In the summer before my senior year of high school, my friends and I traveled to Ecuador on a volunteer trip with an organization called ME to WE.
Flashback to the fall of my junior year: my two friends and I went to an event called WE Day in Minneapolis, the United States, which first opened us up to the possibility of making a volunteer trip a reality. WE Day is an event put on by ME to WE, which has programs set up all around the world to help people in developing countries through the five aspects of education, clean water and sanitation (公共卫生), health, agriculture and food security, as well as income and livelihood.
For our global project, we wanted to do one of their volunteer trips in another country. Of course, this sounded like a great opportunity and we were ready to jump on it, but none of us were unaware of the term “voluntourism". This is when people travel to developing countries to volunteer, but in reality, they just make things worse than they originally were. This was definitely something we wanted to avoid, so we did a lot of research into the credibility of this program.
After research, we found it very credible and really liked the idea behind their projects, which was to give “hand ups”instead of “handouts". This means that they work to help the local people learn to maintain the work that they help start rather than just setting projects up and then leaving them behind.
When we arrived in Ecuador, we worked alongside community members to dig out old pipes on the top of a mountain that led to the town and gave them access to running water. Digging out pipes at such a high altitude was definitely a challenge, but being able to work alongside great people while doing it made it so much better. What’s more, my perspective has widened and now I look forward to a time when I can do something like this again.
24. How did WE Day most likely influence the author and her friends?
A. Convincing them to travel worldwide.
B. Giving them an overview of the world.
C. Motivating them to volunteer more abroad.
D. Making them aware of their local issues.
25. How does the author most probably feel about voluntourism?
A. Critical. B. Curious. C. Uncertain. D. Enthusiastic.
26. What is the core idea of the projects of ME to WE?
A. Providing immediate financial aid.
B. Expanding their reach to more people.
C. Replacing labor with modern technology.
D. Equipping locals with sustainable skills.
27. What was the author probably assigned to do in Ecuador?
A. Teach the villagers life skills. B. Trace the history of Ecuador.
C. Restore the water supply for the locals. D. Communicate with the local talents.

Understanding a simple-looking English sentence such as “I read this article yesterday” actually requires some complicated conceptual computation: a subject (“T”) performed an action (“read”) on an object (“article”) at a specific time (“yesterday”). But the human brain routinely does this work nearly at once based on the language’s grammatical rules, says linguist Andrea E. Martin. And Martin’s team has now found that the human brain can accommodate fundamental grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.
For a recent study in PLOS Biology, the researchers observed variations in Dutch-speaking participants’ brain waves while they listened to a Dutch-language audiobook. To visualize these changes, the scientists used a metric (指标) quantifying how many new “predictions” the brain makes of words that could come next in a sentence. This framework was then tested against three different parsing (语法分析的) strategies, or linguistic models that illustrate how the brain builds information over time.
Previous English-based studies with a similar setup concluded in favor of a model where listeners “wait and see” how each phrase in a sentence will end before interpreting it. But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a highly predictive model; participants tended to finish each phrase in their head preemptively before it was complete. (A third model, in which listeners wait to hear all of the phrases in a sentence before interpreting any part of it, is seldom used in either language.)
In Dutch language structure, verbs come near the end of a sentence rather than immediately after the subject like they do in English, while in Korean, the subject is usually left out and in Arabic verbs often come first. So flexibility is vital in processing different languages simply because they have different properties.
The findings support the need for scientists to include more diversity when crafting linguistic models. “This is going to help us capture how the brain is understanding the structured meaning of language, and the social application of language,” Martin says. “There’s so much yet to be understood in the brain.”
28. Why does the author cite the example in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce a grammar rule. B. To analyze an English sentence.
C. To bring in a new research finding. D. To stress the complexity of human brain.
29. What does the underlined word “preemptively” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. By accident. B. In advance. C. On time. D. By mistake.
30. Which sentence can match the Dutch language structure?
A. Universe the about documentary saw. B. Saw I a documentary about the universe.
C. I saw a documentary about the universe. D. I a documentary about the universe saw.
31. What does Martin try to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The challenges of brain researches. B. The application of the present findings.
C. The purposes of different linguistic models. D. The necessity to diversify subjects in studies.

Named as the Oxford Word of the Year for 2024, “brain rot” refers to the supposed decline of a person’s mental condition as a result of watching too much “unimportant or unchallenging” content online. While often used jokingly, a new study from Tianjin Normal University suggests there may be some truth to it.
Researchers examined the brains of 111 students, all regular viewers of short videos, and found that those most attached to them had noticeable differences in brain structure. They had increased grey matter in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the brain area linked to decision-making and emotional management, and in the cerebellum, which plays a role in movement and emotions. The researchers proposed that regularly watching these videos might strengthen brain-related pathways, making the habit more deeply rooted.
A second examination showed increased synchronization (同步) in many brain areas, including those involved in self-control and self-reflection. This could indicate difficulties stopping videos and increased social comparison. Participants (参与者) who scored higher on a questionnaire measuring “envy” also showed stronger links between video addiction and brain differences, suggesting that either “envy” drives social media use or that extended video-viewing promotes “envy”.
Despite the alarming implications, the study has limitations. Similar concerns about technology’s impact on the brain have surfaced before, such as claims that digital media have posed an existential threat. Yet, no conclusive evidence has proven these fears true. Professor Peter Etchells argues there’s no strong science showing short videos uniquely harm the brain.
A big weakness of the study is its one-time testing method. If the goal were to prove that watching hours of short videos harms the brain, a more effective approach would be to examine participants’ brains before and after they watched different amounts of these videos. But this study only looked at data from one moment in time, without comparing changes over time. There was no before-and-after comparison to show cause and effect. Thus, a healthier approach is to reflect on media habits, making mindful choices while appreciating the benefits of technology.
32. What is “brain rot” according to paragraph 1?
A. A real disease proven by doctors. B. A popular trend among young people.
C. A mental state caused by online content. D. A new concern about short videos’ effects.
33. Which is one of the main findings of the research?
A. Less ability to compare themselves to others.
B. Worse control over emotions.
C. Harm to brain parts controlling movement.
D. More grey matter in areas for making decisions.
34. The author questions the study’s design primarily for its ______.
A. overemphasis on envy-related data. B. lack of different types of participants.
C. failure to establish cause and effect. D. reliance on subjective measurements.
35. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Brain Rot: Real Threat or Overstated Fear?
B. Social Media: Mental Activation or Brain Harm?
C. Why “Brain Rot” Became Word of the Year?
D. How Social Media Reshapes the Human Brain?

Ahmed is a sixth-grade student and his older brother Faraz, who studies at a nearby college while working part-time, frequently sends small gifts home, delighting his younger brother with surprises. However, Ahmed would spend so much time playing with these gifts when alone that he became careless with his studies. This was starting to affect his school performance, causing him to fall behind his classmates.
Recently, Ahmed discovered a passion for music and often imagined how amazing it would be to own a pair of high-quality headphones for his favorite songs. As his birthday drew near, he couldn’t stop thinking about those special headphones. When he excitedly called Faraz to ask for them, Faraz promised him a basketball as the birthday gift, but added that the headphones would only come if Ahmed earned good grades that semester.
Determined to earn his reward, Ahmed put away all distractions and buried himself in study every day. Hard work became his routine and sometimes he even missed meals, worrying his mother enough that she began bringing food to his room. As exams approached, Ahmed became so focused that his birthday nearly slipped his mind.
The day of Ahmed’s birthday finally arrived. Early in the morning, his friends showed up at the door and his parents came from behind with a cake. Together, they all cheered, “Happy Birthday!”
The celebration was wonderful, and Ahmed received many gifts, including the basketball that Faraz had promised and mailed since his college schedule kept him away. While pleased with the basketball, Ahmed couldn’t help but wonder about the headphones. Had Faraz hidden them somewhere in the house and planned to give them to him only after the exam results? What if his exam results weren’t good enough?
After the party, curiosity and anxiety overcame Ahmed. He sneaked (溜) into Faraz’s room where his eyes were immediately drawn to the headphone box. Unable to contain his excitement, Ahmed took it to hide in his own room secretly.
Paragraph 1:
Days passed, and Faraz returned home on the day Ahmed’s exam results were announced.

Paragraph 2:
Faraz was disappointed, saying Ahmed had stolen something meant to be his.

W: So it was. As a result, I spent the rest of my holiday out of the water. What about you? Did you take your usual vacation?
M: Yes, but I actually fell in love with extreme sports. I went rock climbing every weekend during the two months.

W: You’re one of those people who loves heights aren’t you?

M: Hello, Nancy. I know you are one of a few female taxi drivers in the city and you drive for a living. What made you want to be a taxi driver in the first place?
W: I remembered the first time when I saw those taxi drivers dressed so neatly in their uniforms as a kid, and I thought driving was really cool. When I finally learned to drive, it was something I greatly enjoyed and I took pride in driving well.
M: So what's the best part of your job?
W: I can see this city changes from season to season because the job is being outdoors. And there is scenery I would probably never have seen in another job. I love all kinds of weather. I like to leave the window down in a fine rain, when I have a long drive, and maybe at the end of the day. I sometimes go past my home to tell my two little children I'll be home soon, when they always want to come along in my car.
M: I guess all kids like to be taken for a ride sometimes.
W: Yes but I cannot take them with me. So I have to pay the fares for them sometimes, and take them out in my taxi, because I really think it is fun to drive out to the countryside for a long drive, with the fresh air and sun shining.

17. What does the speaker say about first-aid boxes on the market?
A. They are too costly. B. They are not practical. C. They are of poor quality.
18. When is a lightweight first-aid box especially important?
A. Going traveling. B. Being ill at home. C. Shopping at the market.
19. What should be considered when preparing the basic medicine?
A. The duration of the trip.
B. The design of the box.
C. The size of the family.
20. What does the speaker advise us to do?
A. Store as much medicine as possible.
B. Take a first-aid box along any time.
C. Create a personalized first-aid box.
B 18. A 19. C 20. C
M: While there are a number of first-aid boxes on the market, they often lack some things you need or have other things that you don’t need. Instead of buying such a first-aid box, you can save money and get everything you need in the box by creating your own. Select a small box or bag, which is light and can hold all of your first-aid materials. This is of particular importance if you need it while you are taking a trip away from home. Separate your first-aid box or bag into two sections. One section should include all of your basic medical supplies, such as bandages, while the second one should include medicine. Make sure that your box contains important basic medicine. There should be enough for your family or group, which means that the larger your family or groups is, the more medicine you need in your first-aid box. When it comes to bandages and other lightweight items, the more the better. Keep other necessary things in your first-aid box as well. For example, if someone in your family has high blood pressure, the first-aid box is a great place to keep blood pressure medicine, in case there is an emergency when you are far from medical help. You might also put emergency phone numbers, snake bite medicine or other items into your first-aid box.

C 25. A 26. D 27. C
根据第二段“Flashback to the fall of my junior year: my two friends and I went to an event called WE Day in Minneapolis, the United States, which first opened us up to the possibility of making a volunteer trip a reality. (回到我高三那年的秋天:我和两个朋友参加了美国明尼阿波利斯的一场名为“WE Day”的活动,正是这场活动让我们首次意识到,将志愿旅行变为现实是有可能的)”可知,WE Day活动让作者和朋友看到了参与海外志愿活动的可能性,进而激发了他们去国外做志愿者的想法。故选C项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“This is when people travel to developing countries to volunteer, but in reality, they just make things worse than they originally were. (这种情况是指人们前往发展中国家参加志愿活动,但实际上他们只是让情况比原本更糟糕)”可知,作者认为“志愿旅游”可能会产生负面效果,并明确表示要避免这种情况,由此可推断作者对“志愿旅游”持批评态度。故选A项。
根据第四段“This means that they work to help the local people learn to maintain the work that they help start rather than just setting projects up and then leaving them behind. (这意味着他们致力于帮助当地人学会维护他们协助启动的工作,而不是仅仅设立项目后就弃之不顾)”可知,ME to WE项目的核心是帮助当地人掌握可持续的技能,以自主维护项目。故选D项。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“When we arrived in Ecuador, we worked alongside community members to dig out old pipes on the top of a mountain that led to the town and gave them access to running water. (当我们抵达厄瓜多尔后,我们与社区成员一起在山顶挖掘通向城镇的旧管道,让当地居民能够用上自来水)”可知,作者在厄瓜多尔的主要工作是修复当地的供水管道,恢复供水。故选C项。
C
C 29. B 30. D 31. D
根据第一段“But the human brain routinely does this work nearly at once based on the language’s grammatical rules, says linguist Andrea E. Martin. And Martin’s team has now found that the human brain can accommodate fundamental grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.(但语言学家Andrea E. Martin表示,人脑通常会根据语言的语法规则几乎立即完成这项工作。而且,Martin的团队现在发现,人脑能够通过调整处理每个句子的方式来适应不同语言之间根本性的语法差异)”可知,作者开篇举例是为了引出Martin团队的新研究发现,即大脑处理不同语言的灵活性。故选C。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“participants tended to finish each phrase in their head preemptively before it was complete(参与者倾向于在短语未完成时preemptively在脑中补全它)”可知,上文“But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a highly predictive model(但在Martin的研究中,说荷兰语的人强烈倾向于一个高度预测的模型)”说的是参与者需要再头脑中补全每一个句子,下文说的是在完成之前,可推理出此处说的是参与者倾向于在短语未完成时提前在脑中补全它,可推理出“preemptively”意为“提前地”。
根据第四段“In Dutch language structure, verbs come near the end of a sentence rather than immediately after the subject like they do in English, while in Korean, the subject is usually left out and in Arabic verbs often come first. So flexibility is vital in processing different languages simply because they have different properties.(在荷兰语的结构中,动词位于句子的末尾,而不是像英语那样紧跟在主语之后;而在韩语中,主语通常被省略;在阿拉伯语里,动词往往放在最前面。因此,在处理不同语言时,灵活性至关重要,因为它们具有不同的特性)”可知,荷兰语结构为“主语+宾语+动词”结构。选项D“I a documentary about the universe saw”为“主语I+宾语a documentary about the universe+动词saw”结构,符合荷兰语结构。

C 33. D 34. C 35. A
根据第一段中“‘brain rot’ refers to the supposed decline of a person’s mental condition as a result of watching too much ‘unimportant or unchallenging’ content online.(“脑雾”指因过度浏览网络“无意义或低智力”内容而导致的精神退化现象)”可知,“脑雾”是一种由网络内容导致的精神状态。
根据第二段中“Researchers examined the brains of 111 students, all regular viewers of short videos, and found that those most attached to them had noticeable differences in brain structure. They had increased grey matter in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the brain area linked to decision making and emotional management, and in the cerebellum, which plays a role in movement and emotions.(研究人员对111名短视频高频使用者的大脑进行扫描后发现:沉迷程度越深者,脑结构变异越显著。这些受试者眶额皮层(决策与情绪管理中枢)及小脑(调控运动与情绪区域)的灰质明显增厚)”可知,研究的主要发现之一是决策相关区域的灰质增多。故选D项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“A big weakness of the study is its one-time testing method. If the goal were to prove that watching hours of short videos harms the brain, a more effective approach would be to examine participants’ brains before and after they watched different amounts of these videos. But this study only looked at data from one moment in time, without comparing changes over time. There was no before-and-after comparison to show cause and effect.(这项研究的一大缺陷在于其单次检测法。若要证明长时间观看短视频会损伤大脑,更有效的方法应是对受试者观看不同时长视频前后的脑部变化进行对比。但该研究仅采集了单一时间节点的数据,既未追踪长期变化,也未设置前后对照实验来验证因果关系)”可知,作者质疑该研究的设计主要是因为它未设置前后对照实验来验证因果关系,即未能建立因果关系。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段“Named as the Oxford Word of the Year for 2024, “ brain rot ” refers to the supposed decline of a person’s mental condition as a result of watching too much “unimportant or unchallenging” content online. While often used jokingly, a new study from Tianjin Normal University suggests there may be some truth to it.(2024年度牛津词典将“脑雾”选为年度词汇,该词指因过度浏览网络“无意义或低智力”内容而导致的精神退化现象。尽管这个说法常被戏谑使用,但天津师范大学的最新研究表明,其中或许确有科学依据)”、第二段中“Researchers examined the brains of 111 students, all regular viewers of short videos, and found that those most attached to them had noticeable differences in brain structure.(研究人员对111名经常观看短视频的学生的大脑进行了检查,发现那些对短视频最着迷的学生的大脑结构有明显差异)”和倒数第二段“Despite the alarming implications, the study has limitations. Similar concerns about technology’s impact on the brain have surfaced before, such as claims that digital media have posed an existential threat. Yet, no conclusive evidence has proven these fears true. Professor Peter Etchells argues there’s no strong science showing short videos uniquely harm the brain.(尽管研究结果令人担忧,但其本身存在局限性。 故A项“Brain Rot: Real Threat or Overstated Fear?(脑雾:是真正的威胁还是被夸大的恐惧?)” 故选A项。

Getting off the beaten path, meeting locals, and visiting incredible sites have made my life better. 离开常规路线,遇见当地居民,探访绝美风景——这些都让我的生活更美好)”介绍旅行给自己带来的好处,后文“While I go into a lot of depth in my new book on budget travel, I want to share some tips with you. (尽管我在新出版的穷游指南中已经做了详尽阐述,但在此仍想与你分享几条实用建议)”提到要分享旅行建议,因此F项“And if you welcome such experiences, it will make your life better, too.

Proposal for AI-empowered PE Elective Courses
As a student passionate about innovation, I propose integrating AI into PE electives. My suggestion is to develop an AI system that designs personalized training plans based on students’ fitness levels and tracks their progress through wearable devices.
Traditional PE classes often adopt a “one-size-fits-all” approach, which may not suit everyone. AI can analyze individual data to create tailored exercises, ensuring safer and more effective workouts. It also provides instant feedback to correct movements, reducing injury risks.
This approach will improve overall fitness and help students build sustainable exercise habits. Let’s embrace AI to make PE smarter and healthier!

Days passed, and Faraz returned home on the day Ahmed’s exam results were announced. After school that day, Ahmed raced home, excitedly sharing that he’d come in second in his class. The family was overjoyed, and Faraz proudly declared, “Ahmed, you’ve earned your reward!” But when Faraz returned empty-handed from his room, his face fell. “They’re gone,” he said, confused. After an awkward silence among the family, Ahmed spoke in a shaky voice, “I took them ... I was afraid you would withhold them if I failed.” He then fetched the headphones and handed them to Faraz.
Faraz was disappointed, saying Ahmed had stolen something meant to be his. Feeling ashamed, Ahmed cried and ran to his room. Concerned, Faraz came to Ahmed and found him in bed, face buried in his pillow. When Ahmed felt his brother’s touch, he turned and hugged him, apologizing through tears. Faraz hugged him back. “What you did was wrong,” he said gently, “but recognizing your mistake is what matters.” Ahmed nodded, wiping his eyes. “I’ll never do it again.” With a warm smile, Faraz patted his head and said, “Come on! Your headphones are waiting.”
