(25-26高二下·山东聊城·期末·★★★)You enter the kitchen to grab something off the counter, only to find halfway there that the thought has suddenly disappeared. Backtracking to the living room brings it rushing back. Your brain isn’t broken. In fact, you’ve just experienced what psychologists call the doorway effect, a common and well-documented cognitive hiccup
Gabriel Radvansky, a psychology professor at the University of Notre Dame, who has spent years investigating how physical movement affects memory, uncovers the underlying mechanism: the brain organizes experience into separate episodes called event models. Each room, each distinct context represents a separate episode with doorways serving as “event boundaries” that signal transitions between episodes. When you cross a doorway, the brain files the previous episode of activity away and begins building a new one. As a result, the intention you formed in the original room becomes buried under newly activated contextual information.
In controlled experiments, Radvansky found that participants were two to three times more likely to forget their intended task after crossing a doorway than after travelling the same distance within a single room. “Recalling the decision or activity made in a different room is difficult because it has been filed and covered up,” he explained. “Retracing your steps works because it reinstates the original episode and brings back the buried intention to the surface.”
Jeffrey Zacks, a psychologist at Washington University has described the significance of Radvansky’s work precisely. Scientists once believed time was the primary factor in memory access and later research showed it was the amount of new information arriving over time, he noted. The doorway studies added a third dimension, the structure of experience itself, adjusting access to the immediately relevant memories accordingly.
For everyday purposes, forming a clear, specific intention before crossing a doorway rather than relying on surrounding memory, reduces the chance of losing it at the boundary. Writing it down achieves the same effect as it moves the intention into an external record that location-updating process can’t touch. And recognize that walking into a room and forgetting why, which becomes more frequent under stress, tiredness or high cognitive load, is a normal feature of how your brain manages episodic transitions, a trade-off between efficiency and immediate access, not a malfunction.
1.What do we know about event models from the passage?

3.What is the significance of Radvansky’s studies according to Zacks?
A.Confirming the role of information. B.Offering new memory perspectives.

C.Externalizing the specific intention. D.Embracing the declining memory.
Illeism: The Ancient Trick to Help You Think More Wisely
As a writer specialising in psychology, I’ve come across hundreds of evidence-based tips for better thinking. Few have proven as useful to me as the ancient strategy of illeism.
Put simply, illeism is the practice of talking about oneself in the third person rather than the first person. 5 In the emperor Julius Caesar’s account of the Gallic War, for example, he wrote “Caesar avenged the public” rather than “I avenged the public”.
To the modern ear, illeism can sound a little silly or self-important. 6 If we are trying to make a difficult decision, speaking about ourselves in the third person can help to reduce the emotions that could lead our thinking off track, allowing us to find a wiser solution to our problem.
7 This is because when making personal choices, we become too caught up in our emotions, which cloud our thinking and prevent us from putting our issues in perspective. If we have received negative feedback from a colleague, for example, our feeling of embarrassment might lead us to become overly self-defensive.
By switching to the third person, our descriptions of the situation will start to sound as if we are talking about someone else rather than ourselves. 8 By encouraging us to put our problems in perspective, the use of illeism may also help us to have a more balanced response to daily stresses.
Next time you face a challenging situation, try referring to yourself as “he” or “she” instead of “I”. 9
A.Try this technique.
B.Politicians often use this method.
C.This creates helpful distance from emotions.
D.So why do emotions affect our decisions so much?
E.Yet research shows illeism brings real thinking benefits.
F.However, lack of objectivity can be problematic when choosing.
G.You might be surprised at how much clearer your thinking becomes.

Each room, each distinct context represents a separate episode with doorways serving as “event boundaries” that signal transitions between episodes.
Each room, each distinct context represents a separate episode ② with doorways serving as...
And recognize that walking into a room and forgetting why, which becomes more frequent under stress, tiredness or high cognitive load, is a normal feature of how your brain manages episodic transitions, a trade-off between efficiency and immediate access, not a malfunction.
② that 引导宾语从句,主干为 walking into a room and forgetting why is a normal feature ③ which 引导非限制性定语从句,补充说明这种现象的发生频率 ④ a trade-off...
解题需定位原文「each distinct context represents a separate episode」,对应 D 选项「与特定环境相关」。
What can we learn about the doorway effect from the last paragraph? A. It is a sign of declining memory ability. B. It happens more often when people are relaxed. C. It is an unavoidable bug in brain structure. D. It is a by-product of the brain’s efficient work.

同类词还有 weigh(重量为……)、sell(卖得……)。
The fire lasted three hours, ________ (destroy) most of the building.
The temple, ________ (build) in the Ming Dynasty, is well preserved.
The new bridge ________ (complete) last year has greatly improved local traffic.
The lake ________ (measure) 200 meters across.
1. destroying 2. built 3. completed 4. measures
Dear Chris, I’m sorry to hear you’re troubled by forgetting things when entering a new room. Actually, it’s the “doorway effect”, a common cognitive phenomenon rather than a sign of memory decline. Here are two tips for you. First, form a clear and specific intention before you walk into another room. Second, write down your plan on a note, which won’t be affected by the brain’s scene updating. I hope you’ll find the advice helpful. Yours, Li Hua
Lessons from Jigsaw Puzzles
Jigsaw puzzles are not just a simple pastime; they also teach us valuable life lessons. First, doing puzzles trains our patience and willpower. When we can’t find the right piece for a long time, taking a break and coming back with a clear mind often works. Second, it teaches us to focus on details while keeping the whole picture in mind. Most importantly, the process of searching for the perfect fit mirrors our journey of solving life’s challenges. Small as it is, jigsaw puzzle helps us grow and prepares us for any difficulty ahead.
Our brain is designed for efficiency, not perfect memory, and small cognitive hiccups are just trade-offs for faster thinking.
What seems like just a simple game can actually become a mirror of life, showing us the power of patience and persistence.
Every unearthed cultural relic is a silent messenger from history, offering us a glimpse of the wisdom of ancient times.

Passage 1
Have you ever walked into a store and seen a dress marked 300 yuan, then felt like 180 yuan is a great bargain after bargaining? Or have you ever guessed your exam score based on your first answer, and found it hard to change that guess later? This common mental trap is called the anchoring effect: people tend to rely too heavily on the first piece of information they receive (the “anchor”) when making judgments, and all later decisions are adjusted around that starting point.
This effect was first discovered by psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. In one classic experiment, they asked participants to spin a wheel that stopped on a random number between 0 and 100, and then asked them to guess the percentage of African countries in the United Nations. People who saw a higher number on the wheel gave much higher guesses, while those who saw a lower number gave lower ones. Even though the wheel number had nothing to do with the question, it still influenced their judgment.
The anchoring effect appears everywhere in daily life. For students, the first score you get in a new subject often skews your expectation of your future performance. For shoppers, the first price a seller names sets a baseline for the whole negotiation. Even experienced teachers can be influenced by a student’s first impression when grading papers.
While the anchoring effect is hard to completely avoid, there are ways to reduce its influence. First, never make a quick decision based on only one piece of information — collect more data and compare different options. Second, try to think from the opposite side: if the first “anchor” was different, would you still make the same choice? By realizing the existence of this bias, you can make more rational judgments.
1.What do we know about the anchoring effect from Paragraph 1?
A. It only happens in shopping and exam scenes.
B. It means relying on initial information to make judgments.
C. It helps people make wiser and faster decisions.
D. It is a rare cognitive bias among teenagers.
2.What does the underlined word “skews” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Improves. B. Distorts. C. Reflects. D. Confirms.
3.What is suggested to reduce the influence of the anchoring effect?
A. Sticking to your first judgment firmly.
B. Accepting the starting price directly.
C. Gathering more information before deciding.
D. Trusting your first impression completely.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A. Practical skills for better bargaining. B. A common cognitive bias and its influence.
C. Methods to improve exam scores. D. The importance of rational thinking.
Passage 2
Have you ever found that you can clearly remember a difficult question you didn’t work out in an exam, but quickly forget the ones you finished? Or that you keep thinking about an unfinished TV show, but lose interest right after you finish the final episode? This is the Zeigarnik effect: unfinished or interrupted tasks are remembered much better than completed ones.
This effect was named after Bluma Zeigarnik, a Russian psychologist. In the 1920s, she noticed a strange thing in a restaurant: waiters could remember all the details of unpaid bills clearly, but as soon as customers paid the bill, the waiters almost completely forgot the order. To test this idea, she did an experiment: she gave participants a series of simple tasks and told them to finish half, but interrupted them before they could finish the other half. When asked to recall the tasks later, most people remembered the unfinished ones twice as well as the finished ones.
Why does this happen? Psychologists explain that when we start a task, our brain creates a state of tension that keeps our attention focused. As long as the task is unfinished, the tension stays, and the information stays clear in our memory. Once the task is completed, the tension is released, and the memory gradually fades away.
For students, this effect can be both helpful and tricky. On the bright side, you can use it to fight procrastination: just start with a small part of your homework, and the feeling of “unfinishedness” will push you to keep going. On the other hand, constantly thinking about unfinished tasks can cause anxiety. The solution is simple: write down all your to-do items and make a clear plan. This way, your brain can stop worrying about unfinished tasks and focus on what you are doing now.
5. Why does the author mention the exam and TV show experiences in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of the Zeigarnik effect. B. To show the harm of unfinished tasks.
C. To stress the importance of reviewing lessons. D. To compare different memory patterns.
6.What can we learn about Bluma Zeigarnik’s experiment?
A. It was carried out in a school classroom. B. It proved that finished tasks are easier to remember.
C. It was designed to test waiters’ memory ability. D. It found interrupted tasks leave deeper memory.
7.What does the underlined word “tension” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Relaxation. B. Pressure. C. Pleasure. D. Doubt.
8.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. How to apply the Zeigarnik effect to study. B. The disadvantages of the Zeigarnik effect.
C. The reasons why students put off homework. D. Ways to keep focused while studying.
How to Use Cognitive Rules to Improve Your Learning
Have you ever wondered why some students spend less time studying but remember more? The secret lies in understanding how your brain works. 9 Here are four practical methods based on cognitive science.
First, use spaced repetition. Many students are used to cramming all knowledge in one night before exams, but this only works for short-term memory. 10 Reviewing knowledge at certain intervals, like one day, one week and one month after learning, helps move information into your long-term memory.
Second, try active recall. A lot of students think reading notes over and over again is an effective way to study. 11 Closing your book and trying to recall what you’ve just learned, or doing quick self-tests, is much more helpful for strengthening memory.
Third, explain knowledge to others. It’s easy to think you’ve understood a concept just by reading it.
12 If you can teach a difficult point to a classmate in simple words, it means you have truly mastered it. This method also helps you find the parts you don’t fully understand.
13 Many students like to do homework while scrolling through social media, believing they can handle both things at once. But as we’ve learned, true multitasking doesn’t exist. Switching between tasks wastes your brain energy and reduces your learning efficiency. Focusing on one task at a time is always the best choice.
A. But this is actually a very inefficient way.
B. If you can teach a concept clearly, you truly understand it.
C. Finally, stay away from multitasking when you study.
D. By mastering basic cognitive rules, you can learn smarter, not harder.
E. It is also helpful to stay up late to go over lessons before exams.
F. Instead, spaced review works much better for long-term memory.
G. However, you can test your understanding by explaining it to someone else.
