Anyone studying modern Chinese art will unavoidably meet the monumental figure Qi Baishi (1864-1957). Coming from a poor peasant family, Qi began learning art relatively late. Yet through consistent determination, he progressed from a village carpenter and folk artist to one of the most celebrated painters in Chinese history.
Instead of simply copying classical masters, he absorbed impressions from mountains and rivers and painted them from memory. The resulting album, Borrowing Scenes, reflects a striking admission: He could only borrow beauty from nature rather than possess it. This humbleness became central to his artistic philosophy.
Qi’s approach was deeply shaped by his early training as a woodcarver and seal carver. He learned to “do subtraction” — removing unnecessary elements and keeping only what impressed him most. On paper, every fish seems to carry a sword (剑) on its back. This extraordinary vitality brings each creature to life with just a few brushstrokes.
From 1919 to 1928, Qi underwent a major transformation, known as the “old-age change”. He developed a bold new style that mixed literati elegance with the direct appeal of folk art — using bright red flowers against heavy black ink. The result was fresh, powerful, and deeply original.
His success lies not only in his talents but also in energetic practice. Admirers have compared him to Picasso. However, Picasso once said he learned from Qi rather than teaching him. Qi’s influence reached the West when his work was exhibited at San Francisco’s de Young Museum in 1960 — the first solo (单独的) exhibition by a Chinese artist in the US.
Today, Qi Baishi remains a symbol of how tradition and innovation can walk hand in hand.
4. What lies at the heart of Qi Baishi’s artistic belief?
A. Modesty before nature. B. Borrowing from masters.
C. Striking scenes of nature. D. Pursuit of inner perception.
5. What artistic idea did Qi Baishi get from his early training?
A. Less is more. B. Every detail counts.
C. Imagination comes first. D. Nature is the best teacher.
6. Which word can best describe Qi Baishi according to paragraph 4?
A. Conventional. B. Ambitious. C. Innovative. D. Stylish.
7. What does Qi Baishi’s success show?
A. Still waters run deep. B. Early birds catch the worms.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
【答案】4. A 5. A 6. C 7. D

A new island to support wildlife is being created in the UK. The National Trust, a conservation organization, recently sank three large boats into the Blackwater Estuary (河口) in Essex, England, to form the base of the island. Birds can rest there, and the structure will protect the area’s salt marsh (盐沼) habitats, where many plant and animal species live.
An estuary is where a river widens and flows into the sea. The Blackwater Estuary is home to some of the UK’s most threatened seabirds. Experts hope the artificial island will be a safe place for these birds.
To make the artificial island, the team cut holes in the bottom of the boats and poured mud into them to weigh them down. It took about 282,000 cubic feet of mud to fill and surround the boats — enough to fill more than three Olympic swimming pools. More mud will be piled on top, and then a layer of gravel (砾石) will be added. Once the work is complete, the island will be slightly larger than a football field. It will be a place for the birds to rest, even when the tide is at its highest and nearby shores are largely underwater.
Along with creating a new home for birds, the team hopes the island will slow the erosion of the salt marsh inside the estuary. Erosion can happen when flooding and waves pull soil and rocks into the sea. The new island should act as a defense, sheltering the salt marsh from waves to protect the habitat.
Katy Gilchrist, coastal project manager for the National Trust, said the program was a form of “marine recycling” because it transformed retired boats into a reserve for wildlife. “We’re basically turning history into habitat,” she added. “And as far as we know, no one has attempted anything quite like this before.”
8. Why is the new island being built?
A. To serve as a scenic spot. B. To address waste management.
C. To recycle old boats for fishing. D. To protect wildlife and its habitats.
9. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning “three Olympic swimming pools”?
A. The total area of the new island. B. The depth of the artificial island.
C. The huge amount of mud needed. D. The number of boats used in the project.
10. What does the underlined word “erosion” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Influence of waves on bird habitats. B. The filling of soil and rocks into the sea.
C. The formation of new land from mud and gravel. D. Gradual destruction of land by water and waves.
11. What can be inferred from Katy Gilchrist’s words in the last paragraph?
A. The National Trust copied an old idea. B. Marine recycling is common in the UK.
C. The project gives old boats a new natural use. D. The island will be for studying history and wildlife.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. C

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“It took about 282,000 cubic feet of mud to fill and surround the boats — enough to fill more than three Olympic swimming pools.(填满并环绕这些船只需要约28.2万立方英尺的泥浆,足够装满三个以上奥林匹克游泳池)”可知,作者提到“三个奥运游泳池”试图说明需要大量淤泥。
根据最后一段“Katy Gilchrist, coastal project manager for the National Trust, said the program was a form of “marine recycling” because it transformed retired boats into a reserve for wildlife.(国家信托基金会的海岸项目主管凯蒂·吉尔克里斯特表示,该项目是一种“海洋回收”形式,因为它将退役船只改造成野生动物的庇护所)”可知,该项目使旧船获得了新的自然用途。

Soon, people with visual impairments might read regular books using a new audio device. Developed by MIT, this finger-worn device aims to give them affordable, immediate access to printed text.
The FingerReader, a 3D printed trial model, fits like a ring. It is equipped with a small camera that scans text. Software tracks finger movements, identifies words, and processes the information. A machine voice reads aloud. It quickly translates books, menus, and other materials needed for daily living.
“It’s like reading with the tip of your finger,” said Pattie Maes, an MIT professor who founded and led the research group developing the model. “It’s more flexible and immediate than any current solution,” she added.
Developers faced unusual challenges in making the device. It uses vibration (震动) motors to warn users when they wander off the line of text, and audio signals to indicate the start and finish of the reading material. To accomplish this, developers spent three years coding software and experimenting with various designs. They also received feedback from people who are visually impaired.
Much work remains before the FingerReader is ready for the market. It needs adjustments to work on cell phones. The device can read papers, books, and computer screens, but it struggles with touch screens — touching the screen with the fingertip shifts the text and produces unintended results.
Jerry Berrier, aged 62, was born blind. He is attracted to the portability (便携) of the FingerReader. He sees promise in its offer of real-time use.
“When I go to the doctor’s office, there may be forms that I read before I sign them,” Berrier said. “Everywhere we go, for folks who are sighted, there are things that inform us about the products we interact with. I want to be able to interact with those same products, regardless of how I have to do it.”
“Any tool that gives better access to printed material helps us live fuller, richer, more productive lives,” Berrier added.
12. How does the FingerReader begin its reading process?
A. By reading the text aloud with a machine voice.
B. By scanning text with a small camera.
C. By tracking the finger movements.
D. By identifying the printed words.
13. What problem does the FingerReader have with touch screens?
A. The camera fails to identify words.
B. Audio signals do not work on them.
C. Touching them moves the text around.
D. The software is not coded for digital texts.
14. What does Jerry Berrier think of the future of the FingerReader?
A. Hopeful. B. Limited. C. Uncertain. D. Challenging.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Widespread Use and Popularity of FingerReader
B. A New Reading Device for the Visually Impaired
C. An Introduction to FingerReader’s Working Principles
D. From Challenge to Solution: The Story of FingerReader

In the vast world of the Internet, there are special places where people who love poetry can gather. ____16____ Unlike a physical classroom or a library reading room, this is an online forum where poetry lovers from around the world meet to share their passion.
____17____ Originally, the idea was simple: Members would post their favorite poems and comment on them. However, the forum quickly evolved into something much more dynamic. It became a safe and inspiring space for members to share their own original writing.

This online platform connects them to the wider English-speaking world. ____18____ They receive feedback and encouragement from peers around the globe, helping them grow as writers.
The feedback from members is often full of praise and suggestions. As one forum member described it, “I have seen that all the poems shared here are wonderful and they inspire me in several ways to share my own poems with you.” Another member added that the forum acts as a “growth tool” that helps him discover his hidden talents. ____19____ It is about building confidence.
The value of this forum extends beyond just learning grammar — it’s about the human connection. It proves that when people engage with creative material, they start seeing things from new angles. In a world that often feels divided, a forum dedicated to poetry might seem like a small thing. ____20____ It proves that a few lines of verse can connect hearts across any distance.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a pouring afternoon. I sat quietly on a crowded bus, feeling discouraged because I had just suffered a failure in a tough job interview. Doubts and sadness filled my heart, leaving me in low spirits.
At the next stop, an elderly man in a worn-out coat got on the bus. He looked rather awkward and struggled hard to keep his balance among numerous standing passengers. Seeing his difficulty, I immediately stood up and politely offered him my seat. “Thank you so much, young man,” he whispered softly, his eyes shining with sincere gratitude that I had never expected.
As he settled down, his eyes caught sight of the interview resume (简历) held in my hand. He asked gently, “Did you have a hard day today, son?” “Actually, I’m out of work now,” I sighed helplessly, staring down at the floor. “I just came back from an interview which ended up in vain.”
The old man wore a gentle smile and tapped my hand comfortingly. “Never let such failures beat you down,” he said patiently. “If one door closes, it never means there is no way forward.” We soon began to chat freely. He told me that he used to work as a skilled carpenter, yet he had to give up his beloved career because of a serious injury. Even so, he kept spending his spare mornings doing voluntary work at the local community center to help those in need, and he rarely complained about any hardships in life.
When the bus finally arrived at his stop, he slowly reached into his pocket and took out a small, delicately carved wooden bird.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
“I want you to keep this,” he insisted. I was astonished and attempted to turn down his gift, thinking it might be precious to him. But he gently placed the carved bird into my hand. “I carved it myself after I was forced to quit my job,” he added with a warm smile. “It always reminds me that I can still create beauty even after suffering misfortunes.” He encouraged me to cheer up and never give in to temporary failures. Shortly afterwards, he headed for the bus door.
As he disappeared into the rain, I held the wooden bird tightly in my hand. Great warmth flooded my heart. I sat there, staring at the delicately carved bird. His words echoed in my mind. I felt a sudden wave of hope. It struck me that adversity was unavoidable in life. From then on, I made up my mind to face all difficulties bravely and keep going in pursuit of my dream. Since then, the little bird has served as a reminder for me to move forward with constant courage.

D
