Experiencing Chinese Calligraphy
Last weekend, a friend and I went to visit an art museum. We found many works of traditional Chinese calligraphy on show. It was my first time to visit such an exhibition, and I was really excited. Although I don’t know much about Chinese calligraphy, I can see it everywhere in China. It is in the advertisements, on posters, and on buildings.
Textbook
Many homes have it on their walls or front doors. You may even come across people writing calligraphy with water and a big brush on the ground in a park. I came to learn that calligraphy is viewed by Chinese people as one of the highest forms of art.
In the museum, my Chinese friend told me an interesting story about calligrahy. Wang Xizhi (303-361) was one of the best calligraphers in history. He once attended a party at the Orchid Pavilion. Every guest was
Textbook
expected to write a poem during the party. At the end of the party, Wang wrote the introduction to the poems.
The next day, Wang looked at his calligraphy—the Lanting Xu (introduction to the poems written at the Orchid Pavilion) —and realized that it was his best calligraphy ever. He then tried to recreate the calligraphy in the exact same style, but found it impossible. When he was at the party, he was very happy and relaxed. This made his calligraphy
Textbook
especially lively. People later said that the calligraphy in the Lanting Xu looked like a Chinese dragon at play.
It is a pity that the original version of the Lanting Xu has been lost, but it was copied and studied by many calligraphers. In fact, calligraphy students today still copy the Lanting Xu, along with other famous works in history. Doing so not only helps them to improve their own calligraphy, but also develops their artistic senses.
Textbook
While I still don’t understand enough about Chinese calligraphy, I have begun to see the beauty in it beyond the meaning of the words. As an art form, it is meant to inspire, to make us think, and to show our understanding of beauty.

Tapescript
Yaming: Look at these ancient Chinese paintings.
Ella: I like this one! It’s so different from Western paintings.
Emma: It’s really long!
Yaming: Yes. Traditional Chinese painters preferred to show several scenes
from right to left. This painting tells you a story by bringing you
on a journey.
Tapescript
Ella: Traditional Western paintings often tell a story too, but they usually
show only one scene.
Emma: Also, they often show things like in a photograph.
Yaming: That’s right! Here, the Chinese painter let his brush dance across
the painting. Instead of painting everything exactly, he tried to show
us his idea of nature.
Tapescript
Ella: Hmm... There are a lot of empty areas with no paint at all.
Еmmа: In many Western paintings, it’s the opposite. Every part of the
background is covered in paint. And they often have dark shadows.
Yaming: But Chinese painters do have one thing in common with Western
painters ... They use their art to express their feelings and
understanding of the world!

I like a stone sculpture best among all artworks. It looks quite lifelike and full of power. It shows a young man chasing his dream bravely. This piece makes me think that we should never give up facing difficulties. It took the sculptor plenty of time to create such a great work. The artist caught the spirit of young people perfectly.
