Indonesia will ban social media for children under 16, an official of Communication and Digital Affairs said on Friday. In a statement to media, the official said that she just signed a government regulation that will mean children under the age of 16 can no longer have accounts on high-risk digital platforms.
“The basis is clear. Our children face increasingly real threats. From cyberbullying, online fraud, and most importantly addiction. The government is here so that parents no longer have to fight alone against the giant of algorithms (算法),” the official said. She added that the government is taking this step as the best effort in the face of the digital emergency to regain control over children’s futures.
“We realize that the implementation of this regulation may cause some discomfort at first. Children may complain and parents may be confused about how to respond to their children’s complaints,” the official said.
Residents and parents in Jakarta welcomed the government’s restrictions (限制) on access to social media, especially because children have access (机会) to social media through mobile phones. “I think that it has been very worrying for minors, especially children. Because they have too much freedom with photos, videos and everything. Some education is educational, but some is misleading. So we really need to sort through social media again,” said Marianah, a resident in Jakarta. Others suggested that the government should also block other harmful websites.
Indonesia will be the first country in Southeast Asia to restrict the access of children social media. The restriction of social media access for teens began in Australia in December2025. Social media companies have revoked access to about 4.7 million accounts identified as belonging to children in Australia. Other countries, including Spain, France, and the UK are also taking or are considering measures to restrict minors’ access to social media amid growing concern that children are being harmed by exposure to unregulated social media content.
1.Why did Indonesia carry out the regulation?
A.To limit adults’ phone use. B.To follow other countries’ example.
C.To protect children from online harm. D.To reduce the number of social media users.
2.What attitude does Marianah have to the regulation?
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Negative.
3.What does the underlined word “revoked” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Created. B.Cancelled. C.Missed. D.Recorded.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Parents in Indonesia fight against algorithms together
B.There are many harmful contents worrying the world
C.Many countries stop children from using social media
D.Indonesia will limit children’s use of social media
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.D
根据第二段“The basis is clear. Our children face increasingly real threats. From cyberbullying, online fraud, and most importantly addiction. The government is here so that parents no longer have to fight alone against the giant of algorithms.(依据很明确。我们的孩子面临着日益真实的威胁。来自网络欺凌、网络诈骗,最重要的是还有成瘾问题。政府出台这项政策是为了让父母不再需要独自对抗算法巨头)”可知,印度尼西亚实施这项规定是为了保护儿童免受网络伤害。
2.推理判断题。根据第四段“I think that it has been very worrying for minors, especially children. Because they have too much freedom with photos, videos and everything. Some education is educational, but some is misleading. So we really need to sort through social media again,(我认为这对未成年人,尤其是儿童来说,一直非常令人担忧。因为他们在照片、视频和所有事情上拥有太多自由。有些内容是有教育意义的,但有些是误导性的。所以我们确实需要重新整顿社交媒体)”可知,Marianah认为需要整顿社交媒体,对这项限制规定持支持态度。
3.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“The restriction of social media access for teens began in Australia in December2025. Social media companies have revoked access to about 4.7 million accounts identified as belonging to children in Australia.(澳大利亚于2025年12月开始限制青少年使用社交媒体。社交媒体公司已经revoked了约470万个被确认属于澳大利亚儿童的账户的访问权限)”结合限制青少年使用社交媒体这一背景,可推测revoked意为“撤销、取消”,与cancelled同义。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段“Indonesia will ban social media for children under 16, an official of Communication and Digital Affairs said on Friday.(通信和数字事务部的一名官员周五表示,印度尼西亚将禁止16岁以下儿童使用社交媒体。)”
The Amazon in the heart of South America and the Atlantic rainforests on the east coast of the continent are separated by hundreds of miles of dry forest and savanna (稀树草原) that are too difficult for most rainforest trees to survive. Despite this gap, the two ecosystems share many different species of tree.
It was previously supposed that the trees bridged this gap during historical periods when the region was much wetter and more forgiving to passing trees.
Off the back of new research, a new theory has sprung up: The forests of the Atlantic rainforest are constantly occupied by trees from the Amazon. They do this by growing and spreading along the river, which acts like a hidden “highway” between the two separated ecosystems.
“Rather than tree species being exchanged during specific wetter periods in the past, we found that they have dispersed consistently over time,” Dr James Nicholls, lead study author, said in a statement. “This probably happens slowly, by generations of trees growing along the ‘highways’ provided by rivers that run through Brazil’s dry ecosystems,” added Dr Nicholls.
The researchers came to this conclusion by studying the genetics of 164 species of Inga tree, which are common in Latin American rainforests. Their DNA was used to reconstruct the “family tree” of the plants showing the team when each species split from its numerous ancestors and their pattern of movement across the continent. Researchers identified 16 to 20 instances of species migrating from the Amazon to the Atlantic Forest and successfully taking root.
The study highlights how the natural world does not respect the national borders set by homo sapiens (智人). These ecosystems are deeply connected, frequently spreading between countries with regardless of border checks and passports. This view, the team says, could have huge importance for the conservation of the rainforests in South America and the rest of the world.
1.What can we learn from the old theory of tree migration?
A.It depended on genetic data. B.It stressed slow river spread.
C.It proved species connection. D.It assumed wetter past periods.
2.How do trees from the Amazon reach the Atlantic rainforest according to the new theory?
A.By using wind movement. B.By getting human assistance.
C.By following river highways. D.By relying on animal migration.
3.What does the underlined word “dispersed” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Spread. B.Increased. C.Reduced. D.Disappeared.
4.What does the study suggest people do for rainforest conservation?
A.Focus only on the Amazon. B.Cooperate across countries.
C.Protect each forest separately. D.Ignore national borders entirely.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A 4.B
根据第二段“It was previously supposed that the trees bridged this gap during historical periods when the region was much wetter and more forgiving to passing trees.(以往人们认为树木是在该地区更湿润的历史时期跨越这片阻隔地带的。)”
根据第三段中“They do this by growing and spreading along the river, which acts like a hidden “highway” between the two separated ecosystems.(它们沿着河流生长扩散,河流如同两大独立生态系统间隐秘的“高速通道”。)”
根据第四段中“Rather than tree species being exchanged during specific wetter periods in the past, we found that they have dispersed consistently over time,” Dr James Nicholls, lead study author, said in a statement. “This probably happens slowly, by generations of trees growing along the ‘highways’ provided by rivers that run through Brazil’s dry ecosystems,” added Dr Nicholls.(该研究的主要作者詹姆斯·尼科尔斯博士在一份声明中指出:“我们发现,树种并非在过去特定的湿润时期才进行交流,而是随着时间的推移持续不断地dispersed。”
根据最后一段“The study highlights how the natural world does not respect the national borders set by homo sapiens (智人). These ecosystems are deeply connected, frequently spreading between countries with regardless of border checks and passports. This view, the team says, could have huge importance for the conservation of the rainforests in South America and the rest of the world.(这项研究强调了自然界并不尊重智人所设定的国界。这些生态系统紧密相连,经常跨越国界传播,完全无视边境检查和护照。研究团队表示,这一观点可能对南美洲乃至全世界雨林的保护工作具有重大意义。)”可知,雨林生态跨国相连,保护雨林需要各国跨界合作。
Recent research reveals the harmful mental health effects caused by social media use, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal ( 与自杀相关的) tendencies and self-harm. Adolescents who spend more than three hours per day on social media face twice the risk of poor mental health outcomes.
Addictive feeds — designed to make use of personal data to intensify (增强) users’ content that will keep them on the platform for as long as possible — have dramatically raised the risk to young users’ well-being and made our children addicted to these social media outlets.
In the first seven years after addictive feeds were introduced, suicide rates for 10-to 14-year-old girls doubled and hospitalization for suicidal tendencies and attempts increased nearly twice for all adolescents.
Instead of responding to the problem, social media have made great efforts to keep and capture user engagement, and the results have been catastrophic. Beyond the direct harm of social media addiction, the collection of children’s data by these giant companies puts our kids at huge risk, leaving them vulnerable (易受伤害的) by having their location and other personal data tracked, shared and sold online. As a consequence, that data is at greater risk of falling into the wrong hands — including. human traffickers, identity thieves and others who might prey on (坑害) young people.
We will not stand by (支持) and watch an arms race among social media mega-corporations (大型企业) over who can best profit from our children’s pain and addiction. That is why we should use and are using every tool at our fingertips to fight back against these damaging practices: from the courthouse to the statehouse.
1.What can we learn about addictive feeds?
A.They are food that can easily satisfy people.
B.They are Internet content that can get people addicted.
C.They are kept on the platform just for a short period of time.
D.They are personal data stored on the Internet for convenience.
2.Which of the following best describes the author’s purpose in mentioning statistics(数据) such as “suicide rates for 10-to 14-year-old girls doubled”?
A.To create an emotional response in the reader.
B.To show how effective social media has become at keeping users engaged.
C.To offer a balanced view of the effects of social media on young people.
D.To provide evidence that supports the argument about social media’s harmful effects.
3.Which word can best replace the underlined word “catastrophic” in paragraph 4?
A.destructive B.positive C.unique D.effective
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.It emphasizes the author’s support for social media companies.
B.It describes positive effects of social media on children’s well-being.
C.It explains how social media companies can address the mental health issues.
D.It calls for increased control on social media companies to protect young users.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.D

I really liked Julia from my first day of high school. As a shy freshman, I watched her with quiet admiration. She laughed easily and drew classmates to her like a magnet (磁铁). Julia spoke confidently in class, making complex (复杂的) topics sound simple. I wished I could be that outgoing. I wanted to be her friend, but didn’t know how to start. Every time I thought about talking to her, my words got stuck. Would someone so popular want to be friends with someone like me? I practiced greetings before my mirror, but they never sounded right. Her world seemed too bright for me to enter.
Everything changed last Friday during an English class. Julia gave a speech that moved everyone. Her voice was clear and her stories were wonderful. Feeling brave. I wrote her a note during break: “Your speech was amazing! I really want to be your friend. From Mary.” When the bell rang, I saw her packing her bag. “Julia,” I said nervously, “this is for you.” I handed her the note. She smiled and said “Thank you”, then quickly put it in her English book before hurrying to her next class.
Two weeks passed without any reply. I felt sad and confused. Did I do something wrong? Was my note not good enough? Finally, I decided to ask her directly. Gathering every bit of my courage, I walked to the library after my last class. I found Julia studying in the library, her head buried in a thick textbook. Seeing her there, looking just as ordinary and focused as I felt, gave me the final push I needed.

“Hi,” I said quietly, “did you get my note?” She looked up, surprised. “What note?” Julia asked, looking confused. I explained, “I gave you a note two weeks ago, saying I wanted to be friends with you.” Just then, she opened her English book, and the note fell out. “Oh no,” she gasped, picking it up. “I put it here and completely forgot! I’m so sorry, Mary. I’ve been busy with exams and didn’t see it.” “Oh, my dear…” Her voice was soft, and tears came to her eyes.
“Oh, Mary! It was all a misunderstanding!” Julia explained, her voice filled with apology (歉意).“I would love to be your friend! Your note means so much to me.” She smiled warmly and took my hands. “Let’s talk more now. Maybe we can study together or hang out this weekend?” I nodded happily, my heart full of joy. That day, I learned that friendship isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being brave enough to reach out.

Every time my son came home from college, he would make our house a terrible mess: dirty clothes, unwashed cups, the unmade bed, and so on. It really 1 me.
This past summer, I talked frankly with my son, trying to figure out his behavior. I was getting angry again about the 2 house. He apologized and said it wasn’t his 3 to drive me crazy; instead, he was being self-involved, and his 4 to do what I asked had nothing to do with me.
He likely hadn’t even 5 half the times I’d asked him to clean up. Each time the task went undone, I grew angrier until I eventually 6 my mind. My son was often truly 7 about why I was so mad. It turned out that the clueless look on his face was real — he wasn’t 8 .
That conversation was a game-changer as I began to 9 what was really going on. My idea that he was intentionally trying to annoy me 10 . The next day, I set a few simple rules, helpfully backed by a(n) 11 — access to the family car — and aimed for peace over perfection.

Although certainly not perfect, my new approach showed many signs of positive change. I was so grateful for that 14 . You never know how a tricky issue can be solved in such a(n) 15 way. Sometimes, solutions are surprisingly simple.
