Many people think that stem cell donation (干细胞捐献) is scary, painful and dangerous. But Wang Juntao, a 22-year-old college student, proved it’s safe. Four years ago, he registered (注册) to donate his stem cells. In February, he got a call, telling him he matched with a person with a blood disease (疾病).
“I checked online and talked to Red Cross workers,” Wang said. “They said it’s safe.” In May, he finished the donation and became China’s 20,000th unrelated stem cell donor.
Stem cell transplants (移植) save people with blood diseases. “At our hospital, 80% of patients who have transplants live for five years or more,” said a doctor.
Many people think doctors take stem cells from the backbone, but it’s actually often done through the blood in the arm. Wang felt sick before the donation, but he soon felt better. “I hope my story shows how easy and important this is,” he said.
Donors can get free health checks before and after the donation. They also get other benefits like free bus and train rides for life, the main forms of public transport (交通工具). It’s simple: give a little, save a life. Wang’s story encourages more people to help others.

Facial recognition technology (人脸识别技术) is used in many places today. For example, the police use it to search for bad guys. It’s also used to unlock phones or doors. Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection (探测), is used in a new field: advertising.
Such technology is going through tests (测试) in a small number of stores. One kind of facial detection technology can tell a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. Another one can detect if someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to them.
Facial detection technology is also used inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people’s ages and five levels of feelings — from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.
Some people who like the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products (产品) they might like or things at lower prices.
