B Becoming a nurse was practically a natural choice for little Eugenia Millender, who began her years of health service by helping her grandmother, who didn’t like needles, with her injections (注射). Born in Panama, Millender grew up in a racially (种族地) diverse family and community. Her mother was Afro-Latina Panamanian, and her father was indigenous (本地的) Guna Panamanian. When Millender was 12, she arrived in Brooklyn with her mother, hoping to bring her a better life. They experienced poverty, and Millender saw the access and quality of health care people received. “My mother didn’t speak English, and when she tried to get care, people ignored her,” she says. Then she moved to Florida as a teenager and joined the army after high school, which allowed her to earn her undergraduate and master’s degrees in nursing. Working in emergency departments, which often cared for the uninsured, she saw families struggling with the same challenges her mother had. “You know they don’t have the resources to take care of their loved ones once they leave the hospital, or they don’t understand what the doctors and nurses are telling them because they speak a different language or an indigenous language,” she says. Now as a professor at Florida State University College of Nursing, Millender co-founded an institute (机构) and serves as its co-director. The institute focuses on addressing the causes of health unfairness — from language and cultural barriers (障碍) to mental-health challenges. Drawing on her own experiences, she spends time learning from communities about their needs and the difficulties they face. That includes incorporating, rather than ignoring, cultural beliefs, and community-based programmes that connect people with health care, often for the first time. Recently, Millender has seen her work come full circle with programmes she has started in her native Panama to improve health care for indigenous people. “I feel very lucky, so I have to give back,” she says. 24. What inspired Millender to become a nurse? A. Her childhood experiences. B. Her parents’ expectations. C. Her love for science and medicine. D. Her desire to get out of poverty. 25. What challenge did Millender’s mother face in accessing health care? A. The language barrier. B. The unstable job. C. The lack of personal insurance. D. The lack of family companionship. 26. Which word best describes Millender? A. Honest. B. Determined. C. Strict. D. Quiet. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. The Hard Life of Newcomers in America B. Ways to Overcome Language Barriers in Hospitals C. A Successful Professor in American Medical Colleges D. A Nurse Working to Breaking Health Unfairness C Most people enjoy variety. We like to eat different foods from meal to meal. We wear different clothes. We become bored when there is little variety. However, there’s one place where we tend to dislike variety, and that’s in each other. We often feel uncomfortable with people who practise different habits, or hold beliefs or values that we do not share. There are reasons for this. When we meet new and different things, our brain works a bit harder than usual. When we’re learning, our nerve cells require more resources, such as water, salt, and various other chemicals. This extra metabolic (新陈代谢的) activity can feel unsettling and unpleasant. And it can feel worse if our nervous system is already under pressure. This sort of variation may be uncomfortable for individuals, but it’s important to the survival of any species. If all finches (雀科鸣鸟) were the same, for example, and their environment changed in some significant, harmful ways, like an increase in the temperature or a decrease in water, all of them would be equally affected and the species might become extinct. This insight (洞察力) into variation comes from Charles Darwin, and it’s known as population thinking. The idea of “survival of the fittest” shows that individuals must vary. Some are more suited than others for a given environment, making it easier for them to survive, grow, and reproduce. Variation is therefore a requisite for natural selection to work. Dealing with the vast variety of humankind can be demanding, but it’s a good investment (投资), sort of like exercise for your brain. When you meet someone who are different from you, treat your discomfort as a signal to be curious and learn instead of a signal of a problem. Don’t hold that the other person should be silenced. Finally, this mindset can make you more flexible in adapting to challenging situations. 28. Which of the following might make people feel uncomfortable? A. Socializing with people from different cultures. B. Sharing travelling experiences with others. C. Taking a trip to a foreign country. D. Having an adventure in the wild. 29. Why can new and different things make people feel unsettling and unpleasant? A. They require more physical efforts. B. They need more resources for nerve cells. C. They are often harmful to people’s health. D. They put pressure on people’s nervous system. 30. Which of the following word can replace the underlined word “requisite” in Paragraph 3? A. Replacement. B. Challenge. C. Requirement. D. Drive. 31. What does the author want to show in the last paragraph? A. Why we should get along with people different from us. B. How we should treat the differences we find in others. C. How we can benefit from seeking variation. D. Why we tend to chase and enjoy variation. D Using AI to help write a message to a friend is not a good idea — at least if your friend finds out about the use of AI, a new study suggests. Researchers found that people in the study believed that a friend who used AI to write them a message didn’t put in as much effort as a friend who wrote a message themselves. That may be understandable, but the effect goes beyond the message itself, said Bingjie Liu, lead author of the study. “After they get an AI message, our participants (参与者) feel less satisfied with their relationship with their friend and feel more uncertain about where they stand,” Liu said. But to be fair to AI, it wasn’t just the use of technology that turned people off. “People want their partners or friends to make an effort to come up with their own message without help from AI or other people,” Liu said. “People want to know how much you want to invest in your friendship and if they feel you are cutting corners by using AI to help, that’s not good,” Liu explained. Of course, most people won’t tell a friend that they used AI to help write a message, Liu said. But she noted that as ChatGPT becomes more popular, people may start doing a Turing Test in their minds as they read messages from friends and others. Turing Test is sometimes used to refer to people wondering if they can tell whether an action was taken by a computer or a person. “It could be that people will secretly do this Turing Test in their minds, trying to figure out if messages have some AI component (成分),” Liu said. “It may hurt relationships.” The answer is to do your own work in relationships, she said. “Don’t use technology just because it is convenient. Sincerity still matters a lot in relationships.” 32. How did people in the study feel about receiving an AI message from their friend? A. Thankful. B. Surprised. C. Dissatisfied. D. Embarrassed. 33. Why do people prefer that friends write messages themselves instead of using AI? A. AI messages often have many mistakes. B. People believe AI lacks emotional depth. C. Friends who use AI are considered dishonest. D. People want to see the effort invested in the friendship. 34. What’s the purpose of starting a Turing Test according to Liu? A. To judge the level of ChatGPT. B. To see if AI has been used in a message. C. To test the sincerity of an online friend. D. To learn how to communicate with AI. 35. What is Liu’s suggestion? A. Believing in the development of technology. B. Paying attention to real-world friends. C. Being actively honest in relationships. D. Thinking twice before making a convenient choice. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We can all relate to being criticized (批评) and then feeling terrible. There is not a single one of us who feels happy from being criticized. 36 Next time you are communicating with someone who is criticizing you, here are some ways to try. Stay calm. I know that your heart may be beating rapidly and your palms (手心) may become sweaty but you must breathe deeply and appear calm. 37 You will get to the next several steps only if you can achieve it. Keep breathing deeply. Listen. Before you start responding, let the person finish saying what they need to say. 38 Remain quiet until you finish listening. It is only when you have heard the person out that you can think about what they have said. Take a moment to prepare your response. Buy yourself some time. Tell the person who has just criticized you that you need time to think about what they have said. If the person offering the criticism to you is important to you and you are not sure how to respond, then give yourself some time. Tell them that you will get back to them because you need 24 hours to think about this. 39 Don’t we? 40 Think about whether there are any positive messages in the communication. Perhaps the person who is telling the thoughts cares so deeply about you that they truly want you to be the best kind of yourself. Keep in mind that there may be something good going on here and try to find what that may be and see what you can learn. A. Think positively. B. Find out the purpose. C. If you don’t, you will just make things worse. D. Staying calm is always better than getting upset. E. This gives you something to work with and think about. F. When he was waiting for his return flight at the airport, he noticed an old lady sitting next to him. She looked around 70 and kept staring at her passport — it’s cover was worn, as if she’d held it a thousand times. He later learned she was Norma, heading back to Cuba. Norma communicated with him through simple gestures and a few Spanish words he could understand: she’d come to the US to visit her sick child in New Jersey. Now that her child was getting better, she was going home alone. Her flight had a layover (中转) in Miami, where we live, but she had no one to turn to there. My husband helped her carry her heavy suitcase — which seemed too big for her thin arms — and guided her through the crowded airport. Just as they reached the boarding gate, they heard that their flight was delayed. Norma froze. Then tears started rolling down her cheeks. She pulled a crumpled (揉皱的) piece of paper from her pocket — it was a note with her child’s phone number in New Jersey, but no one answered when she tried to call. “I’ll just stay in the airport,” she whispered in Spanish, wiping her eyes with the edge of her clothes. My husband saw her hands shake — maybe from cold, maybe from fear. He immediately called me. “Honey, this lady can’t speak English. She has no friends or family in Miami. Can she stay with us tonight since she will catch an early flight tomorrow morning?” He told me her story, and I could picture her sitting alone in that huge airport. I quickly moved my daughter to my room, changed the bed sheets to fresh ones, and started cooking — rice, beans, and a warm soup, just like my mum used to make. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Upon their arrival, Norma stood at the door, looking at the warm light in the living room. The next morning at 4 a. m., we made her favourite food. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
