It was a hot summer day. I came to Beijing for a running race. Halfway through the race, I started to feel dizzy (眩晕的). Before I could finish the race, I fell down.
Some people said I had heatstroke (中暑). Later, I learned I had heat exhaustion (热衰竭). What’s the difference?
If we exercise too long in the heat, our bodies can lose too much water and get too hot, and we will experience heat exhaustion. If so, our body temperature will increase. We will feel tired and want to drink water. Often, we have a headache. If you get heat exhaustion, find a cool place right away. Drink enough water and rest. If you don’t do these, heat exhaustion may turn into heatstroke.
Heatstroke is very dangerous. If someone has heatstroke, his body temperature will go up to 40℃ or even higher. He won’t get better without treatment. People who get heatstroke will feel dizzy, breathe fast and even die.

Unit 4:自然奇观
01
In recent years, many modern cities suffer from heavy rain and floods. Streets turn into rivers, and cars are often stuck in deep water. However, in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, there is a “magic” secret. Even during the rainy season, the old city stays dry and safe. The hero behind this is not a modern machine, but an ancient underground drainage system called “Fushougou” (Fortune and Longevity Ditches).
Located in the southeastern part of China. The city gets flooded easily during the early spring and summer. To work out the problem. A smart official named Liu Yi designed this system. He didn’t try to fight against the water. Instead, he learned to work with nature. He designed the ditches based on the shape of the land. Because the northwest of the city is higher and the southeast is lower, the rainwater can flow naturally into the river.
The system has two main parts: the “Fu” ditch and the “Shou” ditch. They look like the Chinese characters for “fortune” and “longevity”. The most amazing part is the “water window”. It acts like a door. When the river outside is high, the water pressure pushes the window shut to stop the river water from coming back into the city. When the river is low, the rainwater from the city pushes the window open and flows out. It works automatically!
Besides draining water, the system also connects with many ponds in the city. These ponds act like “sponges”. When it rains heavily, they hold the extra water. When it is dry, the water in the ponds can be used for daily life.
Thanks to the wonderful design, Ganzhou hasn’t flooded for over a thousand years. Today, Fushougou still works well. Many people come to Ganzhou not only to see the beautiful natural wonders but also see the amazing Fushou ditch. It teaches us that respecting nature is the best way to solve problems.

C.To show that modern machines are not useful at all.
D.To introduce the topic by comparing modern problems with Ganzhou's success.
2.How did Liu Yi design the Fushougou system to deal with the rainwater?
A.He used powerful pumps to push the water out.
B.He built high walls to fight against the river water.
C.He used the natural height difference of the land.
D.He dug deep holes to hide the water underground.
3.How does the “water window” work?
A.It opens by itself when people need to walk through it.
B.It uses machines to pump the dirty water out of the city.
C.It stays open all the time to let the rainwater flow out quickly.
D.It closes when the river is high and opens when the river is low.
4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
5.What can we learn from the Fushougou system according to the passage?
A.We should build more ponds in every city.
B.Ancient people were smarter than modern people.
C.Working with nature is a wise way to solve problems.
D.Drainage systems are more important than tall buildings.

Does the Dead Sea sound like a place where you’d like to go swimming? What do you expect to see in it? Do you believe there are dead things in the Dead Sea?
Lying in southwest Asia, the Dead Sea is about 80 kilometres long, about 18 kilometres wide and about 300 metres deep. It also has some other names, such as the Salt Sea, the East Sea, or the Sea of the Plain.
Even though it’s called the Dead Sea, it isn’t a sea at all! It’s a lake. Different from other lakes you might have seen, the Dead Sea is quite a salty lake. In fact, the Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. The Dead Sea is so salty that no fish or plants can live in it, though some microorganisms can still survive. That’s why it’s called the Dead Sea. And the Dead Sea stays quite salty because it gets only a little rain, and so little fresh water gets into the Dead Sea each year.
Don’t let the name of the Dead Sea make you feel scared. The Dead Sea is a surprising place to visit, and many people go to the Dead Sea each year on holiday. One interesting thing is that anyone can float in the Dead Sea. So if you walk on the beach of the Dead Sea on a warm day, perhaps you can see many people floating in its waters. You might even see many of them reading books or magazines!

In January 2025, serious wildfires broke out in Los Angeles, California.
The first fire was reported at 10:30 a. m. on January 7 in the hills near the Pacific Ocean. By noon, strong winds spread the fire quickly. People started to leave their homes. Just after 6:00 p.m., the Eaton fire broke out in other parts of the area. Over the next three days, six other fires broke out in the area. More than 150,000 people had to leave for safe places and 87,000 received evacuation (疏散) warnings. Thousands of firefighters and workers worked together to fight the fires and ensure the safety of people.
In total, the fires destroyed more than 12,000 homes, schools, shops and other buildings. At least 25 people died, and 23 were missing. Schools were closed, roads were shut down and many homes lost power. As smoke went across the country, officials set air quality warnings and asked people to wear masks.
The fires were so strong because of the dry weather and very strong winds. There was no rain for months, so dead plants and trees created fuel (燃料) for fires. The winds also made it hard to help put out the fires.
Next, firefighters kept working until the fires were out. Then, people began cleaning and building.

Being caught in a flood is quite dangerous. Floodwater moves quickly and it is known to pull trees out of the ground, wash away buildings and cause bridges to break down.
Of course, drowning is a danger during a flood, not only because there is so much water and it is moving quickly, but also because of what the water is carrying. Pieces of glass, bricks and metal caught in the moving water can hurt anyone in the floodwater, making it more difficult to swim or walk through water.
Moreover, floods can cause power cuts, traffic jams and wide destruction (毁灭). The flood itself isn’t the only thing to deal with. The things after the flood can be just as difficult, because it may not be possible to send basic supplies such as food and drinking water to the area.
So how can we protect ourselves during the flood? Here are some tips for you:
1. Listen to the official radio broadcasts. If you are told to move to a safer place, do so.
2. Never try to walk, swim or drive through floodwaters. It only takes 15 centimetres of moving water to knock a person off his or her feet.
3. Stay away from ▲ , as they are often knocked down during strong storms and flooding. They can cause water all around to become charged (带电的), leading to people’s deaths because the power isn’t cut off.
After the flood, do not drink the floodwater or use it to wash dishes. Drink clean and safe water. If you move from your home, return to it only after the local government has said it is safe to do so.
4.Where is the text most probably from?
A.A guidebook. B.A movie poster. C.A science report. D.A local newspaper.
5.Which of the following doesn’t make drowning a great danger during a flood?
A.There is so much water.
B.The water is moving very fast.
C.Some of the people are not good at swimming.
D.The floodwater carries pieces of glass, bricks and metal.
6.Which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
A.fallen trees B.power lines C.hard rocks D.broken houses
7.What do we know about floods according to the text?
A.After the flood, it is easy for us to send basic supplies to the area.
B.15 centimetres of floodwater isn’t strong enough to knock people down.
C.If you are a good swimmer, you can swim across the floodwater safely.
D.Floods can cause a lot of problems not only during the flood but also after the flood.
8.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To tell us what causes the flood.
B.To tell us how dangerous the flood is.
C.To tell us how to stop floods from happening.
D.To introduce the danger of floods and give advice on how to protect ourselves.

The Floating Gardens of Bangladesh (孟加拉国)
In Bangladesh, a country that experiences frequent floods, farmers have found a clever way to grow food even when their land is underwater. They create floating gardens.
For centuries, farmers in this South Asian nation have used water hyacinths (水葫芦) to build floating rafts(木筏). They collect the plants, let them dry slightly, and then layer them together to form a platform. On these floating beds, they grow vegetables like spinach, eggplant, and pumpkins.
“When the floods come, our land disappears under water,” explained farmer Muhammad Islam, “but our gardens float. We don’t lose our crops.”
The floating gardens do more than just provide food. They also create jobs for women in rural (乡村的) communities. Women help build the rafts and harvest the vegetables, earning money for their families.
Climate change has made flooding more terrible in Bangladesh. Sea levels are rising, and storms are becoming stronger. For many farmers, floating gardens are no longer just a tradition, they are a necessity.
Scientists from around the world have come to study these gardens. They believe the technique could help farmers in other flood-prone (易涝的) countries, such as Vietnam and Myanmar.

Canadians are easy to get along with and they usually say hello to each other even if they are strangers. When men and women meet, women usually hold out their hands first. If a woman doesn't want to shake hands, she can just nod and smile. If a man wears gloves, he should take them off before shaking hands.
Brazilians are very friendly and they always get ready to say hello to others. They stand very close to each other when speaking and may touch each other's arms or backs. And if you go to a business meeting in Brazil, you are not expected to take a present.
When you meet Indians, it is important to say hello to the oldest person first. But you'd better not hold out your left hand when you say hello, because it is impolite. Also, many Indians are enthusiastic and they like to say hello actively and have a conversation with you when you travel in India.

①Last summer, I joined a two-week cultural exchange camp in New Zealand. It was my first time to experience foreign culture in person, and it left me an unforgettable lesson about cultural respect.
②I lived with a local host family. On my first dinner there, I tried to be polite by picking up food for my host parents as I usually do in China. However, they looked a little surprised and gently refused my kindness. I felt confused and upset at that moment.
③Later, the camp teacher explained the reason to me. In New Zealand, people value personal independence. They prefer to choose food by themselves instead of being served by others. My polite behavior in Chinese culture was regarded as unnecessary interference in local culture. I finally understood the cultural misunderstanding.
④To solve the problem, I adjusted my behavior quickly. I stopped serving food for others and followed local dining rules. Meanwhile, I actively shared Chinese dining culture with my host family. I told them our manners show respect and care for others. They were interested and praised our warm cultural customs.

Have you ever travelled to another country and found that people use their hands or bodies in ways you cannot understand? Body language, a form of non-verbal (非言语的) communication, is very different in different cultures. Understanding these differences can help us avoid misunderstandings.
For example, the common “thumbs-up” gesture, which means “good job” or “okay” in many Western countries like the United States, is rude in some parts of the Middle East. Similarly, the “V for victory” sign is positive in America, but if you make it with your palm facing inward in the UK or Australia, it becomes an insult (侮辱).
Nodding your head usually means “yes”, and shaking it means “no”, right? Not always! In Bulgaria and Greece, people often nod to mean “no” and shake their heads to mean “yes”. This can be very confusing to visitors.
Another important aspect is personal space. In countries like Mexico and Saudi Arabia, people often stand closer to each other during a conversation. However, in some European countries such as Germany and Sweden, people prefer more personal space and feel uncomfortable if others stand too close.
Even something as simple as eye contact has different rules. In many Western cultures, looking someone in the eye shows confidence and honesty. But in some Asian cultures, like South Korea and Japan, prolonged eye contact can be seen as disrespectful or challenging, especially when talking to someone older or in a higher position (地位).
In a word, body language is a powerful but silent language. What is polite in one culture might be impolite in another. When we communicate with people from different backgrounds, knowing these non-verbal signs is as important as learning their spoken language.
1.According to the text, where is the “thumbs-up” gesture rude?
A.In the United States. B.In some Middle Eastern countries.
C.In Japan. D.In Germany.
2.If someone from Greece shakes their head while you are speaking, what are they most likely expressing?
A.They are saying “yes”. B.They are feeling confused.
C.They are feeling happy. D.They are saying “no”.
3.Why does the writer mention personal space and eye contact in the text?
A.To suggest that Western ways are better.
B.To argue that these are the most important parts of body language.
C.To show that all cultures have the same rules for these behaviours.
D.To give more examples of how non-verbal communication differs culturally.
4.What does the underlined word “prolonged” most likely mean?
A.Very serious. B.Lasting for a short time.
C.Happening very often. D.Lasting for a long time.
5.What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To encourage people to travel more.
B.To teach readers how to use gestures correctly.
C.To discuss the different meanings of body language in different cultures.
D.To explain why spoken language is more important than body language.

If someone asks me, “What’s your superpower?” I’ll proudly reply, “Reading!” Reading is like a magical key that unlocks countless doors to unknown worlds. Whenever I open a book, it’s as if I step into a time machine. I can journey back to ancient Egypt to feel the great power of huge stones. I can also solve mysteries, in foggy cities, or chat with robots in the distant future.
My reading journey began with picture books. I still remember following the colourful illustrations (插图) in an old folktale collection with my tiny fingers. Now, I sometimes lose myself in thick novels. Last month, I stayed up late finishing a story about courage and kindness. The main character’s journey made me laugh and cry, teaching me that true beauty lies in kindness.
Different books give me different super suits. Science books are my astronaut helmet (头盔), sending me into space to see amazing stars. Biographies (传记) become time machines, letting me walk alongside great people in the past. Poetry turns into musical notes, dancing in my heart.
Our school library started a reading-sharing programme this year. Every week, we recommend books to classmates. I once suggested a classic tale about friendship to a classmate who disliked reading. To my surprise, he now carries it everywhere, saying, ”This story has changed my view on how to get along with others!“
A teacher once told me that books are bridges connecting hearts across centuries. I finally understand. When I read timeless beautiful words, I’m whispering with thinkers from the past. How amazing! So, put down your screens, pick up a book, and let’s begin our next exciting journey between the pages!

C.To encourage readers to pick up books and experience the charm of reading.

Reading is not just fun; it’s like giving your brain a super workout! When you read, your brain is busy doing many things at once. Scientists have found that reading can actually change your brain for the better.
First, reading makes your imagination stronger. When you read a sentence like “The castle stood on a dark and stormy hill,” your brain doesn’t just understand the words. It creates a picture of that castle in your mind. It imagines the wind and the rain. This creative activity is like exercise for the parts of your brain that help you dream and create new ideas.
Second, reading helps you understand other people’s feelings. This is called empathy (共情). When you read a story, you go inside the character’s head. You feel what they feel—their happiness, their sadness, and their fear. For example, if a character loses a loved one, you feel sad with them. This practice helps you understand real people better in your daily life.
Finally, reading can lower your stress. Getting lost in a good story is a great way to relax. It takes your mind away from your own worries. After just 30 minutes of reading, your heart rate can slow down and your muscles can relax. So, the next time you feel stressed, pick up a book. It’s a healthy escape!

During the summer, please be very careful when you’re out in the sun.
1.The writer starts the passage by ________.
A.giving reasons B.showing numbers
C.sharing an experience D.answering a question
2.The underlined word “increase” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.
A.rise up B.fall down C.not change D.become better
3.What do heat exhaustion and heatstroke have in common?
①They make people feel dizzy.
②They make body temperature go up.
③People need a long time to get better from them.
④People get them for staying too long in hot weather.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
4.The writer writes the passage mainly to ________.
A.tell readers why he gave up the race B.show the importance of drinking water
C.ask people to be careful in hot weather D.advise people to stop doing exercise
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.C
②第三段说热衰竭“body temperature will increase”,第四段说中暑“body temperature will go up to 40℃”,所以体温都会升高,②正确。③文中说热衰竭休息喝水即可,中暑如果不治疗会很危险,并未提及两者都需要“long time”恢复,且热衰竭恢复较快,③错误。④第三段开头“If we exercise too long in the heat... experience heat exhaustion”,中暑也是高温导致的,所以都是因为长时间处于炎热天气/环境中,④正确。综上,①②④正确。
4.文章最后一段明确指出:“During the summer, please be very careful when you’re out in the sun.”,这是作者的写作目的,即提醒人们在炎热天气中要小心。A项只是引子;B项是预防措施之一,不是主旨;D项过于绝对,文中并未建议停止运动,而是建议小心。

Unit 4:自然奇观

Unit 5:自然灾害

“This is traditional knowledge that is becoming more valuable every year,” said Dr. Amina Rahman, a researcher from Dhaka University.“The farmers figured out how to live with nature instead of fighting against it.”
Today, more than 100,000 families in Bangladesh use floating gardens. The government is helping to spread the technique to other regions. As one farmer put it, “The water used to be our enemy. Now we have learned to make it our friend.”

Unit 6:文化习俗
As more and more people have a trip around the world, it is necessary for them to know what to do in different countries and how to deal with cultural differences. Here are different cultures from three countries.

【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.D 5.C
【导语】本文通过多个实例介绍了肢体语言(非语言交流)在不同文化中的差异,说明了了解这些差异对跨文化交流的重要性。
