[2025余姚中学高二月考]Twenty-two years ago, I won a Nobel Prize, together with Tim and Leland Hartwell, for our work on how cells control their division.
The prize changed our lives. Suddenly you become a public figure being asked to do all sorts of things: to give lectures, quite often on topics you know little about; to sit on committees you are not always well qualified to be on; to visit countries you have barely heard of. It is like having a whole new extra job, with upwards of 500 requests a year.
A recent study suggests that in general the extra work that Nobel winners take on results in fewer papers after their awards. There may be some truth in this given the extra demands on one’s time, but of course prestigious(有威望的) awards also allow new projects and research to be undertaken.
What effects did the Nobel Prize have on my following career and work? It has certainly helped me to get scientific leadership positions. Within a year of getting the prize I was offered and accepted the presidency of Rockefeller University in New York. Having the prize also helps to get things done. For example, I have been involved in the merging of two separate cancer research charities to form Cancer Research UK. And the new institution has helped me support causes I care deeply about. Moreover, having a Nobel Prize does help attract high-quality research colleagues. I have just got three outstanding new PhD students. It is a privilege(特权) for me to be able to pursue curiosity-driven research at this late stage of my career.
However, one thing I am glad to say that the Nobel Prize did not influence was peer review from my fellow scientists, assessing the suitability of my own research for publication, and my grant applications for funding. What all scientists are looking for is truths rather than Nobel winners’ papers. So, my rejection rates have remained essentially the same before and after the prize. And that, of course, is exactly how it should be.
4.What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 2?
A. To express his regret at the change of life.
B. To share his pride in winning the Nobel Prize.
C. To show his confidence in handling the extra jobs.
D. To display his substantial tasks after winning the prize.
5.What does the underlined word “merging” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Competition. B. Comparison. C. Combination. D. Construction.
6.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The positive impacts of the Nobel Prize.
B. The special requirements of the Nobel winner.
C. The great contributions made by the Nobel winner.
D. The scientific leadership offered by the Nobel Prize.
7.Which statement may the author agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. The spirit of science lies in seeking facts and truths.
B. Winning a Nobel Prize has an impact on peer review.
C. A Nobel winner has the same rejection rates as others.
D. Extra commitments make Nobel winners less productive.
C
Some talk of building settlements on the moon or Mars to help make sure humanity survives long into the future. Others have their sights set on future cities under the ocean.
“Technologically speaking, it is absolutely possible to colonise the bottom of the sea,” says Fabien Cousteau, a well-known ocean explorer who once spent 31 days living in what is now the world’s only functioning undersea habitat, Aquarius. It’s about the size of a school bus and located about 19 metres below the ocean surface in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Just as astronauts test what it will be like to live in space, aquanauts try out undersea living with an eye on the future. Escaping from disasters such as climate change, wars, or pandemics is one reason to live under the sea. Others include studying, exploring, or appreciating the ocean. It’s expensive to constantly keep up an ocean habitat which must make its own air, electricity, and fresh water. Inhabitants have to deal with high pressure. And infections can develop rapidly due to high humidity.
Despite the challenges, several new ocean habitats and cities are under construction. A series of space station-like undersea living quarters for aquanauts called Proteus is scheduled to be completed soon off Curaçao, an island north of Venezuela. An undersea colony called Vent Base Alpha will be built near a hydrothermal vent, which will supply it with energy. Meanwhile, an undersea city called Ocean Spiral in Japan will use ocean thermal energy conversion (海洋热能转换) to generate energy and produce fresh water. This sounds amazing, but it will be extremely expensive and remains just a design.
Not everyone agrees that building homes in the ocean is a good idea. This type of development could place even more strain on ecosystems that are already struggling with pollution and climate change. It’s important to make sure that any construction is done carefully, says Susanne Menden-Deuer, an oceanographer at The University of Rhode Island. Wild undersea habitats should be treated as “the precious, irreplaceable resource that they are,” she says.
8.What do we know about Aquarius?
A.It is still under construction.
B.It functions as an undersea school bus.
C.It is the only ocean habitat in operation.
D.It only allows a person to live there for 31 days.
9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The present and future of living under the sea.
B.The reasons and challenges of living under the sea.
C.The purpose and cost of building undersea settlements.
D.The problems and findings of building undersea settlements.
10.What may be the result of building homes in the ocean according to the text?(
A.Rapid development of undersea habitats.
B.Protection of irreplaceable ocean resources.
C.Negative impacts on undersea ecosystems.
D.Struggles with pollution and climate change.
11.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A travel guidebook. B.Science fiction.
C.An essay about the population. D.A science magazine.

Needles, though essential for delivering many vital medicines, are not popular among patients. Many people experience discomfort or anxiety at the sight of a needle, making injections (注射) an unpleasant experience. Now, new research led by Giovanni Traverso at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers a way to give medicine without this discomfort — by copying how squids (鱿鱼) shoot ink and water.
Dr. Traverso’s tiny automated injectors are packaged in capsules(胶囊) that patients can swallow. Once inside the digestive system, the capsules break down, releasing the injectors, which then deliver drugs through the surface layer of stomach or other digestive organs and into the subsurface tissue below. This method allows patients to receive treatment without seeing or feeling a needle.
Although the technique is promising, it is not yet entirely reliable. For an injector to work effectively, it must be positioned almost perfectly upright against the target tissue. With skin injections, a medical professional can adjust the angle by hand, but inside the digestive system, this is much more difficult.
To solve this problem, Dr. Traverso turned to squids, which can shoot ink and water at high pressure in multiple directions. Inspired by this natural ability, he and his team worked with a medical company to develop tiny spring-loaded devices that release fast streams of medicine when activated. Tests on digestive tissue from pigs and dogs showed that the devices can effectively give injections even at angles below 70°.
While human trials have yet to begin, Dr. Traverso hopes the technology will soon help people with diabetes, a disease that requires the patients to get multiple injections daily. A more convenient delivery system could make treatment easier and less stressful. But the potential applications extend beyond diabetes — similar devices may one day be used to administer vaccines, making immunization more accessible. If all goes well, fear of needles could become a thing of the past.
12.What can we learn about the new injectors from the first two paragraphs?
A. They are made from squid ink. B. They are invisible to human eyes.
C. They enjoy popularity among patients. D. They operate within the digestive system.
13.What challenge does Traverso’s technique face?
A. Keeping the injector at a correct angle. B. Accessing the deep digestive system.
C. Finding a proper place for drug delivery. D. Partnering reliable medical professionals.
14.Which best describes the technology in the future?
A. Economical. B. Profitable. C. Risk-free. D. Widely-used.
15.What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Secret of Squid Ink Shooting
B. Painless Injection: A Gift from Squids
C. The Future of Digestive System Treatment
D. Needleless Injection: From Animals to Humans

[2025武汉一中高二期中]The next time you’re at an airport or a hotel, you might notice a traveling group that consists of young kids, parents, and grandparents vacationing together. 16 But more and more families tend to bring multiple generations with them.
17 In larger groups, for example, child-care responsibilities can be shared across family members, allowing parents to take a break. But the real value of these trips might be how they give relatives an opportunity to freshen their understanding of the people they’ve known for perhaps their entire life. Travel can take people out of their familiar contexts and offer them a chance to see one another differently.
The shift toward multi-generational travel has a few explanations. For one, grandparents today stay healthy later in life, allowing them more energy for travel. 18 Plus, the average U.S. household has become more multi-generational. Americans are not just traveling with grandparents in order to spend time with them; they are traveling with them because they are more likely to live with them in the first place. 19 Americans are taking fewer vacation days than they did in the 1970s. They might want to make the most of that time by including as many people as possible.
Whatever the reason for its popularity is, a multi-generational trip can be a rare time when younger and older generations can have a look at the complex people they have each become. Away from the family home, older generations get to see their adult children as responsible parents. Kids get to see their grandparents encounter a new environment. 20
A. Another explanation is time pressure.
B. The benefits of multi-generational trips are numerous.
C. Decades ago, only wealthy families vacationed together.
D. A scene like this would have been rare a few decades ago.
E. Multi-generational family travel tops the list of travel trends.
F. Also, big-group accommodation has become more affordable.
G. All perceive each other’s role and figure out how to be together.

One afternoon, my three children asked my husband and me to sit down to watch their PPT.The slides were designed to convince us that we needed a second dog.“Turtle would have a friend!” their last slide read. Turtle, our beloved dog, was almost 3.From his first weeks, he would stay at my side during the day. Each night, he found his place beside the kid who needed him most.
“Okay,” my husband said after talking with me.“But,” he continued with his eyes on the kids, “you need to show us you can handle a dog by taking more responsibility for Turtle from now on.” In response, they eagerly promised to take good care of him.
To our surprise, that evening, Turtle didn’t come for dinner. We finally found him at the top of the stairs, sitting still, as if in pain. The kids’ excitement was replaced by worry.
We immediately carried him to the animal hospital, where a vet (兽医) said he had a back problem and gave us some medicine.
But overnight, Turtle’s condition worsened. Back at the hospital, we learnt an operation was the only option, although there was a chance that Turtle might never walk again. With a heavy heart, we decided to give it a try. Then we drove home to await the all-clear call. Instead, with almost no warning, Turtle died, which came as a shock. Not even a day had passed since we agreed to get a second dog.
That night, the kids crowded into our room, crying. The next morning, I stared at Turtle’s empty water bowl and felt the house was too quiet without him. In the days that followed, our neighbour’s dog Bertie became a small comfort. My kids borrowed him to cuddle (搂抱).One night, my son asked, “Mum, could we invite a bunch of dogs over to play? Like a party in Turtle’s honour?”
I understood the desire. I asked to pet every dog I passed and looked forward to Bertie’s visits as much as the kids. Therefore, the idea for a celebration of life for Turtle was born.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
The kids designed invitations that read, “Come and Celebrate Turtle’s Life.”________________

I hope you are doing well.To enhance cultural exchange and mutual understanding, our school will host an International Festival Culture Event, which provides students with a great opportunity to learn about traditions and customs from different countries.
We would be truly honoured if you could attend the opening ceremony and deliver a short speech about an important festival in your hometown.Your sharing, which will broaden our horizons and deepen our appreciation of cultural diversity, will surely make the event more meaningful and inspiring.
We are sincerely looking forward to your earlier reply.

The kids designed invitations that read, “Come and Celebrate Turtle’s Life.” They drew pictures of Turtle playing and added colourful decorations. We delivered them to friends, neighbours, and anyone who had ever met Turtle, encouraging them to bring their own pets along. On the morning of the party, we baked cookies for the guests and carefully set out dog treats and toys. The kids even arranged a photo wall showing Turtle’s happiest moments. Our yard looked wonderful, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. As the start time approached, my heart was filled with a mix of hope and anxiety.
To my surprise, 13 dogs and 40 people showed up that day.The yard was full of laughter as the dogs played and the guests shared stories about their own pets.My kids excitedly joined in the play and storytelling. It was a heartwarming and comforting sight. As the celebration neared its end, I gathered everyone together and my son read a note.“Turtle was more than just a pet.He was a beloved family member,” he said emotionally. As we all stood there, united by the memory of Turtle, I realised that even in his absence, he had brought us closer and taught us the true meaning of love.
