We’ve all seen this happen in a science-fiction movie: The super heroes jump into a shaky spaceship and escape the bad guys by flying through the asteroid (小行星) belt, where huge rocks fall and spin (旋转) so close that the crew has to duck and dive to avoid being broken into pieces. It’s exciting, but it’s wrong: In our solar system, the odds are pretty good that you could stand on the surface of an asteroid and not even be able to see another.
Yet they do interact if given enough time. Even in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, crashes are ineluctable. And when two space rocks go “crash” in the main belt, big impacts blow lots of asteroid fragments (碎片) out into space.
In many cases, these fragments stay on much the same orbital path as the parent asteroid, although they gradually separate from it because of slight speed differences. After thousands of years, some fragments might be clear across the Sun, but their distance from the Sun and the shape and direction of their orbits remain similar. Such conserved features are collectively called an asteroid’s orbital elements. The groupings sharing orbital elements are identified as “families”, which are named after the largest asteroid in the group.
Studying asteroids by focusing on their families can help us make a good guess about what properties a newly-found one has if it belongs to a better-studied family. Care must be taken, though. Some very large asteroids have differentiated materials in the center and on the surface, so confirming those guesses usually requires taking spectra (光谱), the time-consuming process of breaking an object’s incoming light into individual colors to reveal its composition.
It’s more than a mere academic exercise to find this particular branch of an asteroid family tree: Some asteroids are potentially risky, meaning they could crash with Earth some time in the distant future. If we know how they find their way to the inner solar system from the main belt to pose threats in the first place, we can defend our planet from future worrisome asteroids.
24. What is the author’s view on the scene in the sci-fi movie?
A. It ignores the special visual effects.
B. It goes against the established facts.
C. It overestimates the super heroes’ role.
D. It fuels people’s interest in the asteroid.
25. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “ineluctable” in paragraph 2?
A. Unlikely. B. Uncommon. C. Unavoidable. D. Unimportant.
26. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The formation of asteroid families. B. The definition of orbital elements.
C. The moving pattern of asteroid fragments. D. The naming rule of asteroid groups.
27. What can be inferred about the study of asteroid family?
A. It is a high-risk practice.
B. It is built on assumptions.
C. Its range needs to be expanded.
D. Its value can’t be overstated.

Vivian learned to read and write English at just two years old before her family moved to PEI, Canada, where she attended a public school.
Vivian says her love for learning came from her grandmother, a high school biology teacher. “She taught me at a very young age. We’d go to the park and she would make up a game and I wouldn’t even know that I was learning,” she tells the local newspaper Charlottetown Guardian. Vivian hoped for grade-skipping due to her excellence in all subjects. Her parents have been supportive of her drive to seek knowledge. However, the school officials were concerned that she wouldn’t keep up socially with her older classmates if she were to skip more than one grade. Then, she wrote to the newspaper.
“Imagine you are playing an exciting video game. You defeat the boss and are ready to move on to the next stage. However, you discover that the game requires you to wait until every other player has finished. Imagine the boredom you would experience and the loss of desire to play afterwards,” she wrote in the letter. “In our current educational system, this is how it works. Kids should be allowed to fly when they’re ready.”
Vivian moved with her family from PEI to Halifax, and at a private school there, after several tests, teachers placed her in Grade 8 from fourth grade. After a brief high school career in British Columbia, she returned to PEI to attend university, where she hoped to gain the skills to become a veterinarian (兽医). Vivian was just 12 when she began her university studies — and is on track to finish a biology degree before she can get behind the wheel of a car.
So far, university has been no sweat for Vivian. She finished her first semester with grades above 91 percent. Now, at 13, she has just wrapped her first year at the University of Prince Edward Island.
28. How did Vivian’s grandmother educate her at a young age?
A. She led her to study unconsciously.
B. She set a good example for her.
C. She was supportive of her choices.
D. She forced her to learn from childhood.
29. Why did Vivian mention playing a video game in her letter?
A. To illustrate an idea.
B. To clarify a concept.
C. To propose a solution.
D. To make an assumption.
30. What was Vivian’s purpose in moving from PEI to Halifax?
A. To get her biology degree.
B. To study as a veterinarian.
C. To skip grades successfully.
D. To stick to her hobby freely.
31. What lesson can we learn from Vivian’s story?
A. Learning at an early age can be harder.
B. School systems should be more flexible.
C. Self-acceptance depends on self-pride.
D. School education equals home studying.
D
The convenience of modern life is nothing short of astonishing. As I write this, some of the greatest hits are being sent to my phone. I could also hire a taxi, or have food delivered to my house within moments. The fact that, as a culture, we celebrate such short cuts is understandable. Yet most people are able to sense that convenience has a darker side.
We often resist (抵抗) doing the things we need to do in order to make progress. Behind every plan lies this horrible sense of Inertia (惰性). Why is this resistance — and our desire for ease — such an essential part of our nature? The idea of “Evolutionary Mismatch” can explain. It is the idea that we evolved (进化) for a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and that while our society has changed completely, our brains and bodies haven’t.
For hunter-gatherers, rest was essential to balance their periods of intense activity, such as hunting in the rain or escaping from danger. It’s the reason we still ask: “Do I really have to be doing this? Shouldn’t I save my energy?” During snowstorms, when there was little chance to hunt for animals, the hunters who chose to stay in the caves were more likely to live and pass on their genes and we’ve inherited (继承) that way of living.
Since then, we’ve invented technology and changed our environments to serve our nature to save energy. The questions are: is it a trap (陷阱)? What do we lose by following our nature to prioritize (优先考虑) comfort and convenience?
Continually choosing the convenient path weakens your ability to deal with unavoidable difficulties. And, from an evolutionary point of view, some measure of discomfort is just as important to our survival as rest and relaxation. Our ancestors (祖先) didn’t survive simply by being lazy, but through a combination of playing it safe and taking necessary risks: for example, pushing through the pain and effort of leaving a familiar home, in order to find a place closer to sources of food and better protected from the threats.
It is this difficulty itself that shapes and develops our character. In the technological world, we must sometimes make an effort to act in opposition to our nature. As a culture, we must remember that while convenience feels good in the moment, our ability to adapt and overcome challenges is part of our evolutionary inheritance too.
32. What can we learn about “inertia” in paragraph 2?
A. It is a sign of laziness that should be overcome.
B. It is a natural tendency to resist necessary effort.
C. It is caused by the convenience of modern life.
D. It disappears when practical plans are made.
33. “Evolutionary Mismatch” in paragraph 2 means the imbalance between ______.
A. personal goals and social expectations
B. human nature and the modern environment
C. modern conveniences and ancient challenges
D. the resistance to progress and the hunter-gatherer lifestyle
34. According to the text, prioritizing convenience in modern life may ______.
A. slow down technological advances
B. do damage to our physical health
C. cause over-dependence on technology
D. harm our ability to overcome challenges
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Convenience Trap: The Dark Side of Modern Life
B. Refusing Comfort: The Only Path to Personal Growth
C. Evolutionary Mismatch: Why Our Brains Haven’t Caught Up
D. The Selfish Gene: How Evolution Shapes Our Desire for Ease

The Science Of Scratching
Mom knew what she was talking about after all: Scratching really does make the itch worse. Good ____56____ it feels, the burst of ecstasy (狂喜) you get from clawing your irritated skin only prolongs a vicious itch-scratch cycle, putting true relief ____57____(far) out of reach.
But why? Though itch has troubled our species for thousands of years, scientists have just begun to comprehend the physiological mechanisms ____58____it. Over the past couple of decades, research has shown ____59____ scratching taps into our brains’ reward and immune systems, producing a strange mix of sensations that makes it all but impossible to resist.
“You scratch to feel better,” says Brian Kim, a neuroimmunologist at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine, “but in doing so, you actually activate immune pathways that are counterproductive.”
In 1660, a definition of itch arose that’s still in use today: an unpleasant sensation that provokes the desire to scratch. It results from ____60____ from insect bites and poisonous plants to allergic reactions and skin conditions like eczema (湿疹).
Until recently, itch was considered a form of mild pain ____61____ (arise) from the weak activation of pain receptors. This “intensity theory” speculated that itch stood at one end of the pain spectrum, and ____62____ (transition) all the way to full-blown suffering as a stimulus grew stronger.
But in 2014, Zhou-Feng Chen, an itch researcher then at Washington University, discovered that serotonin (the mood-regulating “happiness hormone”) plays a big role in perpetuating (使永久) the itch-scratch cycle. The research team found that when mice scratch an itch, their brains release a surge of serotonin, resulting in a moment of pure bliss.
These results were consistent with a PLOS One study from the previous year, which showed that scratching activates the brain regions ____63____ (involve) in the reward circuit, a neural network that floods the body with euphoria-inducing chemicals in response to pleasurable activities and substances. It’s the same system ____64____ underlies addiction, which isn’t surprising if you’ve ever lost an hour scratching at mosquito bites.
But Kim notes there’s another side to this coin: the longing not to feel pleasure ____65____ to ease discomfort. “That’s what’s so complex about it,” he says. “There are different levels at which you need to scratch.”

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Green, followed by a plain-looking boy.
“This is Ben,” Ms. Green announced. “He is a transfer student, and he’s going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn’t want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing,” Ms. Green spoke up. “Ben actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Ben insisted on attending his first day of school. But don’t worry — he speaks beautifully and can talk to all of you. So if you want to communicate with him, just write down your words on a piece of paper, and he’ll be happy to talk with you.”
This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar: Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms. Green calmed everyone down. “I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent?” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Green’s.
“How about you, Justin?” she asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Ben just for today?”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Green gestured for Ben to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para 1: Immediately, the class became excited.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2: Then Ben rose and walked onto the platform.

I believe it can make a big difference if we all take action.

M: Yeah, it’s causing quite a shock in the advertisement industry. Everyone in our company is talking about how it might influence our traditional advertisement methods.
W: Exactly. With Sora’s ability to create videos from text, some people are worried that it will disturb the market for traditional video production and advertising agencies.
M: Well, there are also concerns about creativity. True, video has begun to improve at a surprising pace. Companies like Runway and Pika have shown text-to-video models of their own, and Google’s Lumiere is one of OpenAI’s primary competitors in this space. Similar to Sora, Lumiere gives users text-to-video tools and also lets them create videos from a still image.
W: It’s definitely something we need to keep an eye on, as it could reshape the advertising landscape significantly.
M: We’ll need to adapt and find ways to use this technology, making it work to our advantage.

B 25. C 26. A 27. D
根据第一段中“It’s exciting, but it’s wrong: In our solar system, the odds are pretty good that you could stand on the surface of an asteroid and not even be able to see another.(这很刺激,但这是错误的:在我们的太阳系中,你很有可能站在一颗小行星的表面而甚至看不到另一颗小行星。)”
根据第二段中“Yet they do interact if given enough time. Even in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, crashes are ineluctable.(然而,如果给它们足够的时间,它们确实会互动。即使在火星和木星轨道之间的小行星带,碰撞也是ineluctable。)”以及“when two space rocks go “crash” in the main belt(当两块太空岩石在主带中“撞击”时)”可知,小行星在长时间下会发生相互作用,并讲述了两块岩石撞击的情况,由此可推测出,碰撞应该是必然会发生的。ineluctable意为“不可避免的”,与unavoidable意思相近。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“In many cases, these fragments stay on much the same orbital path as the parent asteroid, although they gradually separate from it because of slight speed differences. After thousands of years, some fragments might be clear across the Sun, but their distance from the Sun and the shape and direction of their orbits remain similar. Such conserved features are collectively called an asteroid’s orbital elements. The groupings sharing orbital elements are identified as “families”, which are named after the largest asteroid in the group.(在许多情况下,这些碎片与母小行星保持在大致相同的轨道上,尽管由于速度略有不同,它们会逐渐与母小行星分离。数千年后,一些碎片可能会完全在太阳对面,但它们与太阳的距离以及轨道的形状和方向仍然相似。这些保存下来的特征统称为小行星的轨道要素。共享轨道要素的组合被确定为“家族”,以该组合中最大的小行星命名。)”可知,本段主要讲述了小行星碰撞产生碎片,碎片因保留相似的轨道要素而形成“小行星家族”的过程,即小行星家族的形成。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“It’s more than a mere academic exercise... we can defend our planet from future worrisome asteroids.(这不仅仅是单纯的学术练习……我们可以保卫我们的星球免受未来令人担忧的小行星的威胁。)”可知,对小行星家族的研究不仅具有学术意义,更重要的是它能帮助我们了解威胁地球的小行星的来源,从而保卫地球。由此推断,这项研究的价值极其重要。

A 29. A 30. C 31. B

根据第三段“Imagine you are playing an exciting video game. You defeat the boss and are ready to move on to the next stage. However, you discover that the game requires you to wait until every other player has finished. Imagine the boredom you would experience and the loss of desire to play afterwards, (想象一下:你正玩着一款扣人心弦的电子游戏,击败Boss后正准备进入下一关。可你却发现,游戏要求你必须等其他所有玩家都完成当前关卡后才能继续。想想你会感到多么乏味,之后也彻底失去了继续玩下去的兴致,)”描述薇薇安信中用打游戏通关却要等待其他玩家的类比,以及后文“In our current educational system, this is how it works. Kids should be allowed to fly when they’re ready. (我们当下的教育体系就是这样运作的。应该允许准备好的孩子展翅高飞。)”可知,她提到电子游戏是为了形象地阐明自己对教育制度的观点。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“However, the school officials were concerned that she wouldn’t keep up socially with her older classmates if she were to skip more than one grade.
B 33. B 34. D 35. A
根据第二段中“We often resist doing the things we need to do in order to make progress. Behind every plan lies this horrible sense of Inertia. Why is this resistance — and our desire for ease — such an essential part of our nature?(我们经常抵抗做那些为了取得进步而需要做的事情。每个计划背后都隐藏着这种可怕的惰性。为什么这种抵抗——以及我们对安逸的渴望——是我们本性中如此重要的一部分)”可知,inertia“惰性”是一种抵抗必要努力的自然倾向。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“The idea of “Evolutionary Mismatch” can explain. It is the idea that we evolved (进化) for a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and that while our society has changed completely, our brains and bodies haven’t.(进化错配理论可以对此作出解释。该理论认为,人类的身体与大脑仍适配原始狩猎采集的生存模式,可人类社会已然发生翻天覆地的改变)”可知,Evolutionary Mismatch“进化错位”指的是人类本性与现代环境之间的不平衡。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Continually choosing the convenient path weakens your ability to deal with unavoidable difficulties.(持续选择便捷的道路会削弱你应对不可避免的困难的能力)”可知,在现代生活中优先考虑便利可能会损害我们克服挑战的能力。
因此最佳标题是“Convenience Trap: The Dark Side of Modern Life(便利陷阱:现代生活的黑暗面)”。

56. as##though
57. farther
58. behind 59. that
60. everything
61. arising
62. would transition
63. involved
64. that 65. but
根据“Good ____ it feels”和后文“only prolongs a vicious itch-scratch cycle”可知,前后为让步关系,as/though引导让步状语从句时需部分倒装,即“Good as/though it feels”。
根据前文“prolongs a vicious itch-scratch cycle”可知,抓挠会让缓解变得更加遥远,应用副词比较级修饰“out of reach”。
根据“from insect bites and poisonous plants to allergic reactions and skin conditions like eczema (湿疹).”
此处为强调句型“It is...that...”,强调the same system。
此处为not… but…

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para 1: Immediately, the class became excited.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2: Then Ben rose and walked onto the platform.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Immediately, the class became excited. Everyone was eager to share their holiday adventures, but I was nervous about how I would communicate with Ben. I wrote down my holiday story on a piece of paper and passed it to him. To my surprise, he read it quickly and wrote back, “Your holiday sounds amazing! I went to the beach too, but I spent most of the time reading books.” His handwriting was neat and his words were thoughtful. I realized that communication wasn’t as difficult as I had thought. Near the end of the class, Ms. Green asked Ben to share his holiday with us.
Then Ben rose and walked onto the platform. He took a deep breath and began to share his holiday experience. “I went to the beach and read a lot of books,” he wrote on the board. “I also learned how to surf, which was challenging but fun.” The class was amazed by his bravery and determination. After his presentation, everyone clapped and cheered for him. I felt proud of Ben and glad that I had the chance to help him. I learned that a person’s abilities are not defined by their disabilities, and that everyone has something unique to offer.
