Massimo Bottura, a three-Michelin-Starred chef, has extended his culinary(烹饪的) empire globally. However, he says that the peak of all of his achievements is Milan’s Refettorio Ambrosiano and the following 12 global branches.
At Refettorio Ambrosiano, dinner guests are greeted by name. They dine on fine china at tables created by the country’s most sought-after furniture designers. The waiters are polite, and the chefs have been trained under the finest restaurateurs in the world. The set menu changes every day, depending on what comes in with the morning’s delivery.
This morning’s delivery contains dry arugula(芝麻菜), chicken close to its sell-by date and too-ugly-to-be-sold oranges. By dinner, however, the supermarket castoffs have been transformed into a three-course meal. The 100 or so diners — refugees, the homeless, and the unemployed — enjoy the meal with obvious pleasure, laughing with the volunteer waiters, praising the volunteer chefs, and forgetting, at least for an hour, the challenges of a life lived on the streets.
The brightest gems in Bottura’s culinary empire are not restaurants at all. He thinks of them as spaces that shine a light on the dignity of their guests while focusing attention on the food-waste problem by turning foods that were otherwise going to be headed toward rubbish bins into Michelin Guide-worthy meals.
Botura first thought of Refettorio Ambrosiano as a pop-up concept for the 2015 World Expo in Milan. The organizers had invited him to cook for the grand opening. Bottura proposed something different. He wanted to invite the world’s best chefs to cook with him for the city’s homeless, using leftovers. That idea soon got supported and turned into something more permanent.
Today, the Refettorio is “a movement,” Bottura says. “It is a model for fighting food waste and isolation on the front lines. And it starts by looking at an old carrot or a piece of hard bread and catching sight of gold.”
24. How do the Refettorio Ambrosianos differ from Bottura’s other restaurants?
A. The waiters are well-trained.
B. The tables are custom-made.
C. They are three-Michelin-starred.
D. Daily delivery decides the set menu.
25. Which of the following best describes the event at Refettorio Ambrosiano?
A. An evening gathering for local chefs. B. A charity sale of supermarket castoffs
C. A wealthy meal for the less-fortunate. D. A volunteer training for the homeless
26. What does Bottura think of the Refettorio?
A. It’s his best profitable restaurant.
B. It’s a good project for food safety.
C. It’s a pop-up concept to extend his business.
D. It’s win-win for the environment and society.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Less Waste, More Taste. B. A Dinner of Dignity
C. Best Restaurant, Best Service. D. The Power of Food
D 25. C 26. D 27. A
根据第二段中“The set menu changes every day, depending on what comes in with the morning’s delivery.(套餐每天都在变化,这取决于早上送来的是什么。)”
根据第三段中“The 100 or so diners — refugees, the homeless, and the unemployed — enjoy the meal with obvious pleasure, laughing with the volunteer waiters, praising the volunteer chefs, and forgetting, at least for an hour, the challenges of a life lived on the streets.(大约100名用餐者,包括难民、无家可归者和失业者,享受着这顿美餐,他们与志愿服务员一起大笑,称赞志愿者厨师,至少在一个小时内,他们忘记了街头生活的挑战。)”
根据最后一段“Today, the Refettorio is “a movement,” Bottura says. “It is a model for fighting food waste and isolation on the front lines. And it starts by looking at an old carrot or a piece of hard bread and catching sight of gold.”(今天,Refettorio是一场“运动”,Bottura 说。“这是在第一线与食品浪费和隔离作斗争的一个模式。它开始于看着一根老胡萝卜或一块硬面包,然后看到金子。”)”和上文提到的Refettorio为难民、无家可归者和失业者提供大餐可推知,Refettorio对环境和社会都是双赢的。故选D。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“However, he says that the peak of all of his achievements is Milan’s Refettorio Ambrosiano and the following 12 global branches.(然而,他说他最大的成就是米兰的Refettorio Ambrosiano和接下来的12个全球分支机构。)”,第三段“This morning’s delivery contains dry arugula(芝麻菜), chicken close to its sell-by date and too-ugly-to-be-sold oranges. By dinner, however, the supermarket castoffs have been transformed into a three-course meal. The 100 or so diners — refugees, the homeless, and the unemployed — enjoy the meal with obvious pleasure, laughing with the volunteer waiters, praising the volunteer chefs, and forgetting, at least for an hour, the challenges of a life lived on the streets.(今天早上送来的货包括接近保质期的干芝麻菜鸡和难看到不能卖的橙子。然而,到了晚餐时,超市里丢弃的食物已经变成了三道菜的大餐。大约100名用餐者,包括难民、无家可归者和失业者,享受着这顿美餐,他们与志愿服务员一起大笑,称赞志愿厨师,至少在一个小时内,他们忘记了街头生活的挑战。)”和第四段中“He thinks of them as spaces that shine a light on the dignity of their guests while focusing attention on the food-waste problem by turning foods that were otherwise going to be headed toward rubbish bins into Michelin Guide-worthy meals.(他认为这是一个照亮客人尊严的空间,同时关注食物浪费问题,把本来要被扔进垃圾桶的食物变成米其林指南中值得一吃的食物。)”
C
We’ve all been there: taking a sudden, unsteady slide on ice under our boots, feeling car tires spin uselessly, or gliding effortlessly on skates. But why is ice so annoyingly slippery? This everyday mystery has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years. A team led by Martin Müser at Germany’s Saarland University has figured out the code with a fascinating new explanation that fundamentally challenges our conventional understanding.
The secret lies in water molecules’ (分子) odd personality: they’re “dipoles (偶极子)” — like tiny, uneven magnets (磁铁), with one end carrying a faint positive charge and the other a gentle negative charge. When water freezes into ice, these molecular magnets lock into place like perfectly ranked soldiers, forming a crisp, orderly crystal structure. But this neat arrangement is surprisingly fragile — something the team’s detailed computer models revealed.
Picture this: when your boot sole (鞋底) or a skate blade presses against ice, the dipoles in that surface act like a magnet, grasping the top layer of ice molecules. With a gentle drag, they pull those molecules out of their tight formation — a chaotic process the researchers playfully named “frustration.” Unlike regular melting, which needs heat or heavy pressure to turn ice to water, these “frustrated” molecules melt without a single degree of extra warmth. They turn into a super-thin, slippery liquid layer that sticks to the ice — even in bone-chilling temperatures — turning the surface into a temporary slip-and-slide.
The team also drew a fun comparison to diamond: this sparkly crystal can also get slippery thanks to similar molecular bugs, but there’s a key twist. “For ice, the harder you push, the easier it gets to turn it into a liquid-like thing,” as researchers put it. So more pressure makes it slipperier and leaves scratches. Diamond? It does the opposite: pressure tightens its surface, protecting it from damage. In theory, you could lace up skates on a diamond rink (溜冰场) and glide away, without leaving a single mark behind.
So, What’s the best way to beat slippery ice this winter? Müser has a no-nonsense solution: “Put on cleats (防滑钉鞋) — that’s really the only way.” Thanks to this new look at how ice molecules behave, we can finally understand why it’s so tricky to walk on and stay one step ahead of those unexpected slides.
28. What makes water molecules form an orderly crystal structure when frozen?
A. Their ability to absorb heat in cold conditions.
B. The pressure from the surrounding environment.
C. Their tendency to avoid contact with other molecules.
D. Their magnetic behavior from opposite electric charges.
29. Which of the following best explains the process of “frustration”?
A. Ice molecules are heated into water quickly.
B. Heavy pressure breaks ice crystals into pieces.
C. External dipoles pull ice surface molecules out of their formation.
D. Ice molecules lose their electric charges when touching other surfaces.
30. What is the key difference between slippery ice and slippery diamond?
A. Diamond’s surface becomes slippery only at extremely low temperatures.
B. Ice is more likely to turn into a liquid-like substance under pressure.
C. Diamond’s crystal structure is more fragile than that of ice.
D. Ice can be made non-slippery by using cleats, while diamond cannot.
31. What’s the reason for Martin Müser’s conducting this research?
A. Exploring the principle behind the slipperiness of ice.
B. Comparing the properties of ice and diamond.
C. Explaining the history of the research on ice’s slipperiness.
D. Providing advice on how to avoid slipping on ice.
D 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第二段“The secret lies in water molecules’ (分子) odd personality: they’re “dipoles (偶极子)” — like tiny, uneven magnets (磁铁), with one end carrying a faint positive charge and the other a gentle negative charge. When water freezes into ice, these molecular magnets lock into place like perfectly ranked soldiers, forming a crisp, orderly crystal structure. (秘密在于水分子的奇特特性:它们是“偶极子”——就像微小的不均匀磁铁,一端带有微弱的正电荷,另一端带有微弱的负电荷。当水冻结成冰时,这些分子磁铁像排列整齐的士兵一样锁定位置,形成清晰、有序的晶体结构)”可知,水分子因正负电荷产生的磁性行为使其冻结时形成有序的晶体结构。故选D项。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段“Picture this: when your boot sole (鞋底) or a skate blade presses against ice, the dipoles in that surface act like a magnet, grasping the top layer of ice molecules. With a gentle drag, they pull those molecules out of their tight formation — a chaotic process the researchers playfully named “frustration.”(想象一下:当你的鞋底或冰刀压在冰面上时,冰面上的偶极子就像磁铁一样,抓住冰面分子最上层。轻轻一拉,它们就把这些分子从紧密的排列中拉出来——研究人员戏称这一混乱过程为“受挫”)”可知,“受挫”过程是外部偶极子将冰面分子拉出原有排列。故选C项。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段““For ice, the harder you push, the easier it gets to turn it into a liquid-like thing,” as researchers put it. So more pressure makes it slipperier and leaves scratches. Diamond? It does the opposite: pressure tightens its surface, protecting it from damage. (正如研究人员所说,“对于冰来说,你推得越用力,就越容易把它变成类似液体的东西。”因此,更大的压力会使它更滑,并留下划痕。钻石?它的作用正好相反:压力会收紧其表面,保护其免受损坏)”可知,冰在压力下更易变成类液体物质,而钻石则相反。故选B项。
31.细节理解题。根据第一段“But why is ice so annoyingly slippery? This everyday mystery has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years. A team led by Martin Müser at Germany’s Saarland University has figured out the code with a fascinating new explanation that fundamentally challenges our conventional understanding. (但为什么冰会如此恼人地滑呢?这个日常之谜困扰了科学家数百年。德国萨尔兰大学马丁·缪瑟领导的一个团队通过一个引人入胜的新解释破解了这一密码,从根本上挑战了我们传统的理解)”以及后文对冰滑原因的详细解释可知,本文主要介绍了科学家对冰滑原因的新解释,研究目的是探索冰面光滑背后的原理。故选A项。
D
By 2050, the United Nations says, we’re going to need 70 percent more food to feed the nine billion people living on Earth. Sara Menker says the problem may be even more urgent than the U.N. suggests. In 2017, she gave a TED talk in which she said a “tipping point,” beyond which global food markets become too overloaded to function effectively, could come in just a few years.
“We discovered that the world will be short 214×1012 calories by 2027,” she said. Or, in more familiar terms: “A single Big Mac has 563 calories. That means the world will be short 380 billion Big Macs in 2027. That is more Big Macs than McDonald’s has ever produced.”
Menker cannot change the world alone. But the firm she started, Gro Intelligence, is providing information that food companies, insurers, lenders and policymakers use to make food production more effective, and perhaps help protect against that tipping point.
Gro tracks 650×1012 data points daily — from sources such as government and local food reports, satellite photos, long-term weather forecasts and greenhouse gas measurements — and creates computer models so that food companies, such as Unilever and Yum! Brands, can know how prices are likely to trend, calculate surpluses (过剩) and shortages, and be more flexible when climate change makes food supplies harder to predict.
A type of artificial intelligence known as machine learning is key to dealing with the data because, as Allison Tepley of Gro’s staff put it, “The best information is often local information, but it’s often in local languages, in different forms and it all needs to be put together.”
Gro has sounded warmings on African swine fever in China (which cut pork production 30 percent in 2018), locust infestation in East Africa in 2020 and global inflation (通货膨胀) in food prices.
32. What is the problem mentioned by Menker?
A. Food shortage. B. Overloaded markets.
C. Overpopulation. D. Wrong prediction by the U.N.
33. What does Menker mean by her words in paragraph 2?
A. The problem is serious. B. Her discovery is more accurate.
C. Big Macs contain too many calories. D. McDonald’s should increase productivity.
34. What does Gro do to help food companies?
A. Get resources. B. Monitor greenhouse gases.
C. Analyse big data. D. Assess surpluses and shortages.
35. What might the underlined words “locust infestation” be in the last paragraph?
A. A data-driven drug. B. A language-based approach.
C. A food-related disaster. D. A production-centered policy.
A 33. A 34. C 35. C

In 2017, she gave a TED talk in which she said a “tipping point,” beyond which global food markets become too overloaded to function effectively, could come in just a few years.(Sara Menker说,这个问题可能比联合国所说的更加紧迫。 故选A。
根据第二段“We discovered that the world will be short 214×1012 calories by 2027,” …“A single Big Mac has 563 calories. That means the world will be short 380 billion Big Macs in 2027. That is more Big Macs than McDonald’s has ever produced.(我们发现,到2027年,世界将减少214×1012卡路里的热量,”……“一个巨无霸含有563卡路里。这意味着2027年全世界将短缺3800亿个巨无霸。这比麦当劳生产的巨无霸还要多。)”可知,Sara Menker精确的数字、熟悉的术语来说明这个问题非常严重。故选A。
根据第三段“Gro tracks 650×1012 data points daily…and creates computer models so that food companies…can know how prices are likely to trend, calculate surpluses (过剩) and shortages, and be more flexible when climate change makes food supplies harder to predict.(Gro每天……跟踪650×1012个数据点,并创建计算机模型以便……食品公司可以了解价格的趋势,计算盈余和短缺,并在气候变化导致食品供应难以预测时更加灵活。)”可知,Gro的做法是分析大数据。故选C。
35.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Gro has sounded warmings on African swine fever in China (which cut pork production 30 percent in 2018), locust infestation in East Africa in 2020 and global inflation (通货膨胀) in food prices. (中国的非洲猪瘟(2018年导致猪肉产量减少30%)、2020年东非的 locust infestation 以及全球食品价格通胀等问题都引发了升温。)”可推知,locust infestation与African swine fever (非洲猪瘟)和global inflation in food prices(全球食品价格通胀)并列,故画线短语“locust infestation”应该也是指与粮食有关的疾病。故选C。

Is Deep Reading Still Necessary in the Digital Age?
In today’s digital age, most teenagers are used to fragmented reading. They spend hours scrolling through social media, reading short posts or watching videos, but rarely do they engage in deep reading of books or long articles.
In my view, deep reading is still of great importance. It helps us develop critical thinking and improve our ability to concentrate. More importantly, it allows us to understand complex ideas and reflect on life more deeply. Without it, our minds would become shallow.
Therefore, I believe we should balance digital reading with deep reading to grow into thoughtful individuals.

Luke, a quiet and shy senior high school student in my class, had long been trapped in a state of deep inferiority and an acute lack of self-confidence. Terrified of taking the initiative to communicate or make friends with his classmates, he always kept himself distant from all forms of social activities. Caught in endless anxiety, he was firmly convinced that the moment he spoke up or showed himself in public, he would be laughed at, looked down upon and judged coldly by others.
Luke actually possessed a well-hidden yet remarkable talent, which was unknown to almost all his classmates. Having practiced barbecuing with his father since childhood, he had gained solid and proficient grilling skills, fully capable of making delicious barbecue food.
Last week, when I announced that we would have a barbecue picnic outdoors that weekend, all classmates cheered and signed up excitedly at once except Luke. He lowered his head in silence, drowned in deep hesitation. As usual, his first reaction was to stay alone at home so as to avoid any awkward social interaction.
Noticing his tendency to escape from social situations, I had a patient and sincere talk with him after class, encouraging him to regard this gathering as a precious opportunity to step out of his closed inner world. After a fierce mental struggle throughout the night, Luke finally plucked up all his courage and made up his mind to take part in the activity bravely.
On the day of the activity, Luke arrived at the spot. Standing awkwardly away from the noisy crowd, he was too timid to take a single step forward to join in anyone’s conversation.

Just then, many classmates complained that no one could get the work done well. No one seemed to know how to properly light the charcoal or control the heat, and the raw ingredients lay untouched in a mess. At that moment, Luke, though still nervous, gathered his courage and stepped forward hesitantly, murmuring, “Could I have a try?” Without waiting for a reply, he skillfully lit the charcoal, arranged the ingredients neatly, and brushed sauce evenly over the food, his every move smooth and confident.
Before long, the pleasant smell of barbecue filled the air. The golden-brown grilled meat and vegetables looked incredibly tempting, winning cheers from all classmates. Everyone crowded around Luke, applauding his amazing grilling skills. Bathed in warm praise, Luke felt a sense of pride welling up inside him. Gradually, he began to talk with others naturally, a brilliant smile spreading across his face. Never had he felt so confident, for he finally understood that courage and self-belief are the very keys to stepping out of the closed inner world and embracing a brighter self.
