. “Now sing like she’s listening,” he said. The first note cracked and he instantly demanded I restart. My second attempt trembled less. He nodded, “Better. Now it’s time to get back there.”

When we reentered the auditorium (礼堂), the director glanced at her watch. “Ten minutes left.” My sheet music shook as I approached the stage. I looked back, absolutely terrified, but my brother caught my eye and winked. I wasn’t as afraid then.

With my legs shaking slightly (双腿微微发抖), I tried to recall the countless hours of practice and my mom’s gentle face. Taking a deep breath, I started to sing. At first, my voice was a bit unsteady, but as I got into the rhythm of the song, memories of Mom flooded my mind (回忆如潮水般涌来). I poured all my emotions into the performance (将全部情感倾注到表演中). When the last note faded away (消失), the director nodded with approval (赞许地点点头). I left the stage, feeling a mix of relief and excitement (心中满是释然和激动).

The next day, I checked the list on the door of the auditorium and found my name on it. ____________________________________________________________

I couldn’t believe my eyes and rushed to tell John the good news. He hugged me tightly and said, “I knew you could do it!” This experience not only gave me the chance to be in the musical but also taught me that I shouldn’t let fear hold me back (拦阻;阻挡). From then on, I became more confident and willing to face challenges, always remembering that as long as I keep trying, I can overcome any difficulty (自那以后,我愈发自信,勇于直面挑战,始终铭记:只要坚持尝试,便能战胜任何困难).
