UNIT 3 SPORTS AND FITNESS Ⅰ.阅读理解 A(2025湖南长沙模拟) Back in February, sophomore Jackie Hsiao of the UR Fencing Club competed in the 2025 Fencing Junior Olympics in Charlotte,NC,which was the summit of her six years of preparation and her first national-level competition against superior fencers. Hsiao’s fencing journey began at a summer camp before her eighth grade year.Despite spending long hours sweating in fencing gear and competing against more experienced opponents, which left her tired and frustrated, her time at camp awakened her interest in the sport, which she later pursued. In high school,Hsiao found a welcoming community of fencers and coaches, some of whom also went to participate in February’s Junior Olympics. She developed and refined her skills with the foil, the smallest and lightest fencing weapon targeting the body. In her senior year,Hsiao suffered a devastating ACL tear(前交叉韧带撕裂),which put her fencing career in danger.“I thought I would never get back into fencing,” she said. After surgery and nine months of punishing physical therapy two to three times a week,Hsiao began fencing again.Regarding the changes to her fencing after the injury,Hsiao noted,“I’ve always been a more defensive fencer so my fencing hasn’t changed too much after my injury.I do have to think more about getting my back leg under me while I fence.” Beyond the physical alterations to her style,Hsiao spoke on the mental adjustments for high-level competitions. She emphasized the importance of positive thinking and mental preparation, saying,“If you think you’re going to do badly,it does have an impact on how you fence.” Moreover, from recent meets, including the Junior Olympics, she learned to “trust instincts(直觉) and avoid overthinking during matches”. Hsiao also revealed the life lessons fencing has taught her, saying,“Not giving up is key and losing is one of the best ways to learn.” Her next goal in fencing is to continue competing at a national level and earn a rating from the United States Fencing Association through tournament victories. 1.What inspired Hsiao to engage in the fencing career initially? A.The influence of superior Olympic fencers. B.The supportive community in high school. C.Her desire to win national competitions. D.Her experience at a summer camp. 2.What impact did the ACL tear have on Hsiao? A.It caused her to adopt a more attacking style. B.It forced her to develop a habit of overthinking. C.It led her to focus more on physical adjustments. D.It completely ended her competitive fencing career. 3.Which of the following best describes Hsiao? A.Reflective and flexible. B.Cautious and hesitant. C.Talented and humble. D.Innovative and responsible. 4.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.The Mental Evolution:Hsiao’s Road to Positive Thinking B.The Rise of a National Champion:Jackie Hsiao’s Comeback C.Beyond the Limits:Balancing Training and Recovery in Fencing D.From Recovery to Recognition:A Fencer’s Journey of Perseverance B(2026江苏无锡期末) As the school year began, millions of students in 17 states, from New York to Kentucky, were newly prohibited from taking phones into the classroom. This brought the total to 35 states with such rules, though researchers had noted that scientific evidence for the benefits was thin. However,a new working paper by Dr.Alp Sungu of the University of Pennsylvania offers convincing evidence from a large-scale randomized controlled trial(RCT)—the gold standard in social science. The study involved 16,955 students taking 2,000 courses in India, randomly assigned to phone-submission or phone-access classrooms. The phone-free students performed better academically. The increase was greatest among first-year students who were low performers and studying subjects outside of science and maths. The average improvement was on the order of 0.086 standard deviations(标准差).This is small, but the effects of most educational interventions are small. For comparison,it is similar to “replacing an average teacher with a very good one” for a term, says Dr.Sungu. “That could make the difference between passing and failing, and potentially reduce dropout rates and increase graduation rates over time,” says Dr.Beland,an economist at Carleton University.“For low-achieving students, even slight differences can really matter,” he says. The study by Dr.Sungu and his team also found that bans created an environment that facilitated learning.Random classroom spot-checks found less student chatter and interrupting behaviour. Bans are easy to conduct, requiring no training and little investment.Perhaps more importantly, many students can see the benefits. After experiencing a ban for a term, students in the Indian study were 20% more likely to support prohibitions, with the largest increase in approval for the most restrictive policy option:phone-free schools. Even if banning phones becomes a universal,evidence-based policy, though, there are still tablets and laptops, equally distracting. Some studies of computer use in college classrooms in America found exam scores declined. This suggests that phone bans may fail,as in Swedish schools, because students simply switch to laptops.American schools should take notice. 5.What makes the findings of Dr.Sungu’s research convincing? A.The research method. B.The data analysis. C.The research duration. D.The theoretical foundation. 6.What does Dr.Beland think of phone bans? A.They rely much on teachers to succeed. B.They help reduce classroom misbehavior. C.They can bring about significant influence. D.They are mainly intended for phone addicts. 7.What happened to the Indian students after the phone ban? A.Top students made greater progress. B.They preferred less strict policies. C.Weak students supported the ban most. D.Their support for the ban increased. 8.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.Stricter phone bans are needed in US schools. B.Other electronic devices also deserve attention. C.Effects of the policy vary from country to country. D.The policy’s benefits may result from other factors. summer camp before her eighth grade year...her time at camp awakened her interest in the sport, which she later pursued.”可知,最初激励她从事击剑事业的是她在夏令营的经历。 2.C 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Regarding the changes to her fencing after the injury,Hsiao noted,‘I’ve always been a more defensive fencer so my fencing hasn’t changed too much after my injury.I do have to think more about getting my back leg under me while I fence.’”可知,前交叉韧带撕裂让她在击剑时更加关注身体上的调整。 3.A 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Regarding the changes to her fencing after the injury,Hsiao noted,‘I’ve always been a more defensive fencer so my fencing hasn’t changed too much after my injury.I do have to think more about getting my back leg under me while I fence.’”以及第五段中“Moreover, from recent meets, including the Junior Olympics, she learned to ‘trust instincts and avoid overthinking during matches.’”
