四、阅读理解
Based on the movement of the sun, ancient Chinese people invented 24 Solar Terms (节气), each lasting around two weeks. Among them, “Rain Water” is the second term, falling around February 18th or 20th. When “Rain Water” arrives, it brings life to all things. Spring rain begins to feed the earth, waking up everything from its winter sleep. The ground temperature gradually rises as the rain falls, and the weather becomes quite wet in the following days.
This is a wonderful time for nature. Birds migrate (迁徙) back to the north, ducks float on the water, and plants grow new buds. The seasonal calendar acts as a calendar for farmers, guiding them on when to plant seeds for the best harvest. After a cold and dark winter, “Rain Water” tells the farmers that it’s the perfect time to start planting.
There’s a beautiful poem by the famous Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu that perfectly describes the “Rain Water”.
Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.
Over wild lanes dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;
The town’s heavy with blooms.
In this poem, Du Fu describes that the spring rain knows exactly when to fall. It comes silently at night, making everything wet without a sound. The open fields are covered in dark clouds, and only a lantern on a boat can be seen in the distance. When dawn comes, the flowers are so wet and heavy with raindrops that the whole town seems to be blooming with beauty.
Through this poem, Du Fu expresses his deep love and admiration for the spring rain that brings life and hope to the earth. He sees the rain as a gentle and kind force that nurtures (培养,养育) and cares for all living things. Just like the rain, he hopes that life can be gentle, beautiful, and full of new beginnings for everyone.

The Impact of Extreme Weather on Our Lives
In recent years, extreme weather has become a common topic. It has a big impact on our daily lives. When a heatwave comes, the temperature rises sharply. Festivals are special days when people celebrate important events, beliefs, or seasons. Although every culture has its own festivals, many share similar meanings.
In China, the Spring Festival is the most important celebration. Families clean their houses to banish bad luck and eat dumplings together at midnight. Children receive red envelopes with money, which represents good wishes for the new year. Interestingly, the Vietnamese also celebrate Tet, a spring festival with very similar customs.
Western countries welcome the new year on January 1st. In New York City, thousands of people gather in Times Square to watch a crystal ball drop at midnight. However, the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, falls in September or October. Instead of fireworks, families eat apples with honey to hope for a sweet year ahead.
Light festivals appear in many cultures too. The Indian festival Diwali, known as the “festival of lights”, celebrates the victory of light over darkness. People light oil lamps and create beautiful rangoli patterns on the ground. Meanwhile, the Chinese Lantern Festival marks the end of the Spring Festival. Families solve riddles (谜语) on colorful lanterns and watch dragon dances in the streets.
What makes these festivals special is not just the food or decorations, but the values behind them. Whether it is family reunion, hope for the future, or good beating evil, festivals tell us what truly matters in life. Perhaps that is why people around the world continue to celebrate them generation after generation.

Hi, Paul. I can’t believe I’m finally here—I’ve always wanted to go on a safari (游猎旅行)! And I can’t wait for you and your parents to join us. We’re going to have so much fun together.
So far, this trip has been both good and bad. The flight to Kenya (肯尼亚) was the longest I’ve ever been on— it was really tiring. Also, when we arrived at the airport in Kenya, we couldn’t find our bags. We later found out that they had been mixed up with the bags from another flight. It took us more than two hours to get our luggage.
But later that day, things got better. We went to a local market, and my Mom and I tried ugali. It’s a traditional Kenyan dish made of corn. It was delicious! You should try it when you get here. My dad was less adventurous. He ate banana pancakes just like the ones we usually have at the cafe back home!
The next day, we started our safari in a place called Maasai Mara. That’s where we are now. My mom has taken about a thousand photos! We saw many animals, including giraffes, zebras, elephants, and crocodiles. I even saw a lion, but no one believes me.
Anyway, I can’t wait to see you. I’ve written a list of things for us to do together, including horseback riding. It’ll be so much fun!
Write back soon.

When traveling around the world, you’ll find that different countries have their own unique rules in daily life.
In Japan, taking the subway has its own set of norms (准则). People line up neatly on the platform, waiting for the train to arrive. They are extremely quiet inside the subway cars. Eating and drinking are not allowed, as it helps to keep the environment clean and peaceful. Also, when using escalators, people usually stand on the left side in big cities like Tokyo, leaving the right side free for those in a hurry to walk up or down.
In Singapore, rules are strictly enforced (执行) in public places. In restaurants, it’s common to see signs reminding people to clear their tables after eating. This is to ensure that the staff can quickly clean up and prepare for the next customers. Littering is not tolerated (容忍) at all. If you are caught dropping even a small piece of paper on the street, you could face a hefty (高额) fine.
In the United Kingdom, on the roads, cars drive on the left-hand side. Pedestrians also need to be aware of this and look right first when crossing the road. Can a pile of poop (一坨大便) save a forest? It sounds funny, but for the African forest elephant, their poop can be a real life-saver!
These elephants live deep in the rainforest. They are smaller than their cousins—African savanna elephants (非洲草原象), but they have a big mission: keeping the forest growing. Their favourite snack is the fruit from the ebony tree (乌木树). You might have seen ebony wood on a fancy guitar. This wood is very hard and helps guitars make a clear sound.
But the ebony tree has a problem. It cannot spread its seeds by itself. That’s where the elephant comes to help. After an elephant eats the fruit, it walks far, far away and…plop (扑通一声)! It poops out the seeds in a new place.
This pile of poop is like a smelly shield (盾,屏障). It hides the seeds from hungry rats and other animals. Inside the poop, the seeds are safe and ready to grow.
Sadly, these “gardeners” are in trouble because of hunters. Without elephants, there are no poop shields. This means fewer ebony trees can grow. Ebony trees grow very slowly. It takes over 100 years for one to become an adult. If forest elephants disappeared, the ebony trees might disappear, too. As scientists say, what we do to the elephants today will change the forest 100 years from now. Let’s protect our big heroes!
1.What’s the important mission of the African forest elephant?
2.Where can you find ebony wood?
3.How does the poop protect the seeds?
4.According to the article, who puts elephants in danger?
5.Why is it hard for the ebony tree to grow? Find two possible reasons in the article.
6.Protecting the elephants is a good way to protect the forest. Can you give two other ways to protect the forest? Write at least 30 words.

Carlinhos Brown was born in Candeal in 1962. He became popular in Brazil in 1982. In the 1990s, people around the world knew him as the leader of a music group called Timbalada.

On a classroom wall, he wrote, “This is the school of my dreams.” He wanted the students to feel excited about learning.
Hundreds of children between 5 and 12 years old have learned to play music there. First, they learn to play samba music on old plastic boxes and tin cans. Later, they learn to play other instruments. Many students from the school have become great musicians.
The school has taught young musicians from Candeal since 1994. “ I started my music life here as Carlinhos’ student,” says Jair Rezende. Now Jair is a teacher at the Pracatum Music School. “ We help children stay away from drugs (毒品) and fighting.”

Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.
Over wild lanes dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;
1.Which of the following is NOT a sign of “Rain Water”?
A.Plants growing new buds. B.Ducks swimming in lakes.
C.Birds migrating back. D.Fallen leaves covering the ground.
2.What does this seasonal calendar guide farmers to do?
A.To predict the weather. B.To build houses.
C.To plant seeds for the best harvest. D.To celebrate festivals.
3.What’s the Chinese title of the poem Happy Rain on a Spring Night?
A.《饮湖上初晴后雨》 B.《春夜喜雨》
C.《春雨后》 D.《夜雨寄北》
4.How does Du Fu describe the spring rain in his poem?
A.Loud and stormy. B.Gentle and silent.
C.Heavy and continuous. D.Warm and brief.

The Impact of Extreme Weather on Our Lives
In recent years, extreme weather has become a common topic. It has a big impact on our daily lives. When a heatwave comes, the temperature rises sharply. People have to stay in air-conditioned rooms to avoid the scorching heat. It also leads to an increase in the use of electricity, which may cause power shortages in some areas.
On the other hand, heavy rainfall and floods can destroy houses and roads. Many people have to leave their homes and move to safer places. The agricultural production (农业生产) is also badly affected, which may lead to the rise of food prices.
Moreover, strong winds and snowstorms can disrupt transportation. Flights are canceled, trains are delayed, and roads are blocked. This makes it difficult for people to travel and may affect the supply of goods.
In conclusion, extreme weather brings great challenges to our lives. We should take action to protect ourselves and reduce its negative impact.

【导语】本文主要介绍了世界各地不同文化中迎接新年和庆祝光明的节日(如春节、犹太新年、排灯节、元宵节),并指出节日的真正价值在于其背后的家庭团聚、希望与善战胜恶等共同意义。
1.第三段明确写道:“the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, falls in September or October.” 其他选项中的月份均未提及。
2.从上下文“clean their houses to banish bad luck”可知,打扫房屋是为了“赶走”或“扫除”厄运。“sweep away”意为“扫除、驱除”,最接近原意;“clean up”只是打扫,不含“驱除”的引申义。
3.第二段末尾提到越南也庆祝春节(Tet),并说“with very similar customs”,作者以此说明不同文化之间可以有相似的传统。其他选项(亚洲节日无聊、解释为何喜欢春节、比较哪个更流行)均不符合。

6.全文结尾说:“Perhaps that is why people around the world continue to celebrate them generation after generation.” 作者认为节日传递了生活中真正重要的东西,应代代相传。选项“They help people understand different cultures better”虽有一定道理,但并非作者强调的核心;作者更侧重节日本身的永恒意义和延续的必要性。

【答案】1.Keeping the forest growing. 2.On a fancy guitar. 3.By hiding the seeds from hungry rats and other animals. 4.Hunters. 5.Because the ebony tree cannot spread its seeds by itself, and it grows very slowly, taking over 100 years to become an adult. 6.We can use less paper and recycle waste paper in our daily life, so fewer trees need to be cut down. We can also refuse to buy products made from rare wood to reduce the demand for logging.
