Last week we learned volcano knowledge in Unit 9 class. I found volcanoes really amazing. Not all volcanoes erupt every year, but volcanic soil is rich and good for growing fruit and vegetables. Lava moves slowly, so people have time to run away when volcanoes erupt. For my science project, I decide to make a hand-made volcano model and show it to my classmates next Monday.
第三节 听下面一段短文,根据短文内容完成下面表格,每空一词。短文读两遍。
Here are simple safety tips for different natural disasters, listen carefully:
When an earthquake happens indoors, hide under a strong table and stay away from broken glass.
If you face a heavy flood, move to high ground right away and take enough clean drinking water.
When wildfire smoke comes, cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth to stop thick smoke.
If a tornado warning arrives, stay in the underground basement, do not stand near outside walls.
After any natural disaster, remember to keep your mobile phone charged so you can call rescue workers for help.

Earthquake Safety
Earthquake is a terrible natural force. It happens when underground rocks move and shake the ground.
Here are three safety rules for earthquakes. First, hide under a strong desk to protect your head when shaking starts. Second, stay away from windows and tall walls. Third, never take lifts to go outside.
Learning these skills is very important. It helps us stay calm and protect ourselves when danger comes. We must respect natural forces and get ready for disasters.

How to Survive Different Natural Forces
Natural forces like storms, floods and earthquakes are powerful and unpredictable. Every year, millions of people around the world meet with different natural disasters. Many injuries and even deaths happen not because of the disaster itself, but because people do not know correct self-protection skills. Learning knowledge from Unit 9 and Unit 11 can help us stay safe when danger comes.
Earthquakes are one of the most sudden disasters. When you feel buildings shake, do not run out at once. Falling walls and flying glass may hurt you. The right way is to drop, cover and hold on. Drop down to your knees, cover your head under a heavy desk or table, and hold the furniture tightly until the shaking stops. If you are outside, stay away from tall buildings, power lines and big trees. Never take the lift during an earthquake. After shaking ends, check if there are small fires or gas leaks quickly.
Floods usually come after long-time heavy rain. Low-lying villages and riverside cities face bigger risks. Once you get the flood warning, pack your emergency bag first. The bag should have bottled water, dry biscuits, flashlights and a first-aid kit. Move to higher places such as hills or the top floor of strong buildings. Do not walk or drive through moving flood water. Even water that reaches your knees can knock adults down. Water also hides broken stones and deep holes under its surface.
Tornadoes have strong spinning winds that can blow houses apart. Before a tornado arrives, the sky turns dark green and you can hear a loud noise like a train. If you live in a house with a basement, hide inside it and cover your body with thick quilts. If there is no basement, stay in a small room without windows, like a bathroom. Stay far from cars and trees outdoors.
Volcano eruptions are less common in our country, but we still need to learn related knowledge. Thick ash from volcanoes is bad for our breathing. When ash falls down, wear masks and close all doors and windows tightly. Do not go to low valleys, because hot lava always flows down to lower land.
Many schools now hold disaster practice every term. Teachers teach students the skills we talked above. It is not enough to just read textbooks about natural forces; we need to practice again and again so we can act calmly when real danger comes.
21. Why do many people get hurt in natural disasters?
A. Disasters are too powerful
B. They lack self-protection knowledge
C. They refuse to leave their houses
D. The rescue teams arrive too late
22. What should you do first when an earthquake hits indoors?
A. Run out of the building quickly
B. Take the elevator downstairs
C. Hide under heavy furniture
D. Call your family members
23. Which of the following is dangerous during a flood?
A. Staying on the top floor
B. Packing clean drinking water
C. Driving through running flood water
D. Moving to high hills
24. What color will the sky turn before a tornado comes?
A. Dark green B. Dark black C. Light blue D. Gray white
25. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Different types of natural disasters in the world
B. How to keep safe when facing natural forces
C. The reasons why natural disasters happen
D. School safety training about earthquakes

The Amazing Power of Ocean Energy
When we learn Unit 11, we talked about clean new energy from nature. Wind power and solar power are widely known, but ocean energy is a less famous yet promising resource. The ocean covers over seventy percent of Earth’s surface, and it carries huge energy in its waves, tides and temperature differences. If we make good use of ocean energy, it can solve the world’s energy shortage problem without polluting the air.
Tidal power is the most developed ocean energy so far. Tides rise and fall twice every day because of the gravity from the moon and sun. People build special dams across river mouths connected to the sea. When the tide rises, water fills the pool behind the dam; when the tide falls, water flows back to the sea through tunnels. The fast-flowing water pushes large turbines, and the turbines create electricity. Tidal power stations can work every day, and they do not produce any waste gas. The biggest tidal power station in the world is in France, and China also built several small tidal power stations along its eastern coast.
Wave power uses the up-and-down movement of seawater waves. Machines floating on the sea catch wave energy and turn it into electric power. Unlike solar power that only works in daytime and wind power that depends on windy weather, waves exist all year round. Even on quiet days, small waves can provide stable energy. However, wave power machines face big challenges: seawater is salty and will break metal parts easily, and strong storms may destroy the floating equipment. Scientists are now developing anti-rust materials to fix this problem.
Ocean thermal energy makes use of temperature gaps. The surface seawater is warm under the sun, while deep seawater thousands of meters below stays cold all the time. Special machines collect warm surface water to make liquid evaporate. The vapor pushes generators to produce electricity, then cold deep water cools the vapor back into liquid for repeated use. This kind of energy does not create noise pollution, but building related machines costs a lot of money.
Compared with coal and oil, ocean energy is renewable. Coal and oil take millions of years to form, but waves and tides will never disappear as long as the ocean exists. Burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide that warms the earth, while ocean energy production has almost no carbon emission.
Still, ocean energy cannot take the place of traditional energy right now. Building power stations on the sea costs much more than land power plants, and many technical problems need to be solved. But more and more countries put money into ocean energy research. In the future, natural forces from the ocean will become an important clean energy source for human beings.
26. What makes tides rise and fall every day?
A. Strong sea winds B. Gravity of the moon and sun
C. Temperature changes of seawater D. The movement of underwater rocks
27. What is one advantage of wave power over solar power?
A. It costs less to build machines B. It works day and night all year
C. It does not need any special equipment D. It creates no noise at all
28. What difficulty do wave power machines meet?
A. Lack of sunlight on the sea B. Low speed of sea waves
C. Salt seawater damages metal parts D. Not enough space on the ocean
29. Which word can replace the underlined word “renewable”?
A. Can be reused forever B. Hard to produce C. Easy to transport D. Bad for environment
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Tidal power will replace coal in ten years
B. Ocean energy still needs more technical improvement
C. Thermal energy stations can be built anywhere
D. Wave machines work better on stormy days
C
A Volunteer’s Story of Wildfire Rescue
Last spring, a big wildfire broke out in the mountain forest near my hometown. I joined the city volunteer rescue team and spent three days helping local villagers. This special experience taught me lessons I could never get only from Unit 9 textbooks about natural disasters.
On the first morning, we received the notice at 6 o’clock. The fire spread fast because of strong southwest winds. Dry grass and pine trees burned quickly, and thick gray smoke covered the whole mountain. We drove to the foot of the mountain with boxes of masks, drinking water and bandages. Local firemen told us that over thirty families living at the mountain foot had to move to the town’s sports center for safety. Our team’s main job was to move old people and little kids, send out supplies and clean the fire escape roads.
An eighty-year-old grandma refused to leave her small wooden house. She lived there for sixty years and all her old photos and farm tools were inside. The smoke got thicker minute by minute, and small burning branches fell down near her yard. I sat beside her and talked gently. I told her the fire would reach her house soon, and we could keep all her old things in the town’s storage room safely. At last, she agreed to get on our rescue bus. On the bus, she held my hand tightly and said she was thankful we did not force her away.
The second day’s work was harder. The wind grew stronger, and the fire spread to another hillside. We carried heavy bags of bottled water up the mountain for fire fighters. My shoulders hurt badly after hours of walking on rough mountain roads. Some volunteers had small burns on their arms when moving burning branches away from houses. We took turns to rest for twenty minutes each time, and no one left the team early.
On the third afternoon, heavy rain fell suddenly. The rain put out most of the fire after four hours. We went back to the mountain to check hidden small fires under fallen tree trunks. Many houses at the foot were saved, but parts of the forest turned black. Villagers cried when they saw their burnt fruit trees, but they were glad all family members stayed safe.
After the wildfire, our school held a sharing class. I talked about my volunteer experience to my classmates. I told them learning disaster safety rules from books is important, but real rescue work lets us feel the power of natural disasters directly. Small acts of kindness can help people get through hard times. We also planted young saplings on the burnt mountain one month later to repair the broken forest.
31. What was the writer’s job as a volunteer?
A. Put out the wildfire directly B. Move villagers and send supplies
C. Repair burnt houses in the mountain D. Plant trees to stop the fire spreading
32. Why did the old grandma refuse to leave at first?
A. She did not trust the volunteer team
B. She worried about her belongings in the house
C. She wanted to put out the fire by herself
D. She thought the fire would stop soon
33. What helped put out the wildfire finally?
A. Firemen’s water guns B. Volunteers clearing trees
C. Heavy rain D. Natural wind change
34. Which word can best describe the volunteer team?
A. Lazy and careless B. Brave and warm-hearted
C. Quiet and shy D. Funny and outgoing
35. What lesson did the writer learn from this experience?
A. Wildfires only happen in dry summer
B. Textbook knowledge is useless for disasters
C. Kind small actions can support people in trouble
D. Forests can grow back quickly after wildfires

Climate Change Changes Local Weather Patterns
In Unit 10, we studied weather observation and climate rules. Most students think climate change is a faraway problem that only influences polar ice and ocean animals. However, records from our city’s weather station show that climate change is already changing our daily weather and local natural forces clearly.
Thirty years ago, our city usually had steady four seasons. Spring was warm with light rain, summer had moderate thunderstorms, autumn was cool and dry, and winter had light snow every year. Now, the weather becomes much less regular. Spring temperatures rise faster, and we face long dry periods before May. Last year, no rain fell for forty days in spring, which made many farmlands crack. Farmers had to carry river water to water crops day after day.
Summer thunderstorms become stronger and more sudden. In the past, heavy rain warnings were sent out hours before storms arrived. Now, strong storms can form within thirty minutes. Last summer, a sudden heavy rain caused a small flood in the old town area. The underground drainage system could not take so much rainwater quickly, and many ground floors of shops were filled with water. Local weather workers explained that warmer air holds more water vapor, so rain falls in larger amounts in shorter time.
Winter is getting warmer year by year. Thirty years ago, the temperature often dropped below minus five degrees Celsius for two or three weeks every winter. Now, cold days below zero are fewer and shorter. Light snow used to come in late December, but in the past three years, snow only appeared once in early February and melted in one day. Less snow means less water storage for spring farm use. The river that feeds farmlands has lower water levels every spring now.
Strong winds also appear more often in all seasons. Thirty years ago, strong wind warnings came three to four times a year. Now we get eight to ten wind warnings every year. Strong winds break fruit tree branches, blow down street trees and even damage small farm greenhouses.
Weather station workers advise local people to form good habits to cut down energy waste, such as saving electricity, taking public transport and planting more trees. Small daily changes can slow down climate change. Schools should teach teenagers more climate knowledge from Unit 9 to Unit 11, so young people understand the connection between human activities and natural forces. Only when everyone takes action can we protect our local weather environment for the future.
36. What do most students think about climate change at first?
A. It only affects faraway places B. It changes local summer rain a lot
C. It brings more snow every winter D. It makes spring rain heavier
37. What problem did last spring’s long dry weather bring?
A. Street trees were blown down B. Farmland cracked and lacked water
C. Underground shops flooded D. Greenhouses broke in wind
38. Why are summer thunderstorms more sudden and heavy now?
A. There are more rivers in the city B. Warmer air holds more water vapor
C. The drainage system is too old D. Farmers use too much underground water
39. Which statement about local winter weather is correct?
A. Snow comes earlier than thirty years ago B. Cold days below zero last longer
C. Winter temperatures are higher than before D. Every winter has heavy snow for weeks
40. What suggestion do weather workers give people?
A. Move farmlands near big rivers B. Reduce daily energy waste
C. Build bigger drainage systems D. Stop planting fruit trees outdoors

Last month, our geography teacher asked us to finish a report about natural forces from Unit 9 to Unit 11. I planned to interview a rescue volunteer at the community center last Sunday, but I almost made a big mistake.
The night before, I was busy playing games and didn’t 41 the weather notice on my phone. Early Sunday morning, the sky turned dark grey, yet I still decided to set off by bike alone.
When I rode halfway to the center, a strong wind blew up suddenly. The wind was so strong that I had to ride 42 to keep balance. Soon, big raindrops hit the ground, and it began to rain 43. I had no umbrella or raincoat with me at all.
I quickly stopped my bike and ran into a small roadside shop to stay 44. The shop owner was an old man who once joined flood rescue teams. He told me several useful 45 about dealing with sudden storms.
He said we should prepare an emergency bag at home filled 46 candles, water and first-aid medicine. His words gave me a deep 47. I finally realized how 48 it is to watch weather reports every day.
Many people ignore warnings 49 going out, and they will get into trouble easily. Real dangerous experiences make safety knowledge much 50 to keep in mind.
While we talked, I saw a shared bike 51 over in the running rainwater outside. No passer-by could 52 it up because the water was too fast. I made up my mind to 53 all the disaster safety rules carefully after I went home.
The old man told me humans can’t 54 natural forces, so we must learn to get ready ahead of time. He advised me to 55 every weather warning from now on.
Three hours later, the rain stopped. I thanked the old man and finished my interview smoothly. This special day taught me to respect nature and never take weather lightly.

The world is looking for clean 56 energy to take the place of coal and oil. Ocean power is one of the most promising new resources. Waves and tides carry huge 57 that we can turn into electricity.
Scientists keep 58 new machines to catch wave energy. These machines float on the sea and move up and down with waves. 59 can produce electricity day and night, unlike solar panels that only work in sunny daytime.
However, using ocean energy meets quite 60 challenges. Salt seawater breaks machine parts easily. Strong storms may hit the floating equipment 61 and cause damage. Engineers are trying to make anti-rust materials to solve this problem.
Tidal power stations build dams across sea river mouths. When tides rise and fall, moving 62 pushes turbines to create power. This kind of station is 63. and creates no harmful gas.
More countries plan to build ocean energy stations along coasts. If we use more 64. clean energy from the ocean, we can cut down carbon emission and 65 our earth from global warming.
