A School Guide to Serving Chopsticks
At Green River Vocational School, the students have lunch in the school canteen every day. This term, the school started a “clean table” program. The program asks students to use serving chopsticks and spoons when they share dishes. It also teaches them to wash hands before meals and keep voices low while eating.
The canteen puts a small blue card on each table. The card says, “Use serving chopsticks for shared dishes. Use your own chopsticks for your own bowl.” At first, some students thought it was a little troublesome. They were used to sharing food directly with their own chopsticks. After a health lesson, they understood that serving chopsticks could help keep a healthy eating environment.
Li Rui, a student in the cooking class, likes the program. He says that good table manners are not only rules but also ways to show care for others. When he serves vegetables to his classmate with serving chopsticks, he feels polite and warm. His teacher also asks students to explain the rule to their families at home.
Now more students follow the guide. They stand in line, order proper amounts of food, and put waste into the right bins after lunch. Before leaving, they also check whether the chairs are in the right places and remind friends not to waste soup or rice. The canteen becomes cleaner and quieter. The school believes that small actions at the table can help students build good habits for future work and life.
