Like many 19-year-olds across the US,Zach Yadegari spent last summer preparing for
college.Instead of an ordinary freshman,he's also the co-founder and CEO of a fast-
growing mobile app called Cal AI.
Yadegari launched the app in May 2024.The idea is simple:Users take a photo of
their food, and the app's AI system estimates the meal's calorie count. The app is free to
download, with an optional subscription for extra features.
Yadegari says he has loved technology since childhood. His interest began when he
was seven years old, after attending a summer camp where he learned to code. After that,
he spent hours watching online lessons and practicing programming.
The idea for Cal AI came from his own daily life.Yadegari had started exercising and
wanted to track his calories, but most apps required users to type in every food item
manually."It felt really tedious,"he said.Discussing the problem with several friends,he
decided to build an AI system that could analyze photos of food and do most of the work
automatically.
Since its establishment,Cal AI has grown quickly. The team now has about 30
employees, and the app earns around $274,000 in monthly operating income.Today,
Yadegari is also a student at the University of Miami's business school.Balancing
schoolwork with running a company can be challenging.Still,he believes entrepreneurship
(is open to people of any age."I think entrepreneurship is really cool because age
doesn't really matter much,"Yadegari said."You're either good at what you do or you're
not,and the market decides the results."
英语(二)第4页共12页
Looking ahead,Yadegari hopes to continue building new technology companies.
“Ideally,”he said,“I want to create something that shapes the future.”
24.How does Cal AI help users track calories?
A.By hiring experts to estimate calories.
B.By asking users to type in food items.
C.By analyzing photos of food with AI.
D.By offering charge-free subscriptions.
25.Why did Yadegari want to create Cal AI?
A.To prepare for his exams.
B.To find jobs for his friends.
C.To make more money soon.
D.To simplify calorie tracking.
26.What does the underlined word "tedious"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Useless.
B.Boring.
C.Serious.
D.Dangerous.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Calorie Count App Developed by a Student
B.The Development of AI Technology in the US
C.The Urgency of Balancing Study and Business
D.How to Start a Tech Company at a Young Age

Google co-founder Sergey Brin told Stanford students his company now employs many
workers who never earned college degrees,Fortune reported.During a talk at Stanford
University in Palo Alto,California,Brin explained how Google's approach to hiring has
moved away from demanding formal degrees.
The numbers back up this change.Data from the Burning Glass Institute shows that in
2017,degree requirements were part of 93%of job postings at Google.By 2022,that
figure had dropped to 77%0.Other large tech companies have also begun judging candidates
by their abilities instead of their degrees.JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon expressed
similar views in 2024."If you look at skills of people,it's amazing how skilled people are in
something, but it didn't show up in their resume,"he said.
This shift raises questions about whether a college education is worth, especially as AI
tools got better at performing tasks that once required formal training. If you spent years
and tens of thousands of dollars earning a degree, companies'hiring people without that
certificate might feel disheartening. The change could leave graduates wondering if their
time and money were well-spent.
英语(二)第5页共12页
AI's popularity also creates environmental pressures.Training and running AI systems
requires tons of electricity and water for cooling data centers. As AI becomes more
integrated into hiring, operations, and daily business functions, energy consumption
grows. This can overuse power grids((电力网),increase costs for consumers and contribute
to pollution if the electricity comes from sources such as gas or coal.AI may help upgrade
some clean energy systems, but its resource demands present trade-offs.
The business community is recognizing that degree requirements often screen out
talented people unnecessarily. If you're entering the job market without a traditional
degree, focus on building demonstrable skills through online courses, certifications or
project portfolios(作品选集)that showcase your abilities..Many tech companies now
prioritize what you can do over where you studied.
28.Which situation matches the hiring phenomenon mentioned in the text?
A.A firm employs applicants with high degrees.
B.An enterprise focuses on working experience.
C.A corporation hires knowledgeable graduates.
D.A company values candidates'practical skills.
29.Why does the author mention AI in paragraph 3?
A.To show its impact on employment criteria.
B.To emphasize its advantages in job hunting.
C.To reveal its great harm to the environment.
D.To stress its wide use in modern companies.
30.What is the author's attitude towards the hiring shift at Google and other tech
companies?
A.Conservative.
B.Objective.
C.Unclear.
D.Doubtful.
31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To show eco-problems caused by AI.
B.To introduce ways to hunt good jobs.
C.To urge better education for students.
D.To present a shift in hiring standards.

It's not just morning larks and night owls. There're five unique types of sleepers out
there according to a new research, and which kind you are is tied to your health and
lifestyle. These "hidden subgroups"among early risers and late sleepers are each associated
英语(二)第6页共12页
with distinct patterns of human behavior and health.
One group of early birds, say, has the fewest health problems overall, while the other
group has higher rates of depression.Night owls, meanwhile, show even greater diversity
of cycles and outcomes."In today's digital era, sleep patterns are more diverse than ever,"
says Le Zhou,a neuroscience grad student from McGill University in Canada.
Scientists have previously categorized our 24-hour body clocks into multiple sleep
patterns, but the specific sleep patterns identified in this study are new.The researchers
examined the health data and self-reported sleep patterns of 27,030 UK adults in mid-life
to late-life,revealing two early bird subtypes and three night owl groups.Similar subtypes
emerged when the researchers applied their model to a second group of more than 10,000
US teenagers.
Subtype 1 is the first of the night owls, which is associated with risky lifestyle
behaviors and difficulties in emotional regulation.Subtype 2 is a night owl pattern that is
not so enviable.It's linked to depression,smoking,and higher heart-related risks.Those
that fall into this subtype have lower physical activity and are more likely to use
antidepressant(抗抑郁的)drugs.
Subtype 3 is a"morningness"pattern with fewer health issues.Sleepers that belong to
this subtype tend not to smoke, drink alcohol and engage in risky behaviors. They exhibit
higher anxiety, but generally have fewer emotional regulation issues.Subtype 4 is another
early-bird chronotype(睡眠类型)and tends to include more females. The category is linked
to depressive symptoms(and antidepressant drug prescriptions.
Subtype 5 is the final night owl group and is more male-dominated.It's associated with
increased intake of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs, leading to higher heart-related risks.
32.What do we know about the sleep types in the first paragraph?
A.They're divided into two categories.
B.They're relevant to people's wellness.
C.They were identified by US scientists.
D.They shared human behavioral patterns.
33.What can we learn about from the study in paragraph 3?
A.Sleep subtypes were found in earlier studies.
B.Participants from the UK had fixed lifestyles.
C.Opposite results were shown in the US group.
D.Subjects'health and sleep data were analyzed.
英语(二)第7页共12页
34.A characteristic of people in subtype three is that they have
A.frequent drug use
B.lower physical activity
C.healthier lifestyles
D.poor emotional control
35.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Early birds are healthier than night owls.
B.Women are more likely to be early-birds.
C.The majority of the subtype five are men.
D.Night owls face higher heart-related risks.

Building a lasting and meaningful self-care routine requires clear and thoughtful steps
instead of random or careless efforts.A well-designed guide can help you build a
sustainable self-care practice that truly fits your lifestyle and personal needs.
Find what makes you feel centered.
As expert Gill Lopez points out,self-care is not one-size-fits-all.36 You can start
by writing down as many joyful things as possible, such as your favorite color, gentle
touches, pleasant seasons, nice smells or relaxing music,to know yourself better.
Brainstorm how to include those enjoyable things into daily life.
37 For example, you may fill your room with colors and smells you love or set
fixed activities at certain times each day.Starting small makes the habit much easier to
form,so you're advised to add just one new self-care practice at a time.
·38
After deciding on proper self-care behaviors, plan when and how often you'll carry
them out.You can begin with short and easy tasks, like keeping away from electronics for
20 minutes during dinner.Once you keep it for a week, you may gradually set a more
challenging task.
Find support from people around you.
Doing self-care activities with partners who share the same goals helps you stay
consistent.39
Remember to adjust your plan over time.
Self-care needs trial and error, and your needs may change as life goes on.40
Simple, practical examples include taking a 10-minute walk outside, going to sleep earlier,
英语(二)第8页共12页

D.This helps you keep a healthy and happy lifestyle.
E.It can make your self-care practice more sustainable in the long run.

G.What might be self-care in one period might be less so in another period.

Lila was a 16-year-old girl who lived in a quiet coastal town. She had dreamed of
becoming a professional surfer since childhood. For years, she would rise before dawn to
practice on the shore, her small surfboard slicing through the waves.
Her family struggled financially-her mother worked double shifts at a local cafe to
make ends meet. Her father was a salesman, always on business trips. But Lila never let
hardship weaken her passion. She believed determination alone could turn her dream into
reality, and she pushed herself harder each day, even when the wind blew fiercely or the
icy water bit at her skin.
One afternoon,as Lila attempted a daring movement in a rough stretch of water,a
storm erupted without any sign.A towering wall of water crashed into her, sending her
board flying and hitting her body against an underwater rock. When she finally struggled
back to shore, her right leg was severely injured:a deep cut ran from her knee to her
ankle, and the bone stuck out through the skin.
英语(二)第11页共12页
She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors delivered crushing news:one of the
bones in her leg was broken and the risk of permanent damage was extreme.Physical
therapy()would be long, painful and far from guaranteed. Many medical experts
doubted she'd ever walk normally again, let alone stand on a surfboard.
Lila felt extremely upset. The sport she loved had been her entire world, and the
thought of never surfing again felt like losing a part of herself. She refused to look at the
physical therapy schedule her mother left on the table beside her.She spent days staring
blankly at the wall, her leg aching and her heart heavy with despair. Her mother sat by her
side every evening, gently urging her to try, tears in her eyes as she held Lila's injured
hand, but Lila would only turn away, too consumed by grief(沉浸在悲痛中)to speak.
