B During the holiday, I went with my parents to visit my grandparents in the countryside. When Grandma said she had been busy with farm work, I decided right away to stay overnight at her house. The thought of planting vegetables and watering the fields made me really excited. That night, I could hardly fall asleep. “Sweetie, time to get up.” Grandma’s soft voice woke me up. I looked at the clock—it was only 5:30 in the morning! I asked, “Grandma, why do we have to get up so early?” “Because the hens just laid their eggs, Han Lin. Now is the best time to collect them,” she explained. The morning air was cool and fresh. But as we walked toward the chicken house, a strong, unpleasant smell came out. I held my breath and followed Grandma. She opened a small window and reminded me, “You have to be quick but gentle. Don’t scare the hens.” I saw a hen guarding two large eggs on the straw. Her sharp mouth looked a bit scary. I took a deep breath and slowly reached out my hand. Suddenly, the hen stood up! I let out a small cry but quickly picked up the eggs before she could hurt me. The eggs felt warm in my hands— so different from the cold ones we usually take out of the fridge. Later, we watered and fertilized(施肥)the vegetables in the fields, picked two pumpkins, and collected a big basket of tomatoes. By the time Grandma called, “Han Lin, dinner is ready!”, I was already sound asleep on the sofa. When I finally sat down to enjoy the simple meal, I realized for the first time that every dish was the fruit of hard work. I had not only helped on the farm but learned to respect the hard work behind our food. 5. Why did Han Lin stay at her grandma’s house? A. To taste fresh farm food. B. To look after grandparents. C. To prepare for a school project. D. To help with busy farm work. 6. Which is the right order of the following events? a. Han Lin fertilized the vegetables. b. Han Lin picked up the warm eggs. c. Han Lin felt quite surprised. B. Han Lin was a little scared. C. Han Lin expressed her excitement. D. Han Lin wanted help from Grandma. 8. How did Han Lin feel when she had dinner at the end of the story? A. Moved by Grandma’s love. B. Too tired to enjoy a meal. C. Respectful of farmers’ work. D. Happy about the fresh food. C Hedgehogs (刺猬) are small, cute wild animals that live in many parts of Europe and Asia. These quiet little animals usually come out at night to search for food in parks and gardens. Sadly, their numbers are dropping fast. A new report shows that their population in the British countryside has reduced by 75% in just over 20 years. Cars are one of the biggest dangers, as nearly one-third of hedgehogs are killed while crossing busy roads. To help protect them, a new study has found a special “superpower” of these animals. Scientists studied 20 hedgehogs from animal care centers to see how their brains responded to high sounds. They found that hedgehogs have amazing hearing, and they are able to pick up sounds between 4 and 85 kHz. Humans can only hear sounds up to 20 kHz. Interestingly, dogs can hear up to 45 kHz and cats up to 65 kHz. This means hedgehogs can hear very high sounds that humans, dogs, and cats are all unable to hear. Dr. Sophie Lund Rasmussen from the University of Oxford led the study. She plans to make small devices (设备) that make special high sounds. These devices could be put on cars. The sound would scare hedgehogs away before they get too close, but it would not trouble humans or other pets at all. The study also finds something interesting. Hedgehogs may actually “talk” to each other with high sounds that are hidden from human ears. “Imagine they are communicating all the time in a voice we can never hear,” said Rasmussen. With this new information, scientists hope to turn their natural hearing ability into a powerful tool for protecting them better. 9. Why does the number of hedgehogs drop fast according to Paragraph 1? A. They are being kept as pets. B. They are hunted in the countryside. C. They don’t have enough food in parks. D. They are killed by cars on busy roads. 10. What does the underlined phrase “superpower” refer to in Paragraph 2? A. Hearing very high sounds B. Coming out at night. C. Living quietly in gardens D. Talking to other animals. 11. Which device will Dr. Rasmussen use to protect hedgehogs? A. B. C. D. 12. What might scientists study in the future? A. The influence of noise on daily pets. B. The different ways animals talk with humans. C. How to create more living space for wild hedgehogs. D. How to use hedgehogs’ hearing ability to protect them. D ① Sitting through a family dinner, your uncle suddenly starts talking about different topics like an expert. But everything he knows is from TikTok. After exams, one classmate is sure to do well. But he ends up with far lower marks than expected. Sounds familiar? This kind of behavior is called the Dunning-Kruger effect. ② In 1995, a man named Wheeler robbed a bank with lemon juice on his face. He believed it would make him not be seen. This story inspired two psychologists (心理学家) David Dunning and Justin Kruger to do some experiments. They asked people to tell how well they did in certain tasks. The results showed people with poor skills often thought they did much better than they actually did. They failed to see their own shortcomings, which made them too confident. ③ Later, people used a simple graph (图表) to show this effect. It clearly tells us the link between our actual knowledge and our self-confidence. When we know very little about something, our confidence rises to quite a high point. We may even believe we know everything. Digging deeper, we begin to realize how difficult the topic truly is, and our confidence drops. At this point, we start questioning ourselves. Only when we keep learning can our ability and confidence rise in a healthy way. ④ This is not just a psychological phenomenon (现象) for strangers or uncles at dinner — it is a mistake that everyone may easily fall into. Have you ever laughed at your classmates’ mistakes without realizing your own? Have you ever turned a deaf ear to others’ advice because you thought you knew better? Have you ever felt fully prepared, only to be shocked by the final result? If so, you are having it too. ⑤ Dear graduates of 2026, as you are stepping into senior high and then a wider world, remember that real growth lies in the courage to be modest (谦虚). Always remember to learn, feel, and listen, and you will surely shine brighter in the years ahead. 13. Which sentence might be said by the uncle in Paragraph ①? A. “I’m not sure. You’d better go and ask a teacher about this.” B. “Oranges are good for the skin? Let’s check more articles.” C. “This accident has many causes. I may not know the truth.” D. “This war would end fast if they just listened to me.” 14. What do the experiments by Dunning and Kruger show? A. Most people can see their shortcomings, more or less. B. Less skilled people often think highly of themselves. C. A person can tell how well he or she finishes a task. D. Lemon juice doesn’t work for hiding people’s bodies. 15. Who is most likely to be at Point D in the graph? A. A student who is beating self-doubt step by step with hard work. B. A person who feels super confident after taking the first driving lesson. C. A math teacher who feels very lost in the beginning of his teaching. D. An experienced doctor who keeps learning for many years at work. 16. Which of the following can be put in the third box of the structure? A. Listing more results. B. Sharing scientific facts. C. Connecting with readers. D. Discussing different ideas. 第二节 阅读短文,从所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。 Advertising in Ancient China Advertisements are almost everywhere in our lives. Three students from different countries share their ideas. Ivana Nicole Moreno, 16 At my school in the US, some classmates dislike being the center of attention. They stay quiet in class and avoid speaking up. I think pressure is a key reason. When you’re young, being noticed can feel anxious because mistakes are clear to see. Social media makes this feeling stronger. Everyone online seems confident and perfect, making real-life attention more stressful. I’m quite different, though. I enjoy being noticed when I’m doing something I love. This became clear during a Chinese language competition in China, where I happily stood under the stage lights and felt energized by the audience. Johanna Elizabeth, 16 In Germany, being quiet is not a weakness. Students who listen carefully and don’t try to stand out are often seen as serious and reliable (可依靠的). That’s why many young people here avoid attention, including me. Once, I had to present my project in class. Standing in front of everyone made me uncomfortable. I spoke quickly and avoided eye contact. It wasn’t fear—it was the pressure of being watched. This comes from our culture. In German, we value order, teamwork, and modesty (谦虚). For me, confidence means being calm and thoughtful, even without attention. He Liyan, 15 I think there are two main reasons. First, social pressure is increasing. In China, students like us face heavy stress from schoolwork and future expectations. Being noticed often brings more pressure, which can be tiring. Second, young people want to protect their privacy. With the rapid development of the internet, personal information can easily be exposed (暴露), so staying low-key helps avoid unnecessary trouble. I sometimes feel the same way. When I perform poorly on exams, I prefer to stay unnoticed, which helps me relax and feel more comfortable. 41. How does Ivana feel when being noticed while doing what she loves? ____________________________________________________________________ 42. According to Johanna, what is true confidence? ____________________________________________________________________ 43. What two things cause young people to stay low-key according to He Liyan? ____________________________________________________________________ 44.
