You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during a day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray. PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the Elevator Guy.
“The lift becomes an interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of strange.” Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”
We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift-users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.
He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want — it’s your own little box. If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地) across from each other to create distance.
Newcomers to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act quickly. Once in, for most people the rule is simple — look down, or look at your phone.
Why are we so awkward in lifts? “You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people, we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”
In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be considered to be threatening or strange, “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.

A.Thinking much of it. B.Avoiding it on purpose.

A.It’s funny and quick. B.It’s strange and dangerous.
C.It’s interesting but awkward. D.It’s convenient but boring.

A.Talk loudly to each other. B.Keep still and silence.
C.Use mobile phones. D.Keep a close distance.
4.According to the article, people feel awkward in lifts because of _________.
A.someone’s odd behaviors B.the lack of space

A.To show how to ride each elevator.
B.To introduce some rules of elevator etiquette.
C.To show how to break awkwardness of riding lifts,

It is believed in some ways that the daughter is father’s lover. But my experience has taught me in a different way. For a long time my father has been a very vague figure (模糊的形象) to me. He was a man of few words, tall but slim and nothing else.
When I was in primary school, my father was never there to pick me up, and he never came to any of my parent-teacher meetings. He was always busy doing projects. I remember when I was in middle school and my head was badly hurt in a PE class, During my operation, my father was nowhere to be found. This hurt me most. At that moment, I considered (认为) my father as a cold-blooded man who did not care about me at all.
But things seemed different at my high school graduation ceremony (毕业典礼), where I was chosen to represent my class and give a speech. My father, once again, told me he had a business trip in a place outside the city and would be unable to show up (露面). “Don’t come. I will be very nervous if I see you,” I told him.
I remember my speech went smoothly. After the ceremony was over and I was about to leave, I suddenly noticed a familiar (熟悉的) looking man sitting in a corner of the hall. It was my father! I was so surprised that I rushed to him with tears running down my face. “Well done,” he said. His ayes were also filled with tears.
Later, I found out that my father had managed to finish his work by staying up late, and he drove for eight hours to get back. He had been sitting in the corner because he didn’t want me to see him. My father remembered every word in my speech.
For much of my life, I described my father was a cold-blooded man who only cared about his work. But when I thought deeply about this, it was obviously not true. At my graduation ceremony, I could feel my father’s deep love. The fact is that seeing is not believing, and seeing may not be the fact if we don’t perceive (感知) the world with our hearts and minds. There’s no doubt that life doesn’t lack (缺少) love, but sometimes our eyes have trouble seeing it.
6.What was her father’s figure to the writer at first?
A.A man full of words and warm-hearted.
B.A man of few words and nothing special.
C.A tall and strong man who is wise and hardworking.
D.A cruel and cold-blooded man.
7.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The writer’s father was in the hospital during her operation.
B.The writer’s father attended her high school graduation ceremony.
C.The writer’s father sometimes picked her up when she was in primary school.
D.The writer’s father went to parent-teacher meetings when she was primary school.
8.The writer rushed to her father with tears running down her face mainly because ________.
A.she gave a speech successfully
B.the graduation ceremony was over
C.she was so nervous that she couldn’t help crying
D.she was touched to find her father cared about her

根据文章第一段“He was a man of few words, tall but slim and nothing else. (他是个寡言少语的人,个子高,但很瘦,仅此而已。)”可知,他是个寡言少语的人,个子高但身材苗条,别的也没有什么特别。故选B。
7.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“ After the ceremony was over and I was about to leave, I suddenly noticed a familiar (熟悉的) looking man sitting in a corner of the hall. It was my father! (仪式结束后,我正要离开,我突然注意到一个熟悉的人坐在大厅的角落里。是我父亲!)”可知,作者的父亲参加了她的高中毕业典礼。故选B。

I was so surprised that I rushed to him with tears running down my face.
根据文章最后一段“For much of my life, I described my father was a cold-blooded man who only cared about his work. But when I thought deeply about this, it was obviously not true. (在我生命中的大部分时间里,我都把父亲描述成一个只关心工作的冷血男人。但当我深入思考时,这显然不是真的)”可知,之前作者认为父亲是个冷血的人,后来才发现事实不是这样。因此this是指“我”父 亲是一个冷血的人。故选A。

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear you will come to China for an internship soon. I’d like to share some basic workplace etiquette with you.
First, you should dress neatly and follow the company’s dress code. It is also very important to be punctual and not be absent from work without reasons. Besides, remember to use polite expressions like “thank you” and “please” when talking with colleagues.
Good manners will help you fit into the team quickly and make a good impression on others.
Wish you a smooth and happy internship in China!
Yours,
