Every morning before sunrise, Zain starts his patrol along the muddy shores of the mangrove forest in southern Malaysia. As a mangrove ranger, his job is to protect this unique coastal ecosystem. For Zain, this is not just a job; it’s a duty passed down from his father.
The work of a ranger is physically demanding and solitary. Zain walks for hours through knee-deep water, under the thick canopy of trees. He checks for signs of illegal logging, monitors the health of the trees, and records any unusual changes in the water. The silence is broken only by the calls of birds and the soft sound of his boots in the mud. He knows every creek and every tree like the back of his hand.
One afternoon, Zain noticed fresh cuts on several young trees — a sign of illegal activity. He followed the faint footprints and soon found a man gathering wood. Instead of shouting, Zain approached calmly. He explained how each cut tree weakens the forest’s defense against storms. The man, looking ashamed, put down his axe. “They are not just trees,” Zain said softly. “They are walls that protect our homes.” The man nodded silently and left, promising not to return.
Sitting on a root at the end of the day, Zain felt a deep satisfaction. He knew his work was vital. These mangrove forests were more than a workplace. They acted as a natural shield, reducing the power of waves and winds during storms and protecting the villages behind them. They were also rich nurseries for fish, supporting the livelihood of local fishermen. As the sun set, painting the sky in orange and purple, Zain smiled. His quiet watch continued, guarding the green wall between the sea and the land.
19.What is Zain’s job?
A.A fisherman. B.A scientist. C.A mangrove ranger. D.A village teacher.
20.What is a main feature of Zain’s work according to paragraph 2?
A.Highly paid and exciting. B.Physically demanding and solitary.
C.Focused on planting new trees. D.Full of team meetings and cooperation.
21.What does the word “They” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The roots Zain sat on. B.The man’s promises.
C.The mangrove forests. D.The local fishermen’s boats.
22.What is one important function of protecting the mangroves?
A.They provide wood for building houses. B.They attract many tourists for sightseeing.
C.They serve as a natural defense against storms. D.They are mainly used for scientific research.

Beneath the surface of oceans lie coral reefs. Often called the “rainforests of the sea,” these underwater structures cover less than 0.1 percent of the ocean floor but support more than 25 percent of all marine species. Countless creatures depend on coral reefs for food, shelter, and a place to reproduce.
One of the most fascinating things about coral reefs is the symbiotic (共生的) relationships. A typical example of this partnership is between coral polyps — the tiny animals that build coral reefs — and symbiotic algae (藻类) called zooxanthellae. The algae live inside the polyps and use sunlight to make food. In return, the polyps provide the algae with protection and nutrients. This partnership gives coral reefs their bright colors and helps them grow healthily and quickly.
But coral reefs are in trouble. Global warming is causing ocean temperatures to rise, which leads to coral bleaching (白化). When water gets too warm, coral polyps lost their color and their main food source. If the heat lasts too long, the coral dies. Pollution is another threat: chemicals from farms, plastic waste, and oil spills can damage coral and kill the creatures that live there. Overfishing also harms reefs by removing important species that keep the ecosystem balanced and functional.
Scientists estimate that nearly half of the world’s coral reefs have already ruined, and without action, more could be lost in the next 20 years. But there is hope. Marine biologists are working to grow coral in labs and then plant it in damaged reefs. Governments are creating marine reserves where fishing and other harmful activities are banned. And individuals can help too: by reducing carbon emissions, using sunscreen that doesn’t contain chemicals harmful to coral, and supporting organizations that protect reefs. Everyone’s effort counts in reef protection.
Coral reefs are more than just beautiful underwater landscapes — they’re vital to the health of our planet. As we learn more about these hidden wonders, it’s clear that saving them is one of the most important environmental goals of our time. Losing them would break ocean balance and threaten human well-being deeply.
23.What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A.Reefs occupy a tiny ocean area. B.Reefs harm marine biodiversity.
C.Oceans floor mainly consists of reefs. D.Marine species totally rely on reefs.
24.How does the author illustrate symbiotic relationships in paragraph 2?
A.By listing data. B.By giving examples.
C.By analyzing effects. D.By making comparisons.
25.What causes coral’s death according to the text?
A.Removing fish supplies. B.Growing laboratory coral.
C.Increasing marine animals. D.Rising ocean temperatures.
26.What is the author’s attitude toward saving reefs?
A.Doubtful. B.Hesitant. C.Hopeful. D.Tolerant.
D
The ocean may appear boundless. It’s easy to imagine that fish and other ocean creatures swim freely without restriction. That assumption, however, is mistaken. According to ecologist Karissa Lear, many ocean species stick to specific habitats and seldom go beyond them. This habit can cause unexpectedly big problems, especially when human-built structures get in the way.
Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in Western Australia. In 2017, a large structure was built by the shore, stretching about 550 yards into the sea. As Lear had feared, the construction did harm the critically endangered green sawfish — they were unable to pass around the barrier. To Lear, this discovery supported a surprising new idea that ocean animals, much like land species, need a helping hand getting around human-built structures.
On land, wildlife crossings are becoming more common. Green bridges, for instance, help bears and elk avoid a road in Canada’s Banff National Park. In 2022, a wildlife crossing in Washington State was used more than 5,000 times by animals such as deer and coyotes. Although the bridges are already popular on land, Lear says little attention has been paid to the idea of wildlife crossings designed to help ocean animals get around safely.
For ocean animals, too many barriers can cut them off from important feeding sites. Overly limited movement can lead to the development of isolated groups that are more likely to go extinct. With more large structures planned for the Ashburton River area, Lear says the cumulative (累积的) effect of multiple barriers is a real concern for the green sawfish’s future.
As the climate continues to change, paying attention to the needs of ocean animals is important. Many are moving farther north, and they need suitable habitats to move through. To address this, we can create crossings through human-built structures or protect habitats along their migration routes. As we continue to engineer the ocean, such efforts could go a long way toward protecting ocean life.
27.How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A.By detailing research findings. B.By describing a natural scene.
C.By addressing public concerns. D.By challenging a common belief.
28.What effect did the structure near the Ashburton River have?
A.It provided a new habitat for ocean life. B.It blocked the path of the green sawfish.
C.It attracted more new species to the area. D.It drove the green sawfish into deep waters.
29.What does Lear imply about wildlife crossings?
A.They have reduced road accidents on land. B.They will replace ocean barriers eventually.
C.They have destroyed land animals’ habitats. D.They are urgently needed for ocean animals.
30.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Wildlife Crossings: From Land to Sea B.The Ocean Where Life Is in Danger
C.The Sawfish That Lost Their Way Home D.Ocean Structures: No Harm Done

As environmental concerns grow, having an environmentally friendly home is becoming increasingly important to many people. 31 ? Here are some practical steps you can take.
Replace old equipment
Older equipment tends to consume more energy than newer models. Any equipment will get older. 32 . High-efficiency equipment can significantly impact energy usage and, during a remodel, may provide extra space since their sizes are getting smaller and smaller.
Fix energy-efficient windows
33 . However, if you have single-pane (单层玻璃) windows or if there are noticeable signs of damage, fixing energy-efficient windows can save you money in the long run. The most energy-efficient windows feature double or more panes of glass with inert (惰性的) gas between the panes.
34
About half of a home’s total energy usage goes toward heating and cooling. Fixing a smart thermostat can help you adjust the times you have your heating or cooling running according to a pre-set schedule, which can help you cut energy bills. According to a study, a smart thermostat can reduce your heating and cooling bills by up to 8%.
Switch to solar energy
Solar technology generates electricity from sunlight without producing pollution or greenhouse gases, helping homeowners save on the costs of water and electricity. You can fix solar panels on your roof. One benefit you can get is to make the solar panels perfectly integrate with your home. 35 . This is a great way to benefit both yourself and the environment.
A.Consider smart home climate control.
B.Reduce household energy consumption.
C.Replacing windows can be quite expensive.
D.The best way is to replace them before they fail.
E.And the other is to reduce your daily energy usage.
F.Do you want to make your own home more eco-friendly?
G.Have you created an eco-friendly home to make you suitable.

Last weekend, a group of high-school students, including Tom, Sarah, and their friends, participated in an environmental protection activity at a nearby river. The activity was organized by their school’s environmental club to raise awareness about water pollution and encourage people to take action to protect the river.
When they arrived at the riverbank, they were shocked by what they saw. The river was filled with all kinds of garbage, from plastic bottles to old tires. The water was dark and smelly, and there were hardly any signs of aquatic life. Tom frowned and said, “This is even worse than we thought. We really need to do something to save this river.”
The students immediately got to work. They divided themselves into groups. One group started to pick up the garbage along the riverbank, using long-handled tools to reach the trash floating in the water. Another group went around to the nearby factories and shops, distributing brochures about environmental protection and explaining the importance of not polluting the river. Sarah was in charge of taking pictures and recording videos to document the situation and their efforts.
As they were working, a middle-aged man walked by. He looked at the students with curiosity and asked, “What are you kids doing?” Tom stepped forward and replied, “Sir, we’re trying to clean up this river. It’s in a really bad state, and we want to make people aware of the problem.” The man nodded, but then he said, “Do you really think a few kids like you can make a difference? This pollution has been going on for years.” Tom was a bit discouraged by his words, but he still firmly said, “We have to try. Every little bit helps, right?” The man just shrugged and walked away. After a long day of hard work, the riverbank looked much cleaner. However, they knew that this was just a small step, and there was still a long way to go to fully restore the river’s health...

A.Doubtful. B.Hesitant. C.Hopeful. D.Tolerant.

【答案】27.D 28.B 29.D 30.A
【导语】文章主要讲述了海洋动物也需要野生动物通道来克服人类建筑障碍。
【详解】27.推理判断题。根据第一段中“It’s easy to imagine that fish and other ocean creatures swim freely without restriction. That assumption, however, is mistaken.(人们很容易认为海洋生物可以无拘无束畅游,但这种想法是错误的)”可知,作者通过质疑大众普遍的固有观点引出话题。
28.细节理解题。根据第二段中“In 2017, a large structure was built by the shore, stretching about 550 yards into the sea. As Lear had feared, the construction did harm the critically endangered green sawfish — they were unable to pass around the barrier.(2017年,岸边修建了一座大型设施,向海中延伸约550码。正如利尔所担忧的,该工程对极度濒危的绿锯鳐造成了危害,它们无法绕过这道屏障)”可知,这座人工设施阻挡了绿锯鳐的通行路径。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Lear says little attention has been paid to the idea of wildlife crossings designed to help ocean animals get around safely.(利尔表示用于帮助海洋生物安全通行的海洋通道构想,至今极少受到关注)”可知,Lear暗示海洋生物迫切需要专属的生物通行通道。
30.主旨大意题。文章先介绍陆地生物通道的普及,再类比提出海洋生物同样需要通行通道,以此保护海洋生物生存繁衍。全文核心为生物通道从陆地延伸至海洋。“Wildlife Crossings: From Land to Sea(野生动物通道:从陆地走向海洋)”为最佳标题。

【答案】31.F 32.D 33.C 34.A 35.E
【导语】这篇文章主要介绍了四种打造环保家居的实用方法:更换老旧设备、安装节能窗户、使用智能温控设备以及改用太阳能。
【详解】31.上文“As environmental concerns grow, having an environmentally friendly home is becoming increasingly important to many people.(随着环保意识的增强,对许多人来说,拥有一个环保型住宅变得越来越重要。)”提出“环保家居越来越重要”,下文“Here are some practical steps you can take.(以下是一些你可以采取的实际措施。)”直接给出“实用建议”,因此空格处应为引出话题的疑问句。F选项“Do you want to make your own home more eco-friendly?( 您是否希望让自己的家更加环保?)”完美衔接上下文,自然过渡到下文的建议。
32.本段主题是“Replace old equipment(更换旧设备)”。上文“Older equipment tends to consume more energy than newer models. Any equipment will get older.(旧设备通常比新设备耗能更多。所有设备都会随着时间推移而老化。)”说“旧设备耗能更高,任何设备都会老化”,下文“High-efficiency equipment can significantly impact energy usage and, during a remodel, may provide extra space since their sizes are getting smaller and smaller.(高效节能设备能显著降低能源消耗,在翻新时,由于其尺寸越来越小,还能提供额外的空间。)”讲“高效设备的优势”,因此空格处应说明如何处理老化设备。D选项“The best way is to replace them before they fail.(最好的方法是在它们坏掉之前更换它们。)”承上启下,既回应了“设备老化” 的问题,又为后文介绍高效设备做铺垫。
33.下文“However, if you have single-pane (单层玻璃) windows or if there are noticeable signs of damage, fixing energy-efficient windows can save you money in the long run.(然而,如果你的窗户是单窗格的,或者有明显的损坏迹象,从长远来看,安装节能窗户可以节省你的钱。)”出现转折词 “However”,表明前后语义相反。提到“从长远来看,安装节能窗户能省钱”,因此空格处应指出安装节能窗户的缺点。C 选项“Replacing windows can be quite expensive.(更换窗户可能相当昂贵。)”与后文“省钱”形成鲜明转折,逻辑通顺。
34.空格处是小标题,需概括本段核心内容。本段下文“About half of a home’s total energy usage goes toward heating and cooling. Fixing a smart thermostat can help you adjust the times you have your heating or cooling running according to a pre-set schedule, which can help you cut energy bills.( 家庭总能耗中约有一半用于供暖和制冷。安装智能温控器可以帮助你根据预设时间自动调节供暖或制冷设备的运行,从而帮助降低能源费用。)”主要介绍“智能恒温器可自动调节供暖和制冷时间,从而降低能耗和账单”,核心是通过智能设备控制家居气候。A选项“Consider smart home climate control(考虑智能家居气候控制)”精准概括本段主旨,适合作为该段小标题。
35.上文“You can fix solar panels on your roof. One benefit you can get is to make the solar panels perfectly integrate with your home.(你可以在屋顶上安装太阳能电池板。你可以得到的一个好处是使太阳能电池板与你的家完美地结合在一起。)”说“安装太阳能电池板的一个好处是能与房屋完美融合”,使用了“One benefit”,因此空格处应承接“另一个好处”。E选项 “And the other is to reduce your daily energy usage.(另一个是减少你日常的能源使用。)”

That night, Tom couldn’t fall asleep. He kept thinking about the man’s words and the current situation of the river. Suddenly, an idea struck him. He decided to create an online platform to raise more awareness about the river’s pollution problem. The next day, he shared his idea with Sarah and their friends. Everyone was excited about it and started to contribute. They collected more data about the river’ pollution. They also uploaded all the pictures and videos Sarah had taken during the activity. Soon, their online platform attracted a lot of attention, with many people expressing their support.
A few weeks later, the students organized a follow-up activity. This time, more people joined them, including some of the factory owners who had received their brochures before. The man who had doubted them also showed up. He walked up to Tom and said, “I was wrong. You kids have really made a difference.” With more hands on deck, they not only cleaned the riverbank again but also started a tree-planting project along the river. The river was gradually showing signs of recovery, and the students knew that their continuous efforts were paying off.
