I never truly understood the meaning of “peer pressure” until I joined the cross-country team in my freshman year. The training was ____16____ than I had imagined. Every morning, we were expected to ____17____ for training before the sun was up. Seeing all the other runners, so fast and skilled, made me feel embarrassed and ____18____. I started to doubt my own ability to ____19____.
One rainy morning, I was particularly ____20____. My legs felt heavy, and I was falling far behind the rest. The thought of just stopping and going home felt like a better ____21____. Just then, our coach, Mr. Evans, jogged up beside me. “Stop looking at them,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “You’re not running their race. You need to find your own ____22____.”
His words were simple, but they struck me. I had been so focused on ____23____ myself to others that I had forgotten why I started running in the first place. In group projects or when studying for exams, I learned to work in my own ____29____, without being ____30____ by what others were achieving.
Now, whenever I see a teammate struggling with ____31____, I share Mr. Evans’s advice. But true success comes from following your own path. This experience taught me an important life lesson: your journey is ____32____. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions ____33____ your own inner voice. Life isn’t about ____34____ against everyone else; it’s about winning against who you were yesterday — finding joy in small steps forward, and pride in how far you’ve come. Many years ago, my mother used to read Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey to me during cold winter nights. I remember it clearly, as if it were yesterday, listening to her voice beside me. That experience had a deep and lasting effect on me.
Before I could read on my own, my mother introduced me to the beauty and power of language through this story about a girl and her mother spending time in nature with a mother bear and her cub. The combination of the interesting story, beautiful language, and my mother’s presence created a special experience that happened many times. These read-aloud sessions played a key role in making me a reader.
Years later, while reading a picture book to a young student in class, I saw how reading aloud could also impact others. The boy had faced many challenges in his life — growing up in poverty and often feeling lonely. However, during that shared reading moment, he felt such happiness that he came up with a meaningful idea.
He said, “Mrs. Allyn, we should make sure everyone knows how wonderful this feels. Let’s create a special day for reading aloud.” Inspired by his suggestion, my organization, LitWorld, established World Read Aloud Day in 2024 as a people-powered movement to make his wish come true — that everyone could experience the joy of being read to.
Since then, World Read Aloud Day has become a global event that reaches over one million people in more than 65 countries. Today, it is celebrated in over 600 cities, and this number keeps growing.
Children who develop reading habits become active and informed global citizens. Every child deserves the right to read. While saying that reading aloud can change the world might sound simple, that’s actually what makes it so valuable. Sharing stories with children is straightforward, affordable, and easy to do, yet its impact can be enormous.
41. How did the author probably feel when her mother read Blueberries for Sal to her?
A. Bored. B. Scared. C. Calm. D. Thrilled.
42. What challenges did the boy have in his life when the author read a picture book to him?

B. Growing up in poverty and often feeling lonely.
C. Growing up in poverty but feeling happy all the time.
D. Growing up in a rich family and having many friends.
43. What does the word “sessions” in paragraph 2 most closely mean?
A. Contests. B. Gatherings. C. Rejections. D. Footsteps.
44. What is the author’s opinion about reading aloud?
A. It’s a complicated activity. B. It can have a huge positive influence.
C. It’s only beneficial to children in rich countries. D. It’s difficult to popularize globally.
45. Which title best sums up the passage?
A. From a Childhood Memory to a Global Festival B. The Benefits of Reading Aloud to Kids
C. A Poor Student’s Dream of Reading D. How LitWorld Changed the World of Reading

Scientists at Tel Aviv University have conducted a six-year study, proving that plants produce a noise in certain stressful situations. The plants make a high frequency clicking sound which cannot be heard by humans, and when they are lacking water, or being damaged, the clicks become far more regular. The plants could make various sounds, depending on whether they are thirsty or injured.
For the scientists’ research, some plants were placed in a soundproof box and recorded by two microphones. Some plants were badly in need of water, others were cut, and a control group was left undamaged. The researchers used AI technology to separate the noises. Being able to identify the particular calls of the plants up to 3-5 metres away, the technology successfully discriminated between the sounds made depending on whether the plants were dry or cut.
While farming has become a science itself, there’re still a lot of estimates involved. If farmers were able to receive accurate information directly from their crops, they could adopt a much more efficient method of care and also be able to better identify and control diseases in a crop. All this can be achieved by using microphones and sensors to translate this new information.
On average, the human ear can hear sounds up to around 20 kHz, whereas the sounds produced by plants are in the 40-80 kHz region, far beyond our hearing capabilities. However, the sounds produced by plants can probably be heard by various animals. Though this has yet to be proven, these creatures may use this information for their benefit, choosing which plants to eat, for example.
Furthermore, a study in 2014, led by Reda Hassanien of China Agricultural University in Beijing, proved that plants reacted to sound waves, with some plants significantly increasing their yield. While it’s still unknown if one plant could react to another’s noises, it seems likely. Indeed, the same research facility is now ready to test this assumption.
46. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “discriminated” in Paragraph 2?
A. Balanced. B. Compared.
C. Distinguished. D. Captured.
47. What benefit may farmers get from this research?
A. Managing their crops purposefully and effectively.
B. Protecting their crops against diseases directly.
C. Adding to the variety of crops to some extent.
D. Saving their time on farming significantly.
48. What is now sure about the sounds produced by plants according to the researchers?
A. They improve the crop production.
B. They go beyond humans’ hearing range.
C. They assist animals in searching for food.
D. They help plants communicate with each other.
49. What may future research focus on?
A. Whether plants can react to each other’s sounds.
B. Whether creatures can react to sound waves.
C. How to judge the types of plants by sound.
D. How plants communicate with another’s noises.
50. The writer wrote the passage to tell us .
A. plants may help increase yield in farming by sound
B. plants can communicate like humans by various sounds
C. plants repeat the identical sound in the face of danger
D. plants can produce diverse sounds in difficult situations

A serious problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.
First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may softer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.
Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.
To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.
51. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The problems faced by the old in society.
B. Why we should take responsibility for the old.
C. How we can improve the lives of the old.
D. Where the old can go to get their pensions.
52. According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?
A. Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.
B. Increase savings levels of people during their working years.
C. Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old.
D. Make available pensions for those who have retired.
53. The underlined word “viable” most probably means “ ”.
A. impossible B. practical
C. useful D. successful
54. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money.
B. Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age.
C. Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people.
D. There is no single solution to the problems of the old.
55. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this article?
A. To point out the need for government supped for old people.
B. To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people.
C. To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem.
D. To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.

When I first arrived in Canada at the age of 16 to go to High School for one year and live with a host family, I was completely over the moon with everything! When the plane finally touched down in Toronto, I was so excited and delighted that I was finally in Canada, something we had been planning for many months.
However, as with the majority of exchange students, I met with the common culture shock (文化冲击) and I was glad I got through it in the end! Here is what has helped me deal better with the culture shock.
Firstly, try to really put yourself out there and make friends! Talk, even when you make mistakes! Develop a routine! Think about how you dealt with stress at home and apply it in the new culture: Yoga, sports, going for a walk, or talking to a dear friend.
Secondly, try to see the good side in everything. Negative thinking is a vicious circle (恶性循环) and can quickly pull you down. Learn to laugh at yourself, as well as at whatever is discouraging you — humour helps you make light of a situation. Always remember to ask yourself: What can I learn from this?
Thirdly, try to acknowledge (承认) the positive aspects of other cultures. It doesn’t mean you have to give up all you have learnt or believed in! It simply widens your horizons (眼界) and helps you communicate between different cultures.
I am still in touch with my host family that I stayed with ten years ago! They have been a great role model to me and helped me a lot. I’m very grateful for their friendship and generosity while I went through culture shock.

Hi everyone! I’m Li Jin from Chenguang Middle School. One self-improvement plan I’ve stuck to for the longest time is English reading, which I believe is a great way to broaden my horizons.
Every day after school, I spend 30 minutes reading English articles, ranging from news to stories. I also keep a vocabulary notebook where I put down new words and review them regularly. What’s more, I join an online English reading group where we discuss what we’ve read.
This plan has brought me many benefits. I’ve not only improved my reading comprehension but also enriched my vocabulary. What I’ve learned is that persistence is key to self-improvement. As long as we keep going, we’ll surely make progress.
