A Swiss described a pencil in a book in 1565. He said it was a piece of wood with lead inside it. (Lead is a very heavy, soft, dark gray metal.) Pencils weren’t popular, and people continued to write with pens. They used bird feathers as pens. Then, in 1795, someone started making pencils from graphite (石墨), and they became very popular. One pencil can write 50,000 English words or make a line of 55 kilometers long. People wrote with feather pens and then used pens with metal points. They had to dip (蘸) the point into ink after every few letters. Next someone invented a fountain pen that could hold ink inside it. A fountain pen can write several pages before you have to fill it again. Two Hungarian (匈牙利的) brothers, Ladislao and George Biro, invented the ballpoint pen. English pilots liked the pens. They couldn’t write with fountain pens in airplanes because the ink leaked out. Later, a French company called Bic bought the Biros’ company. Some people call ballpoint pens “Bics.” Australians call them “Biros.” Whatever we call them, we use them every day. 16. Who first described a pencil in a book? A. An Englishman. B. A Swiss. C. A Hungarian. 17. What was inside the first pencil described in the book? A. Ink. B. Lead. C. Graphite. 18. What kind of pens did people use before pencils became popular? A. Feather pens. B. Fountain pens. C. Ballpoint pens. 19. Which of these writing tools appeared first? A. Fountain pens. B. Ballpoint pens. C. Metal point pens. 20. What is the main idea of this passage? A. How pencils and pens have changed over time. B. Different ways to write with pencils and pens. C. Why ballpoint pens are better than other pens. C Have you ever seen a book titled “Can a Fly, Fly?” and wondered what it means? This playful question introduces us to one of the most interesting features of the English language: multi-meaning words. These are words that share the same spelling and pronunciation but can have completely different meanings. Let’s look at some examples. A great place to start is the word “ball”. You could have a “ball” which means you would have a good time. You could toss a “ball” which means you throw an object. You could be on the “ball” which means you know what is happening. You could go to a “ball” which means a dance. Now, let’s try another word “can”. You “can” ride a bike which means you are able to ride a bike. You have a “can” of soup which means the soup is in a round-shaped holder. You can do the “can-can” which is a dance from the 1920s. And you might get “canned” if you do a poor job at work. It means you might lose your job. There are hundreds of words that are multi-meaning words. The word “set” has more meanings than any other word in the English language. When you have time, why don’t you try to think of all the ways the word “set” is used? But what about our book title word “fly”? A pilot can fly an airplane. At a picnic, you might see a fly, which is a common insect. There is also the fly on your pants, which is the part that covers the zipper. So, back to our original question: “Can a Fly, Fly?” Now you understand the joke! The answer is, “Yes, of course!” because a fly (the insect) can indeed fly (move through the air). This is the fun of multi-meaning words! Exploring them helps you understand English better and discover its playful side. 21. What does “multi-” mean in “multi-meaning”? A. Only one. B. More than one. C. Fewer than one. 22. What might Jack do if he is often late for work and fails to finish his work? A. Do the can-can. B. Get canned. C. Be on the ball. 23. According to the passage, which word has the most meanings in the English language? A. Ball. B. Set. C. Fly. 24. How does the writer explain multi-meaning words? A. By giving examples of each word’s meanings. B. By comparing them with other word types. C. By telling stories of daily word use. 25. Why does the writer write the passage? A. To share an experience in learning English. B. To give some examples about learning English. C. To introduce a book about learning English words. D It is widely known that China has the most advanced (先进的) high-speed railway network in the world. Now, the country is breaking its own speed record with the CR450. (CR stands for China Railway). The CR450 can travel at 400 kilometers per hour on average, with a top speed of 453 km/h. Before this, the fastest high-speed train in the world is China’s CR400, which runs at 350 km/h on average. If it is put into use, the CR450 will shorten the travel time from Beijing to Shanghai to just about two and a half hours. It takes at least four and a half hours at the moment. “The key is not to make the train run fast but to have it brake (刹车) accurately and steadily,” Zhao Hongwei of the China Academy of Railway Sciences told CCTV News. Even though the CR450 travels very fast, it should have the same brake distance as the CR400, which is 6 500 meters. It can also start braking more quickly. For example, the CR450 takes just 1.7 seconds compared with the 2.3 seconds needed for the CR400. Besides having a better braking system, the CR450 offers a quieter ride. The noise levels inside the train are lower. Meanwhile, the seats have more space so that passengers can enjoy more comfortable rides. The new train has been tested across several high-speed rail lines in China. It is not yet ready for public use, though. Further tests are needed, said China State Railway Group. All tests are set to be finished in the near future. China has built the world’s largest railway network. The network covers almost all corners of the country. The total rail length has reached over 160,000 kilometres. More than 46,000 kilometres are high-speed rail. The goal is to have 60,000 kilometres of high-speed rail by 2030. 26. What is the average speed of the CR450? A. 350 km/h. B. 400 km/h. C. 453 km/h. 27. How long will the CR450 take to travel from Beijing to Shanghai if it is put into use? A. About 2.5 hours. B. Exactly 3 hours. C. At least 4.5 hours. 28. What did Zhao Hongwei think is the key for high-speed trains? A. Making the train run as fast as possible. B. Making sure the train can brake well. C. Keeping the noise low inside the train. 29. Which of the following is mentioned as an advantage of the CR450? A. It can carry many more passengers. B. It offers a quieter and more comfortable ride. C. It has already shortened passengers’ travel time. 30. What is China’s goal for high-speed rail by 2030? A. To have the world’s fastest train. B. To build the world’s largest railway network. C. To reach 60,000 kilometres of high-speed rail. (二)阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。 E 根据短文内容,从短文后的A~F选项中,选出5个适当的选项补全短文。 What kind of shoes do you wear most? Today, I’d like to share one of the most fun ones — Halloween (万圣节), which falls on October 31st every year. On this day, many people make their houses look scary. They may turn off the lights and light candles. They sometimes also put things like spiders and ghosts (鬼) around the doors and windows. Children can dress up as (装扮成) different cartoon characters, black cats, or even ghosts. My favorite is the dinosaur costume (装束)! There are many fun activities. Here is “Trick or Treat”. On the night of Halloween, children who are dressed in the costumes, go around to houses, knock on people’s doors and shout “Trick or Treat!” That means that if you don’t give them a treat, they’ll play a trick on you. Then, the people inside will give them candies. Besides younger children, older kids also enjoy the night. They often help to give out candies and watch scary movies with friends. Something else that all children do before Halloween is to carve pumpkins (南瓜). We cut open pumpkins, make faces on them with knives, and put lights inside. These are called “Jack-o’-lanterns”. We also bake and eat the pumpkin seeds. They are delicious! Halloween is important because it is a holiday full of creativity and joy. It lets everyone, especially kids, show their imagination. They can be anyone they want to be. Also, who doesn’t love free candies? I really hope one day you can come to America for Halloween and see all the amazing decorations, dress up in a costume, and maybe even carve a pumpkin! Now you are studying in China. Perhaps in your next letter you can tell me about a holiday coming up in China. Monika 56. When do people celebrate Halloween? _________________________________ 57. B. 【答案】21. B 22. B 23. B 24. A 25. C.
