Besides the amazing competitions of China’s 15th National Games, two funny mascots (吉祥物), named Xiyangyang and Lerongrong, have won the nation’s heart. Although people lovingly call them the “greater bay chickens (大湾鸡)”, their design actually comes from the Chinese white dolphin—a valuable animal known as the “panda of the sea”.
The mascots’ design is full of meaning. For example, the three-colored water patterns on their heads stand for the official flowers of the host cities: Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macao. When we look from the front, the water patterns form a heart, which means “Everyone is together”.
What has made the mascots so popular is not only their cute appearances, but also the humorous and energetic performances at the Games. In fact, they are not lively by accident. The performers inside the mascot suits are teenage students from martial arts schools To bring the mascots to life, they have practised for nearly five months. Their wonderful martial arts skills and cheerful natures have truly won the hearts of the public.
This popularity is also serving as a powerful economic (经济的) driver. Over 2,800 official products, like toy “greater bay chickens”, have been developed for the Games. How do you enjoy yourself when you’re alone? According to a study by John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US, doing activities that need both attention and skill can help people deal with loneliness and enjoy being alone.
Dattilo explained that when people are absorbed in (全神贯注于) what they are doing, they get into a state (状态) called “flow”. People can achieve the state by doing what they love whole-heartedly and using their skills at the same time.
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance (平衡) between the difficulty of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a computer program bot your skill level is low, then you probably feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”. Also, if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you are a pianist or a painter, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed...and we experience momentary (短暂的) enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often amazed by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people get into flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
So next time when you are alone, you can also try to enjoy yourself by doing something interesting. Don’t feel lonely and make full use of such chances.
41. Doing any activity can help people deal with loneliness and enjoy being alone.
42. People can achieve the state called “flow” by doing what they love and hate.

There are three kinds of questions in English: direct, indirect, and question tags (反问句). People use these kinds of questions differently according to different situations. ____46____
Direct questions are either yes or no questions such as “Are you married?” or information questions such as “Where do you live?”. It is certainly correct to ask so, but you can make it sound more polite by adding “excuse me” or “pardon me” to begin your question. ____47____ For example, we can say “Excuse me, could you please help me pick this up?” or “Would you mind if I sit here?”. Remember that “please” should not appear at the beginning of the question.
____48____ Notice that an indirect question begins with a phrase (I wonder, Do you think, Would you mind, etc.), and the real question is then placed in a positive (肯定的) sentence form ____49____ We often use question tags when we check information that we think is correct. We also use them to ask for more information by using different intonations (语调). If the voice goes up at the end of the sentence, we’re asking for more information. ____50____ For example, you remember that Jack is from New York, but you are not sure about that. Then you can ask, “You live in New York, don’t you?”
No matter what kinds of questions you use, keep in mind that it is the politeness behind those questions that matters in communication.

E“But each kind can be used to ask polite questions.”(但每一种都可以用来提出礼貌的问题)符合逻辑,承上启下。
第二段介绍直接疑问句,提到可以通过加“excuse me”或“pardon me”使其更礼貌,空白处后举例“Excuse me, could you please help me pick this up?”。 A“It’s also possible to use ‘could’, or ‘would’ in some situations.”(在某些情况下也可以使用“could”或“would”)与后文例子衔接自然。
D“Using indirect questions is a polite way of asking polite questions.”(使用间接疑问句是提出礼貌问题的一种方式)作为段落主题句,准确概括了间接疑问句的礼貌属性,与后文形成总分关系。
(I wonder, Do you think, Would you mind等),真正的问题放在肯定句形式中”。 C“For example, we can say ‘I wonder if you know what time it is.’”(例如,我们可以说“我想知道你是否知道几点了”)符合逻辑,与后文解释对应。
B “If the voice drops, we’re making sure about the known information.”(如果语调下降,我们在确认已知信息)与上文形成对比,符合逻辑。

In a little town, there was a clock tower that had stood for centuries. The clock tower was known for its perfect timekeeping, and was looked after by Mr. Pendulum, the town’s timekeeper.
One day, Mr. Pendulum decided to take on an apprentice (学徒). He chose a young boy named Oliver. Oliver was excited but also nervous, knowing that keeping time was a task of great importance. Mr. Pendulum taught Oliver everything he knew about the clock.
When Oliver worked with Mr. Pendulum, he learned that time was not just about numbers and minutes—it was about moments and memories. The clock tower was quite special. It could show the time of the past and the future. Mr. Pendulum showed Oliver how to use this to help people in need.
One day, a young woman named Emily came to the clock tower for help. She was feeling lost and uncertain of her future. Mr. Pendulum and Oliver let her see a piece of her past, where she had faced challenges but had also experienced moments of joy and growth. They then showed her a possible future, where she could achieve her dreams and find happiness.
Emily was moved by the experience and left the clock tower with renewed hope. Oliver realized that the true power of the clock tower was not in keeping time, but in helping people find their way.

They have become especially popular and sold out quickly both online and in stores. The success shows how a strong cultural idea, together with modern design, can really connect with people today.

Five years ago, Ms Cheng was a nurse. She worked for almost 30 years but was made jobless. It was very difficult for her to find another job because she was old. After two years of searching, the mother of two found another nursing job. But then after two years, she left. Why?
“My workmates were young and they didn’t understand me because of my age,” she said. So while the rest of her family left for work, she felt lonely at home. That made her unhappy. Then, one of Ms Cheng’s neighbours told her about Employees’ Retraining Board (ERB) offering retraining courses for older people on exact work.
“I was interested in courier work. I didn’t think my age was a problem. So I thought why not give it a try,” she said. After graduating from the ERB, Ms Cheng was offered a job by a company.

43. If the task is too easy or too hard for people, the state of flow will not appear.
44. Telling stories to other people can lead to the state of flow if you are a storyteller.
45. When someone leaves a state of flow, they are often surprised by how time flies.

They then showed her a possible future, where she could achieve her dreams and find happiness.
Emily was moved by the experience and left the clock tower with renewed hope. Oliver realized that the true power of the clock tower was not in keeping time, but in helping people find their way.
