When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives in Tennessee. We always stayed in Grandma’s house there with her, Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of excitement and joy. Often Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime. Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those visits.
One especially holds a special place in my heart. During that visit, I had great fun every day. One evening, I climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house. Although I had played and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s sweet events. As I lay there, I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me. It was laughter. Mom, Dad, Uncle Rich, and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes. The laughter was so happy, so joyous, that I found myself smiling. And even then in my young mind and childish heart, I realized that this is how life should be. The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell asleep feeling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy, I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me. They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and smiles. Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive. I write to her each week and I am so thankful to still have her in my life.
We fill lives with laughter, smiles, love and joy. We not only give ourselves happiness but also make this world a better and more beautiful place.

One natural disaster after another had got Brazil into trouble. There had been a huge mudslide (泥石流) in the country’s southeast, then a mysterious oil spill along the northeastern coast, and finally fires in the Amazon rainforest.
That was when Kauã Rodolfo, 11, decided it was time to help. The way he sees it, the planet is in big trouble — and it’s up to kids to solve it. So he started planting trees in the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba, one after another.
“It’s important to save the planet,” Kauã said, “and it’s important to protect trees, because they make us better.”
Kauã is an ambassador (大使) of an organization called Plant-for-the-Planet. Created in 2007 by a 9-year-old German named Felix Finkbeiner, it is an international awareness campaign led by children that began with a great goal: plant 1 million trees. But soon, what began as the one tree Felix planted at his school turned into several thousands, then several hundreds of thousands, then, within a few years, 1 million.
But the campaign — and the goal — didn’t stop there. It has sprung up in many countries across the world. Last autumn, it reached Kauã’s classroom. He immediately fell in love with the idea of planting trees and raising awareness about the environment, so he signed up for a one-day training course to become an ambassador of Plant-for-thePlanet.
What’s happening in the environment is unpredictable. It’s a scary time to be a kid. But Kauã doesn’t think it has to be.
The planet will find a way if people can learn to work together, he said. It is an idea he is trying to instill (逐渐灌输) by giving regular environmental speeches and planting trees.
“I’m not scared of the future of the planet, because I’m going to help the planet,” he said. “I’m going to do this. I’m going to go forward with this project. You don’t have to be scared.”
He’s already planted seven trees. And he’s excited to plant more.
“I don’t know why I love nature, but if I stopped planting trees, I would be sad,” he said.
28.Why does the author mention the natural disasters in paragraph 1?
A.To give some background to Kauã’s action.
B.To introduce the problems Kauã’s family is facing.
C.To stress the importance of protecting the planet.
D.To show the effects of human activities on the planet.
29.What can be learned about Plant-for-the-Planet?
A.It was based in Brazil.
B.It has achieved its goal.
C.It has a history of 20 years.
D.It was founded by Kauã.
30.What is the purpose of Kauã’s speeches?
A.To inspire people to take a training course.
B.To attract people to Plant-for-the-Planet.
C.To instill the idea of working hard into children.
D.To encourage people to protect the environment together.
31.Which of the following can best describe Kauã?
A.Helpful and patient. B.Positive and creative.
C.Responsible and determined. D.Smart and brave.

A recent study has found that food has a lot to do with comfort in a new city. In a new city, there’s an emotional cost to the food. You may miss your favorite restaurant or your family’s home cooking. But, on the other hand, you may love the new eateries you get to discover. People who were satisfied with their cultural neighborhood said they experienced new food more than anything else. In other words, the difference between adapting and not adapting to a cultural neighborhood may just be some new food.
Food wasn’t the only thing that influenced comfort in a new place. Knowing a city or a neighborhood well enough to travel without directions also strongly correlated with people’s ability to adjust. Respondents who felt comfortable in their new location took just 2.8 months, on average, to move around without directions, compared with the 3.7 months it took people who didn’t feel comfortable. This difference could represent anything from fewer frustrations to a greater sense of mobility, and even security.
There might be a reason why those who moved for work were so likely to be satisfied, and that reason is friendship. Work was the No. 1 way people made friends in a new city, helping 35.2% of respondents get to know people. Experts will tell you that making friends at work is not only important for your personal happiness but also a key for career success. So, whether you’re moving to a new city or not, be a friendly co-worker.
After a person moves to a new place, they may jokingly refer to the many local habits and phrases they’ve picked up, yet moving truly does bring its own host of changes in a person. Most commonly, that change is new interests, which is cited by 30.9% of respondents who have moved. New food preferences are also enjoyed for 27.7% of respondents. Fortunately, only 7.5% pretend to pick up a new accent (口音), which, research shows, is actually impossible after the age of 12.
32.Why is food important upon your arrival in a new city?
A.Food reduces your hunger in an unfamiliar city.
B.The taste of food helps you make new discoveries.
C.Good taste of food makes a neighborhood familiar.
D.Food provides emotional comfort and reduces homesickness.
33.What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.Knowing a place well helps you feel more comfortable there.
B.You can adapt well if you know the traffic situation in a new city.
C.You will feel less tired on your travels if you follow the directions.
D.A good sense of directions can make you feel less stressed.
34.What is the author’s advice on working in a new city?
A.Be satisfied with your new job. B.Make some friends in advance.
C.Be a friendly and cooperative co-worker. D.Be an outstanding professional.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards adults’ learning a new accent in a new city?
A.Unbelievable. B.Uncertain. C.Unbearable. D.Understandable.

As a parent, you want your kids to do their best in school. You already know plenty of sleep, healthy food and some school supplies are necessary. However, what else do children need to be successful without a professional homework helper? 36
Avoid delaying tasks.
One mistake students usually make is postponing unpleasant work and deliberately looking for distraction. Teach your children that the workload isn't going to get smaller if they wait longer. 37
Break projects down.
Many children get stressed out when they have big assignments due. 38 Often people get frightened by the difficulty of tasks without understanding that the large task is actually just made up of smaller ones. Another solution is to use a project proposal to help keep them on track with homework and projects.
39
There are a growing number of online references and homework resources. Not only will your children be better prepared for class the next day, but they’ll also learn a valuable lesson about how to research and find information online. From them you can also find ideas for educational activities that you can do with your children.
Keep it ordered.
40 Therefore, have your kids keep ahead of their homework with an organized system. For example, they could use a scheduling application like Asana or Trello to manage projects with arranged dates, or they might stick to an old-fashioned pen and a paper planner. See what works best for them and go from there.
A.Get help online.
B.Focus on homework.
C.Online learning is becoming more and more popular.
D.Teach them to break larger projects into smaller pieces.
E.Organization is the key to success, because it can maximize efficiency.
F.Here are some tips from professionals for helping your children with it.

范文一:
Dear fellow students,
This is Li Hua, your host of "Pinggang Voice". As Pinggang High School’s 95th anniversary approaches, I advocate for showing our sincere love for our alma mater.
One of the most precious things about being a Pinggang student is that we grow and thrive in this warm and inspiring campus. Over 95 years, our school has educated thousands of outstanding talents and passed down valuable good traditions. Sadly, some trivial behaviors may hurt our campus—littering, damaging public facilities, or ignoring our school’s history. Therefore, let’s take action from now on: learn about our school’s development stories, cherish every corner of the campus, and study diligently to live up to its expectations. The more we care for our alma mater, the more brilliant it will become. With our joint efforts, we can pass on its glory to the next generation.
Let’s honor our school with practical actions. Thank you!

Last but not least, we should study diligently and think actively.
