In Chinese, “pao” means “to toss”.In ancient times, xiuqiu was used to symbolize love.If a girl made an embroidery ball by hand and gave it to a boy, it meant that she had given her heart to him.If a girl sought her fated partner, she’d toss the xiuqiu high among boys. The boy who caught it would be her future husband.Nowadays, xiuqiu tossing is a traditional game in festivals marking the blooming season or harvest time. There are various ways of playing this game. One way is for two teams, usually boys versus girls, to toss the silk balls at each other. If the ball drops, the losing side must sing or perform as a punishment.

(2025·长沙长郡中学模拟)When the Qingming Festival, or Tomb Sweeping Day, approaches each spring, one particular delicacy begins to appear in supermarkets and bakeries all over the country: qingtuan, a sweet, jade-colored treat eaten to commemorate the dead.
“In Chinese culture, it’s really important that, as you go through life, you always honor and remember your ancestors,” said Lillian Luk, the Shanghai-born-and-raised founder of the London pop-up Shanghai Supper Club.During the Qingming Festival, people all over China embark on pilgrimages to their deceased loved ones’ burial sites to sweep the graves, burn incense and present offerings.
These green dumplings are now popular all over the country, but they originally hailed from eastern China’s coastal Jiangnan region, which includes Shanghai and parts of surrounding provinces like Jiangsu and Zhejiang.Rice plantations flourish in this area, and the crop’s abundance explains the regional popularity of rice-based treats, from ci fan tuan (sticky rice enveloping fried dough) to nuo mi ou (lotus root stuffed with sticky rice).
Made with glutinous rice flour, qingtuan dough is emerald-green because of the addition of mugwort, a fragrant herb that imparts a grassy aroma and is best picked in spring.“Mugwort also gives the qingtuan a nice medicinal benefit. It’s meant to lower blood pressure,” said Luk, who now makes and sells the verdant treats at her pop-up restaurant when the Qingming Festival rolls around.
In recent years, Luk has observed qingtuan evolving, with variations from dumplings dyed green with matcha to ones filled with custard or sweet potato. While she appreciates these innovations for engaging younger generations, her favorite remains the traditional creamy red bean paste version she grew up eating.“I try to throw it back to an earlier time when things were done in a simpler way,” she said.“Sometimes there’s a reason something has been around for a long time.”
Sharing qingtuan allows Luk to introduce Londoners to a Chinese holiday custom and promote Shanghainese cuisine, which is less recognized abroad than Sichuan or Cantonese food. The unexpected benefit of her pop-up restaurant is seeing her children become excited and curious about their cultural heritage.“I’ve unintentionally connected my kids to their roots,” she said.Eating qingtuan just once a year makes it more special for them.
8.What cultural value does eating traditional qingtuan emphasize?( )
A.Medicinal benefits. B.Youth’s flavor preferences.
C.Ancestral remembrance. D.The dominance of regional rice.
9.What trend do modern variations of qingtuan reflect?( )
A.Emphasis on healthier eating. B.Adapting to the tastes of young people.
C.Reinforcing traditional values. D.Reducing the content of glutinous rice.
10.What is the main reason behind Luk’s affection for traditional qingtuan?( )
A.Her vivid childhood memories. B.Her professional background.
C.Her deep commercial interests. D.Her sense of cultural responsibility.
11.What was beyond Luk’s expectation in sharing her qingtuan in London?( )
A.Developing her kids’ interest in Chinese culture.
B.Promoting Londoners to follow a holiday custom.
C.Recognizing Jiangnan’s cuisines as regional styles.
D.Making qingtuan become a non-culture heritage.

(2026·广西师大附中模拟)On 1 November, 1876, The New York Times, a newspaper, confidently declared Halloween would disappear forever. However, in 2024, consumers are expected to spend $11.6 billion celebrating the holiday, up from $3.3 billion in 2005.Perhaps it is time for the newspaper to eat some crow.
Halloween has transformed from a pagan (异教的) feast to a celebration with lovingly homemade costumes and treats to one of the largest consumer spending holidays in America.
But how did this holiday with humble origins become an economic boost with global appeal? Halloween is a marketer’s dream, said Arnold, a finance professor. It falls on the same day every year.Halloween items are largely consumable, for candy needs to be met every year and kids outgrow costumes, and pop culture trends can help predict which costumes will be the must-haves each season. The 1970s brought mass-manufactured costumes and individually wrapped candy that made the holiday explode in popularity. It also shifted from a more religious holiday to mass celebration.
Even when consumers are worried about their finances, they’ll still open their wallets for holidays like Halloween and Christmas, Professor Arnold said, because “it creates a unique experience at a particular time of the year”. “Even during the pandemic, consumers try to celebrate these two holidays,” he said.
Trick-or-treating came about as a way to distract children who, by 1900, had taken over the holiday.Kids only played simple but mischievous pranks. However, as time passed and America began urbanizing, the pranks became very destructive.Communities needed a way to “buy off” gangs of naughty children who were frightening neighbors by damaging furniture, setting tires on fire and even tripping people on sidewalks.Neighborhood house-to-house parties were held for kids. This origin of trick-or-treat also provided the basis for today’s haunted attractions like haunted houses and mazes as people would set up “trails of terror” in their basements.
