At 4:30 a.m, while most teenagers are still dreaming, 15-year-old Kofi from Ghana has already started his daily work — collecting recyclable waste on the streets. Many people feel pity for him, but Kofi doesn’t see himself as a victim (受害者). Using the money he makes, he buys books and attends night school.
“Cleaning the city and learning in class both make me happy,” he says with shining eyes. Recently, Kofi has designed a simple hand-pushed cart (手推车) that separates plastic, glass and paper while he walks. The invention not only saves time but also increases the value of recycled materials. A local company noticed his invention and offered him a small scholarship (奖学金). “My hands are rough, but my mind is busy. Work is not just about surviving (存活), but it’s also about growing,” Kofi smiles.
Instead, Kofi’s neighbor Mensah, a high school graduate who refuses to take any “dirty job”, sits at home complaining about life. “No good work, no happiness,” Mensah often says. Kofi disagrees. “Happiness doesn’t fall from a great job title. It grows from the soil of honest work, watered by effort.”
Kofi’s story reminds us that true belonging to labor doesn’t mean you must do heavy work but it means you pour your creativity and responsibility into whatever you do. Even a waste collector can turn trash into treasure, and hard work into happiness.
3. For Kofi’s invention, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A. The cart made Kofi win a small scholarship.
B. The cart only increases the value of recycled materials.
C. The cart can separate different kinds of recyclable waste.
4. Why does the writer mention Mensah in Paragraph 3?
A. To show that Kofi has a difficult neighbor.
B. To explain why some people dislike dirty jobs.
C. To make a comparison and present Kofi’s positive attitude.
5. What does the word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Happiness.
B. A great job title.
C. Good work.
6. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A Poor Boy’s Sad Story in Ghana.
B. Happiness Grows from Honest Work.
C. How to Become a Successful Inventor.

Do you know Mo’s Chicken Pot? It is a small restaurant in Guangdong. The owner, Uncle Mo, has run it for six years. Every day, only about 10 tables of customers came. Life was slow and peaceful.
Then one video changed everything. A famous blogger (博主) visited the shop. In the video, Uncle Mo looked worried and said, “If you make my business too good, I can’t deal with it!” This simple sentence became a huge hit. The video got over 150 million views on Douyin.
Soon, things went crazy. People waited in line at 6 a. m. Some drove 2,000 kilometers and even slept in their cars just to try the chicken pot. Daily customers jumped from 10 to 200. Uncle Mo became tired of it. But here’s the strangest part—the more he tried to refuse customers, the more people came.
Uncle Mo’s story is not special. Over the years, China has seen many similar “viral” crazes (狂热): Zibo barbecue (淄博烧烤), “Chicken PaiGe” from Jingdezhen, and “Zhou Bing Lun” who looks like Jay Chou. In most cases, the crazy crowds leave after a few months. Some of these suddenly famous people even said, “It’s just okay. The food isn’t that special.”
So, what should we, as students, learn from all this? First, don’t believe everything you see online. Second, don’t follow crowds blindly just because “everyone is doing it.” And third, remember that behind every “viral” story, there is often a common person who just wants a normal life. Next time you see a long line on social media, ask yourself, “Do I really need to go, or am I just following the crowd?”
7. What happened to Uncle Mo after a famous blogger visited his shop?
A. He opened many new restaurants.
B. He started selling his chicken pot online.
C. His simple sentence made the video a huge hit.
8. What can we infer from Uncle Mo’s true feelings about becoming famous?
A. He was excited and happy to become famous.
B. He did not enjoy the sudden fame for it made his life too hard.
C. He planned everything carefully to attract more customers to come.
9. What does the underlined word “viral” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
10. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To compare different viral food crazes in China.
B. To teach readers how to cook chicken pot at home.
C. To warn students not to blindly follow online crazes.

When you think of holidays, what comes to your mind? Fireworks? Gifts? Big meals? What about donuts (甜甜圈)? Believe it or not, there is a holiday called National Donut Day, which falls on the first Friday of June each year in the United States. And behind this delicious snack lies an inspiring true story.
National Donut Day was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army (救世军) to honor the “Donut Ladies”—women volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. In 1917, about 250 of these courageous women traveled to France to set up small huts (小屋) near the front lines. They offered food and a much-needed sense of home to tired soldiers fighting far from their families.
Conditions there were extremely terrible. There were no proper ovens, so the volunteers came up with a creative solution. They fried dough (面团) right inside the soldiers’ metal helmets (头盔) over open fires! One volunteer once served over 300 donuts in a single day. Soon, the simple snack became a huge success, bringing warmth and hope to soldiers’ hearts.
Today, National Donut Day has grown into a nationwide celebration. Americans usually celebrate it in the following ways. The most popular celebration is getting free donuts from shops. Besides, many people give donuts to homeless people—just like the Salvation Army and those women volunteers did long ago.
National Donut Day reminds us that even a small act of kindness can make a big difference. These women didn’t just serve donuts—they served love, care and comfort. So next time you bite into a donut, remember the heroes who used it to brighten the world!

turn off“关闭电器”、get off“下车”适用对象均不是航天器。

“a ray of light...the dark”指“黑暗中的一束光”,表示“在……
