Ben had always admired his grandfather’s old pocket watch. It wasn’t fancy, just a simple silver watch with some old words on the back. “Time is precious,” it read. Whenever Ben visited, his grandfather would let him wind it up (上发条) and listen to the soft ticking.
One evening, while helping his grandfather clean the attic, Ben found an old wooden box buried under some books. Inside was the pocket watch, but the hands did not move. He turned to his grandfather.
“It stopped working,” Ben said, disappointed.
His grandfather took the watch gently and smiled. “Yes. It stopped a long time ago”.
“But do you know why I kept it?”
Ben shook his head.
“Because it reminds me that time doesn’t wait for anyone. When I was young. I always thought I had plenty of time to do the things I wanted—travel, learn new skills, spend time with family. But I didn’t do anything. Then one day, I looked at this watch, and I realized something: time was passing quickly. even when I wasn’t paying attention.”
His grandfather continued, “That’s when I decided to stop waiting. I started to learn to play the violin, I traveled to places I had only dreamed about, and most importantly, I made sure to spend time with the people l love.”
Ben looked down at the watch. It might not work anymore, but it still had a purpose—it told a story.

Can a machine think? Can a computer answer questions in a human-like way? How can you tell if you are talking to a computer?
New computer programs called language models have gotten very good at copying people. These artificial intelligence (AI) programs analyze millions of sentences from books and websites to learn hidden patterns in language. It’s exciting to see AI making realistic sentences. But there are also problems with AI-made texts. People have used AI-made texts to cheat on tests. It can be really hard to tell if you’re talking to a person or a computer.
We wanted to learn more about AI. So we called up 4,600 participants (参与者) for a study. We told the participants that they were using a website where some people wrote their own biographies (传记), and some people used AI to write theirs. Each participant rated 16 texts, half of which were AI-made. They then rated each text on a 5-point scale from “definitely AI” to “definitely human”. The participants were largely unable to tell whether they were people-made or AI-made. Their answers were wrong about 49% of the time.
We found that people were following a few rules of thumb When people saw a meaningless or repetitive text, they were more likely to say it came from AI. Truly, an AI text was more likely to have these qualities. But some rules of thumb gave wrong answers! People thought bad grammar and unusual word choices appear in an AI text, but they were actually more likely to come from human-made text. And when people saw contractions (like “don’t” or “won’t”) they thought it was a sign of a human writer, but actually, AI was more likely to use such words.
These are often wrong, which means that people are likely to be cheated. A person sends emails to people pretending to be someone trustworthy. The email might say “Hi, I work for your bank! You need to log in and fix something in your account.” With AI, the person could make different emails to try to pretend one that’s very believable.
There is a lot of useful information online, and a lot of fun things, too. But there are also a lot of ways to get in trouble. We can never know who is on the other side when talking to someone on the Internet—it may not even be a human! That’s why it’s important not to just rely on your gut feeling, but check the website URL and author information. If something seems strange, tell your parents or a responsible adult about it!
27. The researchers did the study to find out _______.
A. who can write biographies faster, human or AI
B. whether AI can answer questions in a human-like way
C. which biographies were better, the human-made or the AI-made
D. whether we can tell the human-made biographies from the AI-made
28. What do we know from the passage?
A. Engineers are developing AI’s copying skills.
B. The participants use a website to write their biographies.
C. There are more wrong sentence structures in AI-made texts.
D. AI-made texts are likely to choose the same words to express.
29. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To compare AI’s writing with human’s.
B. To study the reasons of popularity of AI use.
C. To improve our judgement online in the age of AI.
D. To discuss the main characteristics of AI-made writing.
D 28. D 29. C
根据“We told the participants that they were using a website where some people wrote their own biographies (传记), and some people used AI to write theirs”和“The participants were largely unable to tell whether they were people-made or AI-made. Their answers were wrong about 49% of the time.”
根据“And when people saw contractions (like ‘don’t’ or ‘won’t’) they thought it was a sign of a human writer, but actually, AI was more likely to use such words.”
根据“There is a lot of useful information online, and a lot of fun things, too. But there are also a lot of ways to get in trouble. We can never know who is on the other side when talking to someone on the Internet—it may not even be a human! That’s why it’s important not to just rely on your gut feeling, but check the website URL and author information.”
D
“You’ll get square eyes!” my mother used to say as I sat for hour after hour glued to the TV. I ignored her, of course. Fast-forward a few decades and now I’m the parent. My 5-year-old lives in a world where screens aren’t fixed pieces of furniture. You can’t even avoid them by going outside. Screens are not only in our pockets; they’re everywhere.
The concerns have grown with the screens. In the past decade; we have heard that they will damage our mental health. Many of us feel more distracted by them, feelings guiltier and more tired as a result.
The apps and websites on our phones have also sparked widespread concern. Big tech companies are also good at making use of our need for social recognition hooking us on likes, retweets and follower counts. Social media has created a culture of mass narcissism (自恋), which has led many to worry about the emotional stresses on teenagers. A quick online search brings up papers linking screen use or social media with harmful effects on mental health, including depression and suicide.
Such statements are alarming. They are also widely believed, thanks to popular books like iGen by Jean Twenge, which claims that digital technology has ruined a generation. Yet, Amy Orben at the University of Oxford, who studies the impact of digital technology and social media in particular on mental health, holds different views. She claims that the underlying data can be used to tell different stories. She also spotted shortcomings in several large studies that claimed to show correlations (相关性) between the use of devices with screens and depression in users.
Twenge stands by her own finding, pointing in turn to what she considers flaws in Orben’s research methods. For David Max, at Royal College of Child Health in London, the effect of screen time and social media use on mental health remains speculative. “We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad,” says David. “We don’t know whether in individual cases social media is responsible or not,” he says.
The sharp increase in mobile phone use has completely changed our lives. I can download movies, write articles, communicate with my family and broadcast to the world all at the push of a button. Rather than set limits, we should take a look at our use of screens and ask how they fit with the activities and lifestyle.
Every new technology with widespread impact has given rise to new fears. So the best bet may simply be to ask yourself what level of screen use makes you and those around you happy and try to stick to it. If you find yourself overly addictive, don’t panic—and certainly don’t feel guilty. Nobody knows anything worth getting scared about.
30. According to the passage, people give likes, retweet or count followers to ________.
A. show respect for others B. seek social recognition
C. share one’s lifestyle D. relieve emotional stresses
31. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Teenagers are more affected by screen use both physically and mentally.
B. Big tech companies help to produce many research papers on mental health.
C. Orben claims it is far too early to blame screen use for ruining a generation.
D. Twenge mainly introduces the overall benefits of digital technology in her books.
32. The underlined word “speculative” probably means “ ________”.
A. noticeable B. important C. specific D. doubtful
33. The passage is written to ________.
A. relieve people’s worries about the use of screens
B. encourage readers to reduce the time of screen use
C. share different opinions on the effects of screen use
D. explain why screen use may have negative effects on people
B 31. C 32. D 33. C
第三段第二句指出:“Big tech companies are also good at making use of our need for social recognition hooking us on likes, retweets and follower counts.”
第五段中David Max提出屏幕使用对心理健康的影响remains speculative,随后补充“We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad”“We don’t know whether in individual cases social media is responsible or not”。
全文先介绍人们对屏幕使用的普遍担忧,再呈现Twenge与Orben的正反双方观点,最后建议读者“ask yourself what level of screen use makes you happy”并指出“nobody knows anything worth getting scared about”。
The Paradox (矛盾) of Choices
A little café “The Sip and Smile”, known for its simple atmosphere. had been a gathering place in a small town for years. The café offered a menu with three coffee choices: black, cappuccino, and latte. People came, ordered their favorites, and enjoyed conversations that went long after the coffee cups were empty.
One day the cafe decided to broaden its menu. In an effort to attract more customers, it introduced 50 kinds of coffee, from espresso to flavored frappes. However, a strange thing started happening. As the menu grew, the once-busy cafe began losing its charm. People would walk in, look at the endless list of choices. and hesitate, unable to decide. The pleasant conversation that used to fill the air turned into voices of uncertainty: “Should I try mocha today? Or maybe macchiato? Wait, maybe..?”
What had once been a simple, joyous act of ordering coffee now felt like a burden. Customers spent more time choosing than enjoying. The town folk, who once loved the café for its simple choices were now confused by too many choices.
Psychologist Barry Schwartz introduced the idea of the “paradox of choice,” which suggests that while having some choices is good, having too many can lead to anxiety, indecision, and dissatisfaction. This. paradox appears because we start to worry that we’ll make the wrong decision. or miss out on better choices as choices increase.
After months of decreasing business, the cafe learned its lesson. The café owner decided to return to a simpler menu. Now, customers had a select few choices, each made with are. Conversations returned, the laughter came back, and the café once again became a place where choices felt easy and joyful.
In life, the best decision often has nothing to do with the number of choices—it’s the one that brings us peace. Just like the customers of the café, we too can find comfort in simple choices.

In the English class, we are conducting a peer assessment activity on “classroom performance”. Let’s talk about my deskmate Zhang Jun’s performance.
Zhang Jun has three main advantages. He always listens to the teacher carefully and answers teachers’ questions actively in class. Besides, he cooperates well with partners during group work! However, he also has two weak points. He never raises questions in class, and he doesn’t take notes.
Here is my advice for him. First, he should dare to put forward his doubts to teachers or classmates after class. Asking questions can clear up confusion quickly. Second, he should learn to take notes carefully in every class so that he can review the key points after class. If he follows these suggestions, he will surely make greater progress in English class.

Speedy and Steady
“Well, Amy, how are you getting on with your napkin(餐巾)?” cried Lizzy, whose skillful fingers seemed to fly over her work. “Not very fast, I have almost finished one side.” answered Amy.
“One side!” said Lizzy, with a ____13____ which was neither pleasant nor kind, “why, we both began hemming our napkins at the same time, and I’m now at the fourth side of mine!”
“I know that I am ____14____,” sighed Amy. “But I’ll try to be steady(稳), and to do my best,” said the little girl, as she threaded her tiny needle, and went on with her work.
“As I sew so fast,” cried Lizzy, “I am sure to have finished my napkin long before the bell rings for ____15____. I’ll just run for a minute to the garden, to see if the roses are out.” —so, tossing down her work on a chair, Lizzy flew off.
Amy ____16____ for the fresh air and the flowers, but her work must first be done. Steadily she laid down her broad hem, and had finished the second side of her napkin before her sister came back.
Then Lizzy left again for a cup of coffee. Amy went on with her work. Before her sister again entered the room, the ____17____ side of her napkin was hemmed.
“Had you not better finish your sewing?” said Amy, “It must be near dinner time now.” “Oh! I can finish it in two minutes, only I want to look at that story, which Tom told us was so amusing.” Lizzy replied impatiently.
“But if you are late?” murmured Amy.
“No ____18____ of that!” cried Lizzy, “No one is so likely to be late as a slow little creature like you!”
Poor Amy made no reply, but quietly she worked on. Lizzy was soon so ____19____ in her story that she forgot all about her work, till shocked by the sound of the bell.
“Can it be dinner-time!” she cried, “Oh dear, and my napkin is not hemmed! And yours?”
“It is just finished.” said Amy.

That night, Ben lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. He thought about the things he didn’t do—finishing his book, helping his little sister with her painting, and visiting the park with his dad.
The next morning, as he got ready for school. Ben made a decision. He wouldn’t wait any longer.
