Before Global Positioning System (GPS) became widely available, exploring and navigating(导航) unfamiliar places was a demanding task. It required 21 , including consulting paper maps, planning and memorizing parts of the route.
In today's technological world, 22 , there is little need to think about the route. Using mobile phones to navigate has become 23 .Whether you're heading to a new park or meeting friends at a restaurant, all you need to do is tap the location on your phone. Then, simply follow the turn-by-turn directions to arrive at your destination.
But this 24 comes at a cost: your overall sense of place suffers. Once performed exclusively by the human brain and sensory system, spatial navigation has now been 25 by technology.
There are structures in the brain that are dedicated to these complex 26 tasks. In particular, the hippocampus (海马体) can 27 spatial memory, spatial navigation and mental mapping. In other words, it allows us to remember landmarks and estimate distances.
As we age, our memory declines. And while there is no perfect solution to healthy aging, scientists agree that one of the key factors is staying 28 active. Studies show that we can actually 29 the hippocampus memory through exploration and spatial navigation. 30 , expert navigators such as London cab drivers have larger hippocampus as a result of their extensive spatial mapping and multi-sensory experience of the city.
If spatial navigation is such an essential element to healthy aging and mental activity, why give this critical 31 to our phones? GPS navigation apps treat us as passive passengers rather than active explorers. In the process, they make us lose the 32 to make decisions. In turn, this reduces our ability to create proper mental maps of the surrounding environment, and negatively impacts the hippocampus.
Despite countless benefits modern technology offers, it is important to be 33 of its potential influence on the brain. Our ultimate goal should be to design tools that support our brain and enhance our opportunities to 34 with the real world around us. By carefully shaping technology in this way, we can ensure it serves as a supportive partner in our daily lives rather than a(n) 35 human experience.

It was less than a year ago when Maria found herself waiting on the phone line for more than half an hour just to speak with the school's translator. All she wanted was to ensure her sons' success in school, but her ability to communicate directly with school officials was slim. Maria had encountered struggles in the past which resulted from not speaking English ---with doctors and neighbors---but this was not acceptable. For Maria, this was the last straw. To be the mother her sons needed her to be, she would have to learn English.
Finding Literacy Partners could not have been more perfect, in Maria's own words. Classes were available at times that fit her schedule, and didn't interfere with the time she set aside for her
children. Better yet, after only a few lessons, Maria was able to start helping her sons with their homework.
She even said of Ronaldo, her six-year-old son, "We're learning the same words. I like that because we understand and learn together."
Every night, Maria sits down with both Ronaldo and her nine-year-old son, Mauricio, for two hours. They read, do homework, practice their vocabulary, and most importantly, spend quality time together. Maria has gone from never helping her sons with homework to helping five to six times per week. Furthermore, she has increased the time spent reading with them. Looking back, it amazes Maria that she used to have to call the school's homework helpline whenever her children had a question. Now, she's able to be right there when they need her.
But Maria didn't stop with her sons' homework. She even joined the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of their school. Praised by the school principal as "the president of the parents", Maria makes sure she continues to live up to the title. She's confident and secure, no longer nervous to reach out to others. Instead, she quickly steps into a role as the leader and translator for those who need assistance.
In one academic year at Literacy Partners, Maria gained two educational levels! She has also experienced less stress simply by being able to communicate with those around her.
When asked what she enjoys most about living in New York, Maria said,"Everyone has the freedom to express themselves as they please."And now Maria can have a taste of that same freedom.

Two years ago, Chris and Jenna Humphrey moved to their rural dream house, sitting in splendid isolation in the south Norfolk countryside. Now on three sides of their home, the fields are set to be filled with solar panels for one of Britain's growing number of huge solar farms."I'm all for solar--- we have panels on our garage(车库) roof,” says Chris. "It just seems criminal that hundreds of new houses are being built down the road and none has solar panels, when they would benefit households. But my bigger concern is these solar farms. They seem to reflect big-business thinking aimed at generating profits --- they are putting profits before the countryside, food production and the environment."
With thousands of panels covering an extensive stretch of land, these projects are considered by some residents as industrial factories rather than green solutions. Their once peaceful and rural community is now under attack. A villager named Berry, for instance, is worried about pollution when panels are driven into the land supposedly protected for her drinking water.
Adding to the frustration is a growing sense that local decisions are subject to being overturned by a higher authority. In many cases, local councils hold a vote and decisively reject a solar farm plan. However, the application can then be sent to a national government minister for a final decision. This process makes people feel that their local democratic (民主的) rights have been taken away, with decisions about their community made far away in the capital. It's a situation that has left many feeling angry and powerless.
For some landowners, their choice is shaped by economic reality."A lot of the land we're taking out of production is land that doesn't make money. It just produces some low-grade feed for cattle,"says one of the farmers who have rented fields to a solar farm company. He says he is losing money on his wheat fields and the company will net him upwards of £1,000 per acre(英亩)per year. "People like to think the countryside never changes and always looks beautiful," he says. The countryside has to make money like everywhere else. A lot of people support the solar farm. People are much more positive than is being made out."
43.The word"criminal”(para.1) mainly expresses Chris's criticism of ____
A.the failure to use solar panels where appropriate
B. the large-scale construction of new houses
C. the profit-driven operation of solar farms
D. the increasing reliance on solar energy
44. According to para.2 and 3, some residents' concern with solar farms is rooted in___
① the vast scale of solar farm projects
② the potential operational risks in factories
③ the complex voting system facing the local community
④ the government decision-making process that ignores local voices
A.①② B.①④ C.②③ D.②④
45. What does the farmer's situation in the last paragraph suggest?
A. A natural landscape appeals to local farmers more than an industrial one does.
B. The solar farm project can be a profitable alternative to conventional farming.
C. Realizing green goals outweighs satisfying local community needs.
D. Some farmers unwillingly rent their wheat fields to solar farm companies.
46. What's the main focus of this passage?
A.The financial struggles faced by British farmers.
B The environmental dangers caused by solar technology.
C. The government's efforts to promote renewable energy.
D.The controversy over large solar farms in the countryside.
Section C

A.In fact, moving is often a surprisingly wasteful process.
B. Planning your move in advance can help reduce stress.
C.One practical solution is to source used boxes from nearby stores.
D.This reduces the number of boxes and packaging materials needed.
E Ensuring that delicate items are well-protected is a key part of a green move.
F. Finally, hiring professional movers is the easiest way to handle a house move.
Moving Home in an Eco-friendly Way
It you're preparing to move house, you probably already know how stressful it can be.With so many tasks to handle, reducing the environmental impact of moving may not be high on your list of priorities.(47) _______ Fortunately, there are several practical ways to green your move and save some money.
To begin with, it's wise to sort through your belongings before packing.(48) _______ In turn, a smaller removal truck is enough, saving money and reducing pollution.
After clearing out unwanted items, the next step is packing. Many removal companies supply their own brand-new boxes at an additional cost.(49) _______ Since they cannot keep cardboard boxes for long as it's a fire risk, you can ask about their delivery schedule and collect boxes before they are sent to recycling.
Alternatively, you can make effective use of items already available to you. Suitcases can serve as excellent alternatives to boxes, and you can also borrow them from friends or family. Laundry bags are another convenient choice, as they can hold a large number of items and are often easier to carry.
(50) _______ Instead of buying new packing materials, consider keeping old newspapers or air-filed packaging beforehand. If you find yourself short on recycled materials, soft household items such as towels and clothing can be used to wrap breakables. This is also a clever space-saving technique!
IIL. Summary Writing (10’)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as possible.
Are Touchscreens in Cars Safe?
For years, almost every new car sold has come with a high-tech, futuristic screen, which controls everything from the air conditioning to seat heating. Even safety features like automatic lane-keeping systems are sometimes screen-controlled. Industry data show that about 97% of new cars produced globally now come equipped with at least one touchscreen, with approximately 81 million units shipped worldwide in 2025 alone. But is it really safe?
The case against them is straightforward. Physical buttons allow drivers to learn their locations and press them without taking their eyes off the road. In contrast, a touchscreen offers no physical feedback, requiring drivers to spend more time locating and operating controls. One study found that an old car with buttons completed simple tasks in 10 seconds, while a touchscreen-equipped car took 45 seconds. Additionally, if drivers have wet fingers, wear gloves in cold weather, or drive on rough roads, the screen can become hard to use. However, physical buttons work reliably in such extreme conditions. Worse still, a bright screen at night can interfere with a driver's vision. Even at its lowest brightness setting, the light pulls drivers' eyes away from the road, increasing the risk of nighttime accidents.
However, not everyone hates them. Admittedly, screen-based controls allow drivers to decide how features are arranged according to their daily needs, something physical buttons cannot easily match. Also, a single screen replaces dozens of physical buttons, reducing production costs. This allows carmakers to offer more competitive prices or invest in other safety features like better airbags.
Whether drivers prefer or dislike touchscreens, innovation in car technology shows no signs of slowing. Even as touchscreens are falling out of favor, many carmakers are turning their attention to voice control---though that is a subject for another story.
