Melinda loved her book The Debbie Skye so much that she felt part of the stories! Sometimes she read in the bathroom — even in the neighbor’s doghouse!
Melinda hoped to be like Debbie. Debbie always had a problem to solve! Melinda’s number of problems? Zero.
When she finished the last page, a loud sound came from the kitchen.
“Hey! Who ate all the chocolates?!” Mom called out.
She ran into the kitchen. “This is a problem!”
“Sure! And I’m working on it!” Melinda looked around. No foot marks. No notes.
She wrote a name list. Mom was the first.
“Mom, you were in the kitchen with the empty box. That looks strange.”
“It wasn’t me! I just got home. I didn’t have time,” Mom laughed.
Mom had a reason, so Melinda crossed out Mom’s name.
Next was brother Milo. She found him in his room. “Where were you between 7:00 and 7:30?”
“Huh? Maybe you should look at yourself,” he said.
She saw a piece of paper from candy out of Milo’s pocket. But it was an empty pack of candies.
Two names were crossed out. Dad must be the one!
She ran to the living room. Dad was watching TV.
“You didn’t eat much. You must be hungry now. Did you eat the chocolates?”
“I had ice cream. I asked you to have some.” Dad answered.
Melinda checked the fridge — half a box of ice cream. Dad’s story was true.
“You’re not a criminal,” she said.
“There is someone you forgot,” Dad laughed.
She had asked everyone except the dog.
“Was it you?!”
The dog jumped up and kissed her. He didn’t have chocolate breath. Besides, dogs die after eating chocolate, and he was not sick.
Melinda felt she had failed. “I’ll never be like Debbie,” she thought.
In the bathroom, she saw herself in the mirror. Chocolate on her teeth!
“I did it!” she shouted. “I did it!”
“You sure did,” Mom laughed.
“That’s right,” Melinda said. “I solved the problem!”

24. What can we learn from the ending of the story?
A. Chocolate is bad for your teeth. B. Sometimes we forget self-check.

C
China is a country with many great bridges. Among them, two famous bridges show the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people: the Zhaozhou Bridge and the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge.
The Zhaozhou Bridge was built about 1,400 years ago in Hebei Province. It is the oldest stone arch (拱形的) bridge in the world. The bridge was designed by a clever man named Li Chun. At that time, people thought it was impossible to build such a long bridge without big piers (石墩) in the river. But Li Chun made a great design. He used a single big arch and two small side arches. This made the bridge strong and safe. It also helped water pass through easily during floods. The bridge is still standing today after over a thousand years. It tells us how smart and hard-working the ancient Chinese people were.
The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is another great wonder. It was built in 1957, more than 1,300 years after the Zhaozhou Bridge. It is the first bridge over the Yangtze River. The bridge has two levels: the top level is for cars and buses, and the bottom level is for trains. Before this bridge was built, people had to take ferries (渡船) to cross the river. It was slow and dangerous. Thousands of workers and engineers worked day and night for several years to finish it. Their hard work made it possible to integrate the north and south parts of China.
From the old stone bridge to the modern steel bridge, we can see these bridges are not just roads over water — they are symbols of Chinese wisdom and hard work.
26. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling stories. B. By asking questions.
C. By giving examples. D. By showing numbers.
27. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指代)?
A. B. C. D.
28. What did the arches help the Zhaozhou Bridge do?
① Made it strong and safe. ② Made it the oldest bridge.
③ Helped workers build it faster. ④ Helped water pass through easily.
A. ①② B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ②④
29. What does the underlined word “integrate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. connect B. compare C. protect D. develop
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The engineers spend a long time building bridges.
B. The bridges play an important part in our daily life.
C. Chinese people never stop creating and working hard.
D. Ancient builders showed great wisdom and hard work.

Have you ever wondered how parents in different countries raise their children? Their methods can be very different. Let’s take a look at some interesting examples from around the world.
In China, parents put a high value on education. They often ask their children to finish homework before playing and encourage them to develop hobbies, such as reading, sports, or music. For example, a typical Chinese student may study for one or two hours after school, then play basketball or practice the piano. Parents believe that working hard and having a balanced (平衡的) life lead to a good future.
In Japan, parents’ focus is on independence and responsibility. Japanese children learn to clean their own classrooms at school. They also serve lunch to their classmates. At home, even young kids help with chores like washing dishes, folding clothes, or taking out the trash. These daily tasks teach them to work together and take care of their environment.
In Finland, parents take a very relaxed approach. They encourage their children to spend a lot of time outside, climbing trees, riding bikes, or playing in the snow. Schools give little homework, so kids have more time for art, music, and sports. Finnish parents want kids to be creative and happy.
Although parenting styles are different, all parents share one thing: love for their children. Each method has its own strengths. No matter where we are from, we can learn good things from different ways of raising children.
