High School Programmes in Australia
Beautiful weather, friendly people and a widely varied landscape are just a few of the reasons you should choose to spend time in Australia as a high school student. Here are some programmes you can choose from.
High School Exchange
Individuals studying for a semester or full year in Australia will usually live with a host family. This is a great opportunity for students to see what daily family life is like in Australia. Students learning English will see their language skills improve by communicating with their new friends and host family, while those familiar with the language already can use this opportunity to learn more about the day-to-day life in Australia.
Youth Travel Tours
Travel tours for teens are a wonderful way for high school students to spend a short, concentrated amount of time abroad. Tours are usually for different themes such as cooking, adventure travel, or volunteerism. Students will have a fun, unique experience while incorporating educational components like environmental or cultural studies — and all without missing your normal coursework back home.
Summer Study Programme
For students who only have a few months of the summer break available, an advanced summer programme is perfect. Just keep in mind, the summer of the northern hemisphere (半球) is actually the winter of Australia. Oftentimes these summer programmes can be partnered with universities that will allow students to receive college credits.
1. What can High School Exchange offer?
A. A good command of what we learn at school.
B. A better understanding of Australian culture.
C. A wonderful way to communicate with famous teachers.
D. A precious chance to make friends from different countries.
2. Who may want to choose Youth Travel Tours?
A. Those who have ever been volunteers. B. Those who are interested in cooking.
C. Those who like doing adventure sports. D. Those who want to take a part-time job.
3. Which programme should you choose if you want to earn college credits?
A. Summer Study Programme. B. Youth Travel Tours.
C. High School Exchange. D. All of the programmes.

Jiang Shumei wasn’t educated as a child, learning her first Chinese character at the age of 60. Now, the 87-year-old grandmother is the proud author of six books. She learned her first character in 1996, after her husband died in a car accident, when her daughter Zhang Ailing suggested that she learn to read to take her mind off the loneliness and sorrow.
Zhang says that her mother had her own way of learning. Whenever she came across characters she didn’t know at bus stops or shop signs, she found someone to ask. Once Jiang had learned enough characters, Zhang started giving her books to read. Enjoying the books, Jiang told her daughter that she wanted to write down her own stories to share.
She first put pen to paper in 2012, at the age of 75. It was not easy. Sometimes, completing a single sentence could take a day. Jiang usually started writing at 3 or 4 am, and revised the pieces several times until she was satisfied.
Zhang began publishing her mother’s stories on social media platforms in 2013. When Zhang and her mother drew the attention of Zhang’s writer friends, the pair made a decision to publish them. The first book, Time of Trouble, Time of Poverty, was published later that year, and proved to be a success. Some critics even praised it as the “live history of a nation plagued by tough times”. The book earned Jiang a lot of fans and sympathy.
So far, the elderly woman has published six books, totaling more than 600, 000characters in length. She lives a healthy life, exercising every day, drinking milk and soy milk, as well as having regular exercise. “If I could live as long as 130, would you still say that it is too late for me to start after 60?” she asks, jokingly.

Have you ever wished you could be better organized or more sociable? Perhaps you’re a constant worrier, and you’d prefer to be a little more carefree?
Many surveys show that at least two-thirds of people would like to change some elements of their personality. In the past, such desires appeared to be unachievable. Like the proverbial leopard that could never change its spots, our strengths and weaknesses were believed to be woven into the fabric of our minds.
Recent scientific research, however, proves this expectation of personality’s permanence (持久性) wrong. With the right psychological strategies and enough effort, many people can successfully shape their core personalities into what they desire.
Our genes almost certainly play a role: it’s why people’s personalities often reflect their biological parents’ ones. The influence of our social environment was thought to end in early adulthood, as the brain reached maturity (成熟). If this were true, it wouldn’t be possible to change personality at will. Yet that is exactly what psychology professor Nathan Hudson and his colleagues have shown with a series of groundbreaking studies.
The interventions in their studies typically involve arranging regular activities that reflect the personalities people wish to have. A quiet person who wished to be more outgoing, for example, might have the goal of introducing themselves to a stranger once a week, or making small talk with the cashier at their local supermarket.
The aim is for the thinking patterns and behaviors they generate to become habitual. In the first trial, provided participants (参加者) actually completed those arranged tasks, their personalities changed in the desired direction. Similar exciting results could be seen in a later trial. The differences of participants’ personalities before and after the intervention were still obvious three months after the experiment had ended. As Aristotle argued more than 2,300 years ago, we become what we repeatedly do.
The unexpected plasticity of our minds should be good news for anyone who wishes they were a bit more sociable, organized, or happy-go-lucky. Another potential benefit is that awareness of this research could help improve mental health.
8. Why is “leopard” mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To explain that our minds are made up of strengths and weaknesses.
B. To prove the previous belief that personalities remain fixed.
C. To show the similarity between leopards and human beings.
D. To prove a possibility that people can change their personality.
9. What can be inferred about the “interventions”?
A. The two trials reached different conclusions. B. The purpose is to better people’s personalities.
C. Activities are designed for specific personalities. D. People’s personalities can be changed but can’t last.
10. What has Nathan Hudson’s team shown through their studies?
A. The desire to change some elements of our personality can be achieved.
B. The previous expectation of personality’s permanence was confirmed.
C. Our genes play a greater role in our personality than social environment.
D. The influence of our social environment ends when the brain matures.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. We Are What We Do B. A Leopard Never Changes Its Spots
C. Habits Make Things Easier D. Your Personality Is Not Set In Stone
B 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据第二段“Many surveys show that at least two-thirds of people would like to change some elements of their personality. In the past, such desires appeared to be unachievable. Like the proverbial leopard that could never change its spots, our strengths and weaknesses were believed to be woven into the fabric of our minds. (许多调查显示,至少三分之二的人想要改变他们性格中的某些元素。在过去,这样的愿望似乎是无法实现的。就像那句谚语所说,豹子永远不会改变它的斑点,我们的优缺点被认为是融入我们心灵的结构中的。)”可知,提到豹子是为了佐证过去人们认为性格保持固定不变的观点。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The interventions in their studies typically involve arranging regular activities that reflect the personalities people wish to have. A quiet person who wished to be more outgoing, for example, might have the goal of introducing themselves to a stranger once a week (在他们的研究中,干预通常包括安排反映人们希望拥有的个性的定期活动。例如,一个安静的人想要变得更外向,他的目标可能是每周向陌生人介绍自己一次。)”可知,干预措施中的活动是根据每个人想要改变的具体性格特质来专门设计的。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“If this were true, it wouldn't be possible to change personality at will. Yet that is exactly what psychology professor Nathan Hudson and his colleagues have shown with a series of groundbreaking studies.
D项“Your Personality Is Not Set In Stone (你的性格并非一成不变)”最能概括全文主旨,适合作标题。

While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural networks modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon’s own voice.
When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). The neural networks then produce variations of that music. “Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn’t,” Holly said. So what does music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot? It sounds like music from the future!
But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one exploring AI in composition (作曲). Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The godfather of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz developed EMI — Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it.
AI might not take over the job of the “pop star” anytime soon, or will it? Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated (电脑生成的) artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer. And I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: Can we reproduce creativity using a computer?
Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that mixes human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected.
12. What plays an important role in producing PROTO?
A. Holly’s special voice. B. Holly’s rich knowledge.
C. The input of existing music. D. The use of an instrument.
13. Why does the author mention the example of Miquela Sousa?
A. To show the popularity of smart robots. B. To promote deep thinking on AI musicians.
C. To explain the tasks of computer-generated artists. D. To compare human with robotic artists.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards music co-created by Al and humans?
A. Confident. B. Surprised. C. Confused. D. Doubtful.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The increasing diversity of AI music. B. The mix of AI and musical composition.
C. The history of computer-generated music. D. The development of musical composition.
C 13. B 14. A 15. B
根据第二段“When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). (在制作专辑《PROTO》时,霍莉训练数据集来创作新音乐。这个过程需要输入人类或人工智能创作的音乐数据。)”可知,输入已有音乐数据在制作这张专辑时起到关键作用。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated (电脑生成的) artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer. And I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: Can we reproduce creativity using a computer? (米克拉・索萨是一位虚拟数字艺人,在Instagram上拥有超百万粉丝。米克拉称:“我身兼模特与歌手,而且我是人工智能虚拟人。” 这就引出了一个问题:我们能否借助计算机复刻创造力?)”可知,作者举这个虚拟艺人的例子,是为了引发读者对人工智能音乐人相关问题的深度思考。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that mixes human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected. (我能看到一条前路,人类创意与人工智能交融将迎来创造力的全新曙光。随着音乐与人工智能结合愈发紧密,音乐的新篇章一定会无比精彩。)”可知,作者对人机协同创作音乐抱有信心。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文特别是根据第一段“While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural networks modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon’s own voice. 第二节 阅读七选五 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 冲突
Unique among all the positive emotions, hope requires some degree of conflict, difficulty, negativity, or uncertainty to be ignited (激起). People high in hope are optimistic about their future and believe in possibilities. They see challenges as opportunities to grow and learn, rather than as difficulties. ____16____ Here are tips on how to develop hope.
Set and achieve goals. Without a clear goal, it’s easy to get distracted and lose focus. Hopeful people usually visualize their goals and create conditions that set them up for success. ____17____ Getting three emails out in the next 15 minutes or preparing lunch in the next 20 minutes are simple examples.
Stick with positive people. ____18____ This doesn’t mean being impatient with another person’s difficulties, negativity, or struggles, but it does mean that hopeful people tend to spend more time associating with those who share a bright and proactive attitude. They maintain a healthy balance but don’t get overwhelmed by the negativity around them.
____19____ While believing in oneself is important, highly hopeful people are able to forgive themselves as well. This is a unique combination because this type of confidence allows a person to be imperfect. In addition, they are willing to take reasonable risks and accept failures to support their growth and move forward.
Keep a positive outlook. No matter what life throws at them, they try to see the silver lining. They don’t let the situation determine their emotional response. In addition, high-hope people are also creative problem-solvers. When faced with a challenge, they don’t give up easily. ____20____
A. Be self-reflective and confident.
B. Believe in the power of risks.
C. Being around positive people contributes to keeping optimistic.
D. Instead, they work out solutions that help them get over the difficulties in their way.
E. This is key to the success of many high-hope people.
F. One way this gets done is through achievable micro-goals.
G. Therefore they’re constantly trying to improve themselves and their skill sets.
E 17. F 18. C 19. A 20. D
上文“People high in hope are optimistic about their future and believe in possibilities. They see challenges as opportunities to grow and learn, rather than as difficulties. (充满希望的人对未来持乐观态度,相信可能性。他们将挑战视为成长和学习的机会,而非困难。)”描述了充满希望的人乐观、积极看待挑战的特性,下文“Here are tips on how to develop hope. (以下是培养希望的一些方法。)”提出培养希望的方法,因此E项“This is key to the success of many high-hope people. (这是许多高希望的人成功的关键。)”符合语境,总结这种特性的正向作用,承上启下,引出后续方法。
【17题详解】
上文“Hopeful people usually visualize their goals and create conditions that set them up for success. (充满希望的人通常会设想自己的目标,并创造有利于成功的条件。)”指出高希望的人设想目标并创造条件,下文“Getting three emails out in the next 15 minutes or preparing lunch in the next 20 minutes are simple examples. (在接下来的15分钟内发三封邮件,或在接下来的20分钟内准备午餐,都是简单的例子。)”举例发邮件、准备午餐等微目标,因此F项“One way this gets done is through achievable micro-goals. (实现这一点的一种方式是通过可实现的微目标。)”符合语境,说明实现目标的具体方法,承上启下,下文是对其例证。
【18题详解】
本段主题是“Stick with positive people. (和积极的人在一起。)”,下文“This doesn’t mean being impatient with another person’s difficulties, negativity, or struggles, but it does mean that hopeful people tend to spend more time associating with those who share a bright and proactive attitude. (这并不意味着对别人的困难、消极或挣扎没有耐心,但它确实意味着有希望的人倾向于花更多的时间与那些分享光明和积极态度的人交往。)”进一步解释这种相处方式的具体表现,因此C项“Being around positive people contributes to keeping optimistic. (与积极的人在一起有助于保持乐观。)”符合语境,概括与积极的人相处的正向作用,承上启下。
【19题详解】
下文“While believing in oneself is important, highly hopeful people are able to forgive themselves as well. This is a unique combination because this type of confidence allows a person to be imperfect. In addition, they are willing to take reasonable risks and accept failures to support their growth and move forward. (虽然相信自己很重要,但充满希望的人同样能够原谅自己。这种特质具有独特性,因为这类自信让人能够接受不完美。此外,他们愿意承担合理的风险,并坦然面对失败,以促进自身成长并不断前进。)”强调自信与自我原谅的结合,以及愿意冒险,因此A项“Be self-reflective and confident. (自我反思和自信。)”符合语境,其中“自我反思”对应原谅自己的行为,“自信”对应相信自己的能力,可作为段首句统领全段内容,且与其他段首句一样使用祈使句的形式。
【20题详解】
上文“In addition, high-hope people are also creative problem-solvers. When faced with a challenge, they don’t give up easily. (此外,抱有高希望的人也善于创造性地解决问题。面对挑战时,他们不会轻易放弃。)”指出高希望的人不轻易放弃,因此D项“Instead, they work out solutions that help them get over the difficulties in their way. (相反,他们想出解决方案来帮助他们克服困难。)”符合语境,以“相反”转折,具体说明他们积极寻找解决方案,与“不放弃”形成递进关系。

Dear Peter,
I’m so sorry to hear that you were criticized by your Chinese teacher. I know how sad you must feel right now. But please don’t be too hard on yourself. What really matters is that you want to learn Chinese well.
Here is my advice about AI-assisted learning. You can use AI to check grammar which you are not sure about, but you should always do the homework by yourself first. What I suggest is that you compare your translation with AI's output and learn from the differences. In this way, AI becomes your helper, not your replacement.
I hope you will feel better soon. Keep trying!
