When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.
It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He returned home in Des Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? "He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others,"said his mother, Cortney Lewis. "That really hurt him."
Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?
A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to watch a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth-grader from Washington, Iowa. The boy, then 14, had become an Internet star after posting videos of his slam dunks (扣篮), and, like Jayce, he lost most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce—he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And what's more inspiring is that a family friend had already reached the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build Jayce's confidence.
"It reassured me,"said Lewis. "I know in my heart that everything's going to be OK. Trashaun has grown up to be a wonderful kid. And I know Jayce is too."
Trashaun did get contact with Jayce. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later, and they instantly bonded.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard loud voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop,"someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.
They were heading toward the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back along the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
"She would have run for safety like everyone else!"Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside."She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded on the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

George's mother was very poor and sick. Instead of having bright fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under trees.
One fine day in July, his sick mother sent him to the woods. He was to stay there all day, to get as much wood as he could.
It was a bright and sunny day, and George worked very hard, so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and eat his dinner. While he hunted for a spot along the bank he saw among the grass some fine, wild strawberries.
"How good these will be with my bread and butter!"George thought. Lining his cap with leaves, he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find, and then seated himself by the river.
It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark room in the village.
George thought of all this, and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, "How much Mom would like these!"So he stopped, and put the strawberry back. "Shall I save them for her?"he said, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with longing eyes.
"I will eat half, and take the other half to her,"he said at last, and he divided them into two heaps (堆). But each heap looked so small that he put them together again.
"I will only taste one,"he thought. As he lifted it to his mouth again, he saw that he had taken the finest so he put it back. "I will keep them all for her,"he said with great happiness, and then he covered them up nicely, ready to take home.

In a bakery store, some cakes are put in a row on a shelf during the Christmas season. Here you may select the one that suits your taste most, and you are even allowed to sample them before coming to a decision.
I had often wondered whether some people, who had no intention of making a purchase, would take advantage of this. One day I asked a shop girl this question, and the answer was "yes". "Now there's one old gentleman, for instance,"she told me, "he comes here almost every week and samples each one of the cakes, though he never buys anything, and I suspect he never will. Well, let him come if he wants to. And I hope there are a lot more stores where he can go and get his share. He looks as if he needs it, and I suppose he can't afford it."
She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman limped (跛行) up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of cakes with great interest. "Hey, that's the very gentleman I've been talking about,"whispered the shop girl, and then turned to him. "Would you like to sample them, sir? Here's a spoon for you to use."The elderly gentleman, who was poorly but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the cakes, only breaking off occasionally to wipe his red eyes with a large torn handkerchief. "This is quite good.""This is not bad either, but a little heavy."All the time, it was quite evident that he sincerely believed that he might eventually buy one of those cakes, and I was positive that he did not for a moment feel that he was in any way cheating the store. Poor old man! Probably he had come down in the world and this sampling was all that was left from the time when he could afford to come and select his favorite cake.
Among the crowd of happy and prosperous looking Christmas shoppers, the little black figure of the old man seemed pitiful and out of place.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp,"and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
"Tom!"she cried. "Help!"
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside "the polar bear capital of the world"- the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears—like all wild animals—should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though—he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter (相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar (吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

I woke at 5:30 a.m. after a restless night's sleep. I slowly unzipped the tent door to inspect the new day. Just like yesterday, the wind had dropped. It was another beautiful Arctic day. I crawled out of my sleeping bag unwillingly. I am normally a morning person but the intense cold outside made that morning most unappealing. Anyhow, it was time to greet Charlie and start the day.
My dog Charlie was up and he was bouncing up and down at the end of his chain looking well rested. I poured what looked like a pound of dog food into his bowl.
Stepping out of the tent, I looked around for bears or tracks and saw none. It would never be a good thing to meet a polar bear. An Inuit (伊努伊特人) once told me that I should watch out for polar bears. He said that if I met a polar bear, I should keep the following rules in mind. First, keep eye contact, move sideways or slightly forward, never backward, and stay calm. Do not show fear and stand beside a large object to make myself appear as large as possible. Weapons like a flare gun (信号枪) are necessary, but do not shoot unless forced to. Don't wound a bear, or you'll make it even more dangerous, and never run.
It was only six o'clock, so I decided to have a leisurely breakfast of a bowl of milk powder, coconut flakes, and butter mixed with warm water. I sat on my sled (雪橇) to enjoy my first breakfast of the expedition only to find that after the third spoonful it was frozen. So much for leisurely breakfasts! I added more warm water and ate the rest as quickly as possible.
Suddenly I heard a deep, long growl coming from Charlie's throat. In a flash I looked at him and then in the direction in which he was staring. It was a female polar bear followed by two cubs (幼崽) slowly, purposefully toward me. They were two hundred yards away.

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship.
My parents moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs but they didn't realize I was really hurt when I said goodbye to my old friends. It felt awful to be a new student in the school and when my classmates were chatting, what I could do was to be caught up in my thoughts watching the clouds outside the window. I was not good at math or history; nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid. I had a few friends back at my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones who I could be friends with for my whole life. I felt I had achieved a point of saturation (饱和) with regard to having friends and I could make no further addition to my friend list. I was ashamed of myself, so I believed I deserved no notice from others until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, outspoken and easy-going. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day and yet I never talked to her. We were in the same class but we were poles apart. How I wished I could be like her or at least be a friend of hers!
It was another ordinary day. I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing songs with their friends but who could I sing songs with? I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.

In a meeting room, I faced the judges seated behind a table holding my fate in their hands. These same judges had rejected me twice before. This was my last chance. Would it finally be my turn?
"Tell us, Jason,"one judge said, "why do you want to be Pistol Pete?"That summer I watched a cowboy football game. I was attracted by Pistol Pete. He was larger than our body. He could get everyone in the entire stadium on their feet shouting "Come on!"and make sure they had fun. Being the mascot ( 吉祥物 ) fit my personality. I loved getting attention--and a laugh. I didn't have the leg or the speed to play football. But no one could top me when it came to school spirit.
I entered a national high school mascot competition and finished twelfth. When tryouts ( 选拔 ) for Pistol Pete were announced during my first year at university, my academic adviser encouraged me to work hard at the mascot training. Then came the interview with the judges. The main question was, "Why do you want to be Pistol Pete?"
"Because I've been training for this all my life,"I told the judges.
The judges gathered the candidates to announce their decision. They’d selected two students. I could only watch as those two students jumped into the air.
I talked about my dream to my co-workers at my part-time job, and they were behind me 100 percent. When tryouts came the following spring, I was more than ready. Then I stepped before the judges again.
"You know me from last year,"I said. "You know how badly I want this. And you know how good I'd be."I thought it was a done deal that I'd spend my senior year being Pistol Pete, living my dream.

The day was not a self-pity—it was really fun and unforgettable."和续写部分第二段开头语 "After the meeting, Jayce, I learned to accept his disability."
根据第一段开头语中的 really fun,以及原文中的posting videos of his slam dunks, to build Jayce's confidence 等关键词句可构思两人见面时有趣的互动语言,并如特许尚恩教杰斯扣篮,以及鼓励他不要失去自信等;根据原文最后一句中的 they instantly bound it, then 则两人仍保持联系,经常交流的情节等。
The day was not spent on self-pity—it was really fun and unforgettable. They rode bikes around the school's hallways, took photos, and played hide-and-seek. Trashaun taught Jayce how to slam-dunk. He even gave Jayce a shirt as a gift. He talked about their left arms. He told Jayce he was perfect the way he looked. He encouraged him not to let anyone drag him down and shake his confidence.
After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability. He began to understand that there are many people like him. He came to adapt himself to his disability. He recently started practicing shooting basketball every day and he really loves it. Jayce often chats with Trashaun on the Internet about basketball skills as well as some school issues. He is really motivated by this role model and has a positive attitude to his future life. As for Trashaun, he never dreamed that his videos would have such an impact. His relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids.

根据续写部分两段的段落开头语 "Tom noticed the flame was reaching up."和 "Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help."
Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot.,而不是用 "He was very afraid and couldn't move." Jane and Tom's joy was immense.。
Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane’s hand tightly. At that time, both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane's mind. She told them Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs and then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Jane and Tom's joy was immense.

根据续写部分两段的开头语 "He stood up and started to get more and more wood until the sun began to sink."和 "Just after he had thrown down his wood, he heard his mother's weak voice calling him from the next room."
George's mother couldn't contain her joy, tears running down her face,这就比普通的 "She was so happy that she cried."
He stood up and started to get more and more wood until the sun began to sink. George set out for home. Very carefully, he carried his cap filled with the strawberries. He felt delighted as he could have all of his strawberries for his sick mother. The nearer he came to his home, the less he wished to taste them. Then, he arrived home before he knew it.
Just after he had thrown down his wood, he heard his mother's weak voice calling him from the next room. "Is that you, George? I am glad you have come, for I am thirsty and I'm longing for some tea. Could you get some for me?"George ran to her and joyfully offered her all the wild strawberries. Seeing the wild strawberries, George's mother couldn't contain her joy, tears running down her face. She said, "My boy, I know that you didn't taste any of the strawberries and saved all for me. God will bless you for all of this, my son."At that moment, George and his mother were both filled with happiness.

再根据段落开头语 "in a burst of mercy, I went up to him and said,"和 "The girl took down the cake from its stand to make a parcel of it."
He jumped back as if he had been stung, and the blood rushed into his wrinkled face. 。 Kindly pack me up this one here. I will take it with me ,其中 kindly 这个词就充分表现了他 gentleman 的身份。
In a burst of mercy, I went up to him and said, "Pardon me, sir. Will you do me a favor? Let me buy you one of your favorite cakes."He jumped back as if he had been stung, and the blood rushed into his wrinkled face. "Excuse me,"he said with dignity. "I do not believe I have the pleasure of knowing you. Undoubtedly, you have mistaken me for someone else."And with a quick decision he turned to the shop girl and said in a loud voice, "Kindly pack me up this one here. I will take it with me."He pointed at one of the largest and most expensive of the cakes.
The girl took down the cake from its stand to make a parcel of it. So, to save his “honor” he had been forced into a purchase which he could not possibly afford. How I longed for the power to withdraw my tactless words! It was too late though, and I felt that the kindest thing I could do would be walking away. While I was walking out, I could still hear the shop girl tell him to pay at the desk. After that, he was never seen to go there to sample cakes.

But no more helicopters came and it was dark. 和 It was daybreak when Jane woke up,充分发挥想象,大胆预测故事走向。
(Had I not quarreled with Tom, I wouldn't have ),而不是用 She was regretful.
But no more helicopters came and it was dark. Scared and helpless, Jane sat beside a tree, resting her aching feet. Slowly, the sun hid himself behind the mountains, and it was hard to see anything. "Had I not quarreled with Tom, I wouldn't have been here,"she thought regretfully, tears welling up in her eyes. Jane wanted to set out to search for the lake. However, she was worn out. To keep wild animals off, she climbed up a rock to sleep.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. It was a foggy day. Climbing down the rock and following the sound of the stream, she walked toward the water. All of a sudden, she heard someone yelling out her name. To her great joy, it was Tom! He rushed to her and hugged her firmly. Their cry which was full of happiness broke the silence in the forest. Moments later, when the fog was swept by the wind, Jane figured out everything: last night she walked here accidentally. Tom recognized her by the yellow blouse in the morning.

A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.
He told me a helicopter was on its way 可构思直升机到达之后的情节,如夫妇二人如何安全地登上直升机;根据 to photograph polar bears 可构思作者夫妇在获救之后近距离拍摄北极熊照片的情节。

A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Roaring even more angrily this time, he smashed his paws crazily against the wire fence, trying to stab us with his sharp claws. Panicked as we were, Elli and I screamed at the top of our lungs, and waved our fists at him in an attempt to intimidate and scare him away. To our disappointment, all these efforts were in vain. The bear violently dashed against the wooden posts which were
evidently on the verge of collapsing! This furious beast was within a stone's throw, so I flinched back and huddled with Elli tightly.
Chilly winds whipping our faces, I could hear nothing but the sound of our hearts beating violently in our chests.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. The gusting wind from the hovering vehicle swept away our fear immediately. Out of the helicopter descended a rope to pull us up. Thrilled yet relieved, we grabbed the rope and eventually landed on the helicopter safe and sound. While looking at the chunky bear from high above, I was amazed to spot this stubborn guy had crushed the fence and headed toward our camp for the inviting garlic bread. At this once-in-a-lifetime moment, I reached into my backpack and pulled out the camera, photographing that impressive scene. Gazing at his broad back in the melting ice field, I wondered if it was the warmer planet that had forced the bear to hunt for food from the human regions.

With my heartbeat quickening, I grabbed my loaded flare gun… The whole event lasted fifteen minutes but seemed years long.
An Inuit once told me Weapons like a flare gun are necessary
With my heartbeat quickening, I grabbed my loaded flare gun and carefully walked sideways a few steps to Charlie. Without taking my eyes off the bear, I led him to the sled and my hand fastened around his chain. The bear was getting closer. Remembering all the Inuit had told me, I fired a warning shot to the bear's left. But on she came. Then, I fired a flare right in front of her. She stopped and looked at me. Then she fixed her eyes on Charlie, who was. She looked back at her cubs and waited for them to catch up. Finally, she moved away toward my right.
The whole event lasted fifteen minutes but seemed years long. My hands were shaking as I stood still, watching the three slowly move north. But despite the fear, I could feel, deep down, a real satisfaction. I now knew that I could stand up to a bear in the wild and stay calm enough to function and still remember the words from the Inuit. With Charlie's help I had passed my first test.

根据续写部分第一段的开头语 "When I got up to get off the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest." I got noticed by Emily Emily, who brought me courage to start a new friendship
根据第一段开头语中的 my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest 可构思出书包卡在扶手上所造成的一段尴尬场面,以及埃米莉如何帮助作者的情节;根据原文中的 be a friend of hers, singing songs, 以及 too so to come out of my shell 可构思,作者与埃米莉成了朋友,并高兴地唱起歌来,埃米莉对作者的鼓励也使作者、再羞怯。

When I got up to get off the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest. I didn't notice it and stood up with all my strength. Unfortunately, my schoolbag was torn open and all the contents fell off. I knelt down to pick them up. Suddenly, I saw a hand passing me some of the books. I looked up and found it was Emily who was helping me. With her help, I put all the contents back to my schoolbag. I began to talk with her and was surprised to find that we had much in common.
I got noticed by Emily, who brought me courage to start a new friendship! One day when I told her that I admired her and how I wished to be a friend of hers, she said, "We have already been friends."I felt so happy that I even sang a song. Hearing my song, she thought highly of it and asked me to teach her to sing it. She made me realize how unique I was and at last I came out of my shell.

When Anne Glancey,a retired school teacher, received notice from Hamilton Township that she would be fined up toS3,000 per day for code violations(违背)and repairs that needed to be made to her home, she didn't know what to do.She did not have the money to pay for the repairs, and she had no family or friends she could ask for help.
The only two persons she regularly had contact with were her five-year neighbors,Adam and Kristin Polhemus.Anne showed the letter to them and explained that she needed to scrape(刮)and paint her house, remove the abandonedand rusted car in her yard, and cut the grass. These were three violations of the code in total, each with a fine of no morethan S1,000 per day.Anne had grown up in the house, and the letter made her upset. She didn't know what she wasgoing to do and she couldn’t do this herself.“Anne,we'll help you get these fixed,”Adam said.
Kristin posted a call for volunteers to help make repairs and paint Anne's house on Facebook. Her post read asfollows:
Friends in Hamilton! Are you free for a few hours this weekend? We need you!Adam and I could use your help forsome painting at the home of our elderly neighbor,Anne. As you know, she received a heavy fine and she has to scrapeand repaint her home before the deadline to avoid the fine. She has limited funds and the physical ability to do the work, and we'd love nothing more than to show her we care.We really do need your help;we only have a few people rightnow and we're hoping for about 20 volunteers to make this happen.THANK YOU!

根据原文中的 repairs, scrape and paint her house, remove the abandoned and rusted car, cut the grass 可构思志愿者们帮助修理、粉刷房屋,移走废旧生锈的汽车,修整草坪等情节。原文中的 had no family or friends, neighbors, we’d love nothing more than to show her we care 等词句暗示着续写部分应该展现出人们之间相互关爱这一社会美德。

Anne, Adam and Kristin were overjoyed at the response. More than 25 kind neighbors showed up over several weekends to volunteer and donate supplies. The volunteers brought their own supplies and tools, repainted the house and donated the old and rusty unused car to the charity organization. All work was done for free. During the break, Anne made and served homemade orange juice and her family's special carrot cakes to the volunteers. Seeing all the work finished, Anne felt relaxed and was full of gratitude.
Anne decided to do something in return. She spent a whole week preparing a gathering to express thanks to those who offered her the kind help. Then she invited them to come. That day, it was amazing that nearly all the volunteer neighbors came. They talked happily like family members. Before the party ended, Anne presented each with a love card and they took a photo together. Anne posted the photos including these words: When we come together to love and help each other, we can make a difference.

The judges didn't call my name. 和 I added my name to the list one lastime
I left feeling cheated and defeated, lower than I'd ever felt in my life.,也可以用间接描写法,例如在表现学业导师的关怀时,我们可以用关切的语言来展现;“If the pull of being Pistol Pete is still so strong,” he said, “maybe you are meant to try again. But you have to be prepared to accept the judges' decision, no matter what it is.”

The judges didn't call my name. This was supposed to be my turn! I left feeling cheated and defeated, lower than I'd ever felt in my life. I talked with my academic adviser. "If the pull of being Pistol Pete is still so strong,"he said, "maybe you are meant to try again. But you have to be prepared to accept the judges' decision, no matter what it is."
I added my name to the list one last time, went through mascot training again. All that was left was the interview. For a moment, I was puzzled. Then it occurred to me that the judges didn't want to hear about my accomplishments and experience. They wanted to hear from my heart. I took a deep breath and spoke from the heart. "Pistol Pete has attracted me since it was my dream when I was eight years old."Later that day, one of the judges announced, "The Pistol Pete for this year are Steven and Jason."
