I'm sharing an embarrassing personal experience that taught me one of the most important lessons of my career. My first company was an online marketplace connecting small independent artists and makers with customers age twenty two with my shiny new business degree in hand, I thought time you at all. But I had much to learn about people management. I was good at choosing the right people. And my small, hardworking team moved mountains during those early days. After a successful first year, I booked a fancy restaurant to celebrate. As we were leaving, I noticed mr. Green, our cleaner, the floor. He wished us a great night, and I realized I had left him out. I simply hadn't considered him a part of the team, but he was. He kept our works space clean. He fixed the ancient printer without complaint. We couldn't do anything without him, so I asked my assistance to contact the restaurant and up data reservation. While I apologized and invited mister Greens to come to my great relief, he generously accepted, telling me to forget IT. But I couldn't, and I never want to. As leaders, we must realize that those working beneath us form the very foundation of our success. Without them, everything falls apart. So do we strengthen that foundation with respect and recognition, or weaken IT with carelessness? The choice is clear. Welcome to the bossy podcast. 根据Services & Facilities部分第二段中的“We offer a reading/study area, four SDZWA — networked computers, and a color printer/copier/scanner. (我们设有阅览/学习区、四台接入圣地亚哥动物园野生动物联盟网络的电脑,以及一台彩色打印/复印/扫描一体机)”以及“Online Resources”部分的具体内容可知,该图书馆既提供实体资源也提供线上研究资源。故选D项。 【22题详解】细节理解题。根据Services & Facilities部分第二段中的“Scholars requesting access to our specialized collection may email library@sdzwa.org with a brief description of their research project. (需要查阅本馆特藏文献的学者可发送电子邮件至library@sdzwa.org,并附上自身研究项目的简要说明)”可知,非圣地亚哥动物园野生动物联盟的学者使用特藏文献需要发送概述研究内容的邮件。故选D项。 【23题详解】细节理解题。根据Online Resources部分中的“SDZWA History Time Line: Explore San Diego Zoo and Safari Park history. 根据第二段中的“The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.(导致我崩溃的最后一个catalyst是地区红十字会青年理事会意外的拒绝。作为我校分会的副会长,我从未想过这种可能性。红十字会是我的热爱,也是我赖以区别于其他申请者的优势。这次拒绝让我的未来变得暗淡,我像一根被拉过极限的橡皮筋一样崩溃了。)”可知,红十字会的拒绝是让作者最终崩溃的又一个因素,故“catalyst”意为“原因,诱因”,与“Cause”含义相近。故选D项。 25.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.”(然后她深情地看着我说:“但最重要的,百分之百的,是你的心理健康。”)”以及第四段中的“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued.(“没有什么比你的健康更重要,”她继续说道。)” 故选A项。 26. 根据第二段中的“This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.(这次拒绝让我的未来变得暗淡,我像一根被拉过极限的橡皮筋一样崩溃了。)”以及第五段中的“Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.(她的见解让我如释重负。 根据最后一段中的“Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms.(虽然我的日常没有改变——努力学习、追求卓越——但我的观念已经永远改变了。 我仍然在reaching for the moon,但我不再害怕了。 A 29. C 30. C 31. 根据文章第一段“Imagine sitting in a dark movie theater wondering just how much soda is left in your oversized cup. Rather than pulling off the cap and looking, you pick up and shake the cup a bit to hear how much ice is inside, giving you a decent indication of if you’ll need to get a free refill. Setting the drink back down, you wonder absent-mindedly if the armrest is made of real wood. After giving it a few knocks and hearing an empty sound, you decide it must be made from plastic. 故选A。 根据文章第二段“This ability to interpret the world through sound vibrations (振动) coming from an object is what researchers are just about to give to robots to boost their rapidly growing set of sensing abilities. (研究人员正计划赋予机器人通过物体发出的声音振动来解读世界的能力,以增强它们日益增长的感知能力)”以及第四段 “SonicSense features a robotic hand with four fingers, each equipped with a contact microphone placed in the fingertip. These sensors detect and record vibrations generated when the robot grasps or shakes an object. 由文章第五段中“If it’s an object the system has never seen before, it might take 20 different interactions for the system to come to a conclusion. But if it’s an object already in its database, it can correctly identify it in as little as four. 通读全文,尤其是由文章第二段“This ability to interpret the world through sound vibrations (振动) coming from an object is what researchers are just about to give to robots to boost their rapidly growing set of sensing abilities. (研究人员正计划赋予机器人通过物体发出的声音振动来解读世界的能力,以增强它们日益增长的感知能力)”和最后一段中“SonicSense gives robots a new way to hear and feel, much like humans, which can transform how current robots perceive and interact with objects. A 33. A 34. C 35. 根据第一段中“There is a tendency among how-to enthusiasts to talk about creativity as if it had fixed goals: things you know from the start will turn out to be novels or symphonies (交响乐). Writers and musicians who have suffered many failures know this is an unlikely task. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“Scientists call this need the set effect. It finds that a general tendency exists to favour known methods in problem-solving at the expense of alternatives. It is also a good way of describing what can happen when an artistic approach stops producing results. A few years ago, when I finished Murmur, a novel about Alan Turing, I knew I wouldn’t be working that way again. Nevertheless, I tried a second historical fiction. Failed. 故选A项。 根据第四段“So, the side-long view is important. The world of nature also offers similar cases. Insects and some birds rely less on an inbuilt map of the world to locate food than on what they see when they are moving. When a bee flies sideways, generating motion parallax (运动视差), a flower can be clearly located. 根据最后一段“Perhaps, artistic vision is a part of physical seeing, where looking from different angles is more important than staring straight at something. My every nature screamed to panic, to step back into the path of other vehicles. I could feel the rush of the truck as it ran past, a blow of wind and noise that made my heart pound beyond control. But Atlas was an unmovable rock against my legs. He didn’t move an inch, holding me safely in place until the danger had completely passed. The sound of screeching brakes and angry horns faded, leaving only the sound of my ragged breaths and his steady presence. Safely on the sidewalk, I dropped to my knees and threw my arms around Atlas. I buried my face in his fur, no longer able to hold back the tears of relief and gratitude. He wiggled in my embrace, licking my face as if to assure me that everything was alright. He was my savior, my partner. People gathered around, asking if I was Okay, their voices filled with concern. But all I could say, over and over, was “He saved me. My dog saved me.” That day, Atlas didn’t just save me from a physical accident; he finally and completely erased the last shadow of doubt from my heart. 词汇激活 行为类: ①跳动:pound/beat ②聚集:gather/assemble ③确保:assure/ensure 情绪类 ①怀疑:doubt/disbelief ②感激:gratitude/appreciation 【点睛】[高分句型1] I could feel the rush of the truck as it ran past, a blow of wind and noise that made my heart pound beyond control. Today I’m sharing an embarrassing personal experience that taught me one of the most important lessons of my career. My first company was an online marketplace市场 connecting small independent artists and makers with customers. Age twenty two with my shiny new business degree in hand I thought I knew it all but I had much to learn about people management. I was good at choosing the right people and my small hardworking team moved mountains during those early days. After a successful first year I booked a fancy restaurant to celebrate. As we were leaving I noticed Miss Green our cleaner sweeping the floor. He wished us a great night and I realized I had left him out. I simply hadn’t considered him a part of the team but he was. He kept our workspace clean. He fixed the ancient printer without complaint. We couldn’t do anything without him. So I asked my assistant to contact the restaurant and update our reservation while I apologized and invited Mr. Green to come. To my great relief, he generously 慷慨地accepted telling me to forget it. But I couldn’t and I never want to. As leaders we must realize that those working beneath us form the very foundation of our success. Without them everything falls apart崩溃、瓦解, so do we strengthen that foundation with respect and recognition or weaken it with carelessness. The choice is clear. B The unforgiving难应付的;不肯原谅的 demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an overwhelming physics lab. My teacher’s claim that no one would score above90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was intensified加剧 at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity必需品 for a celebrated university. The final catalyst催化剂 for my breakdown崩溃;故障 was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice副的 president of my school’s chapter地方分会, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants申请人. This rejection made my future seem dim暗淡的, and I broke like a rubber band橡皮筋 stretched beyond its limit. I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed牺牲 her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured out my fears. She listened attentively专心地 before drawing a circle on the tablecloth桌布. “This is your time,” she began. “Eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurriculars.” She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.” “Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier flipping快速翻动 hamburgers, so be it.” “没有什么比你的健康更重要了,”她继续说道。“我们希望你有一份好工作,这样你就不会有那么大的压力。如果这条路让你如此不开心,那就不值得了。如果你更喜欢翻汉堡包,那就这样吧。” Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around环绕 your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand床头柜 at night won’t ever break. Though my routine常规 remained the same— studying hard and pursuing excellence优秀— my perspective观点;态度 was forever changed. Writers and musicians who have suffered many failures know this is an unlikely task /ʌnˈlaɪkli tɑːsk/ 不太可能完成的任务. If they have to talk about it, they use artistic vision /ɑːˈtɪstɪk ˈvɪʒn/ 艺术视角 and leave it at that. However, experience tells me that creativity often lies to one side of a declared aim /dɪˈkleəd eɪm/ 公开宣称的目标. Some young writers are attracted by /əˈtræktɪd baɪ/ 被……吸引 the idea that they can identify /aɪˈdentɪfaɪ/ 确定 a model典范 and knock out快速完成 a thriller /ˈθrɪlə(r)/ 惊悚小说. Well, maybe so, but novels can take on 呈现 countless shapes. The problem becomes clear when you start work creatively /kriˈeɪtɪvli/ 创造性地, because the need to believe in坚信 a fixed goal will hold you back阻碍你. Scientists call this need the set effect定势效应. It is also a good way of describing what can happen when an artistic approach艺术手法 stops producing results. A few years ago, when I finished Murmur, a novel about Alan Turing, I knew I wouldn’t be working that way again. Nevertheless, I tried a second historical fiction /hɪˈstɒrɪkl ˈfɪkʃn/ 历史小说. Failed. Meanwhile, I was playing the piano and composing /kəmˈpəʊzɪŋ/ 作曲 on the side, which worked nicely. So, the side-long view间接视角 is important. The world of nature also offers similar cases 例子. Insects and some birds rely less on an inbuilt map内在认知图 of the world to locate /ləʊˈkeɪt/ 定位 food than on what they see when they are moving. When a bee flies sideways /ˈsaɪdweɪz/ 侧向地, generating /ˈdʒenəreɪtɪŋ/ 产生 motion parallax /pærəlæks/ 运动视差, a flower can be clearly located. Perhaps, artistic vision is a part of physical seeing /ˈfɪzɪkl ˈsiːɪŋ/ 直观观察, where looking from different angles /ˈæŋɡlz/ 角度 is more important than staring straight at /ˈsteərɪŋ streɪt æt/ 直视 something. Creative projects and artistic vision come from our inborn response /rɪˈspɒns/ 先天反应 to the world around us. And since the world is always changing, so is our creativity — it’s never fixed or set in stone /set ɪn stəʊn/ 一成不变的. 32.How do writers and musicians view creativity in the first paragraph? A. It has uncertainties /ʌnˈsɜːtntiz/不确定,无把握. B. It is hidden in failures. C. It comes with a fixed goal. D. It is limited to specific fields. 33.What made the author fail in the creation of the fiction? A. Influence of the set effect. B. Lacking historical knowledge. C. Trying a new artistic approach. D. We want to get in shape变得健康有活力 and join a gym, but we soon stop going and end up spending our evenings on the couch长沙发 instead. ____36____ Such goal-pursuit failure目标追求失败 is so common — we make New Year’s resolutions决心, only to admit defeat承认失败 just a few weeks into the new year. ____37____ I found in my own research that people believe time to be a crucial ingredient一个关键要素 in pursuing the most frequently pursued goals, such as working out, or learning a language or instrument乐器. The feeling that we don’t have enough hours has become such an integral必需的,必要的 part of our lives that we almost take it for granted把它视为理所当然 to never feel like we have enough time. New research, however, shows a simple trick that allows us to get back some control and bounce back迅速恢复 from goal-pursuit failure. ____38____ This simple shift in language allows us to feel like how we dealt with our lack of time was a choice, and that we can change our approach in the future and regain motivation重新获得动力. In a study with 300 online participants, Luis Abreu discovered those instructed指示;教育 to speak about a goal-pursuit failure in terms of就……而言 not having made the time were more motivated to get back on track重新回到正轨 with their goal. ____39____ This interesting effect occurs because people feel more in control of their time when they talk about making the time, or even not making the time腾出时间. How we speak can have a powerful effect not only on others, but even on ourselves. When we fail at something, it’s up to us这取决于我们 to tell ourselves a story about what happened, and how we can do better in the future. ____40____ We can thereby因此 find the motivation to make time to pursue our important goals. A. Learning to manage our time effectively is the key to pursuing goals. B. One way to help is to talk about time in a way that makes us its active managers. C. This benefit was even sustained持续的,持久的, as people reported stronger resolve决心 a week later. D. Hence因此, we must learn to prioritize优先考虑(处理) our goals more effectively over other activities. E. One of the most common reasons behind our failure to attain goals实现目标 is lack of time. F. Or we buy ingredients佐料,原料 to cook better food, only to go back to our take-out供应外卖食物的 habits soon. G. B The unforgiving demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an overwhelming physics lab. My teacher’s claim that no one would score above90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a celebrated university. The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit. I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. If you’re happier flipping hamburgers, so be it.” Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break. Though my routine remained the same— studying hard and pursuing excellence— my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms. 24.What does the underlined word “catalyst” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Foundation. B.Solution. C.Symbol. D.Cause. 25.What does the author’s mother attach most importance to? A.The author’s overall wellbeing. B.The sacrifice for her daughter. C.The relief of the author’s stress. D.The author’s devotion to schoolwork. 26.What does the use of the “rubber band” try to illustrate? A.A conflict with her father about goals. B.A bond between the author and her mother. C.A shift in the author’s outlook on pressure. D.A link to the author’s academic performance. 27.What does the author mean by saying “reaching for the moon”? A.She will be unbeatable. B.She will continue to aim high. C.She has achieved all her goals. D.She has a passion for astronomy. C Imagine sitting in a dark movie theater wondering just how much soda is left in your oversized cup. This ability to interpret the world through sound vibrations (振动) coming from an object is what researchers are just about to give to robots to boost their rapidly growing set of sensing abilities. Set to be published at the Conference on Robot Learning in Munich, Germany, new research from Duke University details a system entitled SonicSense that allows robots to interact with their surroundings in ways previously limited to humans. SonicSense features a robotic hand with four fingers, each equipped with a contact microphone placed in the fingertip. These sensors detect and record vibrations generated when the robot grasps or shakes an object. While SonicSense is not the first attempt to use this approach, it goes further and performs better than previous work by using touch-based microphones that tune out noise and advanced AI techniques. Based on the interactions and detected signals, SonicSense extracts frequency features and uses its previous knowledge, paired with AI, to figure out what material the object is made out of. If it’s an object the system has never seen before, it might take 20 different interactions for the system to come to a conclusion. But if it’s an object already in its database, it can correctly identify it in as little as four. SonicSense gives robots a new way to hear and feel, much like humans, which can transform how current robots perceive and interact with objects. While vision is essential, sound adds layers of information that can reveal things the eye might miss. 28. What does the author stress in the first paragraph? A. How people perceive the environment. B. When moviegoers make rough estimates. C. What function vision performs in darkness. D. Whether people should trust initial judgments. 29. How does SonicSense make robots different? A. It generates hand movements by vibration. B. It enables robots to interact with humans. C. It employs sound to interpret the world. D. It integrates diverse visual feedback. 30. Which of the following best describes SonicSense’s object recognition? A. Safety-centered. B. Multi-tasked. C. Adaptable. D. Sustainable. 31. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Technology Equips Robots with Better Vision B. Listening Skills Give Robots Human-like Touch C. Eyes on SonicSense: the Customizable Wonder D. Sounds Great: Robots with an Expressive Voice D There is a tendency among how-to enthusiasts to talk about creativity as if it had fixed goals: things you know from the start will turn out to be novels or symphonies (交响乐). Writers and musicians who have suffered many failures know this is an unlikely task. If they have to talk about it, they use “artistic vision” and leave it at that. However, experience tells me that creativity often lies to one side of a declared aim. Some young writers are attracted by the idea that they can identify a model and knock out a thriller. Well, maybe so, but novels can take on countless shapes. The problem becomes clear when you start work creatively, because the need to believe in a fixed goal will hold you back. Scientists call this need the set effect. Failed. Meanwhile, I was playing the piano and composing on the side, which worked nicely. So, the side-long view is important. The world of nature also offers similar cases. Insects and some birds rely less on an inbuilt map of the world to locate food than on what they see when they are moving. When a bee flies sideways, generating motion parallax (运动视差), a flower can be clearly located. Perhaps, artistic vision is a part of physical seeing, where looking from different angles is more important than staring straight at something. Creative projects and artistic vision come from our inborn response to the world around us. And since the world is always changing, so is our creativity — it’s never fixed or set in stone. 32. How do writers and musicians view creativity in the first paragraph? A. It has uncertainties. B. It is hidden in failures. C. It comes with a fixed goal. D. It is limited to specific fields. 33. What made the author fail in the creation of the fiction? A. Influence of the set effect. B. Lacking historical knowledge. C. Trying a new artistic approach. D. Distraction from playing the piano. 34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Explanation of the set effect. B. Deep research into insect life. C. Supporting evidence in nature. D. Doubts on insects’ inborn abilities. 35. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph? A. Staying flexible. B. Living to the fullest. C. Keeping exploring. D. Holding on to your goal. (E=AB, F=AC, G=AD) Many of us have, at times, failed to pursue a goal. We want to get in shape and join a gym, but we soon stop going and end up spending our evenings on the couch instead. ____36____ Such goal-pursuit failure is so common — we make New Year’s resolutions, only to admit defeat just a few weeks into the new year. ____37____ I found in my own research that people believe time to be a crucial ingredient in pursuing the most frequently pursued goals, such as working out, or learning a language or instrument. The feeling that we don’t have enough hours has become such an integral part of our lives that we almost take it for granted to never feel like we have enough time. New research, however, shows a simple trick that allows us to get back some control and bounce back from goal-pursuit failure. ____38____ This simple shift in language allows us to feel like how we dealt with our lack of time was a choice, and that we can change our approach in the future and regain motivation. In a study with 300 online participants, Luis Abreu discovered those instructed to speak about a goal-pursuit failure in terms of not having made the time were more motivated to get back on track with their goal. ____39____ This interesting effect occurs because people feel more in control of their time when they talk about making the time, or even not making the time. How we speak can have a powerful effect not only on others, but even on ourselves. When we fail at something, it’s up to us to tell ourselves a story about what happened, and how we can do better in the future. ____40____ We can thereby find the motivation to make time to pursue our important goals. A. Learning to manage our time effectively is the key to pursuing goals. B. One way to help is to talk about time in a way that makes us its active managers. C. This benefit was even sustained, as people reported stronger resolve a week later. D. Hence, we must learn to prioritize our goals more effectively over other activities. E. One of the most common reasons behind our failure to attain goals is lack of time. F. Or we buy ingredients to cook better food, only to go back to our take-out habits soon. G. Instead of saying that we didn’t have the time, we can say that we didn’t make the time. Megs Yunn, the founder of Beverly’s Birthdays in Pennsylvania, was ____41____ for what she did with a $10,000 donation from a local university. After losing most of my sight in my twenties, I had escaped into a shell of caution and fear. The busy city streets, once familiar, became sort of terrifying barriers. My white walking stick was a tool, but it felt like a symbol of my limitations. So although I was once outgoing and playful, I chose to be at home more to avoid the special eyes. My parents were afraid of my situation and they tried ways to help me out. Atlas, a kind of dog with high intelligence, gentle eyes, was supposed to be a practical solution. But from the moment his harness (狗绳) was fitted into my hand, I knew he was more than that. For weeks, we trained together. He learned to cooperate with me, making me understand various clues to avoid low-hanging branches, stop dead at the top of subway stairs... I learned to trust him — to hide my fear in his capable guidance. It wasn’t easy. The instinct (本能) to shy away at every sound, to tighten the harness in anticipation of danger, was a constant battle. But with each successful journey, my confidence grew. Atlas wasn’t just leading me; he was pulling me back into the stream of life. One afternoon, we were on our usual route home from the park. The air was gentle and pleasant, and I was feeling unusually relaxed, chatting to Atlas as we walked. We were approaching a major intersection we had crossed dozens of times. The traffic light switched, signaling the “walk” signal. Atlas started forward, as he always did. But midway across, he suddenly froze, his body blocking mine. A second later, I heard the terrifying sound of an engine speeding up — a truck had run the red light. In that heart-stopping moment, everything I had learned about trust was put to the extreme test. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Safely on the sidewalk, I dropped to my knees and threw my arms around Atlas. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
