.Dear Chris,
I’m so glad you enjoyed your trip to the Forbidden City! Another charming spot to explore Chinese culture is Suzhou Classical Gardens, located in the beautiful city of Suzhou, east of China.
These gardens are masterpieces of traditional Chinese landscape design, combining delicate pavilions, clear ponds, elegant rockeries and meandering paths. They embody the ancient Chinese philosophy of "harmony between man and nature," making you feel like stepping into a vivid Chinese ink painting.
I sincerely hope you can wander through one of these gardens and feel the gentle elegance of Chinese culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
听力原文:
1.W: My father insists that I have lessons on Sunday night.
M: Here we have several hours to go. I’ll wait for you in the tennis field at four. Don’t be late.
W: You bet!
2.M: I’m back. Is there anything I can help with for dinner?
W: Great! Could you start by washing the vegetables?
M: Sure. And I can do the cutting after that.
3.W: Hi! Glad to meet you. I’m an exchange student from Mexico.
M: Cool. Could you help me practice my Spanish when you’re in the United States?
W: Sure. It’s my pleasure.
4.M: You look worried. What’s wrong?
W: I can’t find my phone. I remember using it just now.
M: Well, why not use mine to call it? Listen! It’s ringing in your bag.
5.M: How are you getting on with your new neighbors?
W: Luckily, they don’t make too much noise. And they always smile and say hello. But what bothers me is the mess they’ve left outside.
6.W: Why did you run out of the room and close the door like that?
M: I was so angry.
W: Do you mean I misunderstood you?
M: To be Frank, you did, I think.
W: Okay, but can you first explain what you did with the cash I left?
M: The dog was sick and I didn’t want to call you on your vacation, so I used the money to take him to the animal hospital.
W: Now everything is clear. It’s my fault.
M: Glad to hear you say that.
7.W: Jacob, your dad said you need my help.
M: Yes please help me preheat the oven. I want to make a chocolate cake on my own. First, put the cocoa powder in the bowl, right?
W: Yes. Remember how many other ingredients we should put into the bowl?
M: Let me think. A cup of water, two cups of vegetable oil and four eggs.
W: Right. I’ll put some oil on the baking sheet so that the cake base won’t stick to it.
M: OK. Everything is done. Let me set a timer for 30 minutes. By the way, Jim invited me to watch his football game in the afternoon. Can you take me there?
W: I have to visit your grandma then. Your dad is free. But you have to clean up the kitchen first.
M: OK.
8.M: Have you seen what’s happening in Baxton Park, Melinda? They’re going to build an entertainment center in it.
W: Oh, I know. It is a pity. It will be used to hold parties every weekend, and then people will be coming and going at all hours of the night! How are we ever going to get a good night’s sleep?
M: I think the trees will probably weaken the sound quite a bit. After all they’re quite heavy and close round here. What I’m worried about is parking. This is going to attract a lot of people here.
W: I know. There’s nothing we can do about the plan.
M: What about phoning up the local paper and getting their photographer round? You never know, we might just get them to think again.
9.M: Hi, I would like to buy a one-way ticket to Brussels please.
W: Certainly, sir. We have an overnight train that leaves at 9 p.m.
M: How long does it take to get there?
W: About twelve hours. If you’d like, you can choose a sleeper on the overnight train, which is not expensive at all.
M: Yeah, I think that is a good option. Do you serve food on the train?
W: Yes, of course. There is a dining car where they serve meals at all times. We do provide free water and coffee for all of our passengers.
M: Great! I’ll take it.
W: Here you are, sir. Your train leaves from platform number eleven at 9 o’clock. Remember to be here at least thirty minutes before the departure time or else you might miss your train!
M: I understand. Thank you very much!
W: Have a great trip.
10. M: Hi, everyone. I’d like to tell you what our class did to celebrate World Environment Day. First, the headmaster gave a presentation about the dangers the environment is facing nowadays and what each of us can do to protect it. Then our history teacher divided our class into three groups. Each group had a teacher as a leader. I was a member of the first group. We spent over two hours going around the neighborhood putting up posters about environmental protection. It was very cold and we got very tired, but we all felt very proud of ourselves. The second group was responsible for cleaning the streets around the school. They picked up all the rubbish on the streets, and they also put two rubbish bins at the school gate. The third group was asked to plant flowers in the schoolyard. When they grow, I’m sure our schoolyard will look very beautiful. When we all finished what we had to do, we gathered in the schoolyard again. The headmaster and our teachers thanked us and gave each of us a bag made of waste paper.

In 2007, when Felix Finkbeiner was nine, he had to give a report on climate (气候) change. As he researched his report, Felix learned about Wangari Maathai, a woman in Kenya who led a project which planted 30 million trees. She also started the United Nations (UN) tree-planting program, the Billion Tree Campaign (运动).
Then Felix got an idea. He told his classmates in Germany, “Let’s plant a million trees in every country of the world!” Two months after Felix first talked to his class, his tree-planting project, Plant-for-the-Planet, began.
Felix went to other schools and encouraged them to plant trees. News programs learned about Felix’s plan and covered the story. Plant-for-the-Planet used groups of young students around the world to spread the idea further. Three years after Felix came up with the idea, Plant-for-the-Planet planted its millionth tree.
Sharing the idea is almost as important as planting the trees. Plant-for-the-Planet offers training for students. The group hopes the students will not just plant trees, but will also talk to grown-ups in governments and businesses to try and get even more trees planted.
When Felix was 10, he spoke to the European Parliament. In 2011, when he was 13, he spoke to the UN. The UN put Plant-for-the-Planet in charge of (负责) its Billion Tree Campaign.
Felix is now 21, and Plant-for-the-Planet has 70,000 young members in 67 countries. The group also has over 130 people working for it around the world. From early on, Plant-for-the-Planet’s slogan (口号) has been, “Stop Talking. Start Planting.” In all, Plant-for-the-Planet has planted 1 billion trees. But they have a new goal (目标) — they want to plant 1 trillion (1,000 billion) trees.
24.How did Felix Finkbeiner get his idea of his tree-planting project?
A.Through a news program.
B.By taking part in the Billion Tree Campaign.
C.Through a UN volunteer program.
D.By learning about Wangari Maathai’s campaign.
25.How many trees Plant-for-the-Planet has planted in all?
A.One million. B.30 million. C.One billion. D.One trillion.
26.What can we learn about Plant-for-the-Planet?
A.It pays more attention to planting trees.
B.It encourages teenagers to share the idea of planting trees.
C.It trains students and businesses.
D.It is run by the UN’s Billion Tree Campaign.
27.Which of the following can best describe Felix Finkbeiner?
A.Outgoing and wise. B.Gifted and organized.
C.Humorous and patient. D.Determined and ambitious.

Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on Earth. Each adult is over a meter tall, and can weigh up to 40 kilograms.
For many months each year, emperor penguins live near the sea in large groups. However, the weather gets colder in May, and ice covers large areas of ocean. Each group moves many kilometers from the water. There, each mother penguin lays just a single egg. Then all the hungry mothers walk back to the ocean to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of their feet. They cover the eggs with a special piece of skin called the brood pouch.
For two months, the father penguins protect the eggs and keep them warm. They do this through some of the coldest weather conditions on Earth. By July, it is winter in Antarctica. Most other animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay.
By August each mother penguin returns just in time to see her baby hatch. The chick is then moved to her brood pouch. This can be difficult. If the chick falls, it can freeze quickly. The penguin parents must be very careful. Once the chick has been moved, the father penguin can go back to the ocean to find food.
Over the next few months, penguin parents take turns going to the ocean for food. They each make the trip several times, bringing back food for the chick. The chick is always hungry and grows rapidly.
By December winter is ending. The chick can now live on its own. Soon it enters the water for the first time. It will swim and eat until next April, and then return. After a few more years, it, too, will start its own family.
28.What do father penguins do after the mother penguins lay eggs?
A.Build nests to keep the eggs warm. B.Cover the eggs with their whole body.
C.Take turns carrying the eggs to the sea. D.Hold the eggs on their feet with a skin pouch.
29.What will mother penguins do after returning in August?
A.Hatch the egg in the brood pouch.
B.Move the chick to her brood pouch.
C.Let the father penguins rest immediately.
D.Feed the chick with food from the ocean.
30.According to the text, when can the penguin chick begin to live on its own?
A.After the spring. B.Before the summer.
C.During the fall. D.After the winter.
31.What can be the title of the text?
A.How Emperor Penguin Parents Lay Their Eggs
B.The Life Cycle of Emperor Penguins in Antarctica

People often grumble that plastics are too durable. Water bottles, shopping bags, and other trash litter the planet because plastics are everywhere and don’t break down easily. But some plastic materials change over time. They crack and melt into sludge, all of which creates huge headaches for institutions, such as museums, trying to preserve culturally important objects.
Until recently, museums only have to worry about traditional materials. “We know how to approach the restoration of paintings, books, and materials like wood, metals, and glass,” says Anna Laganà, a research specialist at the Getty Conservation Institute. “But for plastics, our knowledge is still limited.” Tonkin, now a doctoral researcher in fashion conservation at Nottingham Trent University, agrees. “We’re now trying to figure out how to conserve plastics,” she says.
Nearly every museum in the world has plastic items, and even well-cared-for objects can fall apart alarmingly quickly. Museums are doing everything they can to save culturally important items from similar fates. But preservation of plastics will likely get harder. Old objects continue to decline. Worse, biodegradable plastics, designed to fall apart easily, are increasingly common.
We now live in an age of plastic, and what we decide to collect today, and what we decide to preserve, will have a strong impact on how we’ll be seen in the future. Future archaeologists looking at what’s left from the 21st century will probably find lots of poisonous waste, along with plenty of plastic trash. But if museum preservation efforts succeed, maybe those scholars will also see that plastic items today can be culturally meaningful – and even cherished.
32. What are two totally different features of plastics mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. Popular but rarely recycled. B. Harmless to nature but harmful to humans.
C. Easy to make but hard to clean. D. Some long-lasting but others easy-to-degrade.
33. What can we infer from Anna Laganà and Tonkin’s words?
A. Museums lack expertise in plastic preservation.
B. Traditional restoration makes plastic conservation needless.
C. Plastic conservation in fashion is completely solved.
D. The Getty Institute leads plastic preservation research.
34. What is the main role of Paragraph 3?
A. Explain why plastic preservation is harder than traditional ones.
B. List ways museums protect plastic cultural objects.
C. Show plastic items are common in global museums.
D. Stress the growing challenges of plastic preservation.
35. Where can this passage be found?
A. In a travel brochure. B. In a fashion magazine.
C. In a science report. D. In a science fiction book.

According to the IIE Open Doors Report, only 8% of international undergraduates used U.S. university scholarships as their main funding source in 2018, with universities covering most or all tuition and living costs. Many others got smaller performance-based scholarships to offset (抵消) some expenses. Though these successful applicants have diverse backgrounds, they share similar qualities that raise their chances for admissions and scholarships. Below are key strategies to improve your odds of getting such opportunities.
Grades and Test Scores
Most universities use high school grades and ACT/SAT scores to predict college performance. Even if these grades and test scores are optional for admission, they are usually required for scholarship consideration. ____36____
High School Curriculum
____37____ Scholarship programs also consider your academic performance in the context of your high school challenges. Such advanced coursework and extracurricular activities provide solid evidence that you are ready for college beyond regular curriculum. A student with strong grades in challenging classes is more attractive than one with similar scores in easier courses.
Recommendation Letters
Choose counselors and teachers who know you best to write your recommendation letter. A good letter should address your unique qualities, emphasize challenges you overcame, and reference your achievements mentioned in the application. ____38____ Scholarship committees rely on these letters to check your application information.
____39____ Selective programs want to ensure you fit their campus environment. Use your personal statement to explain your background, interests, and future goals related to the institution’s mission. Research the college thoroughly and practice expressing your ideas in both writing and interview formats.
Early Application and Interest
Waiting until the final deadline won’t help you win scholarships. Colleges often give scholarship preference to early applicants as they show more interest and likelihood to enroll. Reaching out to staff and faculty early can also bring advantages, as committees may note the quality of these interactions for future reference and consideration. ____40____
A. Personal Statements and Interviews
B. Seize preferred deadlines to get noticed.
C. Challenging courses show academic ambition.
D. Volunteer work boosts your application strengths.
E. Therefore, top 25% class grades can make it easier to get scholarships.
F. Achieving competitive standardized test scores may be optional sometimes.
G. It will showcase your strengths in detail and make your application impressive.
